Over the past few months, we’ve captured and shared pieces of our journeys – in our communities, on vacations, together and on our own, and all the moments in between…no two journeys look alike. Each of us has our own stops along the way. Some are professional milestones – new roles, new connections, programs launched or challenges overcome. Others are personal – family celebrations, adventures and new experiences and the everyday moments that make our lives special. Every stop matters and every experience shapes us, both personally and professionally. While our individual paths may look different, we are traveling together on one shared path: CPRS.

80 years in… and just getting started! There’s something pretty special about celebrating 80 years. It’s a chance to look back at where we’ve been, appreciate the people who helped get us here…and then turn around and ask one of my favorite questions: What’s next? Around CPRS HQ these days, there’s a whole lot of “next” happening. We recently welcomed David Kert as CPRS’ first Advocacy & Impact Manager, a brand-new position for our organization. For the first time, we have a staff member dedicated to strengthening our advocacy efforts while helping members better tell the story of the incredible impact parks and recreation makes in communities across California. We’re excited about what David brings to this work—and you can learn more about him in the Spotlight section of this issue of California Parks & Recreation. We’ve also welcomed Kathleen Myers as our new Marketing & Communications Manager. With experience in both the corporate marketing world and, most recently, the nonprofit sector, Kathleen brings a fresh perspective to how CPRS communicates to, with and for our members. You’ll be seeing— and hearing—more from her as we continue looking at how we connect our members with the people, ideas and resources they need. Be sure to read up about her in our Spotlight section as well.
And while we’re welcoming some new faces, we’re celebrating a very familiar one. Our Director of Finance & Operations, Tammy Campos, is celebrating an incredible 30 years with CPRS! Thirty years of keeping our books balanced, our audits clean and, quite frankly, the rest of us on track. CPRS is better because of Tammy’s commitment, knowledge and steady hand, and we’re incredibly lucky to have her. Of course, CPRS itself has a milestone birthday this year: 80 years! And because you only turn 80 once, we’re planning to celebrate accordingly. A Big Birthday Bingo Bash is in the works for CONNECTIONS 2027 in Sacramento— and trust me, this won’t be your grandma’s bingo night. You’ll want to be there! Speaking of CONNECTIONS…have you registered yet? Come for the education, stay for the connections, leave with approximately 47 new ideas, 12 new friends and at least one “why aren’t we doing this?” moment to take home. CONNECTIONS is where our profession comes together, and we’d love to see you here in Sacramento in March! Behind all of these exciting updates is the same framework that continues to guide our work: CARD—Community, Advancement, Resources and Development. It’s helping our Board and staff stay

focused not simply on what CPRS has always done, but on what our members and our profession need from us now—and next. That question was front and center at our recent Leadership Summit, where CPRS leaders were challenged to imagine what this organization should look like three to five years from now. Their ideas were big, thoughtful and sometimes challenging—which is exactly what we need. We’ll continue those conversations in the months ahead because the future of CPRS shouldn’t be created for our members; it should be created with them. Eighty years in, CPRS has a lot to celebrate. We have an incredible Board, a talented and growing HQ team, passionate volunteer leaders and more than 4,000 members doing extraordinary work in communities throughout California. And through it all, your CPRS HQ team remains what we’ve always hoped to be: your #1 resource for ideas, connections, answers, opportunities—and occasionally, someone who can help you figure out who to call when you don’t even know what question to ask. Showcase the People and Work Making an Impact
CPRS Professional Members: Get Your Article Published in California Parks & Recreation Here are three ways to submit content for the magazine:
Every park and recreation agency has people and teams who make a lasting impact. Whether it’s an employee who consistently goes above and beyond, a team that accomplished something extraordinary, a new facility your agency recently opened, or a product that has improved your workflow, share your story with your peers.
1. Submit a feature article of up to 500 words, along with three to five high-resolution photos, if available. 2. Submit a CPRS Spotlights brief (up to 225 words, including headline) along with one or two high-resolution photos. Spotlights highlight agency and professional accomplishments and milestones, such as new hires, staff retirements, awards and facility openings.
We welcome articles from professional agency members that relate to a specific issue’s theme or another topic relevant to California’s parks and recreation profession. If you have an article idea, email it to Kathleen Myers at kathleen@cprs.org.
3. Suggest a topic you would like to see featured in an upcoming issue, and we will write the article if it fits an issue. Article ideas should be submitted at least 30 days before the issue deadline.

