President’s Message

Greetings Calhoun Community College students, faculty, staff, community partners and friends.

As we reflect on the past year at Calhoun, I am filled with pride and gratitude for the strides we have made. We set a bold goal to once again reach 10,000 students, and I am thrilled to say that I believe we are well on our way. Our enrollment reached just under 9,200 students for the fall semester, marking significant growth across all of our sites— Decatur-Morgan County, Athens-Limestone County, and Huntsville-Madison County. This achievement is a testament to the resilience and dedication of our wonderful faculty and staff, and most importantly, our students.

In the following pages of this Annual Report, you will read about our record-breaking Economic Impact, which confirms that Calhoun leads the state with more than $802 million in added income, reinforcing our role as a powerhouse for economic growth. You will also read about the exciting expansion of student opportunities, including the opening of a new residence hall at the Alabama Center for the Arts (ACA), in downtown Decatur, as well as the ground breaking for the new Academy for Music and Movement.

We continue to shine on the national stage, with our Advanced Manufacturing team claiming the 2024 Project MFG Clash of Trades National Championship, marking the fourth consecutive year that a Calhoun team has competed at the highest level. Additionally, we made history with the launch of our first-ever Miss Calhoun Community College and Miss Tennessee River’s Teen scholarship competitions, providing new opportunities for students to earn scholarships and represent Calhoun across the region and around the state.

I am extremely proud and blessed to serve as the president of such a fine institution and the supportive communities we serve. The impact of Calhoun Community College extends far beyond our campuses, and this year’s Annual Report highlights just a few of the ways we are leading the way in higher education and workforce development. You haven’t seen anything yet, we will thrive in 2025. Calhoun Community College is truly TRANSFORMING LIVES and SHAPING FUTURES.

GO WARHAWKS!

CALHOUN AND ATHENS STATE STUDENTS MOVE INTO NEW FINE ARTS RESIDENCE HALLS

Calhoun Community College and Athens State University welcomed Fine Arts students for their first official move-in day at the brand-new Alabama Center for the Arts (ACA) residence hall apartments in downtown Decatur. This historic milestone marks the institutions’ commitment to providing accessible education to the community through their ever-growing partnership. According to Kim Parker, Calhoun’s Dean of Fine Arts, the three-story, 43,474-square-foot building features 49 ADA-compliant apartments, which are evenly split between Calhoun and Athens State. A variety of living options are available for students, including 11 studios, 19 one-bedroom, and 19 two-bedroom units, accommodating a total of 68 beds. Each apartment is equipped with modern amenities such as a refrigerator, stove/oven, microwave, dishwasher, washer and dryer, and high-speed internet with Wi-Fi access. The building includes a post office, leasing office, and computer study labs on all three floors. Residents can enjoy common areas throughout the facility, as well as access to a fenced courtyard for outdoor gatherings. Security measures include keyless entry access cards and video surveillance at all exterior entrances and exits. Additionally, a 250-mph-rated storm shelter is located on the first floor for resident safety during inclement weather.

Dr. Jimmy Hodges, President of Calhoun Community College, expressed his enthusiasm about the new residence hall apartments: “This residence hall is a game-changer not only for the ACA from a recruiting standpoint, but most importantly for our students who will occupy these apartments,” he said. “This is a significant step forward in providing a full college experience, as the ACA is within walking distance of the residence halls. Calhoun and Athens State offer elite courses in Fine Arts, and we’ve added top-notch living facilities, which our students have asked for, and we are so grateful to say we have delivered.”

“This upcoming academic year feels different,” commented Parker. “Here at the ACA, we feel like we are finally accomplishing the goals set for this academic facility during its early stages, which was to provide a local Arts School experience for students. I couldn’t be any happier to see all of the faces as they move into their new apartment homes.”

