SIX CAL-BREDS NOMINATED TO TRIPLE CROWN
Six California-breds, including Pavlovian and Express Kid, were nominated to the Triple Crown when early nominations closed Jan. 26. In their next starts, Pavlovian and Express Kid nished one-two in the Feb. 15 Sunland Park Derby.
Reddam Racing LLC bred and races Pavlovian, a son of Pavel—Mandy’s Grace, by Bellamy Road. Prior to the Sunland Park Derby, Pavlovian ran second in the 2025 Best Pal Stakes (G3) and third in the Jan. 17 California Chrome Cal Cup Derby.
Richard Barton Enterprises bred Express Kid, a son of Bodexpress—Sensationalize, by Street Sense. Express Kid, now owned by Paradise Equine Farm LLC and Bradley and Sharon Kleven, previously captured the 2025 Remington Springboard Mile Stakes and ran second in the 2025 Prairie Meadows Freshman Stakes.
Express Kid is among the Cal-breds nominated to the
Reddam Racing also nominated its homebred Smoovin Saturday, winner of the 2025 King Glorious Stakes. Smoovin Saturday is a son of I’ll Have Another—Smoove It, by Square Eddie.
e other three Cal-breds nominated to the Triple Crown, making them eligible for the Kentucky Derby (G1), Preakness (G1), and Belmont Stakes (G1), are Start the Ride, Dark Omen, and Romantic Ride.
Harris Farms Inc. bred and owns Start the Ride, a son of Upstart—Elusive Ride, by Tiznow. Start the Ride
won the Jan. 17 California Chrome Cal Cup Derby.
Larry and Marianne Williams bred and own Dark Omen, a son of Om— Halo Darlin, by Lucky Pulpit. Dark Omen broke his maiden in his debut last year.
Steve Moger bred Romantic Ride, a son of Clubhouse Ride—I Love Romance, by Black Seventeen. Holly and David Wilson own Romantic Ride, who broke his maiden in his third start Feb. 8.
STALLION NEWS
■ First Foal for Brickyard Ride
California-bred Brickyard Ride, a multiple graded stakes winner who stands at Rancho San Miguel, was represented by his first foal Jan. 24: a filly born at Rancho San Miguel. Bred by Jerry Engelauf, the youngster is the fourth foal out of the winning mare To the Limits, an 11-year-old Cal-bred daughter of Swiss Yodeler. Racing as a homebred for Alfred “Sonny” Pais and trained by Craig Lewis, Brickyard Ride won or placed in 21 of 31 starts and compiled a career bankroll of $925,477. Racing from age 2-7, Brickyard Ride won eight stakes, including the 2021 San Carlos Stakes (G2), the Kona Gold Stakes (G3) twice, and two editions of the Don Valpredo California Cup Sprint.
Brickyard Ride, a 9-year-old son of Clubhouse Ride—Brickyard Helen, by Southern, Image, retired to stud at Rancho San Miguel and covered his inaugural book of 44 mares in 2025.
■ Storm the Court Gets First Foals
Two colts born just days apart became the first foals for Storm the Court. The Eclipse Award-winning champion 2-yearold male of 2019 stands at Eclipse Thoroughbred Farm in Buellton.
The first colt, foaled Jan. 29, is out of Aunt Chippy, a daughter of Pioneerof the Nile. The second, foaled Feb. 1, is out of Bad Betty, a daughter of Palace Malice. Eclipse Thoroughbred reported that Bad Betty will be bred back to Storm the Court.
A 9-year-old son of Court Vision—My Tejana Storm, by Tejano Run, Storm the Court raced six seasons, earning $1,426,503. He won the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) and placed in five other stakes.
John Shirreffs, who died Feb. 12 at age 80, will always be known as the trainer of the brilliant and charismatic mare Zenyatta. But he trained many more top runners, including Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Giacomo and California-bred Eclipse Award winner Bertrando during the latter part of that runner’s career.
Shirreffs had most recently saddled Westwood to win the Jan. 31 San Pasqual Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita. Shirreffs was known for his attention to detail and his horsemanship, especially when it came to the care and feeding of his horses, and he had handled Westwood with his usual patience.
“He likes a challenge,” Shirreffs said after the race. “He likes to be asked and pushed along a little bit. He was a little immature, but he had this big stride that put him in places that were very advantageous because he could handle the company.”
Born in Kansas and raised in New York and New Hampshire, Shirreffs served in the Marines during the Vietnam era. Early in his equine career, he worked at Loma Rica Ranch in Northern California where Noor would later be buried. Shirreffs began training in 1976, ultimately saddling nearly 600 winners for earnings of more than $58 million.
Bruce Headley and Bobby Frankel trained Bertrando for much of his career, but Shirreffs took over in 1994. He won that year’s Wickerr Stakes and Goodwood Handicap (G2) with Bertrando, owned by breeder Ed Nahem and Marshall Naify’s 505 Farms. For 505 Farms, Shirreffs also trained millionaire and multiple grade 1 winner Manistique.
Shirreffs went on to train such major winners as Life Is Sweet, Tiago, After Market, Harmonious, Gormley, and, more recently, Baeza. But Zenyatta earned him the most notoriety, as he shepherded the popular mare through a nearly perfect record that included a 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) win that roused the large crowd at Santa
Anita to a thunderous din.
Horse of the Year in 2010, Zenyatta earned three consecutive Eclipse Awards as champion older female and was voted into the national Hall of Fame in 2016. She won 19 of 20 races, with one second, for earnings of $7,304,580.