Viola Roma has been instrumental in the continued growth and popularity of our senior programs. Through her dedication and creativity, she plans engaging activities, excursions, and social gatherings that bring our senior community together. Viola’s genuine compassion and unwavering commitment shine through in everything she does. She takes the time to get to know each participant, creating a welcoming environment where everyone feels included. The appreciation expressed by our seniors is a testament to the care, effort, and heart she pours into her program. Her passion for serving others has made a lasting impact on countless lives, and the City of Artesia is fortunate to have such a devoted member of our Parks and Recreation team.
Ariel Arguello has played a key role in expanding and strengthening the City of Artesia’s youth sports programs. As the Recreation Coordinator responsible for sports programming, he oversees every aspect of the City’s basketball, flag football, and baseball/softball leagues, ensuring each season runs smoothly from start to finish. From coordinating registrations and creating game schedules to managing league logistics and working with coaches, officials, and families, Ariel’s organization and attention to detail make these programs a success. His dedication has helped bring more opportunities for youth and families to stay active, build friendships, and develop teamwork through sports. Ariel takes great pride in providing a positive experience for every participant, and his commitment has made Artesia’s sports programs a valued part of the community.

She brings a calm, solutionsoriented approach to every challenge and is highly respected for her reliability, attention to detail, and ability to build strong working relationships across divisions and with community partners. Over the last fiscal year, the program was fully redesigned to include new health and fitness classes, juicing and healthy cooking workshops, monthly excursions, specialty art classes, and themed events—offered on an alternating schedule to ensure consistent engagement. Through partnerships, donations, and a written grant, the program has grown into a true family of staff and participants. Competitive chair volleyball teams now thrive, and daily attendance has tripled, with new members joining every week. Staff even cooked a full Thanksgiving dinner for 50 seniors, with all food donated. The 50+ Program embodies equity, wellness, creativity, and the heart of Parks and Recreation.

This year, Rosie earned her Swim Angelfish certification, opening our swim lessons to children of all abilities. Her dedication shone when she went above and beyond for a visually impaired student by preparing the child’s advancement report in braille so they could read their own achievements. Regularly praised for her connection with youth of all ages, Rosie keeps community at the heart of everything she does.

Through his leadership and innovation with the City of Corona, he has expanded recreation opportunities by increasing camp offerings, adding sports classes, and maximizing limited facility space to meet community needs. Jason has tripled participation in adaptive recreation programs over the past two years by enhancing activities, creating new events, and providing meaningful experiences for individuals of all abilities. He also created and continues to oversee the City’s Lunar New Year Celebration, growing both attendance and vendor participation each year. A dedicated mentor, Jason encourages staff development through CPRS,

City of Cupertino HERO: Mariah Greene, Recreation Coordinator SUBMITTED BY: Carolyn McDowell, Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation Mariah is a City of Cupertino CPRS Hero! As a Recreation Coordinator, Mariah puts her heart into every program which includes all preschool and youth camps, programs, and events as well as several contract camps and classes. Despite competition from free Pre K programs, Mariah’s leadership keeps preschool thriving with quality instruction and meaningful family experiences. She is a creative force when it comes to events. She crafted a new youth event, Sweetheart Social, she turned Monster Mash from a small preschool program event into a must-go fall community event, and she carries on the long-standing traditional event, Breakfast with Santa. As a mom of three, Mariah trains camp staff with the same patience she gives her own kids, creating a warm, supportive environment for every participant. Even though Mariah always has many balls in the air, she is always willing to find time to step in and support others.

