n June 6, we celebrated the graduation of the Class of 2026 at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen. It was a joyful day as we honored all they have accomplished and sent them forth with confidence as they begin the next chapter of their lives. Throughout this issue of The Cardinal, you will see countless examples of the remarkable achievements of our young men. We are proud of this talented and diverse class, whose commitment to excellence extends beyond the classroom into every aspect of their lives.

Calvert Hall is an independent, Lasallian Catholic school for boys which upholds the teachings of the Catholic Church.

The past few months have also been a time of remembrance. On April 24, the Calvert Hall community mourned the loss of Br. Joseph Keough, FSC, and just days later, on April 29, we lost Joseph Baker, AFSC `76. Both men embodied the Lasallian spirit, dedicating their lives to a vision of education rooted in faith, service, compassion, and the development of the whole person. Their lives remind us to lead with purpose, serve with humility, and inspire others with generosity of heart. May their legacy continue to guide our community for years to come. On June 7, the De La Salle Christian Brothers and the Christian Brothers Community at Calvert Hall formally recognized Joseph Baker, AFSC `76 (posthumously) and Charles Motsay, AFSC `76 as Affiliated Members of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. This distinction is the highest honor the Christian Brothers can bestow upon a lay colleague. It was a fitting tribute to Joe’s enduring legacy and Charlie’s extraordinary 46 years of faithful service as he entered a wellearned retirement. Speaking of milestones worth celebrating, I am deeply grateful to our alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends who supported our 11th

Annual All Day Hall Day. For more than a decade, you have demonstrated your unwavering commitment to Calvert Hall through both in-person and virtual participation. This year, thanks to your incredible generosity, we celebrated another record-breaking year of donations. Your support continues to strengthen our mission and provides opportunities that benefit every young man who walks our halls. I hope you and your families have enjoyed a restful summer filled with time to relax and reconnect. In just a few days, we will welcome the Class of 2030 to campus for their first day as Cardinals. We look forward to introducing them to the rich traditions of our Lasallian Catholic mission, grounded in faith, community, and excellence. for the Mission of Lasallian Education

n Sunday, June 7, 2026, the De La Salle Christian Brothers and the Christian Brothers Community at Calvert Hall College formally recognized Mr. Joseph A. Baker ’76 (posthumously) and Mr. Charles E. Motsay ’76 as Affiliated Members of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. This distinction is the highest honor bestowed upon a lay colleague by the Christian Brothers. Affiliation recognizes individuals whose lives and service reflect an extraordinary and enduring commitment to the Lasallian mission. Letters of Affiliation are granted with the endorsement of the Christian Brothers’ District of Eastern North America and the approval of the Superior General in Rome. Mr. Baker devoted 46 years of service to Calvert Hall. He began his career as a Mathematics teacher in 1981 and served as Assistant Principal from 2001 to 2014

before becoming Chief Advancement Officer and Director of Development. He also moderated The Endowment Club and was a member of the coaching staff for Calvert Hall’s 1980 National Championship Basketball Team. From 1984 to 1993, he served as both an assistant and head basketball coach. Throughout his distinguished career, he was recognized with numerous honors, including The Daily Record’s Icon Award in 2018 and designation as a Most Influential Marylander in 2025. He was named Calvert Hall’s Lasallian Educator of the Year in 1996, and in 2025, an endowed chair was established in his honor, ensuring his legacy will continue to inspire future generations. Mr. Motsay recently retired after completing 46 years of dedicated service to Calvert Hall. A Science educator, he served two terms as Science Department Chair and generously shared his time as moderator of the Science National Honor Society, Eagles

Nest, Biology Club, Science Club, Website Club, Dungeons & Dragons Club, and JV Baseball. He also led the JV and Varsity Cross Country programs from 1980 to 1987 and was named The Baltimore Sun Cross Country Coach of the Year in 1986. His many contributions to the school community have been recognized through honors including Calvert Hall’s Distinguished Lasallian Educator Award (1995), the Archdiocesan Award for Teaching Excellence (2000), and the Noppinger Endowed Chair for Faculty Leadership (2019). With the awarding of the letters of affiliation, Mr. Baker `76, AFSC, and Mr. Motsay `76, AFSC, join fellow Calvert Hall affiliate members, Mr. Augie Miceli, Sr., AFSC, Mr. John Thaler, AFSC, Mr. Frank Clary `53, AFSC, Mrs. Shirley Clary, AFSC, Mr. James Keelty `29, AFSC, and Mr. Louis Heidrick, AFSC.

