By Isabella Guzman Gonzalez 23-YEAR-OLD Cairns resident Ellana Pierce is in love with the sea; it’s a memory she carries from childhood. Her passion for the sea is only matched by her desire to protect it. Ellana lived most of her life in Bribie Island, but her life-long dream was to live in Cairns, so she packed her bags and settled down in Far North Queensland. “Since I was young, I wanted to move to Cairns; I love the heat; I thrive on it,” Ellana said. As someone who has always lived by the sea, swimwear was essential for her; however, she realised there was a big gap in the market. The fashion industry is one of the major ocean polluters as it is responsible for 20% of the global wastewater and pouring 1.4 million trillion plastic fibres into the ocean. “There weren’t many swimwear options that were sustainable and affordable,” Ellana said. “I wanted to be able to work in the path of conservation but

have my own business.” Ellana founded El Adrift, a brand of swimwear designed in Australia made from repurposed fishing nets, and Ellana ensures that all her processes are environmentally friendly. “COVID actually played in my favour,” she said. “We had all these lockdowns, so I just ended up working on the business every night after work. “There was a lot of brainstorming and getting the idea on paper, getting the material samples, looking at manufacturers, planning what I was going to do for the next few months. “I just did everything I could do with limited money.” “I did a massive list of names, and I narrowed it down. My name is Ellana, and everyone calls me El, and I love adrift because I thought it sounded very dreamy.” El Adrift officially launched mid-2021, and in September, Ellana started her first pre-order. To take her start-up further, Ellana decided to represent Cairns in the Accelerator for Enterprising Women shark-tank

event run by the Australian Government in Canberra “It appealed to me a lot because I thought all I have to do is show how passionate I am, and my brand is my baby, so it wasn’t hard to be excited about it,” she said. “So, I was trying to win either the sustainability or popular vote.” Ellana’s efforts paid off, she went on to the competition’s finals, and although she didn’t win first place, as one of the runners up, she received $7,000 to grow her brand. “I felt very lucky to be able to represent Cairns. I love the people; I feel like Cairns is Hawaii in Queensland, so I feel very proud to represent Cairns even when I’m not a local,” she said. “And it’s just massive and life-changing. I was a uni student, so I couldn’t work full time, and with COVID, I couldn’t save a lot of money. “You spend all your money when you’re growing your business, and you don’t expect to get anything back because it’s your passion, so you don’t mind.

“But for someone to hand over that money and say, “you’re doing a really good job, keep going,” it’s very motivating. With the funding, Ellana plans to further her business, launch new collections, and even donate to ocean conservation organisations. As a young entrepreneur, Ellana wants to send a message to young girls who have an idea for a start-up to dream big and fight for their vision. “I want young girls to look up to the other finalists and me and say - they went for it, so can I,” she said. “Young women are becoming braver to stand up and say – this is how I want to live my life; this is what I want to do. “So, I would say to young women, go for it and stick to your guns, be confident, surround yourself with people that are going to be supportive and look at the risks, ask yourself what you can offer to the world that’s different.”

Douglas Shire resident, Sandy Davies of HappyPause, is coauthor of the book ‘Courage and Confidence: What It Really Takes to Succeed in Business’ sharing advice and inspiring women to overcome their fears to follow their calling. The book combines the expert advice of 24 Australian female business leaders. JCU Partners with WHO in the battle against tropical diseases THE World Health Organisation (WHO) has picked James Cook University as a partner to battle diseases that kill more than a million people and make more than a billion people sick every year. JCU’s College of Public Health, Medical and Veterinary Sciences (CPHMVS) has been re-designated a WHO Collaborating Centre for Vector-borne and Neglected Tropical Diseases (VBDs and NTDs). For 20 years, JCU had been a WHO Collaborating Centre (WHOCC) for the Control of Lymphatic Filariasis, SoilTransmitted Helminths and other Neglected Tropical Diseases. Professor Peter Leggat, coDirector of the new WHOCC, said the re-designation means JCU will be broadening its remit to include controlling some of the world’s most neglected tropical diseases, such as dengue and leprosy. “We are thrilled to be working ever more closely with WHO and our network of partners towards controlling and eliminating some of these serious tropical diseases,” Professor Leggat said. “The re-designation reflects our historic contributions to WHO, as well as our broad expertise and deep commitment in the field. “The WHOCC’s expertise will continue to be extremely valuable in supporting WHO’s capacity to implement its mandated work in the global control of tropical diseases.

“For example, in its long-term vision of a world free from some of the most neglected of the neglected tropical diseases,” he said. Co-Director of the WHOCC Maxine Whittaker said tropical diseases were still a global issue. “The burden caused by vectorborne diseases, which account for one-sixth of human illnesses and disability suffered worldwide, and neglected tropical diseases, many of which are carried by vectors like mosquitoes and ticks, account for at least 11 % of the global burden of disease,” Ms Whittaker said. “Some of them occur in tropical and subtropical Australia, such as trachoma, intestinal worms and dengue. “We know that neglected tropical diseases affect neglected populations - the 1.4 billion people who are classified as the world’s poorest, and for whom accessible health services, clean water and good sanitation are not available. “Every year, there are more than 1 billion cases and over 1 million deaths from vector-borne

diseases, globally,” she said. “In addition to their impact on health, vector-borne and neglected tropical diseases contribute to an immense social and economic burden and can perpetuate the cycle of poverty. “However, many of these diseases are easily preventable and may be eliminated with improved water and sanitation, vector control, and universally accessible primary health care, as part of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. “The WHOCC will support a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to people’s health and wellbeing,” said Professor Whittaker. She said JCU would also continue working to eliminate lymphatic filariasis (elephantiasis). Professor Whittaker said in addition to the invaluable work of aiding affected countries and peoples, the WHOCC can provide placements and work-integrated learning opportunities for JCU students and research, education and collaboration.