The ACA residence hall apartments are a first-of-its-kind project, a joint effort between Calhoun, Athens State, and Alabama Senator Arthur Orr. It was developed primarily for students seeking art degrees through Calhoun or Athens State at the ACA. Orr envisioned the living space, and the two institutions worked together to turn this vision into a residence hall proposal. Senator Orr submitted the proposal to Governor Ivey in January 2020, and upon review, Governor Ivey approved $15 million in funding through the Public School and College Authority (PSCA) Bond issue, which was established to help fund construction, safety improvements, and technology upgrades to Alabama’s public schools.

CALHOUN WARHAWKS ADVANCE TO NATIONAL PROJECT

MFG CHAMPIONSHIP FOR THE FIFTH YEAR IN A ROW!

Calhoun Community College saw its three-member advanced manufacturing team secure a spot as one of the final four teams to compete at the 2024 Project MFG National Competition, making this their fourth consecutive year advancing to nationals. According to Tad Montgomery, Calhoun’s Machine Tool Technology Instructor and Project MFG Team sponsor/ CNC Machining SME, all teams in the competition receive challenges where they create a product to required specifications as the competition is designed to reflect the real-world of advanced manufacturing. The teams go through the production of a final product and ensure it’s completed under the time given and to specifications provided.

Last October, 82 teams from across the nation participated in the competition series in hopes of advancing to the regional round. Projects were submitted and judged this past January, and those top qualifiers competed over a span of two days at several regional sites this past February. Emerging as the top four teams from that competition was Calhoun Community College, Central Alabama Community College, Everett Community College - Washington state, and Autry Technology Center – Oklahoma. These four teams were invited to Charlotte, NC for an intense four-day competition where they faced off live on the hit YouTube reality series, Clash of Trades. At stake is $150,000 in total prizes as well as being named the 2024 Project MFG National Champions. The team consisted of two CNC machinists/programmers and a welder. CALHOUN STUDENT SIMULTANEOUSLY EARNS ASSOCIATE AND BACHELOR’S DEGREES IN NURSING THROUGH UAH PARTNERSHIP

Kehinde Oyediran finished a significant milestone. Among the graduating students who walked across the stage during the college’s commencement ceremony, Oyediran’s journey is particularly inspiring. Not only did he receive his associate’s degree in Nursing from the college, but he also attained his bachelor’s degree in Nursing from The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) through the college’s accelerated dual nursing degree partnership. Reflecting on the difficult decision to take on such a demanding educational journey, Kehinde shared how this transformative experience changed his life.

“Through this program not only have I learned to master my bedside skills training, and the management realm of nursing, but it also helped me gain a deeper understanding of what it truly means to embody the essence of a well-rounded nurse who practices in the real world,” says Oyediran. “The coursework and clinicals were challenging, but I paced myself by relying heavily on lecture notes, practice problems, and additional resources provided by both programs. I have no doubt that this decision was perfect for me and where I saw myself going as a future nurse. Procrastination is something that could be very detrimental to anyone who is in this program as you have to stay on track, or you can quickly fall behind.

“I have no doubt that this decision was perfect for me and where I saw myself going as a future nurse.”
- Kehinde Oyediran

According to Dr. Lynn Hogan, Calhoun’s Nursing Department Head, the partnership, which was announced during the fall of 2020, offers a seamless curriculum that provides students the opportunity to complete their general education courses at Calhoun for its Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), and then continuing on to UAH’s College of Nursing to complete requirements to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), thus obtaining both degrees in only five semesters from both institutions. For Oyediran, scholarships played a pivotal role in helping him achieve his academic aspirations.

“Receiving Calhoun’s 2023-24 Stacey M. Cernadas Scholarship was not only an honor, but it also alleviated the financial burden and allowed me to focus entirely on my studies as it covered the cost of my tuition, fees and books,” he shares. “Dying in the line of duty as a flight nurse, Stacey inspired me even more to carry the torch and dedicate myself to serving those in need, as well paying it forward towards future nurses,” he added.

“My goal is to provide the best care possible as a registered nurse,” he affirms, “and then I plan to further my education to serve communities who have limited access to healthcare.” Oyediran also shared that his twin brother, Taiwo Oyediran, is enrolled in the program and will graduate in six months.