Despite having no aquatics background when he stepped into the role of Aquatics Coordinator, he immersed himself in the field, spending his own time training in the pool and preparing for certification. Within three months, he earned both his Lifeguard Certification and Lifeguard Instructor Certification. A true jack of all trades, Jason draws on his Facility Attendant experience to support AV operations, troubleshoot technical issues, and complete facility repairs. Staff consistently rely on his problem solving skills and calm, capable presence. What truly distinguishes Jason is his willingness to help. Whether assisting with special events, supporting Senior Center programs, or stepping in wherever extra hands are needed, he brings enthusiasm, teamwork, and a positive attitude. During the Castle Park Revitalization Project, Chris played a critical role from start to finish, ensuring the successful transformation of one of Folsom’s most cherished community spaces. Prior to construction, he coordinated extensive site preparation efforts with contractors, helping lay the foundation for the ambitious communitybuilt playground. During the intensive community build, Chris worked tirelessly alongside volunteers, organizers, and contractors to keep the project moving forward despite challenging conditions. Following the build, he oversaw a specialized team of skilled volunteers and contractors to complete the playground and ensure the highest quality final product. In addition, Chris led the restoration of park landscaping, trees, and turf areas that experienced significant impacts during construction. His dedication, leadership, and commitment to excellence were instrumental in delivering a revitalized Castle Park that will serve Folsom families for generations to come.
City of Hermosa Beach HERO: Kalyn Kaemerle, Lead Special Events and Filming Coordinator SUBMITTED BY: Kambria Vint, Recreation Coordinator I would like to nominate Kalyn Kaemerle for her exceptional work leading the City’s recent Special Events Policy and Municipal Code updates through the City Council approval process. As a Recreation Coordinator, Kalyn took on a project typically handled at a much higher organizational level, demonstrating outstanding professionalism, expertise, and leadership. Kalyn conducted extensive research, coordinated with multiple departments, prepared comprehensive staff reports, and confidently presented complex policy recommendations before City Council. Her presentations were clear, well-organized, and instrumental in securing support for significant updates that will improve the City’s special event permitting

City of Kerman HERO: Shannon Barrett, Healthy Communities Recreation Coordinator, Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department SUBMITTED BY: Theresa Johnson, CPRP Community Services Director, City of Kerman Shannon has been with the City of Kerman for 3 ½ years, and in that time, she expanded the Kerman Farmers Market and received the 2024 Outstanding Program Award for her efforts. To expand access to the market, Shannon completed the process to receive EBT and WIC. Earlier this year, she completed the requirements to become a certified farmers market, further expanding opportunities to grow the market. As the Healthy Communities Recreation Coordinator, Shannon also oversees and implements ParkRX programs, Art in the Park, Tai Chi, Walk with Ease, Water Aerobics, and the annual Kerman Almond Festival that includes a 5K run/ walk. Through these programs and events, she engages with the community and takes the time to foster relationships with community partners and other city departments. She is a “Park and Rec Hero” to everyone, the residents of Kerman and the City of Kerman.

City of LONG BEACH HERO: Heidi Mazas, Recreation Superintendent, City of Long Beach SUBMITTED BY: Dana Clark, Community Services Supervisor, City of Long Beach Heidi Mazas is a true Parks and Recreation Hero whose unwavering dedication has transformed the lives of older adults in Long Beach and across California. As a leader in CPRS and past president of the Aging Section, Heidi continues to elevate senior services statewide. Emerging from the pandemic, she spearheaded Long Beach’s revitalized Older Americans Month, reintroducing vital programs and services to aging adults. Under her guidance, the city now hosts 12 annual events in the month of May focused on social services, recreation, health, and leisure, resulting in a remarkable 59% increase in participation. Heidi championed a movement that leverages resources, builds partnerships by using community assets, and meets seniors where they are. Her work creates safe, enriching spaces that combat isolation, encourage active living, and connect participants with cultural opportunities and citywide services. Heidi has proudly presented this model statewide, inspiring other agencies to think creatively. She is deeply deserving of recognition as a Parks and Recreation Hero. They go above and beyond to make sure their coordinators feel supported and successful in their roles. They lead every interaction, both internally and externally, with our City values and mission in mind, striving to provide a premier quality of life for our community. Through their leadership, we have seen numbers double in our Youth Commission program, SPOT program for teens in the summer; contract class programming has developed to include a wider span of participants from all ages, our senior programming has been enhanced to where we are seeing close to 100 people daily for lunch services. Over 1,850 facility rentals have been reviewed and processed this year. Canyon Park has offered kids craft in the Canyon, Family Hike and Campouts and education tours throughout this last year that brought over 2,000 participants to these programs alone. This number does not include the daily visitors to the park that come through seven days a week. Thank you to this team for being true superheroes!

For nearly 30 years, Greg has brought unmatched energy, positivity, and enthusiasm to our profession. He is the linchpin of Mountain View’s Recreation Division. Greg has never been above doing whatever it takes to create memorable experiences for the community. He has dressed as Buddy the Elf for our Tree Lighting Celebration, worn a giant flower costume during COVID for a community scavenger hunt, and would probably wear just about anything if it meant making a kid smile. Beyond the costumes, Greg is a trusted leader, mentor, and lifelong recreation professional. He served on the CPRS District 4 Board this year and continues to inspire everyone around him. Simply put, Greg doesn’t just work in parks and recreation—he is parks and recreation.

