YEARLING SALE DISPLAYS CAL-BRED POPULARITY

A

fter providing half of the starters at the recent Del Mar race meet and carrying that momentum into the early weekends at Santa Anita, the resilience of California breeders was again on display at the record-breaking Fasig-Tipton California Fall Yearling Sale at Fairplex. Turbocharged by the creative $500,000 grade 1 bonus offered through a collaboration between Fasig-Tipton and the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association, the sale drew a wide representation of local trainers representing buyers from both coasts paying big money for Cal-breds. The result was a dozen Cal-breds selling for six figures, four of them for more than $200,000, topped by an Arabian Lion colt from breeder Richard Barton Enterprises’ popular consignment, featuring Kentucky-sired yearlings foaled in California and bred back to California stallions. Of the 12, Barton bred and consigned seven. Brisk bidding for the Arabian Lion colt concluded at $525,000, a record for this sale, which Fasig-Tipton has presented since 2019. Marc Gunderson’s MWG Enterprises was the winning bidder, smashing the sale record of $325,000 for an American Pharoah filly in 2021. The $525,000 sale price was the sixth-highest in history for a Cal-bred yearling. The all-time record is $2 million for a John and Betty Mabee-bred filly by Storm Cat (Servaline) at the 2001 Keeneland September Sale. Mike Repole, who at this sale in 2022 purchased a filly who went on to be multiple stakes winner Pushiness, paid $300,000 for a filly by Repole’s late prominent stallion Uncle Mo and bred by longtime California horseman Thomas Bachman. Matching that price was a Hard Spun

filly bred by Lee Kleinmaier III, consigned by Havens Bloodstock Agency, agent, and purchased by IJJ Racing. While pedigree and conformation are always vital in high-stakes purchases, connections of the buyers noted the attraction of the $500,000 bonus, which will be awarded to connections of the first graduate of the sale to win a grade 1 race in the U.S. at the age of 2 or 3. The bonus will be divided equally between the owner of the horse at the time of the grade I win and the owner of the horse when it was offered at the 2026 sale. Fasig-Tipton President and CEO Boyd Browning, recognizing challenges that racing faces in the state, commended California horsemen and horsewomen for supporting the sale so enthusiastically. And Fasig-Tipton was so pleased with the impact of the grade 1 bonus that one day after its California Yearling Sale, it announced a tweaked version for its Eastern Fall Yearling Sale, offering to split $500,000 between the breeder and owner of a sale yearling that goes on to win the grade 1 Preakness. The CTBA has extended its pilot broodmare program, originally announced a year ago, for the next 12 months. The program’s goal is to continue elevating the quality of broodmares in California. For mares purchased out of state at public auctions with a purchase price of $20,000 or more and 12 or younger, breeders again will be eligible to receive up to $3,000 in transportation expense reimbursement. That will be paid upon proof that the mare has been bred back to a California stallion. Mares purchased must also be in foal, and the beneficiary must be a CTBA member in good standing. This benefit, limited to five mares per breeder per year, is designed to incentivize the acquisition of top-tier broodmares, enhance the genetic pool, and position California as a leader in producing superior Thoroughbreds.

Harper Receives Pincay Award Joe Harper, the leader of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club for nearly five decades, received the Laffit Pincay Jr. Award at Del Mar Aug. 22 as part of the Pacific Classic (G1) card. The Pincay Award is named for and presented by the Hall of Fame rider, and it annually goes to those who have served the sport of racing with integrity, extraordinary dedication, determination and distinction. Harper Harper, 83, this past summer announced that he is stepping down from his full-time role as Del Mar’s chief executive officer and will assume the title CEO emeritus at the end of this year. He will continue to be part of the DMTC board of directors. Since first joining Del Mar in 1977, the California native and grandson of WALLY SKALIJ

HISTORY

10 YEARS AGO Owner/breeder Pam Ziebarth received a special memory when her California-bred AMBITIOUS BREW won the first division of the Eddie D. Stakes (G3T) at Santa Anita Sept. 30, 2016. Hall of Fame jockey Eddie Delahoussaye, for whom the race is named, was a particular favorite of Ziebarth’s late mother, Cecilia Straub-Rubens, owner/breeder of Cal-bred champion Tiznow. Ambitious Brew, a 6-year-old gelded son of Tizbud—Kathwen, by Forest Wildcat, zipped down the about 61⁄2-furlong distance to score by 13⁄4 lengths in 1:11.57. Ambitious Brew had finished second in the Eddie D. in 2014. Mike Smith rode the gelding in both Eddie D. efforts. For the 2016 edition, Ambitious Brew defeated fellow Cal-bred Richard’s Boy, with Irish-bred Hunt in third. Ambitious Brew raced through the following season, for a total record of nine wins (six of them stakes) in 25 starts and earnings of $669,425.

$125,000 Graduation Stakes by eight lengths July 25 and followed that with a seven-length victory in the $150,000 Best Pal Stakes (G3). Officer then tackled the $250,000 Del Mar Futurity (G2) Sept. 5. Under jockey Victor Espinoza, he settled into fourth early in the seven-furlong event and scored by 11⁄2 lengths in 1:22.33. Bob Baffert trained Officer, voted the 2001 champion Cal-bred 2-year-old male, for The Thoroughbred Corporation, which paid $700,000 for him at the 2001 Barretts March 2-year-old sale. Martin and Pam Wygod bred the son of Bertrando—St. Helens Shadow, by Septieme Ciel, and sold him as a yearling for $175,000 to Becky Thomas at the 2000 CTBA Del Mar sale. Officer initially stood at stud in Kentucky and moved in 2010 to Korea, where he died in 2025 at age 26.

MONEY LENDER, a 5-year-old California-bred son of Nashville—Gale Velvet, by Royal Coinage, captured the San Joaquin Handicap at Bay Meadows Sept. 18, 1976. Trained by riding great Johnny Longden, Money Lender defeated Podium by three lengths, stopping the timer in 1:342⁄5 for a mile. A.L. Diaz rode Money Lender, owned by Longden’s wife, Hazel. Longden, who during his training career conditioned Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Majestic Prince, also bred Money Lender. The colt was foaled at the Bar J. L. Ranch in Riverside. Money Lender at 2 in 1973 won four stakes, three of them graded, and the San Joaquin was his eighth lifetime stakes victory. He would add two more stakes wins while racing through 1977 to earn a total of $442,165.

