FEW LIVING ARCHITECTS HAVE SHAPED CONTEMPORARY architecture as profoundly as Peter Zumthor. The Pritzker Prize-winning Swiss architect is celebrated for an understated approach that emphasizes craftsmanship, materiality, light, and atmosphere. From Therme Vals to Cologne's Kolumba Museum, his work demonstrates that exceptional architecture is defined by experience rather than spectacle. That philosophy reaches a new expression in LACMA's David Geffen Galleries. Opened in May after years of anticipation, the sculptural, 900-foot-long building glides across Wilshire Boulevard, dissolving the boundaries between museum, city, and landscape while establishing a striking new civic landmark. Elevated nearly 30 feet above street level, the glass-andconcrete structure creates a generous public plaza below and more than 110,000 square feet of flexible gallery space above. Rather than prescribing a route, Zumthor allows visitors to move intuitively through interconnected galleries as changing daylight filters through floor-to-ceiling glazing and custom translucent textile curtains, continually transforming the experience of both art and architecture. The result is a museum where architecture becomes an active participant in the visitor's journey—an elegant demonstration of Zumthor's enduring belief that buildings should inspire curiosity, contemplation, and lasting emotional connection. A New Chapter The Charles and Ray Eames Foundation Expands its Mission Through Preservation, Research, and Public Engagement
AFTER THE 2025 WILDFIRES, the Charles & Ray Eames Foundation is widening its mission — from safeguarding a house to shaping how the world understands two of design's most consequential figures. Building on decades of stewardship by the Eames family and the Eames Office, the nonprofit expands its mission beyond preservation to include education, research, exhibitions and public engagement, ensuring the ideas of Charles and Ray Eames continue to shape architecture, design and creative thinking.

At its center is the Eames House, Case Study House No. 8, completed in Pacific Palisades in 1949 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 2006. Remarkably intact, it offers a rare view into the couple's working life. That survival was tested in January 2025, when wildfires came close enough that the family feared the worst. The house was spared, though smoke damage forced a closure; it reopened in July 2025, and the Foundation is now advancing its Conservation Management Plan with the Getty Conservation Institute. Adrienne Luce, formerly of the Getty Villa, was named inaugural executive director, serving alongside chairman Eames Demetrios on a board that now includes all five Eames grandchildren plus new appointees Eckart Maise and Jackie Cassel. “Eventually everything connects,” Luce says, borrowing Charles's words as the Foundation launches the Eames Fellowship, a 2026 architecture exhibition, and Charles's Norton Lectures in print — broadening how the Charles and Ray Eames legacy is studied.
