Freedom for furry friends TANYA MURPHY

WHEN they were found,

they were helpless and on the brink of starvation but now, Opal the agile wallaby and Patrick the red legged pademelon are bouncing with energy and ready to be released back into the wild. The adorable marsupials were dropped off to Far North Queensland Wildlife Rescue after being orphaned, and nursed back to health by their doting volunteer carer Beau Peberdy. A Kewarra Beach family thought Santa had dropped Opal off by accident after finding her abandoned in their yard which backs onto the bush on Christmas Eve last year.

She was around two months old and with no fur and her eyes and ears still sealed, she was not developed enough to survive on her own, so they called FNQ Wildlife Rescue.

Caring for a wallaby as young as Opal is a big commitment from volunteer carers like MrPeberdy. “She had to be carried everywhere and required feeding every three hours, day and night, and that lasted for several months,” he said. “Now, eight months later, she’s hopping around in my backyard eating grass, lupins, sweet potato, and carrot. I also bring her branches of native shrubs like eucalyptus, grevillia and acacia, to prepare her for her natural diet in the wild.” Patrick was sadly orphaned by a vehicle near Mirriwinni in April, but fortunately, the drivers of the vehicle stopped to check the mother’s pouch and dropped Patrick to FNQ Wildlife Rescue. Patrick and Opal soon became fast friends who love cuddles and naps together. Mr Peberdy said although he was very fond of the mischie-

vous macropods, they were now ready for the gradual release process. Opal and Patrick will initially be released into a large enclosure of natural bush, in South Mission Beach, used by FNQ Wildlife Rescue to prepare the animals for life in the wild, with others of the same size and age. Once they become totally independent, feeding on their own without human interaction, the gate will be opened so they can hop to freedom whenever they are ready. Mr Peberdy said native animals like Opal and Patrick were threatened by habitat loss, with a lot of construction and housing developments underway in the Northern Beaches area of Cairns. Traffic and domestic animals like dogs were also a major threat. “We get over 3500 calls for sick, orphaned and injured animals every year and have more than 150 volunteer car-

ers,” said Mr Peberdy. “Unfortunately, carers are currently reaching into their own pockets to buy the food for the animals. “COVID19 drastically impacted our ability to fundraise so we are looking more than ever to the community to donate kindly so we can continue to help animals like Opal and Patrick.” The next fundraising event will be a trivia night with raffles and great prizes, on Saturday October 31 at Trinity Beach Sports Club, for $10 entry per person. AUSTRALIAN Indigenous fashion is attracting international attention and Far North Queensland-based designers are among those leading the way. Cairns local Indigenous fashion designer Grace Lillian Lee recently launched First Nations Fashion + Design (FNFD) and brought together an esteemed board of directors to create the First Nations Fashion Council, which will be the first industry body of its kind to provide mentoring and support for Indigenous fashion designers across Australia.

them bring their designs into the national and international spotlight, notably founding the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF) fashion performance in 2013, and producing a fashion show at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in 2018. Lee’s efforts have helped catapult Indigenous fashion into the international spotlight with couture connoisseurs Vogue Magazine travelling all the way to Cairns in 2016 to experience the CIAF fashion performance.

A descendant of the Meriam Mer people of the Eastern Islands of the Torres Strait, Ms Lee creates contemporary wearable art inspired by her heritage and culture.

“When people think of Indigenous design they probably think ‘dot paintings’, or a niche subsection within Australian fashion, but Indigenous artists are actually setting contemporary trends which are attracting so much international attention they will soon be considered the definition of Australian fashion,” said Ms Lee.

She has been providing consulting to Indigenous designers and communities for nearly a decade and helping

“Our goal is to have New Yorkers and Parisians wearing Australian designs, instead of Australians follow-

ing international trends, and what better place to draw that uniquely Australian look from than our Indigenous designers? “Until now, there have been a lot of collaborations with non-Indigenous fashion labels showcasing the work, storylines, dreamings and techniques of Indigenous artists - which has been amazing - but FNFD’s goal will be to nurture Indigenous-owned fashion labels. “FNFD is not just about giving a voice to Indigenous fashion and changing the narrative on what people think Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander fashion is - we need to address all the social determinant factors that affect us in our everyday lives. “We want our community to be their own decision makers to share their stories. To aspire to be leaders in their own field within the fashion ecosystem. “We want our communities to see their stories on the front page, and we want

to provide a supportive and healthy environment with culture at the forefront. “We want our creatives to stand together and pave the way for our younger creatives to follow, and that will lead to very exciting economic opportunities for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander fashion industry.” Ms Lee said Australia, and Far North Queensland in particular, had some thriving Indigenous artists cre-

ating beautiful and exciting work, but needing support to build their business and their brand. FNFD membership will be free to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people, with the goal of helping them set up and grow their own independent businesses through events, workshops, mentoring, and connecting them with contacts in the fashion industry. “Many artists live in re-

mote areas and it is that strong connection with their land and heritage that inspires their work, so our fashion school will be “on wheels” and will travel around and help facilitate the amazing work that Indigenous designers are doing in their communities,” Ms Lee said. Cairns teen singing her way to stardom Cultural Award.