California Chrome

10 YEARS AGO CALIFORNIA CHROME, trained by Art Sherman, added to his incredible career with a victory in the $300,000 Awesome Again Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita Oct. 1, 2016. Regular rider Victor Espinoza sent the 5-year-old California-bred right to the lead from the rail, getting :22.76 for the first quarter-mile of the nine-furlong race. Dortmund stuck with California Chrome early, but California Chrome ultimately cantered across the wire, 21⁄4 lengths in front of Dortmund in 1:48.07. Win the Space finished third. It was the sixth consecutive win for the multiple champion, who already had captured such races as the 2014 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness (G1). This streak included the 2015 Dubai World Cup (G1) and Pacific Classic (G1). Perry Martin and Steve Coburn bred the son of Lucky Pulpit—Love The Chase, by Not For Love, and at the time of the Awesome Again he raced for the California Chrome LLC partnership.

25 YEARS AGO As a 2-year-old in 2001, California-bred YOUGOTTAWANNA hadn’t yet showed how hard-knocking he would become. He got his first career stakes victory in the $65,000 Pinjara Stakes at Santa Anita Oct. 12, 2001, in only his fifth start. Making first attempt on turf and ridden by Laffit Pincay Jr., Yougottawanna raced in fourth early in the one-mile race, took the lead in the stretch, and held off closing Mountain Rage by a length in 1:34.42. Jerry Hollen-

dorfer trained Yougottawanna for owner-breeder Ted Aroney’s Halo Farms. A son of Candi’s Gold—Chapel’s Sister, by Midway Circle, Yougottawanna wheeled right back to win the California Cup Juvenile Stakes, also at Santa Anita. He added the El Camino Real Derby (G3) at Golden Gate Fields the following season, ultimately racing through 2007. Yougottawanna won 12 of 44 starts, eight of them stakes, for earnings of $729,127.

50 YEARS AGO Two of the seven going postward in the Khaled Handicap, named for the California sire of the great Cal-bred Swaps, at Santa Anita Oct. 17, 1976, had Khaled in their pedigree. One of those was California-bred MONTESPAN, a son of Montparnasse II—Hilly, by Hillary. Hillary was a son of Khaled. Darrel McHargue piloted Montespan in the 11⁄4-mile Khaled for 3-year-olds on the turf. Trained by Johnny Adams, Montespan defeated Samburu, a Kentucky-bred son of Cal-bred T.V. Lark, to win by a half-length in 1:592⁄5. Earlier that season, Montespan, a full brother to multiple stakes-winning Montmartre, had won the Del Mar Derby (G3T). George A. Pope Jr., who bred and owned Cal-bred Decidedly, winner of the 1962 Kentucky Derby, also bred Montespan, racing him in his El Peco Ranch colors. Montespan failed to win another race after the Khaled, competing well in allowance company through 1977.

Caps and Carnage Remains Undefeated COADY MEDIA

California-bred 2-year-old Caps and Carnage remained undefeated when he scored in the $50,000 Gold Rush Futurity Aug. 16 at Arapahoe Park. He obliterated his field by 20 3⁄4 lengths. Caps and Carnage wins Gold Rush Ridden by Luis Futurity Valenzuela for trainer Dru Hall and owner Candice Davis, Caps and Carnage led almost from the start of the six-furlong race, continuing to widen his advantage to the wire. The gelding stopped the timer in 1:11.34 over a sealed track labeled good. Caps and Carnage previously won the King County Express Stakes at Emerald Downs, Turf Paradise Open Spring Futurity in Arizona, and Sue Wallis Memorial Futurity at Wyoming Downs. Richard Barton Enterprises bred Caps and Carnage, a son of Dads Caps—Fracas, by Violence. Checkmate Thoroughbreds bred the Arcangelo colt, who is out of the Cal-bred Clubhouse Ride mare Sweet Helena. Eaton Sales consigned him as agent, and Shortleaf Stable bought him.

Zimmerman to Receive Goldstein Award Amy Zimmerman, a longtime Santa Anita executive, sports TV producer and network executive, and former staff writer and photographer at this magazine, will receive the Jane Goldstein Exemplary Leadership Award. The award will be presented at the Oct. 12-14 Horse Racing Women’s Association’s conference in Lexington, Ky. A member of the Santa Anita staff since 1986, Zimmerman worked her way up through the ranks of various broadcasting and management roles prior to assuming her current role as senior vice president and executive producer. She has also worked Zimmerman extensively with NBC Sports on horse racing coverage since 1988, including coverage of the Breeders’ Cup and Triple Crown races. Zimmerman was the founding network executive producer for HRTV, launched in 2002. She served as the executive producer and senior vice president of production and programming until the 2015 sale of HRTV to TVG. The award is named for ground-breaking turf publicist Jane Goldstein, a longtime director of publicity at Santa Anita. Goldstein in 2022 was recognized with the inaugural presentation of the award, which then was named for her. “Jane Goldstein is one of the most important people in my life,” Zimmerman said. “She’s been an idol, a boss, a mentor, and, more importantly, for more than 40 years a treasured friend.” In recognition of her hard work and dedication to the sport, Zimmerman has been honored with major awards such as 32 Eclipse Awards as executive producer, producer, co-producer, or associate producer; four Sports Emmys; 12 Regional Emmys as a producer and/or writer for original productions; and four International Simulcast awards. “Nothing could please me more than knowing Amy Zimmerman is being honored with this award,” said Goldstein. “Our paths were similar, starting by loving horses, then finding the thrill of horse racing, and working our way into jobs in the sport. Now, she collaborates with people at all levels while keeping the well-being of horses uppermost.” KATIE JONES

Monty Roberts Monty Roberts, who developed an international reputation with his popular equine starting method and was a former director of the CTBA, died Aug. 1 at his Flag Is Up Farms in Solvang, Calif. He was 91. Roberts came from an equine family in Northern California. Horses he was involved with included two-time Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (G1) winner Alleged. Roberts bought the 1974 son of Hoist the Flag—Princess Pout, by Prince John, for $40,000 and sold him for $175,000 at a CTBA Sales 2-year-old in training sale. Santa Anita Derby-G1 winner An Act and California-bred champion Walk In the Sun are among the other stakes winners Roberts started. Along with his wife, Pat, Roberts ran Flag Is Up for many years as a Thoroughbred operation, standing stallions as well as starting horses. He developed his starting method, whereby he could get an unstarted horse to accept a bridle, saddle, and rider in about 30 minutes in a round pen. That became popular worldwide, especially after Queen Elizabeth II invited him to England to demonstrate his method. Roberts later wrote an autobiography called The Man Who Listens to Horses: The Story of a Real-Life Horse Whisperer. Roberts demonstrated his starting methods at many CTBA forums and workshops. “I don’t call it breaking, but starting,” Roberts told this magazine in 1989. “They are not broken horses at the end of 30 minutes; I don’t like to make that claim. But they’re started, and probably the best way to verbalize that is that they have been caused to accept the rider and the saddle in that amount of time and to respond to the bridle and bit. But it’s just the early phase of the process of starting a horse.”

