FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Alumni, Families and Friends,

This year has been one of affirmation and celebration for our community. Calvert Hall was named the #1 Catholic School in the Baltimore area by Niche and recognized as the #1 Top Workplace in the Education category by The Baltimore Sun. In addition, our Principal, Dr. Andy Moore, was honored as The Baltimore Sun’s Midsize Business Leader of the Year. These distinctions reflect the dedication, talent, and care of our faculty, staff, and leadership, as well as the strong culture that makes Calvert Hall a place where students and educators thrive.

This issue of The Cardinal highlights one of the most important moments in a family’s Calvert Hall journey: the admissions process. Choosing a high school is deeply personal, and we are proud of the individualized, relationshipdriven experience prospective families encounter as they explore Calvert Hall. From their first visit to their final decision, families come to understand that The Hall is more than a school. It is a Brotherhood rooted in faith, excellence, and lifelong connection.

As we look ahead, I invite you to join us for one of our most anticipated events of the year, Gala Exuberance, taking place Saturday, March 21, at SECU Arena. The Gala is a wonderful

opportunity, celebrating our community, supporting the future of Calvert Hall, and inducting the Class of 2026 Hall of Fame members. I would also like to extend special thanks to Nichole Regulski and our Advancement team for their exceptional work and dedication to this evening of opportunity. Tickets are on sale now (calverthall.com/gala) and we hope to see you there.

On behalf of our Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and students, thank you for your continued support of Calvert Hall. You are an essential part of our mission and our success.

Saint John Baptist de La Salle… Pray for us!

Live Jesus in our Hearts…Forever!

Sincerely,

Brother John Kane, FSC, Ed.D. President

MIAA “A” team titles won this past fall (Varsity XC, JV XC, F/S Soccer)

I trace my fascination with the stock market to the AP Economics class I took senior year at Calvert Hall.

Like so many of our instructors, Lou Heidrick taught with a passion for his subject of expertise that was infectious. Learning about concepts like opportunity cost, supply, and inflation demystified what I was starting to read about in the Wall Street Journal, and catalyzed a lifelong interest in analyzing and valuing businesses.

One day, Mr. Heidrick proposed an interesting choice for an assignment: (a) write a 10-page research paper or (b) participate in a competition called The Fed Challenge. As much as I already liked economics, this choice was an easy one! Four classmates and I formed a team, and began modeling meetings of the Federal Open Market Committee, the committee that, every six weeks, sets monetary policy for the United States. After winning the local competition at the Baltimore Federal Reserve Bank, we moved on to Richmond, VA, and, ultimately, Washington, DC. This experience led to two internship opportunities the following summer, one at the Baltimore Fed and the other at a local commercial bank headed by Calvert Hall alumnus and supporter, Frank Bramble `66.

I continued to study economics at Boston College, where I joined the student-run investment club. Researching stocks became a beloved hobby that I was astonished to learn could also translate into a career. I was fortunate to land a summer internship analyzing stocks at Fidelity Investments in Boston. After graduation, I joined Fidelity as a full-time analyst, covering consumer, technology, and healthcare companies. For the past 15 years, I have been managing mutual funds that invest in small-cap stocks.

Serving others is a Lasallian value that has long resonated with me. At Fidelity, we strive to serve our customers by responsibly investing their hard-earned dollars. Outside of work, I serve on the board of the Catholic Schools Foundation, a non-profit that provides scholarships to elementary and high schools for 4,000 Boston area students. I’ve also enjoyed coaching youth sports, inspired by Cardinal coaches like Joe Baker `76, Mark Amatucci `70, Larry Wineke, Lou Eckerl and Andy Moore, my freshman baseball coachand French teacher!

PATRICK VENANZI `97

is a portfolio manager at Fidelity Investments. He manages $12 billion in assets for Fidelity clients, including the Fidelity Small Cap Growth Fund, which he has run since 2011. He began his career at Fidelity in 2001 as an equity analyst after graduating from Boston College in 2001 with B.S. in Finance and a B.A. in Economics. He lives in Boston with his wife and two children.

Each fall, Calvert Hall welcomes prospective families of all ages to campus for its annual Open House—an immersive introduction to life at The Hall. This year, 540 families explored the school’s 32-acre campus guided by current students who offered personalized, firsthand perspectives. Guests engaged with faculty across all academic disciplines, enjoyed performances by The Hallmen and other musical ensembles, and connected with athletic and activity coaches, experiencing the full breadth of the Calvert Hall community.