WITH stunning vocals delivering a range and skill far beyond her young 16 years, Cairns teenager Abi Muir could be Australia’s next big pop star. The Redlynch State College Year 11 student only started singing and song writing three years ago, but she has already collected online fans and followers from 72 countries around the world, and has been placed on over 3,000 playlists. It all started in 2018 when Abi was inspired to start writing and recording her own songs in her parents’ garage after winning the Cairns Dinner Theatre Singing competition. Her wistful, dreamy debut single “Heebeejeebies” released last year has collected over 150,000 streams, and earlier this year Abi won the 2020 Cairns Regional Council Australia Day Junior

She’s now up to her fourth single, and the official film clip for her new release “First Date,” launched just three weeks ago, already has more than 53,000 views on her Facebook page. The high energy, pumping dance track with subtle teenage sarcasm hidden in the lyrics showcases Abi’s soaring, powerful yet agile vocals reminiscent of Ariana Grande. The film clip was shot and produced with Port Shorts and Hotglue, and features Abi dancing in the Cairns Iconic Woolshed club along with fellow students and talented local performers including “Drag’d Out Late” drag queens, Passaros do Paraiso samba dancers, and Bollywood and hiphop dancers. Behind the voice is a humble young lady who grew up on a tiny island in Scotland, competing in traditional Celtic dancing, but only discov-

ered her passion for singing after moving to Australia five years ago. Abi said her parents were not musical but helped her to develop her singing skills through a local vocal coach, Redlynch Arts Course of Excellence in Music (R.A.C.E.) and regular practice. The talented teen also taught herself to produce her own music and videos on her home computer, and reached out to an independent music producer online for assistance with laying down beats and backing music for her singing. “All my songs are about personal experiences that I go through and feelings that I have. I get inspiration from everything that happens around me, and to me,” Abi said. In 2019, Abi was the only student from Cairns selected as a Featured Vocalist at Creative Generation, Queensland’s largest youth performing arts show at the

While performing to a crowd of more than 2,000 people and on national television would be terrifying for some, Abi feels at home on stage. “Whether it’s to two people or 2,000 - I just feel so happy to sing, it’s magic,” she said. ication. “A lot of people think singing is just a hobby that people do for fun, but in fact if you choose it as a career, with all the production, business and marketing side of things, and also the criticism - it’s a lot of hard work,” she said. It’s bad enough that we lace pizza with those salty fruit of the ocean, the devil’s own spawn, anchovies, but pineapple? It’s a fruit for goodness sake. When printing presses were first developed in the 1500s they initially were used for the printing of bibles. But very quickly books, pamphlets and then newspapers became the standard jobs on these presses. Since the 17th century newspapers have been produced to inform, entertain and empower communities. In the early 2000s some publishers changed their focus and moved away from the core driving life-blood of newspapers. How long has it been since we uttered the century old phrase, “it’s in my LOCAL newspaper.” Throughout regional Australia and within suburbs of our capitals, locals have reached on a weekly or even daily basis for their local newspaper. The paper that informed, entertained and empowered their community. But sadly since the mid - 2000s publishers have moved away and ignored the community, closed the free-weekly papers and passed the baton for production of local news to the internet and social media. We believe that community news and pride can be built using a combination of newspaper, a news and community website and an online edition of the hard copy paper. Cairns Local News represents a small group of people, passionately dedicated and believing in local business and our community. We’re not a national media company, looking at the bank balance and rationalising services to suit balancesheets or shareholders. I grew up in an era of newspaper, and still firmly believe in the power of the local paper. Our publication is free, free to pick up and read, free to read on-line. No paywall. Our advertisers believe in our message, ‘support local and keep it local’. Do’s and don’ts of recycling made simple Recycling can be confusing. Which plastic containers can I recycle? Should I be taking lids off bottles before putting them into the recycling bin? Do I need to rinse out dirty bottles, jars and containers before I place them in the recycling bin? To help residents navigate the “dos and don’ts” when it comes to their recycling bin, Cairns Regional Council have launched a new Recycle Right campaign to help “keep it simple”. The aim of the campaign is to simplify messaging, highlight recent changes and reinforce the need to “recycle right” to reduce non-recyclable contamination.