GSS—CTBA & Graduation Stakes

REDDAMS STRIKE GOLD WITH PAVEL FREE CLOSER, NET PAR SCORE AT DEL MAR BY LENNY SHULMAN

J

That sire, who stands at Paul and Zillah Reddam’s Ocean Breeze Ranch near Bonsall, has dominated this season’s proceedings at the seaside oval, with his progeny winning eight of their first 16 starts while dominating the California-bred ranks. Typical was the first week in August. Reddam Racing homebred Free Closer excelled over her field in the California Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association Stakes by 81⁄4 lengths. Just five days later, the Reddams’ homebred Net Par scored by a nose in the Graduation Stakes. Free Closer, out of the Twirling Candy mare Closing Costs, broke her maiden in open company at Santa Anita in May, earning a trip to Kentucky to compete in the Debutante Stakes in late June. Compromised by a tardy break from the gate and a subsequent poor trip, she checked in fifth that day but snapped back five weeks later to score in the 51⁄2-furlong CTBA Stakes. In the CTBA, Free Closer rated in third position under jockey Juan Hernandez early before commencing a rally on the turn that carried her to a clear lead by the time she straightened for home. She widened impressively with every stride down the stretch, stopping the clock in 1:04.40 as the 4-5 favorite and running her earnings to $101,092. Net Par finished third in his debut at Santa Anita in June going five furlongs in maiden allowance company. He broke his maiden at Del Mar in July at the same distance by a whopping 73⁄4 lengths. Three weeks later, he chalked up his first stakes victory in the Graduation at 51⁄2 furlongs. 14

ust as the summer of 1967 in San Francisco is referred to as the Summer of Love, the 2026 Del Mar meeting might well be remembered as the Summer of Pavel.

Free Closer, a daughter of Pavel, demolishes the CTBA field by 81⁄4 lengths at Del Mar

Five days later, Pavel’s son Net Par captures Del Mar’s Graduation Stakes

Sent off in the Graduation as the 9-2 third choice, Net Par, out of the Scat Daddy mare Taffeta, raced in fourth position early, two lengths off the pace. He, too, rallied on the turn, grabbing a narrow lead that diminished to a nostril at the wire over King Kameha, with oddson favorite Early Encore finishing third. The time was 1:04.82. “Net Par ran a good race in the Graduation, but he is still green,” Paul Reddam noted. “He has been difficult to load into

the gate, and he was late switching leads. We will see if he can progress going forward.” A winner of two of three starts, Net Par had earned $112,800 through the Graduation. Interestingly, all five of the trainers employed by Reddam Racing—Doug O’Neill, Simon Callahan, Michael McCarthy, Antonio Garcia, and Edward Freeman—have won races with Pavel offspring at the Del Mar meeting.

None have been in claiming races. What makes Pavel’s ascension more stunning is the slight size of his foal crops to date. The current group of 2-year-olds represents Pavel’s fourth racing crop, yet he has had only 63 named horses of racing age. Total. His average foal crop is 15, which makes the percentage of winners to starters off the charts. After the Reddams pensioned their outstanding sire Square Eddie in 2020, they bred a good portion of their mares to their dual classic winner I’ll Have Another, whom they brought back from Japan to stand at stud. But I’ll Have Another proved to be a far better racehorse than he was a sire, and he was pensioned and now resides at Old Friends in Kentucky, where visitors can spend quality time with him. “This current crop of Pavel 2-year-olds is slightly bigger because we pensioned I’ll Have Another, plus Paula Capresto bred a few to him,” said Reddam. “But that’s it. There was one guy from Washington who wanted to send a mare to Pavel, but he didn’t want to pay the $4,000 stud fee. So, that didn’t happen.” Asked if there was any indication from his previous crops that Pavel could break out in this fashion, Reddam reached for an answer. “Well, there were, I guess, the short answer would be ‘no,’ ” he said with a laugh. “Not much of a tip-off that this kind of streak would be happening. There were a few decent horses from his first crop. We had a filly named Lovin the Pavels that won first time out at Gulfstream Park who we thought was going to be a good one. But she bowed a tendon and only ran the one time.” Earlier in 2026, Pavlovian became Pavel’s most accomplished offspring when he scored in the Sunland Park Derby and finished second in the Louisiana Derby (G2), earning a spot in the Kentucky Derby (G1) field, where he ran unplaced. According to Reddam, Pavel has passed certain traits on to his progeny. One is attitude. They are generally on the mean side, “which makes them like Pavel, who would bite off your hand if you weren’t looking,” he said. “They also seem to have long, fluid strides, which is funny because they’re winning these sprint races currently. Pavel

was certainly competitive at 10 furlongs, so there is no reason to think they won’t go on. But there are so few of them that you really can’t conclude too much yet. “When Pavel was training for the Smarty Jones Stakes (G3), Ciaran Dunne, who had bought him as a yearling to pinhook, was at Parx watching him. He said Pavel galloped by him and he couldn’t hear a sound because the horse was so light on his feet, floating over the ground. Maybe if he’s passing that on to his offspring, it will speak well for their chances of routing successfully.” Indeed, Pavel (Creative Cause—Mons Venus, by Maria’s Mon) made his bones going two turns, winning the 2018 Stephen Foster Handicap (G1) and the 2017 Smarty Jones. He also hit the board in races like the Suburban (G2), Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1), and Pacific Classic (G1), and was fourth two times in the Dubai World Cup (G1) on his way to earning better than $2 million. Reddam became involved in Pavel’s career in 2016, when his Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist was preparing to run in the Preakness (G1). Dunne and bloodstock

agent Dennis O’Neill were also in Baltimore and told Reddam about a 2-year-old they could not pinhook because the colt had some issues that were keeping him from handling serious training. “They suggested I take him for a month, try him out, and if I liked him, I could buy him,” Reddam remembered. “I was on a high of having Nyquist win the Derby, so I decided to buy the horse sight unseen. Ciaran thought I was nuts. I think I paid $150,000 for him. It took more than a year to get him to the races, but I guess it was worth the wait.” Reddam holds breeding rights to three stallions—Pavel, Nyquist, and the Square Eddie colt Listing. The lion’s share of his California mares will go to Pavel, but it will be interesting to see how much outside business the stallion attracts coming off his magical summer. The phone at Ocean Breeze has started ringing with inquiries, but Reddam said he will wait until the end of the year to set Pavel’s stud fee for 2027. He did state, however, that it will rise based on the accomplishments of his runners this season at Del Mar.