While Calvert Hall’s home is in Towson, the Admissions team extends its reach well beyond campus through Regional Nights held each fall. These events bring The Hall directly to families in their

Recognizing the critical role parents play in the admissions decision, Calvert Hall provides meaningful engagement opportunities for families as well. During Cardinal for a Day visits, parents are invited to attend a coffee session with the Admissions team and a group of 15 Admissions Ambassadors—current 12th graders representing a wide range of academic and extracurricular interests. In addition, 8th grade parents are welcomed to the Cardinal Parent Preview, a small-group experience limited to eight families per session and offered throughout the fall on Tuesdays and Thursdays. These visits allow parents to observe an academic day in progress and engage directly with school leadership and students. This fall, 116 families participated, gaining insight tailored to their individual questions and priorities.

The personalized admissions experience continues well beyond application submission. Every applicant to the Class of 2030 was offered a Cardinal Q&A—conducted by phone, virtually, or in person— providing students and parents the opportunity to address remaining questions prior to acceptance decisions.

Acceptance Day itself is marked by excitement and celebration. Accepted students receive a personalized email and outreach, followed by an official letter mailed to their home. This momentum continues with Welcome Night, where accepted students and their families return to campus for an energetic evening honoring their hard work and welcoming them into the Calvert Hall community.

Choosing a high school is a significant and thoughtful decision. Through intentional programming, personalized engagement, and a community-wide commitment, the Calvert Hall Admissions team ensures families are fully equipped to discern whether The Hall is the right fit. In doing so, Calvert Hall remains steadfast in its mission to form

Words of wisdom from our Hall community

The example of my teachers and the Brothers at Calvert Hall showed me what a life of dedication and service looks like, shaping my path as a teacher and guiding my vocation as a husband and father.

Trey Hoos `09, Science Faculty

No question... the teachers! In particular, Mr. John Thaler and Mr. Ken Stiner, who were probably on the opposite ends of the spectrum in many ways, brought passion, diligence, care for the student, and occasional humor to learning. We left sometimes laughing, always challenged, and learned a lot about the subject and life in general.

Chris Barczak `93, Religion Department Chair, Mathematics Faculty, Lasallian Animator

Both Senior and Junior retreat has impacted who I am today because it helped me develop a stronger connection with God.

Isuan Watkins `26

The constant support from teachers; especially when I am worried about completing schoolwork or living up to expectations, they are always there to help.

`27

The brotherhood formed amongst my peers. To this day, some of my closest and dearest friends are guys I graduated with from Calvert Hall. They are some of the people I can rely on the most when I need support and friendship.

Joe Zaccagnini `08, Science Faculty

One Calvert Hall experience that has impacted who I am today is commentating the Fresh/Soph soccer championship game because it made me fall in love with commentating.

Camden Daley `29

The most meaningful experience Calvert Hall has granted me is being the Host of the SportsCoat SportsCast; it has guided my career path.

Caeleb Stein `26

During my sophomore year, my mom had a significant health scare, and Mr. Baker’s kindness in checking in on me showed me that small acts can have a significant impact on others.

Aidan Flannery `15, Social Studies Faculty

My “experience” happened on a free period when my Biology teacher, Bro. Talbot Ramsbottom, told me I’d make a good midshipman.

Steve Hooper `77 USN (Ret.), English Faculty

Because of Calvert Hall, I feel confident seeking support and advocating for myself.

Deacon Riley `27

The Christian Brothers and teachers, modeling the spirit of de La Salle in their words and actions, were the heart of my Calvert Hall experience.

Walt Dobrzycki `78, Religion Faculty

For me, it’s the combination of the knowledge gained both in the classroom from teachers like Mr. Baker `76, Mr. Civ ’65, and the Christian Brothers and what I learned on the field from Coach Karpovich.

Rich Zinkand `87, English Faculty, Varsity Soccer Head Coach Scan for more words of wisdom from The Hall!

The Brotherhood. It’s what makes this school, this school. It’s special to me and everyone else who’s a part of it because we are always one.

CLUB SPOTLIGHT

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION: THEATRE AT THE HALL

The Theatre Program at Calvert Hall is thriving through the industry, diligence and ingenuity of the students and creative team that leads them.