ALABAMA CENTER FOR THE ARTS BREAKS GROUND ON NEW $15M FACILITY TO EXPAND MUSIC AND DANCE OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS

Leaders from Calhoun Community College, Decatur City Schools, and local legislators gathered to break ground on the Alabama Center for the Arts’ (ACA) new Academy for Music and Movement. The state-of-the-art, 14,000-square-foot, two-story facility will provide expanded space for music and dance programs, serving both current and future students.

According to Kim Parker, Dean and Executive Director of the Alabama Center for the Arts, the building will feature a mezzanine with an open exterior terrace for small gatherings. The first floor will include a large dance area with temporary seating for performances, a music chamber room, restrooms, changing rooms, and a lobby. The second floor will house music practice rooms, listening rooms, an additional large dance area, and a multi-purpose room. Construction is expected to take about 14 months, with the facility slated to open in January 2026.

“We’ve outgrown our space with students, and that is a great problem to have,” Parker explained. “Our current facility couldn’t accommodate the growing number of music groups and vocalists we’ve introduced. This new building will solve that, providing six music practice rooms and a large chamber to support group rehearsals, offering much-needed space for our vocalists and instrumentalists to practice.”

The Academy will also house a dance program, which is still in development. The college is working closely with Decatur City Schools and other partners to determine the types of dance that will be offered and to create the program’s curriculum. “Our goal has always been to ensure the Alabama Center for the Arts represents all forms of art to retain and attract students,” said Dr. Jimmy Hodges, President of Calhoun Community College. “Adding dance and new areas of music to our offerings made perfect sense. The ACA continues to evolve into the comprehensive arts facility we envisioned during its inception, and that success is due to the unwavering support of our local legislators, school districts, community partners, and the Alabama Community College System.”

CALHOUN INSTRUCTORS SOLVE ON-CAMPUS GRAVESITE MYSTERY, REVEAL IDENTITY, AND HOST CEREMONY TO UNVEIL NEW HEADSTONE

Calhoun Community College, in partnership with local community leaders and historians, held a ceremony to unveil a new headstone for Private Hiram Matthews, a U.S. Colored Troop soldier who is buried on Calhoun’s campus. This remarkable discovery was made by Calhoun history instructor John Gaines and his colleagues, who regularly organize students to clean up the cemetery on the south end of campus once a semester.

The journey to uncover Private Matthews’ identity began a couple of semesters ago when Gaines and his team were trying to find the cemetery owners to get permission to repair some of the headstones, many of which were fallen over or broken. Their search led them to Reynolds Funeral Home in Decatur, where Reverend Wylheme Ragland identified Matthews as an African American Union soldier and a former pastor of King’s Memorial United Methodist Church in Decatur. This revelation prompted further research into Matthews’ life and contributions.

Private Hiram Matthews was born in Limestone County, Alabama, circa 1846, and was enslaved by the Matthews family. In his quest for freedom, he escaped slavery and enlisted in the Union Army on November 3, 1863, in Nashville, Tennessee. Matthews served with distinction in Company H, 13th United States Colored Infantry (USCI), and participated in the Battle of Nashville. After his honorable discharge, he became a Methodist Episcopal Church minister, preaching in Decatur and other Alabama communities. Matthews passed away on January 12, 1895, and was buried in what is now the Oakland Cemetery on Calhoun’s Decatur campus.

The gravesite, now adorned with a decorative fence and river rock, was funded through private donations to the Calhoun Foundation. Alabama Senator Arthur Orr covered the cost of the granite block beneath the marker, while the Veterans Administration provided the bronze marker. Reverend Wylheme Ragland and his sons donated a bronze medallion recognizing Matthews’ service as a Methodist minister. The unveiling ceremony included a TAPS performance and was attended by Senator Arthur Orr, historian and author Peggy Allen Towns, the Old Town Decatur Historical Research Team, representatives from the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, and other local community leaders.

What started as a teaching role quickly became a lasting mission to guide and inspire future nurses.