Cairns Mayor Bob Manning said that disposing of waste correctly was important to ensure that materials that can be recycled did not end up in landfill. “For many years China has been the largest importer of the world’s recycling, largely due to fairly relaxed rules about accepting incorrect items being mixed with recycled goods,” Cr Manning said. “However, the Chinese National Sword Policy has tightened those rules significantly, creating additional challenges for the Australian recycling industry. “It means that if we want to avoid landfill here in the Cairns region and see more

of our waste materials recycled, we need to ensure there is lower contamination, which is where residents can play a vital role.”

• Keep it clean – Rinse or wipe out containers, no food scraps

The aim of the Recycle Right Campaign is to simplify the process for residents by focusing on six key messages:

Last year, about 10 per cent of material that ended up in the recycling bins was contamination, while more than 20 per cent of items, or around 9500 tonnes, that ended up in the waste bin was actually recyclable.

• Keep it simple – only recycle hard plastic bottles, steel and aluminium cans, glass bottles and jars and paper & cardboard • Keep out soft plastics – no plastic bags or wrapping • Keep out small items – nothing smaller than a credit card • Keep it safe – Nothing that can harm workers or damage machines

• Keep it loose – Don’t bag or box recyclables

As part of the new campaign, Council has produced six, 30-second videos, which will air on local television from September 14 until January next year. More information on Recycle Right Cairns or to watch the videos

Have your say in Cairns survey from a social, liveability, economic and cultural perspective. The first Our Cairns survey was conducted in 2016 and attracted 6400 respondents.

CAIRNS locals are being encouraged to have their say on local issues that matter to them in the Cairns Regional Council’s annual “Our Cairns” survey. More than 3500 Our Cairns surveys have been submitted so far, along with over 550 Youth surveys.

There is still plenty of time for people to have their say, as the survey is open until 5pm on Friday October 16. The Our Cairns survey is the biggest survey conducted in this city and is aimed at identifying the needs and desires of the community to guide the future of Cairns

This year, for the first time, council have also developed a special Our Cairns Youth Survey so young people can directly tell council what they need and want in terms of facilities and services. The survey includes general questions about things like liveability, facilities and services, traffic congestion, disaster resilience, the economy, the environment, higher density, arts and culture. It also includes questions on topical issues like:

one-laning of CBD streets; whether Council should start suburban security patrols; whether dogs should be allowed in the CBD; whether cyclists should be banned from CBD footpaths; whether Cairns should host a Schoolies Week; whether people should be allowed to drink alcohol on the Esplanade and other foreshore areas; and questions on Council’s performance in providing the community with services and facilities. Ronnie Holden planting a tree at the Johnstone River Community Gardens

Vale Ronnie Holden FAMILY and friends of the late Veronica ‘Ronnie’ Holden gathered at the Johnstone River Community Gardens (JRCG) recently to pay tribute to her many achievements, planting a commemorative tree and unveiling a plaque in her honour. As a tireless community volunteer who championed the strong linkages between community engagement, the environment and wellbeing, Ronnie was a founding member of the JRCG, planting one of the original trees in the orchard section at the Garden opening on World Environment Day, 2010. Cassowary Coast Regional Council Mayor, Mark Nolan expressed his condolences to the Holden family and noted that her passing is a loss to the entire Cassowary Coast community. “Ronnie was a much loved and admired member of our community who gave herself tirelessly as a volunteer to so many organisations,” said Mayor Nolan who noted in particular Ronnie’s annual CWA Australia Day Breakfast at Flying Fish Point and being honoured as Citizen of the Year in 1998. “Vale Ronnie Holden, a Cassowary Coast Legend.” Ronnie’s tree is now the ninth such memorial tree

planted in the JRCG which is managed by her son, Bernard Holden who is committed to see her spirit live on through this remarkable community project. “Mum was a strong believer in having a sense of community and her approach was through encouragement and empowerment,” said Bernard who is cultivating a new generation of volunteers through the establishment of community gardens across the Cassowary Coast. “She was a true champion, even toward the end when she was having trouble walking mum would always put her hand up to help which was so inspiring to all who had the honour of knowing her.” Surviving Ronnie is her husband Les who expressed his gratitude for the incredible memories of her life which were shared at the wake after her recent passing. Johnstone River Community Gardens is open to the public daily, with group activities on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings and regularly hosts Sunday morning community picnics on the first Sunday of the month. The cars we drive are more economical than their predecessors, yet we still need to save fuel as well as save the environment from the impact of fossil fuels. Drive economically. The key here is to drive smoothly and maintain a steady speed. Fuel is wasted when we brake and then accelerate to return to our original speed. Stay with a constant and steady speed and avoid late braking.

