This month I am writing to you regarding a topic near and dear to me—the CYC Junior Program and the CYC Junior Sponsorship Fund. The Junior Program is the heart and soul of any great yacht club, and here at CYC we are no exception. I grew up sailing in our program, and my daughter Josie has followed suit. A junior in college, this summer she will once again be an instructor. It’s so fun to see her out there with the sailors, one of my great joys.

I am proud to say, our Junior summer camp lineup is more robust than most. Our littlest navigators participate in the Seahorse camp, our introduction to the water and boating. For our sailing program, we have learn-to-sail and race teams. Our rapidly growing rowing program has several options, spanning a Youth Learn-to-Row, Intermediate Youth Rowing Camps, and High Performance Camps for high school through post-college.

CYC rowing has just competed in the So Cal Cup. Our team medaled in 16 of the 19 events they entered. Our teams won bronze at the US Rowing Youth Championships for 2x, and placed fourth in the women's single. Way to go rowers!

Our Junior sailing program is premiere, with sailors competing at the highest levels across the globe, including South America, Europe, and throughout the U.S. Last year we hosted the 2025 USODA US National Championships with over 280 kids participating. We are lucky to have fantastic coaching led by Thomas Sylvestre, alongside coaches like Gabriel Sequeira, who helped our C420 team secure the “Triple Crown,” considered the ultimate achievement in the 420 class. Just last December, Nat Cheung won third place in the Pan American Optimist Championships in Buenos Aires out of 122 sailors across the Americas. We also have an Olympian on the staff Coach Gabriella Kidd.

The Junior Sponsorship Fund (JSF) is supported by voluntary member contributions, typically on a monthly basis and helps keep our kids competing at the highest levels. Last year we distributed $3,592 and took in $5,302. We have not marketed the JSF for several years, and I wanted to re-introduce the fund to all of you.

Today, I am asking all members to support the JSF on a monthly basis as little as $20 a month will make a huge difference in the possibilities for our youth. AWhatever you contribute, thank you from the Bridge, and the generations of junior sailors and rowers that have gotten their start here, at our home, CYC!

FROM THE MANAGEMENT

The Breeze continues to do a wonderful job capturing the heart and soul of the Club, and an incredible amount of effort goes into producing this publication every other month. I’d once again like to thank Lisa Bronitt (member) and Cassandra Hough (CYC marketing consultant) for their hard work and dedication I also encourage members to continue sharing event details, photos, and special moments directly with the team for possible inclusion in future editions of the Breeze

With the Breeze doing such a thorough job highlighting the very best of Club life, I thought it might be helpful for me to spend a little more time covering the operational side of things and shedding some light on where the on-property team is focused as we continue moving the Club forward.

As always, our owners remain committed to the long-term vision for the Club, and the moment we have more concrete information regarding future logistics and planning, we will be sure to keep the membership informed.

While my wish list for CYC continues to grow, my immediate goals remain centered around two key efforts: first, creating meaningful opportunities for our current members to engage with the Club and visit more often; and second, making thoughtful and intentional efforts to reconnect with members we may not have seen in some time.

That second goal is particularly important, as we still have quite a few members who have yet to visit us inside P130 — if you can believe it.

For those already enjoying P130, Northwind, the pool, racquet courts, and other Club amenities, you’ve likely noticed the continued efforts to enhance and improve the member experience Through the app, email communications, social media, and The Zephyr, you can also see a full calendar of both new and longstanding events designed to keep the club active, social, and engaging throughout the season

One area where I believe we can truly come together as a membership is in helping reengage those members we haven’t seen in a while While our team is actively working on outreach efforts, personal connections remain one of the strongest and most meaningful aspects of Club life, and your encouragement can make a tremendous difference

Summer is here, and we’re excited to see even more activity on the water, around the grounds, and throughout the Club We look forward to seeing you all soon

CYC SWEEPS PODIUM AT 2026 HARRIS SPRING REGATTA

Competitors enjoyed a beautiful, yet sporty, day on the water for the annual Harris Spring Regatta, held on Sunday, April 12. Principal Race Officer Gordy Palmer was able to get three of the four races off in windy conditions ranging from 13-17 knots with a chaotic sea state. The steadfast race committee did an excellent job braving the tough conditions The regatta had 21 entries in four classes that included Cruisers, Martin 242, PHRF A and PHRF B boats Unfortunately, due to the conditions, several boats were forced to retire throughout the day