The school year kicked off with auditions for the fall play, “Busman’s Honeymoon”. This classic British murder mystery was a hit with audiences who rewarded the cast and crew with robust attendance. The 40 students of the cast and crew worked at an impressive pace with only 7 weeks to post the show from start to finish. We are proud that students run all aspects of the show. Acting, set build, lights, sound, and stage management are all done by CHC students under the tutelage of the creative team.

Currently, the cast and crew are hard at work building the set and rehearsing the musical “Something Rotten” to be

ready for opening March 20, 2025. This hilarious 2015 Broadway show set in Elizabethan England makes fun of Shakespeare, theater, and musicals most of all. Students pride themselves on not only putting on a top-quality show but also excelling academically, participating in sports, other clubs and activities, as well as student government.

Expectations are high after the rousing success of last year’s musical “Mary Poppins”. The challenges were considerable from set design, costuming, lighting and special magic effects, not to mention “flying” two high school students. Our focus was clear then, as it is now, make the very best show that we can, for the audiences, ourselves, and for the pride of Calvert Hall.

INDUSTRY INSIGHT

Thinking Beyond This year’s Tax Bill

When most people think about taxes, the focus is often on the current year, deductions to claim, credits to capture, or strategies to reduce what’s owed in April. While those considerations matter, in my experience the greatest opportunities come from something less visible: making decisions today that shape taxes over decades.

This longer-term view aligns closely with the Lasallian value of stewardship, using our resources thoughtfully, not just for immediate benefit, but with care for the future. Tax planning isn’t only about what you save this year; it’s about how today’s choices influence flexibility, opportunity, and peace of mind down the road.

Too often, tax decisions are made reactively, focused on short-term savings while overlooking their cumulative impact. Yet it is the changes made today, how income is structured, where savings are directed, and how investments are positioned, that quietly compound and shape future outcomes. Because the future is inherently uncertain, thoughtful planning becomes less about prediction and more about preparation.

Recent tax legislation has reinforced the importance of this mindset. Shifting rules around savings, income, and incentives continue to reward those who take a proactive, multi-year view rather than a year-by-year approach.

The future will always hold unknowns, changes in tax law, career paths, or family circumstances. But planning with intention allows families to respond with confidence rather than react under pressure.

Ultimately, good tax planning isn’t about chasing the lowest number on a return. It’s about making informed decisions that support long-term goals, reflect responsible stewardship, and provide clarity in an uncertain world, values that serve families well far beyond any single tax year.

Dialed In with Shawn Vinson, Esq. `89

Principal Owner at the Law Office of Shawn Vinson, LLC

You have had a fascinating career working in law enforcement, real estate, public affairs, and law. How did each step of your career wind you through this path?

After college, I realized that I had a strong interest in helping others in their time of need, which led me to a career in law enforcement. Throughout my professional life, I have continually sought to broaden my skills and abilities across a variety of fields. That passion has always shared a common thread—the responsibility to work hard for those I serve and to protect their interests. Whether in real estate or the practice of law, it is deeply rewarding to help others navigate important and often challenging moments in their lives.

As a Board of Trustees member at Calvert Hall, what has been the most rewarding part of serving the institution?

As a student, I did not fully appreciate what it truly meant to be part of the Calvert Hall community. After becoming a Board member, I gained a deeper appreciation for the wisdom, passion, and talent of Calvert Hall’s administration, teachers, and staff. Looking back now and recognizing the impact the school has had on my life and career, it is an honor to have the opportunity to give back as a member of the Board of Trustees.

What skills or knowledge did you learn at The Hall that you have found to be the most useful in your career?

Calvert Hall provided me with a strong foundation, instilling the values of discipline, accountability, and the importance of preparation. These lessons have stayed with me throughout my career and have played a significant role in my professional success. We are fortunate to be part of the Calvert Hall community, and with that comes the responsibility to ensure the school continues to be one of the finest educational institutions in Maryland.

Who was your favorite teacher at The Hall?

Ms. June Byrd-Brown was a passionate educator who truly cared about her students. Her genuineness was evident every day in the classroom. I am grateful that Marvin Chambers `88, fellow alumni, and the school have come together to honor Ms. Byrd-Brown through the Legacy Grant, ensuring her impact continues for future generations.

Where was your favorite place on campus to be during a free? Honestly, having a free period at the end of the day was always the best. Otherwise, I enjoyed spending time in the cafeteria talking with friends.