Ensure your car is well maintained and the engine is serviced and tuned. This includes ensuring all filters are in good condition as well as engine oil changed and water level checked in the radiator. A well maintained car offers greater efficiency and will save on running costs over the life of the vehicle

Are your tyres inflated correctly? Drag or friction is created between the road and the tyres. Under inflated tyres create additional friction and cost you money, as well as damaging the tyres and leading to excessive tyre wear. Keep you tyres inflated at a pressure slightly higher than your vehicle handbook recommends. This will improve handling and fuel economy. Walk instead of driving. Perhaps it would be better to park the car and walk instead. Walk to the shops, grab a convenient park, perhaps the first park and walk the extra block instead of circling, waiting for a park to become available. We are all guilty of wanting to park directly outside our destination when we go to town. Perhaps we should invest in walking a little further.

Check your load. Empty the car of unwanted items that increase the weight. Is it necessary to carry everything we have in the car. If we decrease the weight we will save fuel, itâ€™s a simple thing. Simple tips but effective, when we save fuel we save money but we also help to save our environment. In the end we all win.

Theresa Plath (30 years), Ray White Cairns South and Paul Stirling (30 years) Ray White Smithfield and Cairns Beaches received their awards during a virtual gala evening. Theresa was also awarded number four Selling Principal in Queensland for number of Sales and Acknowledgement as an Elite Performer for 2020. Angela Capitanio, Ray White Cairns Central received her 30 year recognition back in 2017 now celebrating over 33 years in the industry and also with the same agency. WHEN selling your home, there are many little things you can do to give your agent the best possible chance of getting a contract. These small steps will make for a better open home and could even improve the offer from a prospective purchaser.

4. Clean. Are the bathrooms clean? What about the oven and cook top? Ensure those areas are sparkling. A dirty bathroom or kitchen will bring down the asking price. The buyer will think they will need to redecorate or renovate a dirty bathroom and this can be expensive, so the offer can be reduced.

1. Prepare. Do your home work. Before listing go to many open homes. Be critical, review how the home is presented. Look for the simple touches that lift the appeal of the home. It might be as simple as flowers in the living area, how they arrange the towels in the bathroom, but look for the small things that can make a difference. 2. De-Clutter every room. Clutter makes rooms appear smaller and also less appealing. Wide open spaces will sell. Move the clutter to a storage shed. Empty cupboards, clean up toys in the kids bedrooms and make your home more appealing for a greater section of the market. 3. Lighten and Brighten. Dark rooms are a turn off. Throw open the curtains, check that all lights work and replace all old bulbs with brighter LED bulbs. Add a few lamps to the living area

5. If it’s broken, fix it. Those little jobs need to be done. The leaking tap, or the door that sticks. These can all be deal breakers and will reduce the price. 6. D e - p e r s o n a l i s e your home. It’s important that a buyer sees a home they can make theirs. So don’t showcase your life, de-personalise and let the buyer see how they can make this place theirs. Also store all jewellery, valuables and electronic equipment away from sight. 7. Time to garden. Get the garden looking neat and also under control. Weed the garden, spread mulch. Let the buyer see that all they have to do is maintain the space not bring in a skip and clear the jungle. 8. Is the street appeal great? Stand outside and really look at your home. Review the street appeal. Is it tidy, neat, appealing?

Clean the yard; ensure bins are empty and also smelling nice. Empty the bug and fly catcher. Check the palings on the fences. All little jobs but very important. 9. Time to style. Style the bedroom, a nice throw over the bed, add some extra colour cushions. Arrange the towels in the bathroom. Move the toothbrushes and toothpaste. Add some colour. It doesn’t need to look like Vogue, but looking stylish will help.

10. Make an entrance. Clear the entrance, add some colour. Hit them with a wow factor when they walk in. Get rid of the shoes in the entrance. Declutter and add colour. If taking a little time and effort helps you to get a contract quickly and also achieve the price expectation you have, it is worth taking the time to help your Agent out by preparing for your first open home.

Film festival to showcase local talent

The tropical ambience of Munro Martin Parklands will set the scene for the annual Understory Film Festival screening on November 7. Tickets officially went on sale this morning for the staging of the Understory Film Festival Screening and Awards Night – an evening dedicated to recognising the expertise, energy and commitment of students, emerging and professional filmmakers living in the Far North.