I have been a caretaker—a full-time, live-in volunteer— at an intentional Catholic community called Bethlehem Farm since November 1, 2018. Bethlehem Farm is located in southeastern West Virginia. I left corporate America after several decades to join Bethlehem Farm following much discernment and, admittedly, much prodding from a very patient Holy Spirit. I deeply believe in Bethlehem Farm’s mission and its work within the local Appalachian community. I have been inspired and renewed in my faith, and I am humbled to have been called to be one pair of the hands of Christ, even if my hands, in my estimation, are only a very small part of His plan. Our mission of “Repairing Homes, Renewing Communities” is to improve the housing conditions of low-income residents in Summers, Monroe, and Greenbrier counties by making their homes warm, dry, and safe while forming meaningful relationships with local residents. During the 2025 calendar year, Bethlehem Farm completed 159 discrete low-income home repair projects, including repairing or replacing leaking roofs and building safe, accessible home exits with wheelchair ramps. We served 32 households and 52 individuals by providing free labor and acting as a microbank to finance materials through interest-free loans with repayment terms that are not financially burdensome. It is noteworthy that we currently operate with a backlog of more than one year, demonstrating the significant ongoing need in our community. That said, we are on track to match—and potentially exceed—our 2026 results in 2027. In 2026, 304 young people from high schools and colleges across the country participated, or will participate, in service retreat weeks that provide opportunities to deepen their Catholic faith. Many young adults who have come to the Farm have

Parents continue to thank us for the positive changes they see in their children following their time at the Farm. My experience at Calvert Hall College High School prepared me for my work at Bethlehem Farm through The Hall’s academic excellence and education in the Lasallian tradition, which guided me to become a man of intellect, faith, and integrity while fostering a strong relationship with God. It instilled in me a responsibility to serve others, especially those in need, and self-discipline to dedicate myself to the broader community. God Bless.

STEVE RASSA `78 serves as a Caretaker at

Bethlehem Farms in Talcott, West Virginia. Prior to this role, he worked for Westinghouse Electric Corporation, McCormick & Company and Keurig Green Mountain Coffee Roast. Disenchanted with the strategy of acquisitions and mergers, Steve left corporate supply chain and sourcing to answer a much higher calling – working for the Catholic Volunteer Network linking him to his current role. He also serves as a Pastoral Council member and on the Evangelization team at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Ronceverte, West Virginia.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION AWARDS CARDINAL & GOLD HERITAGE AWARD Honors alumni and friends of Calvert Hall who have contributed outstanding service over an extended period of time to the progress of Calvert Hall or the activities of the Alumni Association.

2026 Recipient: DONALD QUINN `80 Donald has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to Calvert Hall through decades of dedicated service and leadership. A member of the Alumni Association Board, he served as President from 2011–2013 and later as Vice President from 2019–2020, helping strengthen alumni engagement and advancing the mission of The Hall. Don has generously supported numerous alumni initiatives, including chairing the Brother Tom Memorial 5K, underwriting the annual Homecoming program through Advance Printing. A 2012 Alumnus of the Year recipient, Don continues a proud family legacy spanning five generations of Cardinals.

2026 Recipient: JOSHUA FANNON `98 Joshua has dedicated more than 26 years to protecting the citizens of Baltimore through a distinguished career in the fire service. A Battalion Chief with the Baltimore City Fire Department and President of IAFF Local 964 since 2021, Josh has been a tireless advocate for firefighter safety, fair labor practices, and pension reform at the local, state, and federal levels. His leadership has helped advance landmark legislation benefiting first responders across Maryland and the nation. Through his unwavering commitment to public safety, servant leadership, and advocacy, Josh has exemplified the Lasallian values instilled at Calvert Hall while making a lasting impact on his profession and community.

Nicholas is the Owner and Managing Partner of Guided Search Partners, a national executive search firm specializing in executive and professional recruiting. A graduate of Towson University, where he competed on the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Team, Nick credits Calvert Hall with instilling the values of integrity, discipline, and service that have guided his career. He remains actively involved at The Hall as a member of the Alumni Board of Directors, where he has helped expand alumni chapters, supported Homecoming initiatives, and serves as Co-Chair of the Annual Alumni Golf Outing. Nick also mentors current Cardinals as an Assistant Coach for the Varsity Golf Team.

Vice Chair of Research | MedStar Orthopaedic Institute A nationally recognized spine surgeon and researcher, Addisu was named a Washingtonian Top Doctor for 2025 in recognition of his expertise in complex spine care, spinal oncology, and research. Rising Senior | Frostburg State University Majoring in Communications & Media Studies Duncan was selected to receive the Derek Thomson Sheely Leadership Award, which includes a full-tuition scholarship for his senior year and supports a service project promoting concussion and traumatic brain injury awareness in youth sports. This summer, he is also serving as a Training Camp Intern with the Baltimore Ravens, assisting with operations and fan engagement at the Under Armour Performance Center.

His work supports market research, industry analysis, and business development initiatives that help American companies expand into international markets.

Rising Sophomore | University of Maryland Majoring in Journalism Peter is building his broadcasting experience at the University of Maryland as a broadcaster for the Maryland Baseball Network and Social Media Director for the university’s student sports radio station, covering Terrapins athletics while developing his skills in sports media.