Golden State Series—I’m Smokin Stakes

Early Encore draws off under jockey Emisael Jaramillo to score in the I’m Smokin Stakes

CAL-BRED ENCORE

EARLY ENCORE FOLLOWED MISS MONICA AT DEL MAR FOR SIRE EARLY VOTING BY JACK SHINAR

E

arly Voting may be this year’s most surprising first-crop sire in North America. The unheralded son of Gun Runner showed why over Labor Day weekend at Del Mar.

On Sept. 5, the Bob Baffert-trained Miss Monica romped to a 61⁄4-length triumph in the Del Mar Debutante (G1). That oddson win made Early Voting the first freshman stallion to sire a grade 1 winner this year. Two days later on Del Mar’s closing day, Early Voting’s son—the aptly named California-bred Early Encore—demolished a field of overmatched Cal-bred juveniles by

the same 61⁄4-length margin for trainer John Sadler in the $100,500 I’m Smokin Stakes. The two stakes victories improved Early Voting’s progeny earnings to $954,056 with 10 winners from 33 runners as of Sept. 11. Aside from Golden Pal, the clear standout in the first-crop sire division, Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Early Voting ranks closely with such popular freshmen stallions as Life Is Good, Jackie’s Warrior, and Flightline. He stands for $12,500 at Taylor Made Stallions, near Nicholasville, Ky. Early Encore, bred by Richard Barton Enterprises, was the first offspring from the deceased Into Mischief mare Lute Player. Barton purchased the well-bred mare in foal to Early Voting for the bargain price of

$30,000 at the 2023 Keeneland November breeding stock sale. Lute Player originally sold for $425,000 at the Fasig-Tipton selected yearling showcase in 2020. But in four lifetime starts as a 4-year-old for trainer Chad Brown, she failed to hit the board and was retired for breeding. She was in foal to Barton stallion Shaaz in 2025. “We unfortunately lost the dam following colic surgery shortly after she foaled her Shaaz filly,” explained Kate Barton Penner, the company’s executive vice president. In the I’m Smokin, a Golden State Series-eligible stakes at six furlongs on dirt, Early Encore was looking to atone for a third-place finish as the odds-on choice in Del Mar’s Graduation Stakes a month earlier. He was matching up once again with the Graduation winner, Net Par. Breaking from the far outside in the field of seven at 9-10 odds, Early Encore was away cleanly for jockey Emisael Jaramillo and vied on the front end while racing wide. Not so Net Par. Leaving from the stall inside of Early Encore, the Pavel colt was restless in the gate, then stumbled badly at the break while finally settling near the back of the pack. Meanwhile, Early Encore cleared his pace rivals to take control with three furlongs to run. The bay colt repelled a challenge from the outsider Fumano’s Fire rounding the turn and then drew off in the stretch to an easy victory in a time of 1:11.32. Net Par rallied for second but never threatened the winner. Cupid Cowboy was third. Sadler bought Early Encore for $90,000 at the Fasig-Tipton California yearling sale last year. The colt races for a large ownership group that includes Desert Sun Stables, Saints or Sinners, and U Racing Stable. Early Encore won for the second time in three tries—breaking his maiden on debut at Santa Anita by 63⁄4 lengths in May—and now has $108,000 in earnings. Sadler said he likes Early Encore’s potential. “We think he was kind of fighting the track in his last start,” said the veteran trainer after recording his 95th career stakes win at Del Mar, second most in the track’s history. “He had more time to work over it and he worked better and better, so we expected a big run from him.”

PROBLEM SOLVED FIBONACCIS RIDE HAS OVERCOME MANY OBSTACLES

L

ike the mathematical compression code used for data storage that inspired her name, Fibonaccis Ride’s racing career has been a journey in problem solving.

But thanks to a couple of surgeries and the patient tutelage of trainer Antonio Garcia, James Shenouda’s homebred filly had all the right answers at Del Mar Aug. 15, winning the $150,500 Solana Beach Stakes in an eye-catching 17-1 upset. “She’s just really stubborn and she wants things her way,” Shenouda said. “Tony is phenomenal. He has a really good eye. I call him a preventative trainer. He seems to see things before they become problems.” Given a ground-saving trip by Hall of Fame rider Victor Espinoza, the stalking 4-year-old daughter of Clubhouse Ride burst through a slight opening in deep stretch to snatch the lead. The chestnut filly then drew off to a 11⁄4-length triumph over a field that included multiple California champion Grand Slam Smile. In posting her first stakes victory, Fibonaccis Ride completed the one-mile Golden State Series grass test for fillies and mares in 1:34.74. Another longshot, Quick Kate, fin-

ished second, while 3-5 choice Grand Slam Smile faded to fourth behind Wink and a Grin after battling a contested pace. Fibonaccis Ride began her career with plenty of promise, capturing her debut at Los Alamitos in the fall of 2024 with a front-running six-length romp. “But she developed a weird lump in her chest, and that lump just kept getting bigger,” explained Shenouda, whose horses run in the red silks of Zephyr Racing. “We took her to the vet at Santa Anita (the Southern California Equine Foundation Hospital), Dr. (Ryan) Carpenter, and he found that she had a massive abscess. If cut in half, it was the size of a cantaloupe. He sliced it and drained it, and it took a couple of weeks for it to completely drain.” Fibonaccis Ride was out of action for 71⁄2 months, but when she returned, a new problem arose: bone chips in one knee. She missed six months following a minor clean-out, returning in February. By then, she was in the Garcia barn and the veteran trainer went to work on a

number of other issues. Like her dam, Wild Caroline, a Florida-bred daughter of Wildcat Heir, Fibonaccis Ride has a stubborn streak, Shenouda said. She doesn’t like dirt in her face, so they put her on turf. She prefers routing over sprinting and has excelled at the one-mile distance. She won’t change leads, either. She also doesn’t like to race with horses on her outside. Since she was on the rail for the Solana Beach, that posed a problem. “We were nervous about that, but she handled it well, so maybe she’s better,” Shenouda said. “We think there’s more in the tank.” The final piece of the puzzle was Espinoza, who now has ridden her to backto-back victories with two seconds before that. “Victor knows she’s a little on the crazy side,” Shenouda said. “But he seems to have figured her out.” Clubhouse Ride is the only sire who has been bred to 15-year-old Wild Caroline. They have been mated eight times. Of her five foals to race so far, all have been multiple winners. Fibonaccis Ride is her first stakes victor. Fibonaccis Ride’s 2-year-old sister Divine Kismet has recently debuted, and Wild Caroline has also produced a yearling filly. Fibonaccis Ride boosted her career bankroll to $230,100 with four wins and three seconds from 13 starts.