Open to emerging and professional filmmakers from the Far North region, the festival welcomes submissions each year for short films of 8 minutes or less across a vast selection of genres including comedies, documentaries, music videos, animations, experimental and more. Cairns Mayor Bob Manning said the festival provided local filmmakers the chance to showcase their works to a wide and appreciative audience. “With this year’s event to be hosted in Munro Martin Parklands bring a picnic basket, a low set chair or a rug, and take the chance to enjoy a selection of short films produced right here, under the tropical night sky.” The awards ceremony screens the best of the best, with short-listed entries in the running for awards across seven categories, as well as the People’s Choice Award.

AARON AMBARD AS the sun began to set on another perfect day in the Atherton Tablelands, I started my short journey down the Avenue of Honour, a living memorial on the shores of the tranquil Lake Tinaroo, near Yungaburra. The chill of the late winter breeze setting in gave me an added sense of loss, as I learned about Ben Chuck, a local Atherton lad 27 years old, who gave his life fighting in Afghanistan.

Local Heroes Honoured at Lake Tinaroo

Walking the sand-coloured path which reflects the endless dunes of the Middle East, you are flanked by an honour guard of Flame trees, standing at attention in silent vigil over those who walk in remembrance toward the central monument. Each tree a living reminder of those that never returned home, but are still watching over us. The wingspan of the statue looms overhead at the central point of the Avenue, one wing visibly broken to symbolise the hardships and turmoil our defenders endure in the theatre of war, which is mounted upon a pillar of stone gathered from within a 20km radius of Camp Russell, Uruzgan.

Well, we were in heaven! I felt like it was the first time I had tasted pizza properly in my life, and am afraid I will never be able to eat pizza anywhere else again. Il Forno makes their own gluten-free pizza dough and my gluten-intolerant friend said it was absolutely delicious, which was beyond exciting for her because she’s

used to processed shopbought pizza bases which “taste like cardboard.” I think she was about to start crying! Chocolate heaven in our backyard TANYA MURPHY

WHEN people think of world-famous chocolate they often think of Belgium or Switzerland, but did you know we have one of the world’s top award-winning luxury chocolate producers right here in Far North Queensland? This may be news to some people, as Charley’s Chocolate Factory in Mission Beach has sprouted up from a former banana farm to Australia’s most awarded chocolate maker faster than you can say “macadamia praline!” Former Melbourne-based handbag retailers Lynn and Chris Jahnke had no prior experience with cocoa growing or chocolate making, but decided to take on a new challenge after learning that Australia’s Tropics had perfect conditions for growing cocoa. They planted their first cocoa plants on their 400-acre Mission Beach property in 2012 and their first harvest in 2014 produced just under 50 bars. Three short years after that, they were recognised as a world class chocolate

maker and judged to be one of the 18 finest cocoa producers in the world at the International 2017 Cocoa of Excellence Awards in Paris. This is the highest international cocoa competition and is the first time an Australian cocoa producer has been so honoured.

“We have a close relationship with the plantations, the growers and the processes they use to ensure the ingredients are ethically sourced and of a high quality, and this is what has enabled us to make some of the world’s finest Single Origin Chocolate,” said Lynn.

“’Single Origin’ means that the beans used to make each variety of chocolate are grown in one specific area, estate, or farm, which produces chocolate with a more distinctive taste, showcasing the unique flavour notes peculiar to the soil and weather conditions of that region or estate.

“When we process our cocoa nibs we use only traditional granite stone conches in a process which is lengthy and expensive and is therefore not used by the mass producers,” she said.

“There are only a handful of places in the world where the cocoa is grown, the pods opened and the beans processed and made into chocolate all in the one place. This is known as ‘Tree to Bar’ and Charley’s Chocolate Factory is one of them!” said Lynn. “This is the only place in Australia where guests can see chocolate being grown, fermented, and handcrafted into bars all in the same place.” To meet growing demand, Charley’s also use cocoa beans from other cocoa plantations across Far North Queensland and Papua New Guinea.

“Just like a fine wine, this results in chocolate that’s richer, more natural, and undeniably ‘special’.” Reflecting this, Charley’s range includes two “Karkar Island” chocolate bars made from beans grown in Madang Province in Papua New Guinea, “King Ranch” chocolate from the Tully River Valley, “Shannonvale” chocolate from near Port Douglas, and “Mount Edna” chocolate, from beans grown on the Jahnke’s own farm.
