General Information
General Information We firmly believe that boys with good character, an appetite for learning and a passion for a wide range of interests will be the boys who make a positive difference to our world. Such boys will lead a life of significance, they will be grounded, kind, confident and know how to work hard in an effort to be the best version of themselves. The Hitchin Scholarship is operating under the goal of finding new boys currently in Year 6, who would join Caldicott in Year 7 with strong academic potential and who are ‘all-rounders’. Between 1904 and 1938, Caldicott was based in the market town of Hitchin, Hertfordshire. The Hitchin Scholarship is aiming to support boys that capture our founder’s ambition of enabling every boy to shine their light on the world. To qualify for the scholarship, the pupil will need strong academic potential in Maths and English and excellence in at least one of the following optional areas: • • • •
Sport (a ‘core sport’ of rugby, cricket or football) Music Art Drama
For external candidates, the value of a Hitchin Scholarship is £1000 per year in both Year 7 and Year 8. Means-tested bursaries can supplement the scholarship, with a limited number of fullyfunded places where there is proven financial need. The Hitchin Scholarship is only the beginning: we have a range of Senior Schools that would be interested in maintaining the same level of support up to 18 years of age.

By Monday 13 November 2023 Complete and submit the application form via this link... A personal portfolio of achievements should also be submitted by email or post to the Headmaster. Showing more creativity than a professional CV, this portfolio should include the candidate’s interests, evidence of achievements, and preferred optional area/s.

Wednesday 15 November 2023 Parents will be informed whether their son has been invited for an Assessment Day.

Tuesday 21 November 2023 Candidates will attend an all-rounder immersion day where they will participate in Sport, Music, Art and Drama workshops – with the opportunity to demonstrate their talent within their preferred field. Candidates will also sit an academic assessment in Maths and English, although this will be an informal assessment, rather than a timed exam; candidates are actively encouraged to ask questions.

Tuesday 28 November 2023 Candidates will be informed whether they have reached the next stage of the assessment - the ISEB pre-tests exams. These are online, multiple-choice tests in English, Maths, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. Many independent senior schools use the ISEB pre-tests to assess candidates for entry, and this will give us meaningful data when identifying 13+ pathways.

Saturday 2 December 2023 Candidates will sit the ISEB pre-tests exams at Caldicott.

Friday 8 December 2023 Candidates will be advised on the success of their application.
Additional Information
Additional Information Candidates will be expected to be academically able and consistently perform at a high level in the classroom. Current pupils also have the opportunity to be recognised if they meet the criteria. During Prize Giving, at the end of the Summer Term of Year 6, honorary Hitchin Scholarships can be awarded, with performance measured through exam results, evidence of intellectual curiosity and wider contributions to life at Caldicott. Parents of candidates selected for the Assessment Day will be asked by the Headmaster to share relevant reports and documentation from their current school, including their son’s latest school report, and completion of an internal Caldicott New Boy Report. There is the potential for up to five Hitchin scholars each academic year and when a Hitchin Scholar leaves Caldicott after Year 8, his name will be recorded on the Honours Board along with his Senior School destination.
