Last month I shared with you a plea for the Junior Sponsorship Fund. We have already seen the generosity of membership, so thank you! This month, I am going to talk about the Competition Fund. Same idea as the junior sponsorship fund, just older participants. At California Yacht Club, we have an amazing group of sailors, including America’s Cup veterans, Olympians, World Champions, North American Champions, and National Champions.

Many of these members grew up in our junior program, and we could not be more proud of them. The Comp Fund provides a resource, for Champions and future Champions alike, to soften the financial blow of competing at the highest levels of our sport by providing financial assistance for coaching, entry fees, and charters.

A few months ago the club hosted a presentation from brothers Grant and Jordan Janov. The brothers grew up in the junior program, along with their older brother Ryan. Grant and Jordan are in pursuit of an Olympic berth for 2028 and they fly our burgee with pride. A huge amount of time is dedicated to their practicing - especially with other international teams. Recently, our Comp Fund covered the cost of coaching at the 49er world championships in France for the brothers. Not the travel, or the boat, or the sails, or the room and board - all of which is substantially more than we cover - but our contribution was meaningful.

We also have been a long time supporter of Allie Blecher. Allie is another product of our junior program and a rockstar in the world of sailing, particularly the art of match racing. Most recently she (and her Team BAAM) won a stage of the Women’s World Match Racing Tour - the Santa Maria Cup. It is a huge accomplishment,which makes the fact that she has now won it twice in a row even more impressive. We have and will continue to support Allie, she represents the very best of our racing tradition. Allie also finds time to give back to the sport,including hosting rules seminars at the Club, open to the public.

The Comp Fund management board meets regularly to evaluate funding requests. As we are sending teams to prestigious, invitation-only events, such as New York Yacht Club’s Resolute Cup, Newport Harbor Yacht Club’s Baldwin Cup, San Diego Yacht Club’s Women' s Winter Invitational, and others. We also support teams attending high level events such as World, Continental, and National Championships. Because we are blessed with many enthusiastic and skilled racing members, the need for assistance is great.

The professional area of our sport is very small, most world class sailors rely on support from outside sources such as yacht clubs to compete. To be clear, the Comp Fund does not begin to cover the costs for the programs we support, but simply shows our fellow members that we support their efforts. FROM THE MANAGEMENT

Dear Members,

In just a few short weeks, the kids will be back in school and most of the summer will be behind us. As you can see throughout the Breeze, we’ve filled the summer with activities and opportunities to gather as a membership From the standpoint of member events, the CYC team will support and collaborate with the Fleet to offer nearly 300 different events in 2026 From birthdays to the Commodore’s Cruise, each week seems to get busier Thank you to everyone who helps plan these events and make them so successful

I normally try to address some of the more businessfocused items in this publication, since the membership does such a good job of highlighting the fun. With that in mind, I’m pleased to share that the Club is healthy and growing. Charlie and Clarence, our Membership Team, have worked hard to produce that growth, and it has finally shifted into the right areas: family and full memberships. I believe the value of a CYC membership continues to improve. P130, new on-the-water assets, and the upcoming fitness center opening in August all contribute to an increasingly attractive value proposition for the Club. After everything the Club has been through, it is nice to see our family growing, so to speak. Finally, Chase reports that the Marina is more than 90% full, which is the highest occupancy it has seen in many years. For the most part, the remaining available slips are now limited to smaller sizes.

August is normally a quieter time at the Club, but we will unveil the new dockside fitness space later in the month. We expect this to become a highly used amenity and one that members have needed for quite some time. My hope is that many of you will be able to cancel your local gym memberships and begin saving right away. I also hope the increased activity will create opportunities to put the food truck into service, possibly offer coffee, and establish a fun outdoor fitness atmosphere for everyone to enjoy. SUMMER RACING BEGINS AT CAL RACE WEEK

On May 30–31, Cal Race Week was a perfect kickoff to the summer sailing season. 68 competitors registered, representing an increase in competitors over the past few years. The strong turnout was driven by the Melges 15 fleet, with 16 entries, followed closely by PHRF B, J/70, and Martin 242 classes all with 11 entries each

Marina del Rey delivered its signature conditions, allowing for races to commence without delay On Saturday, racers had 8-9 knots of steady breeze With a strong, but not overpowering breeze, racing came down to tactics and teamwork

A few competitors showed commanding leads after the first day Ryan Cox in his J/70 from Ventura YC and Gabriel Ferramola in his Viper 640 from Alamitos Bay YC won all their races, and Robbie King and Karla Reinheardt in the Melges 15 from Alamitos Bay YC posted three wins and a second to wrap up the first day of racing In the 1D35 fleet, Destroyer (Newport Harbor YC), Blitzen (Newport Harbor YC), Mexican Divorce (Del Rey YC), and Relentless (Long Beach YC) were jockeying around the course, finishing within a minute of each other on the day’s races. Post-race, sailors enjoyed a dock party on the long dock, with beer and rum sponsored by NAOS Yachts and Mount Gay, respectively to wrap up the day.