From giving a toddler their first sports experience, to supporting special events, docking boats at Pinto Lake, or being patient with hundreds of soccer parents, there’s no job he can’t

handle. When the Department has a special assignment, an emergency, or needs peace of mind, Raul can be counted on to get the job done. Mike was instrumental in the Callaghan Park Pickleball Conversion Project, where he and his team installed temporary striping before the renovation. Introduction Innovation, and in particular technological innovation, seems to change faster than professionals in parks and recreation can keep up, and the past decade has been no different. Registration and reservation software, automated lighting and irrigation, self-driving mowers, social media, smartphones, large language models, and artificial intelligence have all changed how agencies operate. Local government isn’t known for moving quickly. Side note, and true story: When I was a recreation coordinator, internet and email access were so restricted that I had to drive from my community center to city hall to use them under the supervision of my supervisor. Eventually, internet access at every workstation became normal. I’m sure employees there kept watching as social media evolved, marketing changed, and registration moved online. They’ll catch up. Eventually. The speed of technological change can keep us so focused on what’s next that we overlook technology that is already useful. One example is augmented reality, or AR. AR overlays digital content onto the real world through a smartphone or tablet, enriching what visitors see and hear with interactive information. The 2016 Pokémon GO phenomenon offered an early proof of concept. The locationbased AR game drove new visitors
to parks and trails, with one study showing players increased physical activity by an average of 1,473 steps per day while playing (Cohen, 2019). Though the craze has mellowed, many players still connect to parks and each other through the game. Beyond games like Pokémon GO, agencies are using AR to blend digital engagement with outdoor recreation. This article looks at how AR can enhance visitor experiences, how agencies are using it, and practical ways to incorporate AR into programs and services.
How AR Enhances Visitor Engagement Unlike passive media, AR asks users to interact with their surroundings. A scene might place a 3D model, animation, video, or audio prompt over a real-world setting, turning an ordinary park visit into an interactive experience. Research suggests AR can support learning and physical activity. Pokémon GO encourages exploration and movement, while AR playground games have been associated with higher heart rates and moderate-to-vigorous activity among children (Cohen, 2019). AR also creates opportunities for place-based storytelling. Visitors can encounter natural, historical, or cultural information exactly where it matters, giving parks some of the interpretive richness of a museum without walls. CivicPlus (2023) similarly identifies self-guided tours, wildlife education,
and interactive public art as promising uses.
Current Applications of AR in Parks Across the field, AR is being used for interpretation, education, and storytelling. California State Parks’ Virtual Adventurer app, developed with TimeLooper, lets visitors point a phone at park landscapes to reveal historical and ecological overlays (Antunes, 2023). At Alberta O. Jones Park in Louisville, visitors can use QR-triggered AR displays to learn about urban ecology and local civil rights history (Mason, 2024). These experiences allow park guests to discover stories at their own pace. AR can also expand access at historic sites. Montgomery Parks’ Oakley Cabin experience uses smartphones to reveal reconstructed interior scenes and artifacts, with audio narration available in multiple languages (Montgomery Parks, 2025). The experience adds interpretation even when the cabin is closed or minimally furnished, illustrating how AR can support education, accessibility, and cultural preservation. Nature exploration and play are another strong fit. Agencies using Agents of Discovery create geotriggered missions that turn walks into scavenger hunts, with visitors finding plants, animals, landmarks, and digital

challenges. Because missions can be downloaded and used offline, the platform works well in parks with spotty service. Playgrounds can also become augmented spaces. They have created fitness trail maps and workout instructions, facility walking tours, outdoor education content such as a natural water-cycle lesson, and AR-enhanced flyers, resumes, and business cards. Students also pilot test their scenes with park and facility visitors and collect feedback about the experience. The point of the assignment is simple: AR creation is no longer limited to programmers or large technology contracts; recreation professionals can build and test useful scenes themselves. Ready-to-use tools still have a place. Pokémon GO can support meet-ups or community events; Agents of Discovery is well suited to educational play; and Seek by iNaturalist can encourage visitors to identify plants and animals. The best tool is the one that fits the agency’s goal, whether that is increasing trail use, interpreting history, supporting outdoor education, or adding something new to a special event.