Shirreffs, his wife, Dottie, and Zenyatta’s owners, Jerry and Ann Moss, were very generous with Zenyatta, showing her to fans often. Her famous dancing in the paddock before a race endeared her to many, and Shirreffs often posted YouTube videos of her works.
Shirreffs took his stewardship of horses very seriously, once saying, “As a trainer, you are responsible for that horse’s health and wellbeing while it’s in your care. And when it leaves your care, you want it to be in the best possible condition it can be for the next stage of its life, whether it’s going to be a riding horse, a broodmare, whatever it is.”
In addition to Dottie, Shirreffs’ family included his sister, Anita; Dottie’s son, bloodstock agent David Ingordo; David’s wife, trainer Cherie DeVaux; and Ingordo’s daughter, Reagan.
Martha Miller
California owner Martha Miller, who was a partner in such good California-bred runners as Harlington’s Rose, died Feb. 11. She was just shy of her 97th birthday.
Born in Santa Barbara and a lifelong racing fan, Miller once recalled ducking under turnstiles to get into racetracks for free as young as 5 years old.
“My father raised me on the track—I grew up with it,” she once recalled. “I swore that if I ever had the money, I would have a racehorse.”
Miller attended CTBA seminars regularly and became friends with the late Leigh Ann Howard, a CTBA past president. She became involved with several partnerships on horses, including Cal-bred Reason to Be and New Zealand-bred Kessem Power. More recent-
ly, Miller was among some partnerships put together by former CTBA chairman Terry Lovingier.
Harlington’s Rose was Miller’s best horse. Steve Knapp trained the daughter of Harlington—A Rose for You, by Orientate, and was also a co-owner, along with Tom Halasz, Paul Newhart, and Ryan Johnson. Harlington’s Rose earned $420,058 and won the 2015 Las Flores Stakes (G3) and 2014 Kalookan Queen Stakes.
Miller also had a deep love for the outdoors. She worked for more than 70 years at Yosemite National Park, in the high country during summer and at the Ahwahnee Hotel in the winter. She retired at age 91.
Donations may be made to the Yosemite Conservancy by contacting Lindsay Dahlgren at (415) 523-4768.
Randy Winick
Former trainer and California racing steward Randy Winick died Feb. 15 in Florida. He was 76.
The son of owner, trainer, and breeder Arnold Winick, Randy spent much of his training career in California. His charges included Brocco, winner of the 1993 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) and 1994 Santa Anita Derby (G1), and grade 1 winners Dontstop Themusic, Country Queen, Mitterand, and Spence Bay.
Randy Winick often trained for Albert Broccoli, owner of Brocco and the producer of many James Bond movies. Together they attended Barretts sales of 2-year-olds in California, buying several top runners, including Brocco. Brocco sold for $215,000 at the 1993 Barretts 2-year-old sale.
Winick won 340 races as a trainer for purse earnings of more than $10.2 million. Following his training career, he served as a steward at several tracks in Northern and Southern California, working in that capacity until 2017.
His survivors include a daughter, Tierney Rae, and a sister, Stacey.

California Flag
California Flag, the 2009 co-California-bred Horse of the Year with Dancing in Silks, died Jan. 22 at age 22. He had been living in happy retirement at Peacefield Farm in Temecula.
Bred by the Hi Card Ranch of Keith and Barbara Card, California Flag began racing for his breeders as a 3-year-old in 2007. The son of Avenue of Flags—Ultrafleet, by Afleet, broke his maiden in his first start at 4 and would go on to win 11 of 27 races for earnings of $1,288,825.
Trained by Brian Koriner, California Flag captured his first stakes at the 2008 fall Oak Tree meeting, in the Morvich Handicap (G3T). That race was over Santa Anita’s hillside turf course, at which California Flag became a specialist. Today, the California Flag Handicap, contested over the downhill turf course, is presented during the Santa Anita fall meeting as part of the Golden State Series.
After adding the Hollywood Turf Express Handicap (G3T) later in 2008, California Flag had his best season in 2009. He won the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint as well as the Morvich again and the Green Flash Handicap. He was voted Cal-bred Horse of the Year as well as champion Cal-bred turf horse.
California Flag traveled to Hong Kong and Dubai, coming away with a third in the 2010 Al Quoz Sprint (G3).
Keith Card died in early 2011. California Flag continued to run in the name of Hi Card Ranch, adding a third edition of the Morvich that fall. He ran twice at age 8 in 2012 in the name of Barbara Card, E-Racing.com, John Fradkin, and Kevin Jacobsen, and he won that year’s San Simeon Handicap (G3T).
QUALIFYING CLAIMING LEVELS
The following claiming levels for California owners premiums and stallion awards are currently in effect:
ANITA PARK / $40,000
After winning the California Cup Turf Classic, California-bred WHAT A VIEW jumped into grade 1 company to capture the $400,345 Frank E. Kilroe Mile (G1T) at Santa Anita March 12, 2016. Jockey Kent Desormeaux rode for trainer Kenny Black, and What a View led throughout to score by 33⁄4 lengths over favored Bolo in 1:35.57 on a turf course labeled good. “He was enjoying himself, and I think he enjoyed the soft ground,” said Desormeaux. Old English Rancho bred What a View, a 5-year-old son of Vronsky—Oceans N Mountains, by Manila, with Patsy and Sal Berumen, and he raced for the trust of the late E.W. (Buddy) Johnston, Rob Riggio’s Finish Line Racing LLC, and the Berumens. Rob’s father, Bob, had owned several horses with Old English, and Rob and Old English were also partners on Acceptance, the champion Calbred 2-year-old male of 2014.