Sunday conditions were lighter, with an average of 6 knots, but despite the lighter breeze, competitors did not take it easy. Gabriel Ferramola continued to dominate the Viper 640 fleet. David Botner’s Rival, from Ventura YC, found an extra gear to win both races on Sunday after tight racing on Saturday. Morgan Paxhia in the Melges 15 from Mission Bay YC, who was close on Robbie and Karla’s heels after Saturday, turned the tables and won all of Sunday’s races, tightening the leaderboard in the Melges 15s. The Martin 242s, preparing for their North Americans here at CYC later in the summer, previewed how competitive the fleet is. Eight of 11 boats posted scores in the top 5 in individual races over the course of the weekend. Similarly, five out of the eight competitors in PHRF A earned a third place or better in individual races over the course of the weekend

Overall, racers enjoyed classic, albeit challenging, Marina del Rey summer sailing Manageable wind with tight competition meant each racer was fighting to the end to secure their place.

This event could not have been put on without a small army of volunteers and support from CYC. COMPETITIVE RACING AT THE C420 CALIFORNIA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

If you were around the Club on the weekend of June 13–14, you probably saw that our dry storage area and dinghy docks were full of juniors and boats as CYC hosted 104 eager C420 sailors for the California State Championships Teams represented yacht clubs from San Francisco to San Diego, and competitors ranged in age from 13 to 18

CYC’s C420 program is led by coach Gabriel Sequeira Gabriel joined the CYC staff in 2022 specifically to build the C420 fleet Gabriel tells me that the C420 is an excellent boat for building a double-handed sailing program because it provides sailors with a strong pathway for development through a large national fleet and an extensive regatta schedule

The boat teaches essential skills such as boat handling, sail trim, spinnaker work, tactics, and communication between skipper and crew With its mainsail, jib, and spinnaker setup, the C420 closely resembles the teamwork and coordination required on larger keelboats, making it an ideal platform for preparing sailors for high school, collegiate, and lifelong sailing opportunities.

At the time Gabriel was hired, the Club had five old and tired boats and no active C420 racing teams. In the span of four years, through Gabriel’s leadership and the support of CYC ownership, we now have eight newer boats, and six teams competed in the Championships under the CYC burgee.

John Fracisco, chair of CYC’s Junior Program, was the principal race officer (PRO) for the event. Seven races were scheduled, four on Saturday and three on Sunday. John was able to get all four races in on Saturday, and sailing conditions were ideal. Competition was tight and the 52 entries finished fast and furious, usually within 10 minutes of the leader, keeping the race committee on their toes

Going into Sunday’s racing, several boats were poised for podium finishes, and with a strong sea breeze teams were very aggressive at the start After multiple general recalls, PRO John had to resort to the dreaded black flag to get a sixth race started before the 3 p m deadline

Trophies were presented by both Commodore Hamilton and John’s son, Jr Commodore Connor Fracisco, himself a C420 sailor The CYC teams of Katlia Sherman and Sophia Corzine and Cooper Keeves and Julia Getter both had podium finishes, in third and fourth places, respectively Katlia has been a very active and successful racer in the C420 fleet This was her last regatta for CYC – she was one of the first C420 sailors coached by Gabriel in 2022 and has now graduated high school and will be sailing for Brown University in the fall Cooper is also no stranger to the podium, having won the C420 Nationals with Matthew Commons in 2024 He graduated this year too and will be sailing for Dartmouth University in the fall Cooper has one more big regatta sailing for CYC before going to Dartmouth He and Julia are competing in the C420 National Championships at Long Beach YC July 8–10