The race committee was honored to have Briney Harris, granddaughter of Fred Harris, who this regatta is honoring Briney braved the rough conditions on the windward mark set boat

The competitors and race committee enjoyed a fun awards gathering after the race at P130 Awards were given out to club members Mike Guccione on Teaser for first place in the Cruising Class, S/C Tim Clarke on Turbo Shandy for first place in the Martin 242 class, Jeff Janov on The Baby Screams for first place in the PHRF A class, John Staff on Obsidian for second place in the PHRF A Class, Rich and Tony Festa on Groundhog Day for third place in PHRF A Class, and Peter Nelson on Spray for first place in PHRF B class. RULES OF RACING REFRESHER IN TIME FOR SUNSET SERIES

The third of five Yachting Evening Programs was held on March 25 in P130’s Burgee Bar A packed house listened to CYC’s own Allie Blecher as she outlined Rules of Racing and the most common errors we make, be it in ignorance or out of our competitive spirit.

There were moments of hilarity, as when one racer asked about the legitimacy of an especially aggressive move, then looked around and said “asking for a friend,” as well as poignant ones as when Allie and a young sailor exchanged inter-generational wisdom.

Just in time for Sunset Series, this refresher was topical and entertaining, and we were grateful for the chance to share Allie’s time and expertise.

STRONG SPRING SEASON FOR JUNIOR SAILING

This spring, California Yacht Club’s Junior Sailing program continued to showcase the talent, dedication, and competitive spirit of its young sailors at both local and national events In late April, several CYC sailors traveled to Fairhope, Alabama to compete in the highly competitive Opti Team Trials, one of the premier Optimist regattas in the country. The event featured 228 of the nation’s top junior sailors and provided valuable championship-level experience for the team. Hayden Zieger led CYC with a 53rd-place finish, followed closely by Nathaniel Cheung in 59th. Alongside Hayden and Nathaniel, Alexandra Simonds, Morgan Clarke, Will Hamilton, and Madeleine Clarke also represented CYC against one of the strongest fleets in junior sailing.

Just one week later, the team returned to Southern California and delivered an outstanding performance at the Opti Harken #3 Regatta hosted by Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club Nathaniel Cheung finished second overall and won the red fleet, while Hayden Zieger placed third overall and finished second in the red fleet Morgan Clarke continued a strong spring season with a seventh-place overall finish and third in the blue fleet

Additional strong finishes came from Madeleine Clarke in 11th, Alexandra Simonds in 12th, and Will Hamilton in 14th. Alexander Schendel, Wyatt Fish, Serafim Fedorov, Elsa Liu, Adriel Cheung, Oliver Gallup-Chen, and Sebastian Gallup-Chen also represented CYC throughout the weekend, continuing to build valuable regatta experience.

CYC ROWING SHINES AT REGIONALS

In its bid to establish itself as one of the premier sculling programs in the country, California Yacht Club Rowing delivered an impressive performance at the US Rowing Southwest Youth Championships

The squad placed eight boats into A finals (top six finishes), highlighted by Sebastian Atherton and Devan Gunsagar capturing gold in the U17 double, along with two additional bronze medals in this age category

The regatta also served as a qualifier for the National Championships, where CYC advanced seven boats: the Boys U19 4x, U19 2V4x, U17 4x, U19 2x, U17 2x, U17 B 2x, and the Girls U19 1x.

The squad finished third in the region in sculling, climbing 10 spots in the rankings from 2025.

CYC now looks ahead to the US Rowing Youth National Championships in Sarasota, Florida, where the team will compete against the nation’s best.

POWER FLEET & CRUISING LAUNCH AN EXCITING 2026 SEASON

This spring, California Yacht Club’s Power Fleet and Cruising community officially launched another exciting season on the water with a well-attended Cruising Kick-Off Meeting held on Thursday, March 19 in the P130 Burgee Bar The evening brought together a large group of members eager to reconnect, hear about upcoming adventures, and begin planning for a busy cruising calendar ahead.

Throughout the evening, cruise hosts shared details about their upcoming destinations, activities, and plans for the 2026 cruising season. From relaxed harbor gatherings and dinghy adventures to destination weekends and Catalina escapes, the presentation highlighted the wide variety of experiences available to CYC members, whether arriving by boat or by land.