California-bred TIZNOW returned from his 2000 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) victory to add the historic Santa Anita Handicap (G1) March 3, 2001. He opened his 4-year-old season
by winning the San Fernando Breeders’ Cup Stakes (G2), then finished second to Wooden Phone in the Strub Stakes (G2). With Chris McCarron again aboard for trainer Jay Robbins, Tiznow in the Big ’Cap ran second behind Wooden Phone’s early pace and took his revenge to defeat that runner by five lengths in 2:01.55 for 11⁄4 miles. Cecilia Straub Rubens bred Tiznow (Cee’s Tizzy—Cee’s Song, by Seattle Song) and was able to see him win the Breeders’ Cup. She died shortly thereafter, and in 2001 her revocable trust campaigned the colt with Michael Cooper. Tiznow was named Horse of the Year in 2000 and added a second Breeders’ Cup Classic in late 2001 before going on to a successful stud career.
The San Felipe Handicap (G2) of March 14, 1976, gave the racing world its first real look at CRYSTAL WATER. In only his fourth start and second win, the California-bred became a graded stakes winner. The legendary Bill Shoemaker piloted Crystal Water, who completed 11⁄16 miles in 1:423⁄5 while defeating Beau Talent by five lengths. Fellow Cal-bred Double Discount finished third. Roger Clapp trained Crystal Water for Connie Ring, who bred the colt, a 3-year-old son of Windy Sands—Soft Snow, by T.V. Lark. It was just the beginning of a phenomenal career, as Crystal Water in his next start won the Hollywood Derby (G1), ultimately became a two-time Cal-bred Horse of the Year, and won such races as the Santa Anita Handicap (G1), Hollywood Gold Cup (G1), and Oak Tree Invitational (G1T).

CTBA Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner
Le Méridien Arcadia
Two days after California-bred California Chrome won the Kentucky Derby (gr. I), another Derby winner, jockey Mario Gutierrez, was honored in Sacramento.
e Latino Spirit Awards, established in 2002, are held in conjunction with Cinco de Mayo. Gutierrez, who piloted I’ll Have Another to win the 2012 Kentucky Derby, was one of 10 honored this year by the California Senate and Assembly. California Gov. Jerry Brown attended the dinner held the night before in conjunction with the awards.
CHRB Meeting
e timing couldn’t have been better, as many wanted to talk about the state’s own California Chrome. is is the rst time that the Latino Spirit Awards have honored a racing gure. Gutierrez’s photo will hang in the Capitol Rotunda for a month along with the other honorees.
Gutierrez was born in Mexico and initially began his riding career in his native country. He later was a huge success at Hastings Racecourse in Canada before switching his tack to Southern California. Paul Reddam, owner of I’ll Have Another, noticed the youngster’s ability and suggested him to trainer Doug O’Neill for I’ll Have Another in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita. Gutierrez never lost on the colt in four starts—the Lewis, Santa Anita Derby (gr. I), Kentucky Derby, and Preakness Stakes (gr. I).

GOT CHROME?
In the run-up to California Chrome’s successful victory in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I), the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association spread the word via a colorful button. With a tagline: “Got Chrome? California does! It pays to be Cal-bred” the CTBA promoted California Chrome and the California breeding industry.
People who “liked” the CTBA’s Facebook page received one of the buttons, as did some lucky fans who flocked to California Chrome’s final work at Los Alamitos April 26.
Then it was off to Kentucky, where CTBA’s Doug Burge and several board members also passed out buttons on the famed Churchill Downs backstretch. The buttons proved so popular that they also passed them out at Pimlico before the Preakness Stakes (gr. I).

FOUR CAL-BREDS WON STAKES ON VALENTINE’S DAY WEEKEND
BY JACK SHINAR
The Valentine’s Day weekend was certainly a sweet one for California-bred stakes winners at Santa Anita and elsewhere, led by 3-year-old Pavlovian’s gritty upset of a second Cal-bred, Express Kid, in the listed $500,000 Sunland Park Derby in New Mexico Feb. 15.
Other Cal-bred stakes winners over the weekend were Clovisconnection in the $100,000 Bill omas Memorial earlier on the Sunland Derby card, Man O Rose in the listed $100,000 Palos Verdes Stakes at Santa Anita, and Majestic Oops in the listed $150,000 American Beauty Stakes at Oaklawn Park.
Bred and owned by J. Paul Reddam and his wife, Zillah, and trained by Doug O’Neill, Pavlovian earned 20 points toward a possible start in the May 2 Kentucky Derby (G1). e team previously won the Derby with I’ll Have Another in 2012 and Nyquist in 2016. Could it be time for yet another?
“We’re excited—we got him back from Sunland and he looks phenomenal, he looks tremendous,” O’Neill said of Pavlovian a few days after the thrilling Sunland Park e ort, where the gray son of Reddam’s stallion Pavel prevailed by a bare nose.
e trainer said that they have their eye on the $1 million Louisiana Derby (G2) at 13⁄16 miles March 21 at Fair Grounds.
“It’s so early on in the season, but the Louisiana Derby is tempting,” O’Neill said. “Timing-wise and the distance, it denitely ts.”