Recommendations for Incorporating AR in Parks: 1. Start Small with Pilot Projects: Try one trail, facility, program, or event before scaling up. Keep the first scene simple and gather visitor feedback. 2. Use Existing Content and Infrastructure: Add AR to signs, maps, exhibits, or trails you already have. A QR code can launch a short video, 3D object, or animation without rebuilding the entire visitor experience. 3. Ensure Ease of Use: Test the experience on multiple devices. Minimize downloads and instructions; browserbased AR can reduce barriers for first-time users. 4. Prioritize Safety and Access: Design experiences that do not encourage distracted walking or unsafe movement. Provide a non-digital option for visitors who do not have or do not want to use a smartphone. 5. Collaborate and Share Lessons: Talk with agencies already using AR, work with local colleges or vendors, and share what you learn. The field is still evolving, and practical examples from peers may be more useful than waiting for the perfect solution. Even a small agency can begin with content that complements a park’s history, scenery, wildlife, or programs. The goal is not to add technology for technology’s sake, but to augment the visitor’s appreciation of the real place. Start with something useful, keep it easy to access, and see how visitors respond.

Imagining the Future of Parks and Recreation in Mountain View By Kristine Crosby, Assistant Community Services Director, City of Mountain View
After nearly three years of planning, analysis, and community engagement, the City of Mountain View has a new roadmap for its parks and recreation system. In May 2026, the Mountain View City Council officially adopted the City’s Parks and Recreation Strategic Plan, which sets priorities for parks, open spaces, trails, recreation facilities, programs, and services over the next 10 to 15 years. The planning process began in 2023 with an important goal: to create a long-term vision that reflects how Mountain View’s community is changing and how residents want to use their parks and recreation system in the years ahead. While parks and open spaces have long contributed to Mountain View’s quality of life, the City recognized opportunities to improve access, update amenities and recreational offerings, and better serve neighborhoods with more limited access to park resources. Community engagement became a cornerstone of the process. Residents and stakeholders shared their priorities through public meetings, surveys, pop-up events, focus groups, online engagement, and other opportunities. Many of these engagements were translated or interpreted into Spanish, Mandarin, and Russian. In total, the City recorded approximately 3,800 engagements throughout the planning process. Importantly, engagement did not end with the release of the first draft

in November 2025. The City invited further public review and repeatedly refined the plan in response to comments from residents, the Parks and Recreation Commission, and the City Council. Updated drafts were released in January and March 2026, allowing the community to see how their feedback was incorporated before final adoption. The resulting plan sets a vision for a more connected, inclusive, and resilient parks and recreation system. A key priority is improving access to parks and open spaces, particularly in underserved areas. To identify those areas, the City considered
three factors: park acreage per 1,000 residents, access to a park within a 10-minute walk, and reliance on school fields to meet recreational needs. This approach provides a framework for prioritizing future park investments to maximize community benefit. Environmental stewardship also became increasingly prominent as the plan evolved. Mountain View was simultaneously developing its first Biodiversity and Urban Forest Plan, creating an opportunity to intentionally connect the two efforts. The Strategic Plan includes actions to expand tree canopy, establish and

enhance native habitat and pollinator gardens, and integrate biodiversity and natural elements into future park improvements. The Biodiversity and Urban Forest Plan was adopted by the Mountain View City Council in June 2026. The plan also addresses the changing recreational needs of residents. Near-term actions include expanding Learn-to-Swim and Recreation Swim opportunities, enhancing programming for adults and older adults, and implementing additional measures to improve recreation programs and facilities. With the plan now adopted, Mountain View will begin advancing the immediate priorities and foundational actions identified for implementation. The City also intends to create a public dashboard to track progress and to provide an annual report to the Parks and Recreation Commission and the City Council approximately one year after adoption. By pairing long-range planning with extensive community participation and measurable implementation, Mountain View’s Parks and Recreation Strategic Plan provides a framework to ensure that its parks, facilities, programs, and services continue to evolve to meet the community’s needs. The City of Union City is currently updating its Parks and Recreation Master Plan (Master Plan) — its first comprehensive update in more than two decades. The Master Plan sets a vision for the next 15 years, ensuring the City’s parks, facilities, programs,
and services continue to evolve to meet the community’s changing needs. Its development fulfills a goal and strategy identified in the City Council-adopted Fiscal Year 2019– 2025 Strategic Plan. The design and publication of the final Master Plan
document will be completed in early 2027. Since the last plan was adopted in 1999, Union City has grown and transformed, adding new parks, a community center, and expanded recreational opportunities. Union

