Publisher’s Letter Continuity in a time of transition I’m once again pleased to introduce this content-rich issue of CalAPA’s “California Asphalt” magazine. This edition is our annual equipment issue, and it highlights the wondrous machines and technologies that are daily reminders of our industry’s commitment to be on the cutting edge of innovation. This will be my last magazine commentary as chairman of CalAPA. I am grateful to my colleagues for recommending me for this position, and I appreciate that my bosses at Ergon Asphalt & Emulsion recognized this volunteer leadership role would help elevate our industry and also be a rewarding experience for me personally. Having served on the CalAPA Board of Directors as a board member, officer and ultimately chairman gave me keen insight into the laser-focused strategy of CalAPA to contribute to the success of all companies in the asphalt industry with effective advocacy, technical expertise and training, meaningful partnerships and building a sense of community. We also have changed lives for the better. The work of the Women of Asphalt California Branch and our newly created California Asphalt Research & Education (CARE) Foundation, focusing on the next generation of workers in our industry, being just two inspiring examples. Continuity in a time of transition relies on consistency of focus, messaging and purpose. It is, in a way, like liquid asphalt binder, holding everything together. Our association has excelled in that regard, building a strong brand that is known far and wide as being credible and effective. In fact, the CalAPA brand, built up over more than 70 years, is by far our most valuable asset. While passing the gavel at an elegant venue like the Jonathan Club makes for a nice photo and pleasant memories, it is also a reminder that our association is all about people – the ones who came before us, who built something important and lasting, and building on that legacy as we prepare to hand it off to the next generation of leaders. Our consistency of mission, focus and strategy, developed by members for members, is what will ensure our collective success for generations to come. Once again I’ll issue this challenge to you: If you’re not a member of CalAPA, I encourage you to join. If you are a member, I encourage you to be engaged so that you receive the full value of your membership. Our leadership transition is further evidence that we are always moving forward in service of our industry, our customers and our communities. That’s a legacy we can all be proud of.

Today’s advanced asphalt plants are all about efficiency, sustainability, and high-performance mixes.

he workday on a California paving project often begins not at the jobsite, but at the asphalt plant, the starting point of what many contractors now call the modern “asphalt train.” This integrated chain of production, hauling, paving, and compaction has evolved into a highly coordinated system driven by technology, data, and increasingly strict environmental requirements. At the plant, manufacturers such as Astec, Gencor, and ADM have transformed mix production with improved drying efficiency, advanced burners, tighter temperature control, and automation platforms like Astec’s TCII and ALmix Insignia. These systems give operators real-time insight into moisture, fuel use, and mix quality, helping ensure a steady, predictable flow of asphalt to the jobsite. Environmental responsibility is now a fundamental part of plant operations in California. In many cases, these technologies have become standard equipment for plants seeking cleaner, more sustainable operation. Once the mix leaves the plant, the next link in the asphalt train depends on timing, temperature, and logistics. GPS-based dispatch systems such as Libra and Fleetwatcher keep trucks evenly spaced, reducing the stop-andstart material flow that once created cold spots and segregation. Insulated truck bodies from Beau-Roc and J&J help maintain temperatures, while tarp systems from Aero and Shur-Co minimize heat loss. Some fleets use wireless

temperature sensors like MOBA Pave-IR to monitor material temperature throughout transport, giving foremen the confidence to adjust operations before issues become costly. At the paving site, material transfer vehicles set the tone for quality. Machines like the Roadtec Shuttle Buggy SB-3000 and Weiler E2850 remix the material and create a continuous, non-contact buffer between trucks and the paver. This steady flow enables the paver to run at consistent speeds, one of the most important contributors to long-term ride quality and density. Pavers themselves have made significant strides. Telematics systems like ActiveCare, and VisionLink track paver utilization, fuel efficiency, and machine health, allowing managers to maintain high uptime and predictable production. Not all work takes place on new pavement. Road maintenance and pavement repair remain essential components of the larger asphalt ecosystem, and equipment designed for these tasks supports the overall quality of California’s road network. SoCal JCB has introduced the JCB Pothole Pro to streamline patching operations, combining cutting, cropping, and cleanup into a single machine. This multipurpose approach increases