Many thanks to more than 30 volunteers who stepped up to help with this regatta. CYC members were checking in racers, on the water with the race committee, in the yard helping to launch boats, on computers scoring finishes, and in small boats as official judges. I can confidently speak for all the volunteers in stating that we had a great time watching these skilled and determined sailors as they made their way across the racecourse. Volunteering for race committee is a terrific way to meet other members and enjoy a fun day on the water or onshore; consider getting involved in one of our upcoming Junior Regattas: the Sanguinetti Team race on August 22–23 and / or the Shadden Series #2 on October 4. LORENTZEN AND GROENHUYZEN SHINE AT IDA LEWIS REGATTA IN SF BAY

Congratulations to Cassady Lorentzen and Sophia Groenhuyzen on their third-place finish at the US Junior Womens Doublehanded Championship for the Ida Lewis Trophy This regatta is not just another regional sailing event it is one of US Sailing's premier championships for junior women sailors. What makes the event especially prestigious is its combination of elite coaching and championship racing. Competitors participate in multi-day training clinics led by top US Sailing coaches before racing against many of the best young female sailors from across the country. Earning a podium finish at this event is a significant accomplishment.

DEFENDING THE SANTA MARIA CUP

Winning the Santa Maria Cup for the first time was an incredible accomplishment Winning it again feels different

Last year, we came to Annapolis hoping to prove that we belonged among some of the best women's match racing teams in the world. We had nothing to defend and everything to gain. This year, we arrived as the defending champions. That changes your mindset from the moment you step on the dock.

There is an expectation that comes with wearing the number one seed. Every team wants to race you at your best, and every mistake is magnified. We knew the competition would be stronger than ever, and with so many accomplished sailors returning to the Santa Maria Cup, there were no easy races

One of the biggest lessons I have learned in match racing is that success is built long before the starting signal. It comes from preparation, trust in your teammates, and staying committed to the process even when the results are uncertain. That became our focus throughout the week Instead of thinking about defending a title, we concentrated on sailing one race at a time

That sounds simple, but it is not always easy

Match racing has a way of testing every part of your game One race can come down to a great start; the next might be decided by a wind shift, a penalty, or a single tactical decision on the final leg. There is very little room for error, which is exactly what makes this style of racing so rewarding. Every race is a new puzzle to solve.

What made this week especially meaningful was the team. This year's team was Beka Schiff, Katja Sertl, Ali Blumenthal, and me Team BAAM. We’ve spent countless hours sailing together, learning from one another, and building trust. We know each other's strengths, communication styles, and move on quickly when something does not go according to plan. That confidence in each other is what carried us through some of the toughest moments of the regatta

The level of competition at the Santa Maria Cup continues to impress me every year. Racing against world-class sailors from around the globe pushes all of us to become better competitors. There is a tremendous amount of respect among the teams because everyone understands the work it takes to compete at this level. You leave the event with new friendships, new lessons, and an even greater appreciation for the sport.

Standing on the dock after the final race, trophy in hand once again, I found myself thinking less about the result and more about the journey. Championships are never won by one person. They are the product of a crew that believes in each other, coaches who invest their time and knowledge, organizers and volunteers who make the event possible, and family and friends who support us every step of the way

Bringing the Santa Maria Cup home for a second consecutive year is something I will always be proud of Not because it means we were perfect, but because it represents the resilience, teamwork, and commitment that define our team

As soon as the celebration ends, the process begins again That is one of the things I love most about sailing Every regatta is a fresh opportunity to learn, improve, and earn the next result None of this happens alone

A championship is the result of countless people investing their time, energy, and belief long before the first race begins

Thank you to California Yacht Club for its continued support of our team and for making opportunities like this possible. Winning the Santa Maria Cup for a second consecutive year is something Team BAAM accomplished together, and I could not ask for a better team.

ROUGH CONDITIONS NO MATCH FOR JUNIOR SAILORS

Our California Yacht Club Optimist Champ Fleet team, led by Coach Gabriella Kidd, took on the challenging conditions of the Heavy Weather Regatta hosted by St Francis Yacht Club on June 20–21, and delivered an outstanding performance against a highly competitive fleet of 66 sailors.

Kicking off the weekend was a Slalom regatta on June 19 in which Hayden Zieger made the final heat. Madeleine and Morgan Clarke sailed in the qualifying heats.

Over the weekend, true to its name, the regatta tested sailors with classic San Francisco Bay conditions: strong winds, challenging chop, and powerful currents. Despite the demanding environment, our team rose to the occasion, demonstrating skill, determination, and resilience throughout the weekend.