Dr. Nicholas Randolph `16 Resident | Yale New Haven Hospital

Following his graduation from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in May 2026, Nicholas matched into the highly competitive Otolaryngology (ENT) Residency Program at Yale New Haven Hospital. Over the next five years, he will specialize in disorders of the ear, nose, throat, head, and neck while training at one of the nation’s premier academic medical centers.

CLUB SPOTLIGHT

C L AY TA R G E T C L U B Written By Club Moderator: Rob Smith (Fine Arts Department) Launched in the spring of 2026, the Clay Target Club is one of Calvert Hall’s newest extracurricular offerings. The club competes at both the state and national levels in the shotgun sports of trap and skeet, where participants test their accuracy by breaking flying clay targets. While both disciplines require precision and focus, each presents its own unique challenge. In trap, shooters fire at targets launched from a bunker in front of them, with each target traveling away at varying angles. Skeet features targets launched from two separate houses, creating constantly changing crossing angles. Unlike trap, skeet also includes stations where two targets are in the air at the same time, adding another level of difficulty. Each round consists of 25 targets, demanding exceptional hand-eye coordination, concentration, and consistency.

In its inaugural year, the club welcomed 16 student-athletes and sent competitors to the Maryland State Championships. Despite being one of the newest programs in the field, Calvert Hall captured the Novice and Junior Varsity Skeet State Championships—an impressive accomplishment that reflects the Cardinals’ commitment to excellence in every endeavor. With both fall and spring seasons, the Clay Target Club is poised for continued growth. The long-term goal is to establish clay target shooting as a MIAA-sanctioned sport while providing more Calvert Hall students the opportunity to develop their skills and compete at a high level.

A transformational new chapter is taking shape at Calvert Hall. Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of Richie and Dawn Huffman alongside The Huffman Family Foundation, construction is underway on The Huffman Family Sports Performance Center—an $800,000 renovation that will redefine a key space inside Keelty Hall while advancing Calvert Hall’s commitment to excellence in both academics and athletics.

When did you know music was your passion? I realized music would be my life’s path when I was 12 years old. Although I had always enjoyed listening to and playing music, everything changed during a visit to the Towson Library. As I browsed the shelves, I wandered into the music section, where one book seemed to be calling my name. It protruded from the shelf as if it had been placed there just for me.

Composer & piano teacher

The cover featured portraits of legendary composers—Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Schumann, who would later become my favorite, and many others. The moment I picked it up, it felt as though the world around me disappeared. In my mind, music was everywhere. While I didn’t yet have the knowledge to fully understand what I was experiencing, I knew I had discovered something extraordinary. From that day forward, I was determined to study, learn, and devote myself to understanding the incredible gift that music had become in my life.

How many instruments do you play, and which is your favorite? I play several instruments, including trumpet, drums, organ, and I’m currently learning saxophone and clarinet. But the piano will always be my favorite. It’s where I can express myself most authentically. When I sit at the piano, everything else fades away, allowing the gift of music to flow freely and, hopefully, connect with the hearts of those who are listening. Where is your favorite place you’ve performed? Of all the places I’ve performed, my favorite is York College of Pennsylvania, where I attended after graduating from Calvert Hall. It was there that I grew the most as both a musician and a person. My senior recital remains my favorite performance, featuring works by Rachmaninoff, Joplin, and my favorite composer, Schumann. That experience gave me the confidence to continue pursuing music, a journey that eventually led me to earn my master’s degree from Morgan State University. What skill did you learn at The Hall that has been most valuable in your career? Calvert Hall challenged me academically and prepared me to think critically, persevere, and embrace difficult work—skills that have served me throughout my career. Musically, the strongest foundation I received was in rhythm. Thanks to the instruction of Dr. Skripan and band directors Mr. Ecton and Mr. Hart, concepts that once challenged me eventually clicked. That foundation has grown into a deep understanding of rhythm that continues to shape me as a musician today. Who was your favorite teacher at Calvert Hall? This is a loaded question, one that I might not be able to answer truthfully, because The Hall has so many good teachers! Mr. Fan stands out for encouraging me to pursue track after I was cut from the basketball team. His belief in me led to a successful track career at Calvert Hall and in college. Mr. Mitchell never stopped believing in me—even years later, he remembered me and encouraged me to keep striving for greatness. Mr. Hooper shared my love of music and always challenged me to be my best. And my music teachers—Dr. Skripan, Mr. Ecton, Mr. Hart, Mr. Hopkins, and Mr. Marini—laid the foundation for the musician I am today. Their encouragement, mentorship, and belief in my potential continue to inspire me every time I perform. Shawn Vinson, Esq. `89 wants to know – What advice would you give a current Calvert Hall student who is trying to figure out his path? Focus on building strong daily habits. Success isn’t determined by one big moment—it’s the result of consistent discipline. In a world full of distractions, learn to balance technology and entertainment with time to think, reflect, and grow. One practice that has helped me is meditation and mindful breathing, which strengthen focus, discipline, and mental clarity. Enjoy life, but don’t let distractions keep you from becoming the person you’re capable of being. Small, intentional choices each day will shape your future.