Pavlovian snapped a six-race
losing streak in the 11 16-mile Sunland Derby since a maiden win last June at Santa Anita in his second start. He followed that e ort with a distant runner-up nish behind Desert Gate in the Best Pal Stakes (G2) at Del Mar. Several races against Cal-breds followed with little success. But with added distance, Pavlovian woke up with a closing third behind Start the Ride in the 11⁄16-mile California Chrome Cali-
fornia Cup Derby Jan. 17.
With blinkers back on at Sunland (he wore them in his rst six races), Pavlovian was bet to 5-1 odds in a eld reduced to six by a couple of scratches. He was ridden for the rst time by Edwin Maldonado, his fourth jockey in four races. e heavy favorite was Express Kid, the 11-10 choice after a smashing 61 2-length triumph at 34-1 in Remington Park’s Springboard Mile in late December.
Leaving from the rail, Express Kid went straight to the front under Juan Hernandez, but Pavlovian, breaking next to him, was right with the speedy son of Bodexpress. at wasn’t the plan, Maldonado said after the race, adding, “I had a split second to make up my mind and I said, ‘I think (Express Kid) is the horse to beat, so I’m already here, I might as well stay here.’ ”
And that’s the way they went, with second choice Bricklin sitting third all the way around. ey rattled o fractions of

:23.07, :46.40 and 1:10.07. Express Kid opened a 11⁄2-length advantage leaving the far turn, but Pavlovian battled back, reaching even terms past midstretch. In a rousing nish, Pavlovian got his nose in front just as they hit the wire in 1:42.22.
“My horse didn’t really want to go by,” Maldonado said of Pavlovian. “I think he’s just learning, he’s just getting to know what he’s supposed to do. He has a big future ahead.”
O’Neill, who won the Sunland Derby for a record-tying fourth time, said of Pavlovian: “I’m so optimistic. He exceeded our expectations. He showed a newer, better version of himself. He had always been a horse that would drop back and try to come from behind with a late run.
Pavlovian’s dam is Kentucky-bred Mandy’s Grace, by Bellamy Road out of the multiple graded stakes-winning Storm Cat mare Magicalmysterycat. Mandy’s Grace won once in three lifetime starts racing for Reddam. ree of her rst four runners have been winners.
e race was also worth 10 Kentucky Derby points for the unlucky Express Kid and his new ownership group, Paradise Equine Farm and Bradley and Sharon Kleven. e colt sold for $800,000 at a Fasig-Tipton digital ash sale in January following his front-running win in the Springboard Mile for prior owner Steve Haar. Express Kid was bred by Richard Barton Enterprises and is now trained by Justin Evans.
“He beat a great horse, Express Kid. It all seems to be coming together for him at the right time.”
Pavlovian earned $297,000 for the victory, boosting his career total to $413,500 with two wins from nine starts.
O’Neill compared Pavlovian to his sire, Pavel, winner of the 2018 Stephen Foster Handicap (G1) and a lifetime earner of more than $2 million.
“He’s got a real strong foundation now, and there’s a lot of stamina in his bloodlines,” O’Neill said. “It took Pavel a little while to nd himself, too, and they are both tough-minded.”
CLOVISCONNECTION
Evans, who has been winning at a nearly 40% clip during the current Sunland meet, was luckier with another horse he saddled for the rst time. Bill and Judy Hedricks’s 6-year-old homebred Clovisconnection earned his 10th career stakes triumph to open the New Mexico track’s Feb. 15 stakes action in the Bill omas Memorial.
Clovisconnection, the 7-2 third choice, snapped a four-race losing streak in winning the 61⁄2-furlong test by one length.
e Vronsky gelding had been away from the races for more than three months after splitting the eld in a seven-horse e
Chosen Vron Stakes for Cal-breds going seven furlongs Nov. 8 at Del Mar.
Bill Hedrick said Clovisconnection needed that break and was working superbly at Sunland, where he began training in early January.
“He just loves that track,” Hedrick said, noting the winning time of 1:14.91 was slightly over a second o the track record. Asked if Clovisconnection would remain in New Mexico, he answered, “Yes, for the time being, I think so. He’s doing well and the purses are better there.”
After a slow start from the rail, Clovisconnection, ridden by Luis Negron, tracked a lively pace while forced wide on the turn. Despite that, he progressed rounding the bend, then engaged the favorite, Ryvit, in the drive, shaking free in deep stretch. Clovisconnection held o the closing Neiman safely to the wire to collect his 13th lifetime win from 25 starts. e chestnut, out of the Perfect Mandate mare La Darling, has now banked $567,300.
MAN O ROSE
When it comes to consistency, it’s hard to top Bruce Zietz’s homebred win machine Man O Rose. e 6-year-old gelding stepped up to open stakes company for the rst time with an impressive 11⁄2-length victory as the even-money choice in the six-furlong Palos Verdes Feb. 15.
It was the fth consecutive stakes triumph for the Golden State-bred son of Stanford, who overcame the rail starting position and a slight stumble to win smartly as the even-money choice. He’s now won 12 of 19 lifetime starts while totaling $632,965 in purses. e victory left the excitable Zietz ecstatic afterward.
“You can’t even imagine having a horse like this,” he said.
Trainer Je Mullins has been working to get Man O Rose to relax behind horses when he’s covered up on the inside, and that e ort paid o here. A slow start for jockey Emisael Jaramillo—aboard Man O Rose for the rst time—left them in fourth behind the pacesetting Pilot Commander. Usually rank in such a circumstance, Man O Rose showed none of that in the Palos Verdes, settling about 11⁄2 lengths o the leader and holding his position without incident.