The team's impressive overall results by Fleet are: Red Fleet: 2 - Hayden Zieger, 3 - Lap Yan Nathaniel Cheung, 5 - William Hamilton, 8 - Madeleine Clarke and Blue Fleet: 4 - Morgan Clarke, 8 - Oliver Busselll, 15 - Alexander Schendel, 21- Hei Yat Adriel Cheung, 22 - Elsa Liu

The team showcased both its depth and strength in one of the West Coast's most demanding regattas Beyond the results, the experience of racing in heavy-air San Francisco Bay conditions provided invaluable preparation for future competition

Congratulations to all of our sailors for their hard work, perseverance, and excellent sportsmanship We are incredibly proud of how they represented the team and embraced the challenge

The momentum continues as we now set our sights on the 2026 Optimist US National Championships in New Jersey. We can't wait to see what this talented group of junior sailors accomplish next!

Saturday morning began with an armada of dinghies assembled for the much-anticipated harbor crawl The unofficial uniform—white shirts and cruise crew attire—made the fleet easy to spot as it cruised through the harbor The day’s route included several favorite waterfront destinations: Tavern House, Sol Cocina, Rusty Pelican, and Billy’s at the Beach By late afternoon, stories from the dinghy crawl were already becoming legendary and everyone was ready for a short rest before the evening.

After a short break and a change from cruise crew uniforms into evening attire, cruisers gathered for the weekend’s signature dinner at The Cannery. The elegant waterfront setting offered a perfect contrast to the day’s casual adventures. Many agreed that the day’s dinghy crawl followed by an elegant dinner captured exactly what “The Love Boat” cruise was all about. Sunday brought a relaxed continental breakfast and one final opportunity for everyone to gather before heading home. While boats prepared to depart their slips, nobody seemed quite ready for the weekend to end.

The last weekend in June, California Yacht Club came alive for an unforgettable Staycation Weekend, bringing members and guests together for three days of boating, wellness, music, and community on the waterfront

Festivities began Friday evening with a lively boat christening ceremony, welcoming a crowd of nearly 70 attendees to celebrate new adventures on the water. Ed and Melinda McPherson christened their boat, Daydream Believer. On Saturday, Dougley and SEO Sharon Stewart christened their new powerboat, Slan Gava.

Throughout the weekend, members enjoyed a variety of curated experiences, including a delicious taco bar, a classic burger bar, refreshing treats extravagant charcuterie boards, and a fleet of hosted boats serving margaritas, pina coladas, and Bloody Marys along the med-tied main dock.

Saturday featured a group brunch at PLANTA, where guests enjoyed great food, meaningful conversations, and the vibrant marina atmosphere Massages were available throughout the weekend, offering moments of relaxation and restoration while friends connected dockside and aboard the yachts

The weekend concluded on a peaceful and inspiring note with Yin Yoga and a Sound Bath led by CYC members Christina Joy and Aloni Ford on the Point Sunday morning Surrounded by waterfront views and the calming sounds of the marina, participants embraced a restorative yoga session that perfectly reflected the spirit of the weekend

From exceptional food and live entertainment to boating, wellness, and lasting friendships, the weekend was a wonderful celebration of community and life on the water. Everyone left refreshed, inspired, and already looking forward to the next opportunity to gather at CYC.

On Saturday, July 4, we had a Paddle and Pickle Celebration. The courts were packed from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. and everyone brought snacks and drinks to enjoy. Red, White and Blue Glitter was worn by all whether they liked it or not, even the dogs were decorated! The many friendships that have been made on the courts is so heartwarming We look forward to more combined events on the courts over the next few months

We are now planning a TYPTI Introductory Class TYPTI is the newest racquet sport that is growing at record speed It is played on a pickle/paddle court and uses a smaller tennis racquet and 3 5 inch foam ball Because it relies on a foam ball, the sport is virtually silent For more information go to www TYPTI com, and watch your email for class details

California Yacht Club officially welcomed Summer 2026 with an action-packed Field Day that brought members of all ages together for an afternoon of laughter, friendly competition, and unforgettable memories

Families enjoyed a variety of classic field day games, exciting relay races, water activities, and team challenges that kept everyone moving and smiling Children raced from event to event, cheering on friends while parents joined in the fun or relaxed alongside the festivities The pool and lawn were filled with energy, making it the perfect way to celebrate the start of the summer season

A huge thank you goes to our incredible Family Activities Committee volunteers and CYC staff, whose hard work and enthusiasm made the event such a success. Their dedication created a welcoming atmosphere where members could connect, celebrate, and enjoy time together. With sunshine, sportsmanship, and plenty of summer spirit, Field Day was the perfect kickoff to another exciting season at California Yacht Club. We can't wait to see everyone at our upcoming summer events!