productivity for agencies and contractors tasked with maintaining heavily traveled streets. Pavement preservation technologies also support the asphalt train by extending service life. VSS International supplies a wide range of slurry seal, micro surfacing, and chip seal solutions, along with the equipment needed to apply them. These treatments address oxidation, surface wear, and minor distress, delaying costly rehabilitation and reducing lifecycle costs. Crack sealing plays a similar preventive role, and Crafco’s melters, sealants, and patching products help contractors address cracks before water intrusion accelerates pavement failure. Immediately behind the paver, the compaction train completes the asphalt placement process. Intelligent compaction has transformed rollers into datadriven quality tools. Thermal profiling systems complement intelligent compaction by identifying temperature differentials that can compromise density. Tools like Wirtgen RoadScan, MOBA Pave-IR, and Cat infrared monitoring help crews stay within the optimal temperature window, improving uniformity and reducing the risk of premature pavement failures related to thermal segregation. Sustainability continues to shape equipment choices across California. Warm-mix technologies from Astec, Ingevity, Arkema, Xydex, and others allow producers to make mix at lower temperatures, reducing energy use and emissions while expanding the compaction window. RAP processing systems from KPI-JCI, Maxam, and CMI Roadbuilding help contractors increase recycled content without compromising performance. New hybrid and low-NOx burners further support the state’s climate goals, making plants cleaner without sacrificing throughput. 10

The industry’s traditional dealer model, built around parts sales, shop repairs, and field service trucks, has expanded dramatically over the past decade. Replacing the older model of service is a modern, hightech, customer-focused support ecosystem driven by mobile diagnostics, remote telematics, predictive maintenance, 24/7 parts access, onsite rebuild programs, loaner fleets, and emerging expertise in electric equipment. These shifts are not just conveniences; they are strategies that are now almost mandatory to compete in today’s equipment distributor environment. California’s asphalt producers and paving contractors operate under some of the most demanding conditions in the nation: tight Caltrans specifications, compressed 12

hen James Nixon talks about Nixon-Egli Equipment Co., he doesn’t describe his role in terms of titles or responsibilities. Instead, he talks about memories, early mornings in the yard, conversations overheard in the parts room, and the rhythm of machines arriving, unloading, and heading back out to jobsites. For him, the business was never something he simply joined, it was the world he grew up in. “I really never knew a version of life where this company wasn’t part of my day-to-day,” James says. “From the time I was little, I was watching equipment come off trucks, listening to customers talk with my dad, and trying to understand the way problems got solved.” Those memories shape his leadership today as the company 18

marks its 60th anniversary and enters a new era with James as Chief Operating Officer. While his approach reflects the realities of a modern dealership, data-driven decisions, telematics support, and expanded technical capabilities, his foundation remains rooted in the values built by the two generations before him. ROOTS IN TWO SALESMEN AND AN 8,000-SQUARE-FOOT SHOP Nixon-Egli Equipment Co. began in 1965 with two men who shared a similar outlook on business and customer service. Jim Nixon and his colleague, Paul Egli, were both working for subsidiaries of American Hoist & Derrick at the time, Jim selling asphalt equipment across the western states, Paul representing the company’s crane

line. Both believed in hard work, follow-through, and telling the truth even when it jeopardized a sale. When Jim was given the opportunity to open a dealership in Northern California, American Hoist requested he partner with Egli to balance inside and outside operations. The result was NixonEgli Equipment Co., headquartered in an 8,000-square-foot facility in Emeryville. The company started with a mix of cranes, trenchers, rollers, asphalt plants, and sweepers and built its early reputation one customer at a time. The founders shared a belief in slow, honest growth, earning trust through action rather than promises. Their approach set the tone for the decades that followed and shaped the company culture that still defines Nixon-Egli today.