Throughout her tenure, Dr. Miller educated students at every level of Calhoun’s nursing program, eventually serving as the lead faculty member for Nursing 221: Advanced Evidence-Based Clinical Reasoning, which is the final semester course that prepares students for their careers as Registered Nurses. In this role, she also acted as the clinical liaison, ensuring students were placed in top-tier healthcare facilities across the region. From Athens to Huntsville, Decatur to Florence, she made it her mission to personally visit students during their clinical rotations, offering guidance, encouragement, and unwavering support.

A Symbol of Excellence: “Ducks in a Row”

Dr. Miller became well-known for championing the phrase “ducks in a row,” a mantra she adopted from a speaker at the retirement reception for Dr. Faye Raines, former Dean of Nursing at The University of Alabama in Huntsville. Inspired by the analogy of a duck gliding smoothly across the water while paddling furiously beneath the surface, Dr. Miller instilled this philosophy in her students, reminding them that while nursing may appear calm on the outside, true success comes from continuous effort, preparation, and resilience beneath the surface.

To reinforce this message, she gifted each of her students a small rubber duck as a reminder of her standard for excellence and their ability to navigate the challenges ahead. Over the years, these ducks became a cherished symbol among Calhoun nursing graduates, with students gifting her duck-themed keychains, figurines, and even bobbleheads.

A Passion for Mentorship

In 2012, Dr. Miller earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from the University of Alabama in Huntsville, where she focused her scholarly project on peer mentorship in nursing education. She firmly believed in the power of experienced students helping their peers succeed, creating a culture of collaboration, growth, and professional excellence. Her impact extended far beyond the classroom. Dr. David Welsh, a 2005 Calhoun nursing graduate and current instructor at the college, credits Dr. Miller for inspiring his career in nursing education: “Deb Miller was always in my corner, pushing me to succeed. After I graduated, she encouraged me to return to Calhoun as a part-time clinical instructor. At the time, I doubted what I had to offer, but Deb insisted that my passion for nursing and my experience, no matter how brief, would be valuable to students. She supported me every step of the way, ultimately leading me to a full-time faculty position and, later, my own doctorate in nursing. Her encouragement shaped my entire career. She is my hero.”

A Lasting Legacy

Dr. Miller recently retired from Calhoun Community College. While we are deeply saddened to share that as of this publication, Dr. Miller passed away, her influence continues to resonate. Deb’s remarkable ability to recognize students’ strengths and guide them into clinical specialties where they would thrive, leaves a lasting impact on the healthcare community. It is impossible to fully measure the impact Dr. Deborah Miller had on Calhoun’s nursing program and the countless students she mentored. Her legacy lives on through the nurses, educators, and healthcare professionals she trained, inspired, and supported over the past 25 years.

To honor the legacy that Dr. Miller embodied, the Miller family has established an endowed scholarship through the Calhoun Community College Foundation, which will ensure that her commitment to advancing nursing education will inspire and benefit future generations.

CALHOUN AND ATHENS STATE SIGN NEW LEARNING ASSESSMENT MOU TO ENHANCE EDUCATIONAL PATHWAYS

Calhoun Community College and Athens State University signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to facilitate educational opportunities and streamline credit transfers for students between the two institutions. This agreement focuses on recognizing and applying credits from prior learning assessments (PLA) at Calhoun towards bachelor’s degree programs at Athens State. Dr. Jimmy Hodges, President of Calhoun Community College, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “This agreement is a significant step forward in supporting our students’ educational journeys. By collaborating with Athens State University, we are ensuring that our students can maximize their prior learning and achieve their academic goals more efficiently. We are proud to work together to provide such valuable opportunities for our community.”

The agreement outlines that students must meet the following criteria to transfer credits to Athens State University:

• A minimum of 36 earned transferable semester hours from institutions accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

• A minimum cumulative transfer GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale.

• At least 15 hours applicable to general education requirements

• Eligibility to return to previously attended colleges or universities.

Additionally, students can apply up to 64 semester hours of nontraditional/non-graded college credit towards a bachelor’s degree.