This year’s schedule features several exciting new cruises that expand the program in fresh and creative ways. Among the new additions are the Staycation Cruise, Paradise Cove Cruise, Paddle Craft Cruise, Commodore Cruise to Catalina, Ballona Creek Dinghy Cruise, Santa Barbara Cruise, Channel Islands Cruise, and Buccaneer Days Cruise. Each offers its own unique blend of social activities, on-the-water experiences, and opportunities for members to explore Southern California’s coastline together

One of the defining qualities of CYC’s cruising program continues to be its welcoming and inclusive atmosphere Many cruises are designed so members can participate even without owning a boat, making it easy for newer members and families to get involved and build friendships within the Club community. From dockside cocktail gatherings and shared dinners to group excursions and scenic cruises, every trip is designed to create memorable weekends both on and off the water.

The enthusiastic turnout for the Kick-Off Meeting reflected the continued growth and excitement surrounding CYC’s cruising community With a full calendar of new destinations and returning favorites ahead, the 2026 cruising season is already shaping up to be one of the Club’s most active and adventurous yet

ESCAPE TO MARGARITAVILLE: CYC TAKES OVER KING HARBOR

What do you get when you combine sailboats, powerboats, margaritas, live music, tropical outfits, and a dock full of smiling California Yacht Club members? The weekend of May 15-17 was perfect in Margaritaville.

Hosted by F/C Jonathan Greenburg and Yehuda Elmakias, this year’s cruise to King Harbor was packed with sunshine, laughter, great food, and plenty of island spirit from start to finish The weekend kicked off Friday afternoon as both sailboats and powerboats arriving and medtieing along the long guest dock, creating the perfect floating party atmosphere Members strolled from boat to boat enjoying margaritas during a lively dockside happy hour before heading to King Harbor Yacht Club for dinner and live music

Saturday delivered exactly what a yacht club cruise should: dinghy rides around the harbor, relaxing afternoons aboard boats, exploring Redondo Beach, reconnecting with old friends, and making plenty of new ones along the way That evening at Port Royal Yacht Club with one of the weekend’s highlights the Cruise Hosts Cook-Off. Yehuda Elmakias presented a Mediterranean salmon entrée while F/C Jonathan Greenburg countered with perfectly prepared ribeye steaks. After enthusiastic sampling and spirited debate, the judges declared the competition an official tie.

The Margaritaville theme was fully embraced with tropical prints, leis, oversized hats, colorful sunglasses, and Hawaiian shirts throughout the evening. Marty Sasson earned top honors for Best Margaritaville outfit, while additional prizes celebrated members attending their very first CYC cruise with their boats.

Jeanette Ryan and her boat Sahbu won a complimentary one-hour use of the Club dinghy, Casper, while Susanne Cluster and Richard Perkett aboard Insecurity won a free two-hour rental of the CYC Duffy

Most importantly, the weekend captured what CYC cruises are really about: friendship, fun, laughter, and shared adventures on the water By Sunday morning, cruisers slowly headed for home with sun-kissed faces, great memories, and one common thought — we can’t wait for the next cruise Fins up, CYC!

CYC ‘DINGHY CRAWL FOR ALL’ BREAKS RECORDS

Simply put: we outdid ourselves Launching the success of last year’s dinghy tour to all e boat-accessible bars and restaurants in rina del Rey, this year we decided to go L OUT. Over 200 participants from five cht clubs showed up and SHOWED UP for a e-hour multi-club extravaganza known as e CYC Dinghy Crawl for All.

compliments of CYC members Andrea and Patrick Hynes and receive their custom passports filled with MDR yacht club history and trivia. Those adventurers without a dinghy ride were invited aboard the two CYC mark set boats skippered by F/C Jonathan Greenburg and CYC member Chris Calingaert

When event host Drew Baldwin megaphone in hand announced “crawlers start your engines,” CYC Master-at-Arms Scott Jarema kicked off the tour with a cannon blast off the fantail of the Northwind And we were off! Each participant received custom cancellation stamps for their passports at each stop We enjoyed 1944 Mai Tais at DRYC, Watermelon Margaritas at PMYC, Classic Margs at SMWYC, Trader Vic’s Grog at SCCYC, and Painkillers at CYC

Birthdays were celebrated, songs were sung, there was some drinking and dancing, but best of all we all shared our love of boating and spending time together. All roads led back to CYC, where we were able to share our new home at P130 with some signature CYC hospitality. Many thanks to our fellow clubs for making this event such a hit. If you missed it don’t worry: the CYC Dinghy Crawl for All will now be an annual tradition.

