Stage Area

We thank you for refraining from approaching the stage. This area is restricted to graduates. To avoid obstruction of anyone’s view, a team of Institute photographers and videographers will document this celebration. Photos will be available for download and sent to the graduates.

Ceremony

As graduates, families, and friends look forward to this milestone with excitement and anticipation, we ask that you please remain seated until all graduates have been presented and the ceremony has concluded. The celebration will continue throughout the evening with a reception being held indoors in the Main Gallery immediately following the ceremony.

Please refrain from smoking while seated in the Graduation Courtyard.

Accessibility

American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation is available during the Graduation Ceremony. For an assigned seat with a clear view, please contact a volunteer. Barbara Carrasco

The mixed-media artist Barbara Carrasco was born in El Paso, Texas, in 1955 to Mexican American parents and grew up in the predominantly Mexican American and African American community of Mar Vista Gardens, near Culver City, California. She received her associate of arts degree in English from West Los Angeles College before transferring to the University of California, Los Angeles (BFA 1978). She was the first woman editor of the UCLA newspaper La Gente. At age 19 Carrasco met César Chávez, leader of the United Farm Workers of America (UFW), after which she began a long association with the organization. She designed and created flyers and banners for the UFW.

In 1981 Carrasco was commissioned by the Community Redevelopment Agency to create a 16x80-foot portable mural titled LA History: A Mexican Perspective. The mural elicited controversy over the use of images referencing the internment of Japanese and Japanese American people in the western United States during World War II, which Carrasco had decided to include after talking to members of the Little Tokyo community in Los Angeles, who agreed to the use of the images. The mural, which depicted 51 events, was displayed only once, at Union Station in downtown Los Angeles. Another incident that incited controversy around her art transpired with her animation titled Pesticides! (1989) for the Spectacolor light board in Times Square, New York. This computer artwork—a political piece depicting the exposure to toxic pesticides of farm workers and their families— had two scenes that were censored by the president of Spectacolor and that Carrasco replaced with, arguably, two more political images. She also studied at the California Institute of the Arts (MFA 1991).

The death of Chávez in 1993 was particularly devastating for Carrasco, for she considered him not just a friend and a leader but a father figure (Carrasco’s father died of a heart attack when she was 12). Her commitment to the Chicano civil rights movement and its art has not waned. In 1999 she created one of her most iconic prints, Dolores, depicting, in a pop art aesthetic, the formidable activist Dolores Huerta. Carrasco is a founding member and board member of the Dolores Huerta Foundation. Students and scholars of her work can find her original mural sketches and drawings in the Permanent Collection of Works on Paper at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC; her oral history is archived by the Smithsonian Archives of American Art and UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center; and a permanent collection of her papers has been established and archived at Stanford University’s Special Collections.

Drew Barrymore

was born in Culver City, Calif., into a revered acting family that includes, among many others, her grandfather John Barrymore. She started performing in commercials before her first birthday. At age 6, she was chosen by director Steven Spielberg to co-star as Gertie in E.T.: The Extraterrestrial.

In 1995 she created her own production company, Flower Films, with partner Nancy Juvonen. Their first film was the 1999 comedy Never Been Kissed, followed by the box office hit Charlie’s Angels in 2000. Firmly established as a production powerhouse, Flower Films subsequently produced the features 50 First Dates, cult favorite Donnie Darko, Duplex, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, Music and Lyrics, Fever Pitch, He’s Just Not That Into You and Whip It (which she directed and appeared in).

Barrymore won a 2009 Golden Globe Award and Screen Actors Guild Award for her role as fallen heiress Edith Bouvier Beale in the lauded HBO production of Grey Gardens. Additionally, she starred in and executive produced the Netflix original series Santa Clarita Diet for three seasons. Most recently, Barrymore was featured as the center square on CBS’s primetime version of Hollywood Squares, which was the most-viewed new unscripted series of the 2024-2025 season.

In addition to her lengthy entertainment career, Barrymore is also an entrepreneur who created a successful lifestyle brand, Flower by Drew, in 2013 that has grown to include beauty products, a home line, and an eyewear collection. In the fall of 2020, Barrymore launched her nationally syndicated self-titled daytime show serving as host and executive producer.