CAL-BRED YEARLING SETS RECORD $525,000 ALL 12 SIX-FIGURE PRICES WERE CAL-BREDS BY TRACY GANTZ FASIG-TIPTON PHOTOS

N

ot only did a California-bred set a Fasig-Tipton California record price of $525,000 at the Sept. 30 Fasig-Tipton California yearling sale, but the colt also led a list of 12 who brought six-figure prices at the sale—all of them Calbreds. It demonstrated the importance of Cal-breds to racing in the state and the demand for horses who can compete in the lucrative Calbred incentive program.

The sale’s strength became apparent not only through the six-figure horses, but also through the breadth of support from consignors and buyers. Barton Thoroughbreds, the state’s leading breeder for the past three years, sold seven of the six-figure horses, while Andy Havens’ Havens Bloodstock Agency and Adrian Gonzalez’s Checkmate Thoroughbreds each sold two and Rancho San Miguel sold one. “One thing I was very encouraged about was that most of the Southern California leading trainers were in attendance on the sales grounds and worked hard,” said Boyd Browning, president and chief executive officer of Fasig-Tipton. Some trainers bought in their own names and as agents for owners, while others advised the listed buyers. Michael McCarthy, John Sadler, Mark Glatt, Mike Puype, and Brian Koriner were among the trainers who purchased six-figure horses. McCarthy bought the sale topper, a son of Arabian Lion—Imperial Pippin, by Empire Maker, for Marc Gunderson’s MWG Enterprises. Barton Thoroughbreds consigned the colt, a half brother to Cal-bred Pushiness, a three-time stakes winner and earner of $386,426. McCarthy had bought Pushiness at the 2022 Fasig-Tipton sale for $115,000 on behalf of Repole Stable. “Marc Gunderson expressed an interest in supporting California racing,” McCarthy 22

Regional Sales Uncle Mo—Tomlin, by Distorted Humor, for Tom Bachman’s Fairview. Sadler and Dottie Ingordo-Shirreffs went to $300,000 for Little Spunshine. Havens consigned the daughter of Hard Spun—Miss Segura, by Palace Malice. Ingordo-Shirreffs signed the ticket in the name of IJJ Racing, a partnership she has with nephews Jeff and Jim Jones. Sadler said that he was the underbidder on the sale topper for a different ownership group. “I thought she was really solid,” Sadler said of Little Spunshine. “The pedigree’s good. She’s a nice-looking filly who looks like she will train well. You have to pay up for ones you really like, that’s what the theme of the day is. You’ve got to get in on the ones you like.” IJJ Racing went in with other partners on two more six-figure horses: a daughter of Yaupon for $130,000 and a daughter of Rock Your World for $110,000. Glatt and Puype advised owners on the purchase of a son of City of Light and a son of Yaupon, respectively. JPM Bloodstock for Blinkers On Racing Stable went to $245,000 for the City of Light, and Slugo Racing bought the Yaupon colt for $170,000. “He’s the right size, he’s well-balanced, he vetted perfectly clean,” said Scott Sherwood of Blinkers On. “We like the sire, and there’s activity down on the dam side.” The sale averaged $35,224, with 139 grossing $4,896,200. In 2025, the sale averaged $32,293, with 143 grossing $4,617,900. “We’ve making every effort to be supportive of the California market, and today was encouraging,” said Browning. “It is vitally important to the entire North American Thoroughbred industry, from a sales standpoint, from a breeding standpoint, from a racing standpoint, from a gambling standpoint—it’s a very, very important segment of the market.” New for this sale is a $500,000 bonus being offered in partnership by FasigTipton and the CTBA for the first 2026 sale graduate that wins a grade 1 race in the U.S. as a 2-year-old or 3-year-old. It will be divided equally between the owner of the horse at the time of the grade 1 win and the owner of the horse when it was offered at the 2026 sale. 24

Our front paddocks are fenced with a combination of white vinyl posts and rails with v-mesh for added safety. The larger pastures also have v-mesh horse fencing. ince opening its gates in August 2017, Barton Thoroughbreds has established itself as one of California’s premier Thoroughbred breeding and boarding operations. Situated on nearly 200 acres in the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley, just thirty minutes from Santa Barbara and two and a half hours from Santa Anita Park, the farm’s moderate climate and expansive pastures provide an ideal environment for breeding, raising, and rehabilitating Thoroughbreds.

the Dad Bod. His latest standout is Caps and Carnage, the undefeated two-year-old out of Fracas who won the Gold Rush Futurity by more than 20 lengths, along with victories in the King County Express Stakes, Sue Wallis Memorial Futurity, and Turf Paradise Open Spring Futurity.

The results continue to speak for themselves. Barton Thoroughbreds was California’s leading breeder by earnings in 2023, 2024, and 2025, and capped an exceptional 2025 season by breeding both California-bred Champion Two-Year-Olds: Champion Male Ocean Bear and Champion Female Mohaven. Barton also bred Express Kid, who emerged on the national Triple Crown trail and earned 20 Kentucky Derby qualifying points. Barton Thoroughbreds is led by farm manager Kevin Dickson, who previously managed Vessels Stallion Farm for twenty-one years before spending two years as farm manager at Ocean Breeze Ranch. A graduate of Colorado State University, where he studied Equine Science with an emphasis in reproduction, Kevin brings decades of experience to the continued development of the farm. Administrative director Lacey Coler is another integral part of the Barton team, combining her industry experience, attention to detail, and passion for horses while serving as a valuable point of contact for clients. Barton Thoroughbreds offers boarding, breeding, foaling, sales preparation, and lay-up and rehabilitation care. The farm’s 45-stall lay-up barn is complemented by an EquiVibe therapeutic stall, Eurocizer, aqua treadmill, sand paddocks, and multiple grass paddocks, allowing the team to provide individualized care and quality turnout for Thoroughbreds at every stage. Barton Thoroughbreds is proud to stand Cat Burglar, Dads Caps, One Bad Boy, Tap Back, and Shaaz. Cat Burglar, a multiple graded stakes-placed black-type winner by Unbridled’s Song, raced for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert and finished in the money in 19 of 22 career starts. He defeated two Breeders’ Cup Classic winners, and his leading runners include multiple stakes performer Baby Kristen, an earner of more than $290,000, and Trump Era, who became stakes-placed with a runner-up finish in the Snow Chief Stakes. Dads Caps, a son of Discreet Cat, won or placed in ten graded sprint stakes and captured the Grade 1 Carter Handicap twice, retiring with earnings of $1.1 million. His runners include stakes winner Kangaroo Court, Grade 3-placed Doris Mae, and Iowa Breeders’ Derby winner Rockin