Union City began developing the Parks and Recreation Master Plan in June 2025. To ensure the Master Plan reflects the needs, priorities, and vision of the community, the City implemented a robust community engagement strategy that guides the planning process from start to finish and intentionally engages diverse segments of the community. Over the past year, more than 1,500 residents have shared their experiences, needs, and priorities through two multilingual community surveys offered in English, Spanish, and Chinese. LEGACY OF RECREATION: Community Spaces That Shaped Us EL DORADO PARK WEST Long Beach, California By: Beatriz (Bea) Barnett
Community-based organizations strengthen our social fabric, well-being, and overall quality of life. My late parents were refugee immigrants from Cuba and community leaders helping newly emigrated exiles assimilate in the 1960s. They established Club Cubano-Americano de Long Beach at El Dorado Park West in 1971. Papi served many years as President, and they organized La Liga CubanaAmericana de Softball where he served as Commissioner and Manager. Weekends were filled with social gatherings at the park’s community room and ball fields. Precious times spent in my youth with my immediate family connecting with other Cuban refugees solidified my passion
for public service, community building, and a great pride for my cultural heritage. We even celebrated Mami’s 70th Birthday in that same community room with great nostalgia in 1995. Public service runs in my family, and many are lifelong educators. Abuela, born in 1894, taught in a oneroom schoolhouse in the heart of Cuba beginning in the 1910s. My first fulltime summer job at 17 was reception and translation at the Long Beach Children’s

Clinic. After graduating from UCLA, my career path included banking, marketing, pioneering online higher education, Hispanic advertising, and local government. I retired from the City of Temecula this year after 21 years. It was an honor to pass the baton to the next generation’s caretakers of our community’s soul. CPRS Spotlights South Gate Appoints Tina De La Rosa as Director of Parks and Recreation The City of South Gate is proud to announce the appointment of Tina De La Rosa as its Director of Parks and Recreation. The City Manager announced her appointment on June 23, 2026, following her service as Interim Director since December 2025. De La Rosa joined the City of South Gate in January 2023 as Deputy Director of Parks and Recreation, bringing nearly 30 years of experience in the parks and recreation profession. Since joining the department, she has focused on strengthening teamwork, fostering a positive organizational culture, and creating a more collaborative approach across all divisions. “During her tenure, I have watched Tina improve our budget processes,
forge new partnerships with Public Works to advance key projects, and creatively expand programming — all while navigating difficult budget constraints. Her leadership reflects both the dedication and the community-centered spirit that define our Parks and Recreation team” said South Gate City Manger Rob Houston. Prior to joining South Gate, De La Rosa dedicated nearly 25 years of service to the City of Commerce, where she gained extensive experience in recreation programming, community engagement, staff development, and organizational leadership. An active leader within the California Park & Recreation Society (CPRS), De La Rosa has served in numerous Recreation Section leadership roles, including Recreation Section President from July 2022 through February 2024. She is also a frequent presenter at CPRS section, district, and regional trainings, helping to develop future leaders in the profession.
“I am truly humbled and grateful for the opportunity to serve as Director of Parks and Recreation,” said De La Rosa. “I look forward to continuing to work alongside an exceptional team of professionals committed to enhancing the quality of life in our community. Together, we will continue to provide outstanding parks, programs, services, and events that enrich the lives of our residents.” De La Rosa holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Leadership and Organizational Management, with a certificate in Human Resources Management, from the University of La Verne and is one course away from completing her Master’s degree in Leadership and Management. CPRS Spotlights Cordova Recreation & Park District names Chase Michelotti as its new Parks & Recreation Director Chase previously served as the District’s Recreation Superintendent and was selected for the position following a highly competitive recruitment process. During his time as Recreation Superintendent, Chase provided strong leadership and guidance for the District’s recreation programming and the Cordova Golf Course. Under his direction, the Recreation Department achieved significant program growth, enhanced operational efficiencies and increased revenue while maintaining a strong commitment to delivering high-quality experiences for the community. In his new role, he will oversee the District’s Recreation, Golf Course and Park Services Departments, helping guide the operation and continued development of
parks, facilities, programs and services throughout the community. “Chase has consistently demonstrated strong leadership and a deep commitment to our community,” shared General Manager Patrick Larkin. “He understands that exceptional parks and recreation services begin with supported and empowered employees. CPRS Spotlights CPRS Welcomes New Staff Members Meet David Kert | Advocacy and Impact Manager Hi, I’m David! I’m incredibly excited to be a part of the CPRS team as the Advocacy & Impact Manager and to support the people and communities behind California’s park and recreation profession. My career has taken me through program management, strategic communications, and impact storytelling, but the common thread has always been people. I love taking something complex, finding the story
or opportunity within it, and helping turn it into something meaningful and actionable. Before joining CPRS, I spent seven years with Physicians for a Healthy California, where I supported statewide programs focused on health care access, workforce development, and community impact. I worked closely on CalMedForce, a major graduate medical education program, and led MedStudentsServe, which supported medical studentled projects serving communities throughout California. That experience taught me a lot about advocacy, partnerships, data, and storytelling, but perhaps most
importantly, it reinforced how powerful it can be when people doing meaningful work are given the tools and platform to tell their story. That is one of the things that excites me most about CPRS. Parks and recreation intersect with so much of what makes communities thrive: health, connection, environmental stewardship, creativity, and simply having places where people can feel like they belong. I’m excited to help connect those stories to advocacy, research, and impact in ways where decisionmakers understand the people behind the work. Continued on page 50…