CALIFORNIA BOATER CARD CRASH COURSE

FILLED UP FAST

Sail Chair Drew Baldwin once again led a free California Boater Card crash course for members who were unable to attend last year’s session.

As of January 1, 2025, all operators of motorized vessels in California including sailboats with motors and dinghies are now legally required to carry a California Boater Card while underway

The course continues to be an important educational resource for CYC members, helping ensure boaters remain informed, safe, and compliant on the water. This year, 47 students filled the Commodore’s Lounge to review the material, prepare for the certification exam, and complete their California Boater Card requirement together.

PICKLEBALL CLINICS BRING HIGH ENERGY

Pickleball was buzzing with energy throughout March and April Weekend open play continued to be a big hit, drawing a fantastic turnout every Saturday and Sunday from 9–11 a m

It’s been great to see both familiar faces and new players on the courts, creating a fun, welcoming atmosphere for all levels We also hosted three successful micro clinics with Coach Ho, held on select Saturdays from 8:30–9 a m

These sessions have been a great way to sharpen skills in a short amount of time

Coach Ho emphasized the importance of hitting a deep serve and a deep return of serve simple adjustments that can make a big difference in controlling points.

In another clinic, players worked on high, soft drops that land in the kitchen, adding a valuable touch shot to their game.

If you’ve been thinking about improving your play or just want to mix things up, these clinics are a great opportunity Be sure to check the racquet sports calendar for upcoming micro clinics and sign up early they’ve been filling up quickly!

PADDLE-PICKLE EVENT FOR FUN, FITNESS, AND CELEBRATION

Our recent Paddle-Pickle event was a tremendous success, bringing together approximately 45 members for an exciting day of connection, learning, and friendly competition on our beautiful courts.

Designed to unite both groups in a fun and welcoming atmosphere, the event introduced participants to new sport skills through engaging instruction, interactive games, and team-based activities suitable for all experience levels.

Throughout the event, members had the opportunity to sharpen their paddle and pickleball skills while building new friendships and strengthening community connections. The courts were filled with energy, laughter, and encouragement as players rotated through a variety of games and challenges that kept everyone involved and having fun

The day concluded with a lively Cinco de Mayo celebration, where members gathered to relax, socialize, and celebrate a fantastic day together. The festive atmosphere provided the perfect ending to an event that truly showcased the spirit of our community active, inclusive, and connected.

We would like to thank everyone who participated and helped make the event so memorable. Seeing members come together to learn something new, enjoy our facilities, and create meaningful connections is what these events are all about.

We are already looking forward to hosting more community events in the future and hope even more members will join us next time for another memorable experience on the courts!

On March 1, the pool patio transformed into a lively science lab as young members gathered for a hands-on Club Sci Kids event filled with curiosity, excitement, and memorable experiments.

Kids kicked things off with the Mentos Geyser, watching soda erupt sky-high while learning about rapid carbon dioxide release. Next came the Elephant’s Toothpaste experiment, where colorful foam overflowed in seconds to demonstrate catalytic reactions.

In April, families gathered for a lively petting zoo event that transformed the Club grounds into a hands-on animal experience filled with excitement, laughter, and memorable moments

Children had the chance to interact with a variety of friendly animals, including goats, sheep, and bunnies, while many enjoyed pony rides on Ted and Stitch. Young members eagerly fed the animals, pet their soft fur, and learned fun facts from handlers guiding the experience.

The atmosphere throughout the afternoon was full of curiosity and joy as families spent time together outdoors, enjoying the sunny weather and relaxed coastal setting that makes the Club so special.

Thoughtfully organized for all ages, the event combined education, entertainment, and plenty of hands-on fun. By the end of the day, the petting zoo had once again proven to be a memorable Family Activities Committee event that left everyone looking forward to the next family gathering at California Yacht Club

St. Patrick’s Day brought a lively burst of Irish spirit to the Club We were joined by Jameson Irish Whiskey, who elevated the celebration with a specialty cocktail offering and a knowledgeable brand representative who guided members through the different expressions in the Jameson lineup adding a fun and educational twist to the evening

The energy only picked up from there, thanks to live music by “Chris Murphy Band”, who kept the crowd engaged with Irish classics and crowd favorites. Before long, the atmosphere was exactly what you’d hope for festive, spirited, and a great reminder of how much fun it is to come together as a community.