EPICUREANS CELEBRATE IRISH CUISINE

On June 9, the CYC Epicurean Society celebrated the beginning of a two-year cycle of international cuisines featuring food and wines The diners were transported from P130 in Marina del Rey to a banquet in an Irish Castle overlooking the Irish Sea SEO Connie Webster and Peter Webster hosted a lavash feast of Irish faire with wines from western Europe Beginning with passed Irish-inspired appetizers and Prosecco from northern Italy, the meal progressed to a tasty pea and mint soup and an apple arugula and toasted hazelnut salad with a dry Riesling wine from the Mosel Valley in Germany. Main courses included a seared halibut with lemon butter sauce served on a bed of colcannon (rich whipped potatoes), and roasted carrots and parsnips. The next entree was an herb-crusted lamb chop with barley and a black garlic puree served with a red wine blended with Grenache and Syrah grapes from southern France. The meal concluded over a Guinness chocolate cake with Bailey Irish Cream and Jameson whiskey combined over ice.

This remarkable dinner was made all the more special by our celebration of Chef Frank Caccamise’s final day with us after over three years of service to CYC. Epicurean Co-chair, Peter Webster, presented Frank with a framed burgee and plaque honoring Chef Frank for his achievements with the Epicurean Society and the Club. The Society also welcomed Charles Voudouris as our new executive chef. We look forward to working with him as the Society explores the virtues of luxurious food and wine events.

The Summer Kick-Off Dock Party, hosted by CYCAA and Power Fleet, on June 13, was a tremendous success with roughly 60 CYC members enjoying a late afternoon of great company, music, and Enrique's excellent drinks. A special thanks to Dalia, who prepared a wonderful assortment of appetizers, including fresh guacamole with tortilla chips, hummus with vegetables and naan, and crispy coconut shrimp. Members also brought a delicious variety of homemade desserts to share, making the evening even more special. Everyone had a great time catching up with friends and celebrating the start of summer!

May and June were packed with some of the Club's biggest and most memorable events of the year. Mother's Day was a tremendous success, and our Open House & Boat Show welcomed one of the largest crowds of the season, highlighted by Rosé All Day and the New Member Mixer, which brought members and guests together for an unforgettable waterfront weekend.

Our Open House & Boat Show was the largest and most successful yet. CYC was buzzing with energy as attendees explored the boats, enjoyed the festivities, and experienced everything the Club has to offer.

Members celebrated Independence Day all across the Club, from the lively Dinghy Raft Up and poolside festivities to an unforgettable evening aboard the Northwind for Red, White & Blue on the Water. With delicious food, live music, spectacular marina fireworks, and great company, it was a memorable day celebrating America's birthday at California Yacht Club.

EO Sarah and Adam Faura once again hosted a highly successful Fourth of July Dinghy Cruise, an event that has quickly become a favorite among CYC members

Dozens of dinghies, tenders, paddleboards, and creatively decorated inflatables gathered together in the harbor, creating a lively floating celebration filled with patriotic attire, music, refreshments, and plenty of laughter

With members hopping between boats, reconnecting with friends, and enjoying the holiday on the water, it was easily one of the most festive and memorable ways to celebrate Independence Day August 2026

Cooper Nichols is a 22-year-old mechanical engineer originally from Fidalgo Island, Washington Having grown up boating throughout the San Juan Islands, he hopes to reconnect with his maritime roots through CYC. Jamie and Nicole Gull met while racing aboard Jambo in the Wednesday night series more than 10 years ago After marrying and welcoming their son, Emerson, they spent six months cruising Mexico when he was two. Jamie is a former SpaceX engineer who now leads Wave Function Ventures, while Nicole is a scientist at Ionis developing treatments for rare diseases. They joined to reconnect with the sailing community and raise Emerson around life on the water

Doug Stewart is a recently retired attorney whose passion for sailing began during the pandemic After completing ASA courses 101 through 106 at Bluewater Sailing School, he purchased his boat, Marbella, and embraced the camaraderie of the boating community Believing sailing is best enjoyed with others, Doug looks forward to sharing time on the water with fellow CYC members. He also enjoys traveling and recently celebrated his daughter Brooke’s wedding in Tuscany