One Bad Boy, a multiple blacktype winning son of Twirling Candy, earned more than $600,000 during a career highlighted by victory in the prestigious Queen’s Plate Stakes at Woodbine. He also won Santa Anita’s Lure Stakes wire-to-wire and earned four triple-digit Equibase Speed Figures. Tap Back, by Einstein (BRZ) out of a Tapit mare, was an exceptionally precocious two-year-old. He broke his maiden at Del Mar before winning the $200,000 Golden State Juvenile Stakes by six lengths, and also placed in the King Glorious and I’m Smokin Stakes. His first runners reached the races in 2025 and quickly produced winners, including Crunchy at Del Mar. Shaaz, the Grade 3-placed son of Uncle Mo out of a graded stakesproducing Mineshaft mare, enters an exciting new chapter in 2026 as his first crop reaches the yearling sales. A $1.1 million two-year-old purchase, Shaaz won his first three starts, defeated subsequent graded stakes winner Hopkins, and earned a career-best Equibase Speed Figure of 110 in the Grade 3 Steve Sexton Mile Stakes. Strongly supported by breeders, Shaaz covered more than 150 mares in his first two seasons at stud, and his first crop has impressed with its athleticism and conformation. Success has followed Barton Thoroughbreds from the farm to both the racetrack and sales ring. At the 2025 Fasig-Tipton California Fall Yearlings Sale, Barton consigned the $250,000 sale topper, a Corniche filly out of Carmelita bred by Richard Barton Enterprises. With championship-caliber Cal-Breds, nationally competitive runners, an emerging generation of young stallions, and continued investment in exceptional care, Barton Thoroughbreds remains committed to helping clients breed, raise, and develop their next champion. needs. With increased competition in Southern California and all the other challenges we face in thoroughbred racing today, it’s important for your breeding and racing stock to receive a solid foundation that will give them the best chance to excel at the racetrack. ROOM TO GROW

Anyone visiting the farm will immediately recognize the hundreds of acres of lush, irrigated pasture. These pastures serve as the backbone of our farm and certainly stand out as unique in the industry. At Daehling Farms, our focus is to provide a solid foundation to raise a great racehorse. This requires space, pasture and an overall setting that will allow a horse to mature the way a horse should. Much of California is challenged by a lack of available water. We are blessed that our farm is located in an area with a strong supply of deeded groundwater and serviced by a municipal utility district with electricity rates for irrigation wells that are historically lower than other providers throughout the state. As a result, we can better manage our feed costs to keep our rates lower than average. Lower rates do not translate to a reduced level of care or nutrition, but rather reflects our desire for our customers to better succeed financially. FROM FARM TO RACETRACK In addition to breeding and boarding, we are also one of a few farms that offer starting and training. Our facility includes an all-weather 3/8-mile track, covered round pen, eurociser and most importantly dedicated training staff that have been with our operation for years. We work to ensure stability and consistency for the horses we start and prepare for the racetrack; with the focus on meeting the needs of both our owners and trainers.

Trained by Eclipse Award Winning Trainer Chad Brown, he says “When at his best, I was confident to run FLAVIUS in the best races in his division. FINNEUS is out of the California champion Ghostzapper broodmare My Fionna, topping the 2020 edition of the Fasig-Tipton California yearling sale at $200,000. Runner-up in the 2021 Del Mar Futurity (G1), he was the Cal-bred champion 2-year-old male that year. FINNEUS was especially partial to Del Mar during his racing career, winning the Golden State Juvenile Stakes in 2021 prior to finishing second in both the Best Pal (G2) and the Futurity. FINNEUS earned $447,272 during his three-year racing career. Lovacres is excited to also offer sophomore stallion HOPKINS, the first son of Quality Road to stand at stud in the Golden State. His initial crop of yearlings is outstanding. The graded stakes winner from trainer Bob Baffert defeated Eclipse champion sprinter Straight No Chaser in taking the G3 Palos Verdes by 2 ¼ lengths, and was just a neck shy of winning the Group 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen at Meydan Racecourse in 2024. Out of the Salt Lake mare Hot Spell, HOPKINS sold for $900,000 as a Keeneland September yearling. Contact us at (562) 547-9848 or visit our website, WWW.LOVACRES.COM, for additional information.

RACING’S FUN IS IN THE RIDE

ames Shenouda has two guiding principles when it comes to horse racing: You’ve got to be willing to take a chance and you’ve got to have fun doing it. Shenouda’s stable is named Zephyr Racing, and he often partners with Alfred “Sonny” Pais and Dr. Vahe Melikyan, who races as Innergy Racing Corp. They have disagreements, Shenouda says. But in their bantering, there’s plenty of laughs as well. “You can’t take horse racing too seriously,” said the indefatigable owner and breeder. “It’s supposed to be fun. If you take it too

seriously, you aren’t having any fun. The way I look at it is that if you have a shot, you should take it. When I’m looking at a race, I’m always thinking top four. If I think we’re in the top four (of the horses nominated), then I feel you should try it.” Shenouda said he admires people such as Jerry and Connie Baker, who haven’t hesitated to run their talented California homebred filly Om N Joy aggressively against top-caliber rivals, producing a grade 2 win and multiple grade 1 placings. Over the summer she finished fourth taking on males in the $1 million Pacific Classic (G1). “I love their spirit, and it

has paid off for them,” he said. Shenouda, 47, put that philosophy in action when he and trainer Antonio Garcia decided to enter his 4-year-old filly, Fibonaccis Ride, in Del Mar’s Solana Beach Stakes at a mile on the turf in mid-August. His faith was rewarded when the California-bred daughter of Clubhouse Ride burst to a convincing victory at odds of 17-1. They ran her back on closing day of the Del Mar meeting Sept. 7 in the John C. Mabee Stakes (G2T). But the tougher competition and longer distance conspired in part to relegate Fibonaccis Ride to a seventh-place finish. Shenouda was anything but disappointed afterward, however, noting that she didn’t regress figure-wise (82 Beyer) from her winning effort and she proved she could run well against several more accomplished horses. Two days earlier, he and Pais scored when their homebred Big Vengeance, in his 12th start against maiden allowance rivals, overcame a stumble at the start of the 61⁄2-furlong test to end his long losing streak. The Calbred posted a front-running 41⁄4-length triumph at 32-1 odds. “Two things—we changed surfaces and running style,” Shenouda said of the improvement. “We’d been trying forever to get this horse a dirt race that fit him, and we wanted him on the lead.” By Mr. Big, 3-year-old Big Vengeance is a gelded half-brother to their stakes winner Curlin’s Kaos, a son