California-bred Stakes Winners Nationwide
“ e two things I didn’t want to happen both happened,” Zietz said. “First, he drew the rail and then he didn’t break well. I turned to my son and told him, ‘It’s over.’ ”
Fractions were solid–:22.49 for the rst quarter mile and :44.98 for the half. On the turn for home, Jaramillo tipped his mount to the outside for a clear path to duel with Listenupshance, who had taken the lead in the drive from a tiring Pilot Commander. Man O Rose left Listenupchance behind in deep stretch in a nal time of 1:09.87. Listenupshance was a clear second, with Pilot Commander third.
Mullins credited Jaramillo, who replaced Maldonado for the Palos Verdes, with keeping his mount cool under pressure. Maldonado, out of town to ride Pavlovian in the Sunland Derby, had been aboard Man O Rose for all 11 of the bay’s prior victories.
“Words can’t describe what he is; he is a special horse,” Mullins said of Man O Rose, who is out of Kathleen Rose, by Good Journey. “We had some Calbred races in mind for him down the road, but we were going to have to wait a while. So we decided to get in here and just to give him another race and keep him sharp and t.”
Zietz said he believes Man O Rose is an even better horse around two turns and would like to see him try a dirt mile this summer.
MAJESTIC OOPS
e veteran 6-year-old mare Majestic Oops, coming o a strong 2025 campaign, got her new season o to a solid start with an impressive 31 4-length tally in Arkansas.
e 2-1 favorite in the six-furlong American Beauty Feb. 13, Majestic Oops rocketed home in a nal time of 1:09.52—just a tick o the stakes mark of 1:09.32—after trailing the eld for the opening quarter-mile.
With Francisco Arrieta aboard for trainer Dan Ward and owners Medallion Racing, Evan Trommer, Agave Racing Stable, and Sheila Regan, Majestic Oops won for
the eighth time in 34 attempts and boosted her career earnings to $724,309. e bay daughter of Majestic Harbor—Miss Oops, by Olmodavor, was bred by William and Sandy Dory and Gary and Janet Kropp. She began her career in Northern California in 2023.
Last year, Majestic Oops won three times in 11 starts and banked $492,775. She won the rst two stakes races of her career in 2025—the Dig A Diamond at Oaklawn Park and the listed Lady’s Secret at Monmouth Park—and was graded stakes-placed in Monmouth’s Molly Pitcher Stakes (G3) and the Ballerina Stakes (G1) at Saratoga.
Majestic Oops had not raced since a ninth-place nish in the Breeders’ Cup Dista (G1) at Del Mar Nov. 1.
Her win in the $200,000 Dig A Diamond was the rst for trainer Ward, the longtime assistant in California to Hall of Fame conditioner Jerry Hollendorfer.
In the American Beauty, Majestic Oops stalked the pace toward the inside before Arrieta angled her out coming into the stretch. Her rivals were no match for her as she drew o in thenal furlong. Asternia, who vied for the lead throughout before giving way late, was second with Benedetta third.
“We only sprinted her twice, and she ran second and was third in a grade 1,” said Ward. “I’m very grateful to the owners that they wanted to campaign her at age six and left her with me.”

ALFRED PAIS
BY JACK SHINAR
Horse racing has given Alfred “Sonny” Pais the ride of a lifetime.
HOMEBRED BRICKYARD
RIDE EMBARKS ON A STALLION CAREER
Pais (pronounced Paze) made his money through income property investment, but horses were always where his heart is. at’s been true from the time he was a young man out of high school in the 1970s and helped train harness racers for his father, to the present day as a breeder of oroughbreds.
Beginning in the 1990s, Pais has had several successful California homebreds. His best has been the blazingly quick Brickyard Ride, a multiple graded stakes victor who won 13 of 31 races and
earned $925,477. Retired from the track in 2024, the former sprinter is on a journey that is far from over, as Pais embarks on a stallion career for the statuesque chestnut son of Clubhouse Ride. Brickyard Ride is the all-time leading earner for his sire.
“I’m a senior citizen on the hustle,” remarked the loquacious Pais, now 72. Always a small breeder, he has grown his broodmare base to 12 as he looks to support Brickyard Ride, standing his second season at Rancho San Miguel in San Luis Obispo County. Pais wishes he could do more, but his resources are limited. As it is, he gures he could possess
upwards of 40 horses by the time the stallion’s newest foals arrive this year.
“I’m not Paul Reddam, or somebody like him,” Pais said. In order to manage the in ux, he’s sold percentages of most of the horses he has in training or getting ready to begin their racing careers. His strategy also includes breeding a couple of his better mares to Kentucky sires in order to bring top market value.
“I’m trying to stay a oat for as long as I can,” Pais said, “and Kentucky is where the action is.”
It’s not easy to establish a new stallion in California these days, Pais conceded, but in Brickyard Ride he feels he has a worthy candidate. He said he felt that way from the rst time he saw the horse train. e impeccable chestnut stands 16.3 hands and has a strong Candy Ride pedigree through his sire, the popular Clubhouse Ride. Sons of Candy Ride such as Gun Runner, Twirling Candy, and Vekoma have reached national prominence as stallions. Brickyard Ride is out of the multiple winner Brickyard Helen, by threetime grade I winner Southern Image.
With Brickyard Ride’s natural speed, Pais said, “He’s got the credentials to make a great stallion, if he gets the right mares.