A PIVOTAL TURNING POINT: STEVE NIXON STEPS IN In 1978, when founder Jim Nixon passed away, the company found itself at a crossroads. His son, Steve Nixon, had grown up around the dealership, but his life had taken several detours. He served almost two years in Vietnam, spent time traveling, studied history at San Francisco State, and only later returned to the business. His earliest memory of the industry goes back to childhood, sitting on a Ford tractor his father was trying to sell. That moment sparked an interest, but what he inherited years later was not a simple continuation of his father’s work. It was a company facing major challenges. American Hoist & Derrick, the manufacturer that accounted for a large portion of Nixon-Egli’s product offering, began exiting multiple markets. Practically overnight, Steve was left with a slim product portfolio and a need to rebuild. What followed became one of the most important chapters

in the company’s history. Steve diversified the dealership, adding new lines that would shape the next four decades of success, including the Wirtgen Group brands (Wirtgen, Vogele, Hamm, and Kleemann), LeeBoy’s line of asphalt pavers, and Link-Belt cranes. He committed to never again allowing one manufacturer to dominate the business in a way that could threaten its stability. Just as importantly, Steve cultivated a culture of loyalty and long-term commitment. Many employees stayed 20, 30, even 40 years, becoming part of the NixonEgli family in every meaningful sense of the word. A NEW ERA BUILT ON EXPERIENCE By the time Steve’s son, James Nixon, stepped into day-to-day leadership, he had already spent years moving through nearly every position in the company. Parts, service, territory sales, municipal accounts, shipping, and operations, each department provided a different vantage point

and deeper understanding of how a dealership truly functions. “You can’t make good decisions if you don’t understand how every part of the company affects the customer,” James says. “Working in all those roles shaped how I lead today.” His leadership style blends the company’s legacy values with the demands of a changing industry. While he embraces modernization, expanded telematics support, more sophisticated diagnostics, and data-informed planning, his core priorities remain the same ones that guided his grandfather and father: honesty, responsiveness, and unwavering support for the customer. UPTIME AS A MEASURABLE PROMISE One of the clearest markers of James’ influence is the company’s approach to parts and service. James points out that roadbuilding, paving, and milling contractors rely on uptime in ways few industries understand. A paver going down doesn’t just cause delays, it 19

jeopardizes an entire shift of production. A mill breaking down can stall a full operation. With that in mind, James expanded the product support specialist team and doubled down on telematics, allowing Nixon-Egli technicians to diagnose issues earlier and prepare the right solutions before arriving onsite. But the most significant investment has been in parts inventory. Today the company carries six to seven million dollars in parts, including slow-moving items that many dealerships simply won’t stock. “I would rather look at a gearbox on the shelf for nearly a year than have a customer staring at a down machine for even half a day,” James says. “Parts availability is one of the biggest responsibilities we have.”

That philosophy has become a defining competitive advantage for Nixon-Egli, and a major reason so many paving and milling contractors continue purchasing from the dealership generation after generation. STRONG LINES AND STRONGER PARTNERSHIPS From major highway contractors to small paving crews, Nixon-Egli’s customers rely on some of the most proven equipment in the asphalt and roadbuilding markets. The Wirtgen Group brands continue to be core to the dealership’s identity, representing industry-leading technology in milling, paving, compaction, and crushing. James evaluates manufacturers by focusing on long-term reliability and factory support. “If the machines don’t perform and the manufacturer doesn’t support the dealer, we won’t represent them,” he says. “Our customers trust us to make the right decisions about what we put our name behind.” 60 YEARS OF LOYALTY—AND WHAT COMES NEXT If there is one theme that runs through Nixon-Egli’s history, it’s loyalty. Generations of customers have stayed with the company, not because of marketing, but because Nixon-Egli has consistently shown up when they needed help most. Many employees have built their

careers there, contributing to a family-oriented culture rooted in respect and shared purpose. Carl L. Monismith Graduate Fellowship fund seeks donations

arlier this year legendary University of California engineering professor Carl Monismith, a giant in the field of asphalt, passed away at the age of 98. His storied career included the mentoring of 37 doctoral students and dozens of master’s students, and the authorship of 492 influential papers. A pioneer in the development and advancement of asphalt pavement technology and design with more than 60 years of dedicated service to UC Berkeley. He led by example: humble, respectful, and meticulously prepared, teaching us the critical importance of the “test of engineering reasonableness” and the essential link between research and practice. To honor his legacy and ensure UC Berkeley continues to attract world-class talent, a group of Monismith’s colleagues and admirers are working to transform a Carl L. Monismith Legacy Endowment Fund into the Carl L.