PROTECTION AGAINST DISEASE

One of the basic strategies when trying to avoid disease is to vaccinate foals and young horses, to start building immunity to common equine diseases. Dr. Bruce Connally, a veterinarian in Berthoud, Colo., in a sports-medicine practice, says respiratory disease in young horses can be minimized with a good vaccination program. “The main recommendation regarding vaccination against influenza, for instance, is to vaccinate horses 3 years old and under or any horses performing/competing and subjected to exposure from horses outside their own farm,” Connally said. “Influenza can be a serious issue for young horses, and not that big a deal for adults that already have some immunity and exposure.” Routine vaccinations with properly timed first injections and appropriate boosters can help the young horse build a foundation for immunity. “Flu is one of the big ones we think about for youngsters, along with tetanus,” Connally said. “You want to get their immunity started.” The things to vaccinate for, and age to start— for foals—are listed in the American Association of Equine Practitioners’ recommendations. This is something you should also discuss with your veterinarian, especially when working on a herd health program for a breeding farm.

WARTS

One issue that is mainly a young-horse problem is warts. These are not a health hazard unless on rare occasions they become so large they obstruct the nostrils or make the area so sore that the horse won’t eat. The most common warts seen on young horses appear around the muzzle. “We rarely have to treat warts because they run their course and disappear after the horse mounts an immune response,” said Connally. Dr. Tia Nelson, a veterinarian/farrier in Helena, Mont., says these are often called yearling warts. “Occasionally, they can be painful, so if you are training the young horse and trying to use a halter or bridle, it might cause the horse to resist,” she said. “Typically, we recommend ignoring them because in most horses they run their course quickly and the horse has immunity against warts for the rest of its life. Occasionally, however, we see some that are so thick and large that the horse has a difficult time eating. In this situation we sedate the horse and Warts most commonly use pliers to crush occur around the muzzle some of the warts enough to make them bleed.” Warts are caused by a virus. Stimulating the immune system by getting the virus into the bloodstream acts like a vaccination. “This enables the horse’s body to mount an immune response quicker than when you simply leave warts alone,” Nelson said. “Usually within a week to 10 days they shrink up and are all gone. In the meantime, we may give the young horse Bute or Banamine to help with the discomfort while recovering.”

everal issues can show up more commonly in young horses than adults. This is partly due to the fact that young horses are still building immunity to common diseases and parasites. Their growing bodies are also vulnerable to growth-related problems—and overwork issues if put into training at an early age.

Health

Developmental orthopedic disease is a blanket term that covers such things as crooked legs and contracted tendons at birth, physitis, osteochondrosis, osteochondritis dissecans, subchondral bone cysts, and wobbler syndrome. Some of these problems develop as the foal grows, and some show up when the young horse is put into training. Many young horses are at risk for some types of DOD because of the way they are bred, raised, and managed— with rich diets and not enough exercise. Growth problems cover a diverse group of skeletal diseases. “Some of these are present when the foal is born—crooked legs, knock-knees, etc.,” said Connally. “But others develop as the foal begins to grow, especially if the foal is pushed for growth or does not have balanced nutrition. “Most of these problems require intervention. In some situations, the veterinarian may take x-rays and then decide whether this is a surgical case or a management case. Some problems can be corrected with diligent hoof trimming or a change in diet and exercise. “On the knock knees and crooked fetlocks at birth, intervention must take place within the first weeks of life, while you have a chance to make corrections as the foal grows.” For DOD problems in which foals are growing too fast (which can adversely affect bone structure), owners can cut back on their feed or wean them early. “Some of the predisposing factors in many orthopedic diseases include nutritional imbalances (such as trace minerals like copper, and balance of calcium and phosphorus),” said Connally. The foal also needs proper exercise. All bony structures need some concussion and stress to develop properly, with adequate strength. They thicken and develop more fully in response to stress, as long as it’s not too much stress. Some DOD problems don’t show up until later, when the young horse is put into training as a long yearling or 2-yearold. “By that time, trying to correct these with management is nearly impossible,” Connally said. “By then we’ve lost most of our opportunity to affect the growth 48

ing worm larvae before they reach maturity and produce eggs that would show up on a fecal sample. Connally recommends treating young horses for parasites early, to prevent potential damage. “Foals can pick up enough ascarids to cause colic that will kill them,” he said. “We need to start deworming babies at about a month of age, with a second deworming at about 2 months. “Management is important, too. If the young horse is on a dry lot with no green grass and good manure management, some parasites won’t be much problem. A lot depends on the environment. Horses in a dry corral don’t have as much chance to pick up worms because they are not exposed as much as the horses out on pasture. Drying and heat tends to kill parasites.”

plates. They are already closed or are closing. Some things have to be managed as early as possible. “By that time there may also be weak areas in the bones/cartilage of joints, and maybe bone cysts, and the young horse doesn’t stay sound when put in training. OCD, for instance, is often occult; you don’t see lameness until you put the horse into training. You may just see a bulky hock, increased joint fluid, or intermittent mild lameness. If you x-ray those joints, you can see the lesions and provide treatment. In many instances it will be surgical, although other things like shock wave therapy sometimes help.”