CPRS Spotlights CPRS Welcomes New Staff Members My approach to work is rooted in compassion and evidence, and I’m naturally curious. I ask a lot of questions, connect dots, and enjoy looking at challenges from different angles. The way I see it, the most interesting ideas sometimes come from places that initially seem completely unrelated. And that curiosity follows me outside of work: I’m an avid gardener with a deep interest in botany, herbalism, and traditional plant knowledge, and I’ve spent years creating my own small apothecary and teaching others about herbs and botanical
preparations. I’m also passionate about fitness, fashion, and design. One of my favorite creative adventures recently took me all the way to LA Fashion Week, where I produced and presented an experimental fashion collection combining streetwear, special effects, and wearable art. It’s experiences like that which continually remind me how much I enjoy bringing an idea to life, and how often saying “yes” to an opportunity creates its own kind of luck and leads somewhere wonderfully unexpected.
Whether I’m developing a strategy, growing something in the garden, designing something unusual, or trying to solve a complicated problem at work, I think the motivation is similar: I genuinely enjoy learning, creating, and helping things grow. More than anything, I’m grateful to be here and excited to get to know the CPRS community. Meet Kathleen Myers | Marketing and Communications Manager Hi CPRS Friends. It’s an honor to join this incredible team and help support the mission of advancing Parks and Recreation Professionals across California. My career has been quite an adventure filled with creativity, community and connection. I have always had a love of capturing moments and translating them into creative storytelling, which led me into the field of marketing. I began in consumer marketing, creating campaigns for beauty and lifestyle brands, including Urban Decay, YSL Beauty, NYX Cosmetics, Bearpaw, and O’Keeffe’s. In 2025, I felt driven to create a career with purpose which led me to transition into the nonprofit space, bringing my expertise to Women’s Audio Mission, where I
managed marketing, social media, events, and fundraising initiatives. Through strategic storytelling and digital engagement, I worked to amplify WAM’s programs, build community, and raise awareness of gender disparities in the recording arts while creating meaningful connections with the people and communities the organization serves. As I dive more into the Parks and Recreation field, one of the things I’m most excited about is learning and sharing the stories of the people behind the magic. In a world where so many of our interactions happen behind screens, accessible community spaces and “third places” where people can gather outside of home and work are more important than ever. Parks, community centers, libraries, pools, recreation programs, and public spaces can become the backdrop for some of life’s most meaningful moments. These spaces help create connection, belonging, and a stronger sense of community,

and I’m excited to help tell the stories of the professionals who make those experiences possible. I’m looking forward to learning from our members, celebrating their work, and finding new ways to share the incredible impact parks and recreation have on communities across California. Outside of CPRS, I love getting creative in just about any medium I can find - from scrapbooking and needlepoint to everything in between! I channel all of these creative outlets into my boutique, Kathleen’s Closet, located inside Bliss Marketplace in Midtown Sacramento. This carries a collection of vintage finds, custom creations and curated treasures. Whether I’m crafting, curating, or celebrating - I love bringing a little bit of whimsy to every occasion. I can’t wait for this next adventure with CPRS and to get to know all of you wonderful folks! n