“To be honest, he’s always been an alpha male. In his races, the only time he relaxed is when he was in front. If he wasn’t in front, he wouldn’t relax. In the races he lost, it was usually because of that.”
Pais remembers being with trainer Craig Lewis while

watching Brickyard Ride work for the rst time.
“After the work, I turned to Craig and asked him, ‘Have you ever seen anything like that?’ Craig said ‘nope.’ ”
Brickyard Ride, who raced from ages 2 to 7, was an eight-time stakes winner for Lewis, including the 2021 San Carlos Stakes (G2) and back-to-back editions of the Kona Gold Stakes (G3). His other stakes victories include two scores in the California Cup Sprint and the Sensational Star on the grass.
He covered 44 mares in his freshman season. His rst foal was delivered Jan. 24 at Rancho San Miguel.
Pais and Lewis, who have been friends for at least 30 years, have partnered as breeders on Brickyard Ride’s 3-yearold full sibling King’s Ride. e colt has been working forwardly at Santa Anita and is nearing his debut.
Pais’ other top prospects this year include graded stakes winners Unrivaled Time, the California-bred winner of the Cecil B. DeMille Stakes (G3T) at Del Mar Nov. 30, and the Irish-bred Nitti, who was turned out following his victory in the storied San Juan Capistrano Stakes (G3T) in June. Both are trained by Leonard Powell. Cal-bred Curlin’s Kaos, another son of Clubhouse Ride and winner of the 2024 Real Good Deal Stakes in 2024, is also in training for Antonio Garcia following a lengthy absence.
When he rst broke into oroughbred racing after 20 years in the harness business, Pais had part of some horses with Mike Orman and later connected with trainer Barry Abrams. eir Cal-bred gelding Burns, by Unusual Heat and bred by Pais and Madeline
Auerbach, was owned in partnership with David Abrams. Burns won the 2011 La Jolla Handicap (G2T) at Del Mar, providing Pais with his rst graded stakes win. However, Burns, later voted champion Cal-bred 3-year-old male that year, broke down in his next start, the Del Mar Derby (G2T).
“I loved that horse; I liked to hang out in his stall with him, he was that kind of horse,” Pais said. “But something went wrong and he took a bad step. at really hurt.”
Unrivaled Time, a son of Kentucky sire Not is Time out of Pais’ British-bred mare Margot Machance, by
the Irish stallion Creachadoir, was named in honor of Wilt Chamberlain.
Pais, who has lived in Santa Monica for decades, played beach volleyball at Sorrento Beach’s sand courts and got to know the superstar center, who died of congestive heart failure in 1999 at the age of 63. Chamberlain, who ended his basketball career with the Lakers, loved volleyball and, like Pais, owned harness racers. One of his best was a pacer named Rivaltime.
“We were great friends for about 10 years,” Pais said. “ ere were a bunch of pro athletes that used to hang out there, guys like Bill Walton. Wilt always wanted to get into oroughbreds with Barry Abrams, but it never happened.
“ e thing about Wilt was he never slept. And so sometimes he’d call me at 3 in the morning, and all he wanted to talk about was betting. But he was a great guy, and I really miss him.”
Originally from a small farming town near Vancouver, Canada, Pais still has a place in Santa Monica, where he lives with his partner of about 30 years, Peili Chen.
As for Unrivaled Time, Pais sold a half-interest in the bay colt to Dr. Vahe Melikyan (Innergy Racing Corp.), of Glendale, a newcomer to the game. Melikyan is also partners along with James Shenouda (Zephyr Racing) with Nitti, so his rst two horses as a partner with Pais were stakes winners.
“Being by Not is Time, a hot stallion, I could have sold Unrivaled Time for quite a bit in Kentucky,” Pais said. “But at this stage of my life, I decided to race him myself instead. I think your gut (feeling) is very important. You put in the hours, and if you have a little common sense, you can get the right outcome.”

HINDGUT ISSUES ARE ALSO IMPORTANT, BUT HARDER TO DIAGNOSE
BY HEATHER SMITH THOMAS
The horse is a grazer with a single, simple stomach. e horse’s stomach is much smaller than that of a cow.
e ruminant stomach has four compartments, including the large rumen that holds a lot of forage to ferment and break down into useable nutrients. A cow can eat a lot of feed at once and fully digest it later, whereas a horse grazes frequently with small amounts going through the digestive tract continually. e brous portions of feeds are broken down by fermentation in the hindgut (cecum and colon).
is makes feeding athletic horses challenging, since they usually can’t be out at pasture 24/7. Even feeding hay entails more sporadic meals than what a horse would consume under natural conditions. In some situations, this unnatural horse-keeping—stall connement and feeding grains—can lead to gastric and hindgut problems and sometimes issues with the small intestine that are often overlooked.
GASTRIC ULCERS
Dr. Frank Andrews, director of equine health and sports performance in veterinary clinical sciences at the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine, has done extensive work with equine ulcers.
“Gastric ulcers most commonly occur in horses involved in intense exercise and being worked ve-to-seven days per week,” Andrews said. “Racehorses are where we see most of the ulcers.”
Scoping a horse plays an important role in diagnosing ulcers
e horse has two kinds of stomach lining tissue and is susceptible to two di erent types of ulcers. e upper third of the stomach lining is non-glandular esophageal tissue.
“Ulcers are common in that area, especially in racehorses working at high speed,” Andrews said. “ ere are several risk factors associated with these ulcers, including exercising more than ve days a week, stress, and a high-energy diet.