Comedy Night remains a standout favorite, offering an evening packed with laughter, great food, and plenty of personality Hosted in the Burgee Bar, the space was completely filled as members gathered to enjoy a lineup of talented comedians manyof whom have been featured on popular Netflix comedy specials.

With quick wit, relatable humor, and a few unexpected punchlines, the performers kept the energy high all night long. Paired with delicious bites and strong drinks, it was the perfect recipe for a memorable evening.

Easter was one for the books, as we welcomed over 200 members and guests to P130 for a family-filled celebration. Creativity overflowed recently as twenty-six members gathered for “Paint ‘N Sip Night” hosted by CYCWA

Individual style was on full display as members met up with friends while others enjoyed a unique date night.

Regardless of the reason, the evening was full of laughter, fine wine, and plenty of impressive artistic talent.

The artist for the evening, Leila Ziari from Paint the Town, was fantastic. Her patient, step-bystep guidance helped everyone successfully recreate a classic California scene of the Golden Gate Bridge emerging through the rolling fog. Between brushstrokes, we enjoyed a great charcuterie board prepared by Executive Chef Frank Caccamise, paired with red and white wine to keep the ideas flowing

A thank you to Director of Food & Beverage Dalia Ayoub for coordinating the food and drinks, and to Ellen Borowka and SEO Norma Pratt from Art Aficionados for creating such a wonderful evening of painting and socializing

Skylar and Connor Kalantari live in Los Angeles with their daughter, Ruby Skylar grew up in Boca Raton, while Connor is originally from Los Angeles The couple met while living in New York City before returning to Los Angeles in 2020. As new parents, they look forward to building community, spending time outdoors and by the pool, and becoming part of the welcoming, family-oriented environment at CYC.

Jen Bucher is a Santa Monica–based professional with a background in family office accounting and real estate She recently completed ASA 101 and currently crews on a local team participating in the Sunset Series. Outside of sailing, Jen enjoys travel, oil painting, tennis, and time outdoors, and looks forward to building connections through CYC’s active sailing and social community.

GALENPATTERSON

Galen Patterson is based in Santa Monica and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in IndustrialOrganizational Psychology through Harvard while running her own consulting business focused on business development. She enjoys staying active, spending time outdoors, and embracing a little friendly competition, from sports to wine nights with friends Galen looks forward to connecting with fellow members and becoming part of the CYC community

Charleston and Alecia Grimes have enjoyed boating together for many years, from exploring Lake Washington and the Puget Sound to returning recently to boat ownership. Alecia grew up on Lake Coeur d’Alene, while Charleston is originally from Los Angeles Along with their children, Cassius and Alexis, they look forward to becoming part of the strong boating community and family atmosphere at CYC

Deb and Peter Diaz live in Westchester with their sons, Samson and Benson, and are excited to deepen their family’s connection to the water and local community through CYC Southern California natives working in sales, they enjoy travel, the local culinary scene, and cheering on the Lakers and Dodgers As an active family, they look forward to creating lasting memories with fellow members.

Niall and Flavia MacMenamin, along with their children Julia, Luca, Leah, and Chloe, are excited to join California Yacht Club Niall grew up sailing in both the Midwest and Los Angeles, and after selling their boat in 2020, the family is looking forward to getting back on the water They are excited to enjoy the club’s sailing opportunities, activities, and welcoming community

Originally from New Zealand, Kent learned to sail at age five and has spent much of his career in the marine industry. Together, they look forward to becoming part of the club’s welcoming community while enjoying sailing, family activities, and time on the water

John and Jenn Kettnich, along with their children James and Jojo, share a passion for life on the water, from sailing and fishing to wakeboarding and boating around Lake Arrowhead Both work in investment and finance, while James attends Westside Neighborhood School As a family, they enjoy volunteering with local nonprofits and look forward to building friendships and spending more time on the water at CYC

Julie Hwang joins CYC with years of sailing experience, including racing, cruising, and monohull ownership

Professionally, Dr Julie is a naturopathic physician, entrepreneur, and medical advisor working across clinical care, digital health, and global wellness initiatives She values sailing as both a sport and lifestyle and looks forward to connecting with fellow members through the club’s active waterfront community