WORM PROBLEMS

Young horses are more vulnerable to worm damage than adults simply because older horses have usually developed immunity to some of the parasites, especially ascarids. It’s rare to find many ascarids in an adult horse. Deworming strategies have changed, however, from traditional, periodic deworming. “What we recommend now is fecal checks for worm eggs in adult horses to see which horses are carrying worm loads,” said Nelson. “If we find horses that are shedding worm eggs, we figure out how to deal with it. If they don’t have a problem, we don’t worry.” With foals, however, owners can’t wait that long to start deworming because a lot of damage is already done by the migrat-

“Strangles, influenza, and rhino are probably managed better with a good biosecurity program than by vaccination,” said Connally. “The vaccines are fairly effective, but not spectacular. To rely on vaccines without biosecurity is a huge mistake. “We need to keep babies from being exposed to other horses, and it makes sense, vaccination-wise, to try to protect young horses during their weanling through 2-year-old years as they move out of the biosecurity of their home pasture. Start first vaccinations at the recommended ages and do the appropriate boosters. Influenza vaccinations are important up to 3 years of age, and I wish the rhino vaccine was more effective.” Biosecurity is the best disease prevention, especially on a farm where there are young horses. “Using vaccine is great, but biosecurity when raising young horses is extremely important,” Connally said. “When I worked with racehorses, I had one client who every year could count on his 2-year-olds doing fine in training and staying incredibly healthy at his place—and then he’d take them to the track and half of them would be unable to run in their first race because of respiratory disease. You couldn’t completely fix the problem with vaccines alone.” Young horses are more vulnerable to respiratory diseases than adults, especially

if stressed at weaning or exposed to contagious diseases. “It could be strangles, influenza, rhodococcus, a herpes virus, or some other virus or bacteria,” said Nelson. “As a start, I suggest that people make sure their mares are well vaccinated before foals are born, so foals will obtain antibodies soon after birth via colostrum. Then we hope that as maternal immunities are waning, their own immune systems are coming on line and starting to take over this protective role. “Strangles is a controversial vaccine, and something you might not use unless you’ve had a problem with strangles on your farm. There are situations where your veterinarian might feel you need to give horses some protection. Generally, strangles vaccination is not recommended, but in the face of an outbreak it can give horses some protection. The main thing is to not vaccinate horses that have already been exposed, or horses that have high titers, or you increase risk for developing purpura hemorrhagica.” The AAEP core vaccines do not include flu, rhino, or strangles, Nelson pointed out. Horses not exposed to other horses and living on a facility with good biosecurity shouldn’t need those. Respiratory diseases in young horses should be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Consult with your veterinarian to discuss herd health. OVERWORK/HEAVY TRAINING

“There are feet and leg issues, and damage that can be easily done to young horses from overtraining,” said Connally. “This can include sore joints and bucked shins.” Nelson said, “Bucked shins is an overuse injury, but with resolve with rest. In earlier years, many racehorse trainers and veterinarians pin-fired those injuries—which enforced a rest—which achieved the same results. There’s no need to use pin-firing or blistering. All these young horses need is about five to seven weeks off work, and when you bring them back, they are no longer sore. “Bucked shins are micro-fractures of the dorsal cortex of the cannon bones in the front legs due to excessive concussion. When they recover, those bones are actually stronger. Growing bones need some stress in order to strengthen. Just don’t overdo it. I have seen older horses with bucked shins, so it’s not just a young-horse syndrome; it’s

an over-use syndrome.” Young horses in training are more commonly affected because they are put into harder work than they have been accustomed to in their short lives, as bones are still growing and maturing. DENTAL ISSUES

Nelson has seen serious overbites (“parrot mouth”) and underbites (“sow mouth”) in foals. “I found that if we address this early in life, floating their teeth periodically starting at about 3 months of age, we can correct some of these problems,” she said. “One client’s foal had an overbite so severe that you could put your thumb between the front of his bottom teeth and the back of his upper teeth. By the time he was 3 years old, his bite was perfect, with top and bottom incisors matching evenly. But we were diligent to float his teeth every 3 months, to take off the little ridges and bars. “We have to be proactive while babies are young and the jaw still growing—and you have a chance to make a difference. There is a lot of plasticity in young growing bones.” It pays to monitor a young horse’s teeth and mouth, even if things are normal at birth. Young horses sometimes have problems when shedding baby teeth and permanent teeth are coming in. The temporary back teeth usually push up through the gums sometime during

Tooth bumps can occur under the lower jaw

www.ctba.com

the foal’s first month of life. These baby teeth remain in place until they are pushed out when the permanent teeth come in. Horses ages 2 through 4 are in the process of losing those baby teeth (caps), and they are normally shed in sets of four. The first set of caps is shed when the horse is about 21⁄2 years of age, the second set at 3 years of age, and the final set of caps comes off at about 31⁄2 to 4 years of age. Not all young horses follow the textbook schedule, and sometimes there are complications. In humans, baby teeth come loose and fall out as permanent teeth come in. But in horses the baby teeth deteriorate as the new permanent teeth start to erupt. The old ones become hollow. Sometimes these caps do not detach from the gums when the permanent teeth are pushing them out. This condition is called a retained cap and can cause inflammation of the gums, a painful mouth, and sometimes a sinus problem if it is in the upper jaw. If the retained cap is not removed, it may cause the new tooth to grow in at improper angle or become impacted. Permanent molars trying to come in may also become impacted if the jaw is too narrow. It’s common to see “tooth bumps” under the lower jaw in a horse that is 3 or 4. Most of these resolve over time but sometimes need attention. “Dental issues need to be addressed,” said Nelson. “Teeth should be evaluated at least annually, and sometimes more often in the young horse. “Tooth problems in a young horse can interfere with training due to pain caused by the bit. Or he may become hard to bridle. Mouth pain can make a horse perform poorly. The horse may be tossing its head because the premolars have sharp little edges and hurt when the bit hits them. It’s fairly common to have to remove ‘wolf teeth’ for instance. “Any time a young horse is not being agreeable when starting training, we check teeth, feet, backs (I am also a chiropractor/ acupuncturist). We determine whether we are just dealing with attitude rather than pain (and avoidance) due to a physical problem. Attitude is pretty rare, in my opinion, in young horses. There’s usually a physical component involved.”

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. Earnings are from all available Northern Hemisphere racing and include adjusted money from Japan and Hong Kong. For example, the North American average earnings per starter in 2024 was $31,529 or 86% of the 2024 average earnings per starter in Japan. To put 2025 earnings on par, all Japanese progeny earnings are multiplied by 86% before being credited to a sire’s progeny earnings. For 2025, Hong Kong earnings are adjusted by 17%; Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through Sep. 20, 2026.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. Sires that are dead, pensioned, or no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old. Statistics are from all available Northern Hemisphere racing with earnings adjusted for Hong Kong and Japan. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