“ e ulcers that occur in the tender esophageal portion of the stomach are likely caused by stomach acids that reux from the lower part of the stomach—similar to gastroesophageal re ux (heartburn) in people. Ulcers in the upper stomach are common and heal fast with treatment.
“However, we now recognize ulcers in the lower, glandular part of the stomach. With the advent of longer gastroscopes to explore the glandular portion of the stomach, these ulcers are more common that we thought.
“In humans, most glandular ulcers are caused by a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori. But this has never been associated with equine ulcers when doing diagnostic testing on biopsies taken from horse stomachs.”
It is not known what causes glandular ulcers in a horse.
“One study showed that horses with glandular ulcers had high cortisol levels—the hormone produced during stress,” Andrews said. “We don’t always know what causes stress in the horse; it might be trailering, con nement in individual stalls, no access to pasture, etc.”
Feeding bu ering compounds is helpful in neutralizing acid and preventing ulcers. Acid production is continuous in the horse’s stomach, whether there is feed present in the stomach or not.
Horses evolved grazing more or less continuously and always had feed in the stomach, so there is continuous acid production to digest it. is di ers from a human stomach, which only produces acid when eating because humans only eat a few meals per day. When people are sleeping, resting, or doing something
... and one exhibiting ulcers
besides eating, the stomach is not producing acid.
“Even a horse with an empty stomach is still producing acid, and this can cause ulcers,” Andrews said. “In the glandular part of the stomach, in addition to acids, there are protective mechanisms like a bicarbonate layer and a thick mucus layer that protects the glandular tissue from the e ects of acid. Good blood ow and prostaglandins also help with that mucus and bicarbonate layer.
“ e classic example for ulcers would be high doses of NSAIDs that knock out the prostaglandins, which could result in damage to those tissues, since the protective mechanisms are blocked. We think stress can block protective mechanisms in the glandular tissue. Even with proper treatment of ulcers and feeding bu ering compounds, there are still some horses that have to be on long-term treatment with Gastrogard or other antiulcer medications.”
HINDGUT ISSUES
“One of the problems that can occur in this part of the digestive tract is hindgut acidosis,” Andrews said. “Each region of the digestive tract has a di erent pH. e pH scale is zero to 14, with seven being neutral. Acids have a pH less than seven, while bases (alkaline substances) have a pH greater than seven.
“For digestive purposes, the stomach should be full of food and uid, with an acid pH for proper digestion. It also needs pepsin so proteins can be digested and the feed can be somewhat digested with acid. en the partially digested feed material goes into the small intestine for absorption.
“In the stomach, normally the pH is between one and three, so it is highly acidic. As food goes into the duodenum—the rst part of the small intestine—the pH goes up to about eight, so it is mostly alkaline. is helps with absorption of all those nutrients.”
Horses have some absorption of sugars, proteins, and fats in the small intestine. eir pancreas produces digestive enzymes that break down food and hormones like insulin that regulate blood sugar. Bile is produced by the liver to help break down fats. Horses are generally not on a high-fat diet, since there is not much fat in forages, unless they are given a feed that contains fat.
“When you start feeding a lot of carbohydrates—concentrates and grains— to an athletic horse that needs more energy, you need to realize a horse is not very well adapted to eating grains,” Andrews said. “For absorption of glucose into the bloodstream from the small intestine means the horse must adapt to a high-grain diet by upregulating glucose-transporter proteins to get the sugar into the blood.”
If you make a change in a horse’s diet, it’s best to do it gradually over several weeks.
“Otherwise, without adaptation to increase sugar absorption, it is a bit like grain overload,” Andrews said. “When you start feeding grain, it can also act as an overload to some degree, as sug-

ar escapes being absorbed by the small intestine and works its way to the large intestine.
“When sugar goes into the large intestine, it changes the colonic pH. e pH of the large intestine (colon) should be neutral, which allows the good bacteria—which are mostly gram negative—to ferment the poorly digestible hay and low-quality forage to produce short-chain fatty acids, acetic, butyric, and propionic acids, which are absorbed to generate energy.”
If grain gets back there, it is also fermented, but there is an overgrowth of “bad” bacteria (gram-positive bacteria) that produce lactic acid, leading to a drop in colonic pH (colonic acidosis). When the pH drops, there is more gas production and in ammation of the lining of the colon, which might produce more gas and atulent colic or even laminitis in some cases, if it is severe enough.
“ e pH should be neutral,” Andrews said. “As feed moves through most of the large intestine, these microbes work on it. If the pH stays neutral, those bacteria do very well to absorb the volatile fatty acids and generate energy. e horse is a hindgut fermenter, and this is where most of the energy from food comes from—not from glucose absorption in the small intestine.”
With too much grain and too much sugar that goes into the large intestine, the microbiome with the gram-negative bacteria changes.
“Rather than the bacteria being helpful for generation of volatile fatty acids, there is now more growth of the bacteria that produce lactic acid,” Andrews said.
Gastric ulcers are probably more common, but we may think this because they are more readily diagnosed. We don’t have a way to scope 40 to 50 feet of colon.”
— Dr. Frank Andrews
“ ey ferment to lactic acid instead.
“ is drops the pH from neutral to maybe six or ve. In a horse with grain overload, it may drop to four or ve, which can lead to in ammation of the lining of the large intestine. When that happens, we see absorptions of endotoxins, and when these get to the feet, the horse develops laminitis.