CALHOUN RECEIVES $100,000 DONATION FROM GE AEROSPACE FOR WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

Calhoun Community College partnered with GE Aerospace and their $2.3 million investment to support workforce development across the United States. As part of this effort, Calhoun Community College’s Process Technology Program received $100,000 to fund lab equipment, simulator licenses, and training resources. These contributions will directly benefit Calhoun students, equipping them with the skills needed to excel in advanced manufacturing and chemical processing careers.

“We are deeply grateful to the GE Aerospace Foundation for this generous grant,” said Calhoun Community College President, Dr. Jimmy Hodges. “This investment will ensure that our students are learning with cutting-edge technology and resources, preparing them for the demands of an ever-evolving industry.”

“By supporting our students in this program, GE Aerospace is not only helping to shape the future workforce but also contributing to the growth and success of the broader community. This partnership demonstrates the power of collaboration between education and industry, and we are excited about the opportunities it will bring for our students,” said John Holley, Calhoun Dean of Technologies.

“The funds will directly support the purchase of essential lab equipment, and training materials, all of which are vital to delivering a high-caliber educational experience for our students. With these tools, our students will gain hands-on training in chemical process technology,” said Calhoun Process Technology Instructor, Dr. Kim Roberts.

CALHOUN COMMUNITY COLLEGE RECEIVES $100K FROM TVA AND HUNTSVILLE UTILITIES FOR CONTINUED WORKFORCE PARTNERSHIP

Calhoun Community College received confirmation from Huntsville Utilities and TVA that they will continue to work together in partnership to address the region’s lineworker shortage by each presenting $50,000 checks to the college for its Pre-Apprentice Lineworker Program. The partnership was created to address the growth in the Huntsville-Madison County population, which led to a demand for services resulting in an increased need for utility lineworkers. The 7-week accelerated program is designed to provide individuals with the necessary skills and qualifications desired by utility companies and contractors in the North Central Alabama region.

The $100,000 in scholarship funding will train and educate future utility lineworkers on Calhoun’s lineworker yard across from its Decatur campus. Not only will the scholarships cover the applicant’s tuition, but it will also provide roundtrip transportation services to the class training, a daily gift card for lunch, free mentorship and a bag equipped with basic lineworker tools upon graduation. “If this opportunity were to have a price tag on it, it would total over $10k,” says Dr. Jimmy Hodges, Calhoun President. “Words cannot express how grateful and humbled we feel here at Calhoun to be entrusted by TVA and Huntsville Utilities to play a vital role in training the next generation of lineworkers. I can’t begin to say how life-changing this opportunity is for anyone entering this program, as the training virtually guarantees a job, given the high demand for lineworkers in this region,” added Hodges. With more than 16,000 miles of power lines spanning seven states and approximately 263,000 miles managed by 153 local power companies, TVA continues to seek skilled workers to meet growing industry needs.

CALHOUN’S CRIMINAL JUSTICE DEPARTMENT AND US

COAST

GUARD AUXILIARY UNIT AWARDED $40,000 GRANT FOR NEW SAFETY VESSEL

Calhoun Community College’s Criminal Justice (CRJ) Department, in partnership with the local unit of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, has been awarded a $40,000 grant from Alabama’s Mountains, Rivers & Valleys RC&D (AMRV RCD). This funding will support the purchase and deployment of a new safety vessel boat to serve the Decatur, Morgan, Limestone, and Madison County areas. The boat will play a crucial role in water and underwater evidence recovery, safety patrols, search and rescue missions, and student training in recreational boating safety. It will also act as a force multiplier, enhancing the region’s already limited police, fire, and rescue vessels.

“This vessel represents an incredible asset to our community, not only in ensuring public safety but also in providing our students with hands-on training in essential areas like boating safety, evidence recovery, and search and rescue operations,” said Criminal Justice Instructor, CRJ Program Coordinator and US Coast Guard Auxiliary Detachment Commander, Jim Stewart. The vessel will promote recreational boating safety while supporting the mission of the US Coast Guard locally. Calhoun students will receive valuable training in public service and rescue operations, contributing to the safety and well-being of the community.