“With hindgut acidosis, however, we’re talking about small decreases in pH that might simply lead to more gas production. e horse is atulent and passing gas. is may mean the pH is dropping and bacteria are producing more lactic acid and gas.”
In this situation, there may also be distention of the large intestine with gas and maybe colic associated with hindgut acidosis.
“It could also happen with lush green grass in the early spring, in horses that get ‘grass founder’ because of high sugar content in the grass,” said Andrews.
“ ese horses become atulent as well.
“If you are feeding at that energy level, where the pH is dropping a little, this could produce the ‘bad’ bacteria—the gram-positive bacteria that are fermenting and creating lactic acid. is may cause the horse to not feel well and might cause colic or intermittent gas colic. is is like a low-grade overload situation, and often people don’t recognize it as such.
“We recommend looking at fecal pH, having your vet measure the pH of the manure. is can be done in the clinic with a pH meter. e pH should be about neutral (6.8-7.5) in those fecal balls. We recommend this test for horses that tend to have chronic colic or a lot of gas colic, and we need to look at the grain feeding in those horses.”
If there is too much grain, too much drop in pH, the horse may develop colitis
“When there is a lot of lactic acid production, the horse ends up with in ammation,” Andrews said. “One region of the colon—the right dorsal colon—is very susceptible because it has lower concentrations of prostaglandin and less protection. is seems to be a focal point for in ammation and colonic ulcers.”
us, it is important to limit the grain or feed low-starch grains. Otherwise, the horse may have problems, though they may not be severe.
“You may just wonder why the horse has frequent mild colic episodes,” Andrews said. “You walk the horse, give some Banamine, and he is ne, but the problem keeps recurring.”
Another thing that may predispose a horse to hindgut problems is overuse of

Gastric and hindgut issues di er.
“Gastric ulcers can be severe and yet clinical signs may be mild; the horse may be ‘girthy’ and sensitive about being saddled and cinched up,” Andrews said. “ ere may be change in behavior.
e horse used to be easy to handle and cooperative and now is grumpy.
“We don’t see much change in the bloodwork if we do a blood test. We don’t see anemia—not much change in red blood cell count—or any protein changes.
“With hindgut issues, however, we frequently see changes in total protein and albumen in the blood. is is due to bleeding in the hindgut, reducing the amount of blood cells. We might see an anemic horse or a horse with a low protein concentration in the blood. is is why we recommend blood work every year, especially for horses in competition, so we can see any changes in bloodcell counts and chemistry values if the horse develops low-level hindgut issues.
“If we start to see a little anemia or low protein levels, it could mean the horse is losing some of that blood and/ or protein through in ammation of the hindgut.”
Clinical signs with hindgut issues include gas colic.
“ e horse is rolling around and you walk the horse, give it Banamine, and it seems to get better and passes a lot of gas,” said Andrews. “ e horse may look at its side and appear uncomfortable, but we don’t see much overt colic signs with gastric ulcers. But with hindgut ulcers we do. Sometimes those horses have swelling and thickening in the walls of the colon, and we can see that with ultrasound. We can also check the manure to see if there is any blood in it.
“Gastric ulcers are probably more common, but we may think this because they are more readily diagnosed. We don’t have a way to scope 40 to 50 feet of colon. With gastric ulcers, the ones in the non-glandular portion of the stomach are common in all breeds. In oroughbreds, only about 23% have lesions in the glandular portion.
“In a current study, we’re nding that horses can have horrible gastric ulcers
and not show any clinical signs. I recently scoped 24 horses at a racetrack in New Orleans for a trainer, and he brought in a stallion that had the worst ulcers I’d seen in a long time. I mentioned it to the handler, and he told me that horse had just won a stakes race the week before. Even horses with terrible ulcers can still function, but it’s good to know they have ulcers so you can plan a treatment or prevention strategy for that horse.”
Horses can have gastric and hindgut issues at the same time.
“If a horse has atulence or mild colic, maybe o feed from time to time, and sometimes intermittent diarrhea, we recommend scoping for gastric ulcers,” Andrews said. “We try to rule out gastric ulcers rst because we can see them. If there are no gastric ulcers when we scope the horse, we look for hindgut ulcers. If there are gastric ulcers, we treat them and see if the hindgut issues clear up or not. You may have to treat both at the same time.
“We can use omeprazole, and sometimes sucralfate or misoprostol to manage them. We also recommend reducing grain in the diet, using more dietaryber, and turning the horses out more to reduce stress.
“If we diagnose hindgut issues and
they are severe, we recommend decreasing the bulk of the diet—feeding a more pelleted diet and not as much dry hay. We may even need to eliminate hay in the diet if the hindgut is severely inamed. You don’t want to increase the load of feed and the irritation. Feeding something like a complete feed or senior feed that includes alfalfa and dietaryber can help. We also recommend corn oil to help increase the energy for horses on the pelleted diet.
“We recommend using sucralfate and Metamucil products like psyllium for hindgut issues. is has been e ective in helping bacteria in the hindgut regenerate and decrease the workload on the colon. Omeprazole (Gastrogard) does not help hindgut ulcers; it is only e ective for gastric ulcers.”
In terms of prevention for gastric ulcers, the recommendations include feeding less grain, making sure the horse has access to feed all the time—enough hay to eat most of the day and maybe pasture turnout in the evening—and reducing stress, such as travel.
Prevention of hindgut issues includes reducing stress and making sure the horse is well hydrated. It’s very important that the horse has access to water and is drinking.
An ultrasound can show things such as edema in the right dorsal colon