Powering community groups in Cairns and FNQ The Morrison Government is supporting community groups across Cairns and Far North Queensland to help them increase energy efficiency and reduce emissions. Six community organisations in Cairns and Far North Queensland will receive grants for projects under the government’s Powering Communities Program. munity groups reduce their power bills and emissions while supporting local jobs. “Energy bills are often one of the biggest overheads for volunteer organisations, and these grants will be a welcome boost,” Mr Entsch said. “Groups like Edge Hill/ Whitfield Progress Association are the lifeblood of our community. The more they can save on running costs, the more they can spend to support the local community. “It was very pleasing to see grassroots organisations across the region receive funding under this highlysuccessful program. “The grants will be used for projects such as installing LED lighting, installing solar systems and replacing existing air conditioning with more efficient systems.” Federal Industry, Energy and Emissions Reduction Minister Angus Taylor said that lowering the energy costs of community groups would positively affect both locally and nationally. “This funding of between

$5,000 and $12,000 to community groups from all the 151 federal electorates of Australia will allow them to spend more on their essential activities,” Mr Taylor said. “At the same time as these groups are providing increased assistance to their local communities, they will be playing a part in our national efforts to reduce emissions. “These include installing solar panels or a battery, replacing lighting with LEDs, conducting an energy audit and upgrading air conditioners, hot water systems or a refrigerator with more efficient models.” Applications for grants under the program opened in March 2021. The Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources selected the successful applicants after considering them for eligibility and completeness.

MUM of two, midwife and published author, Bernadette Lack, is on a quest to help women to strengthen their bodies and minds for the process of childbirth and postpartum care. Ms Lack is the founder of ‘Core and Floor’, a program with workshops for everyone who wants to strengthen their pelvic floor, prepare to give birth and heal after birth. On Sunday, April 3, she will visit Cairns to offer a morning and afternoon workshop on pelvic floor and motherhood at the Spinal Life Healthy Living Centre. At age 19, Ms Lack started presenting symptoms of incontinence

which progressively got worse, and although she sought help, she would not find it easily. “I saw a physio, and I was told to do my Kegels, stop running because I was a marathon runner, and not get pregnant for a few months. I did all that. “The minute I got pregnant, I started vomiting. So I spent my whole pregnancy covered in urine and vomit; it was very traumatic and very debilitating.” “I thought I couldn’t give birth. I really questioned my body’s ability,” she said. “But I ended up smashing my home birth; that motivated me. If my body can do that, then it can heal.” Ms Lack went on a journey of research and investigation to find out what other people were doing to strengthen their pelvic floor and heal their bodies. “Once I worked on myself to heal, I thought other women need to know this, and that’s how Core and Floor started,” she said. In her process, Ms Lack wants to raise awareness on how the health system has normalised pain and trauma as a part of motherhood. “If you think about how long it takes women to conceive a baby, then to grow it, then to birth it, it’s

not all just going to heal in a couple of weeks magically,” she said. “And our culture and our society don’t respect it. “We expect pregnant women to be working and keeping up with everybody else, and no, we need to be home with people doing things for us. “Pregnancy and postnatal were meant to be these events in our lives where we were surrounded and supported.” The health system tends to prime productivity over health, and babies over their mothers, resulting in preventable problems becoming ‘inevitable’. “Prolapse is one of the most common health issues in Australia, yet no one knows about it until they’ve got it,” Ms Lack said. “Think about how many appointments women get during pregnancy, and then as soon as the baby is born, they only get one. “And mostly they’re asked about their babies. “We’re not looking after the mum.” Ms Lack’s ultimate goal with Core and Floor is to educate around motherhood and women’s health so that issues like incontinence, prolapse and postpartum depression are not overlooked. “These women just get lost in

the system,” she said. “So many women contact me and tell me what their GP is saying – Oh, don’t worry about it, give it some time it’ll heal. But they are worried about it; they feel lost or sad. “We need resources and funding for women’s health. Without us you don’t get a next generation, you have to look after us. “Birth should be the most empowering event of your entire life. Birth is a function of our body, and our bodies know how to do it. “I want women to live their most empowering births, so they go into motherhood thinking – well, I just did that, and I can heal. “Mothers need to come first; a happy mum means a happy baby and a happy family,” she said. Four-year coral nurture program “An unprecedented success” AN underwater brigade of ecologists, biologists and tourism operators united off the coast of Cairns last Thursday to check the results of a four-year Coral Nurture Program that aims to protect highvalue Great Barrier Reef sites against future extreme weather events. The program is a joint partnership between University of Technology Sydney (UTS) scientists and the Port Douglas-based Wavelength Reef Cruises, funded by the Australian Government’s Reef Trust and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation. Lead UTS researcher and coral scientist Professor David Suggett said the Coral Nurture Program was “an unprecedented success”. “It’s been a year since we’ve been able to visit these specific reef sites, and they are looking spectacular,” Professor Suggett said. “The coral is looking very vibrant. We are seeing lots more recruitment, so it gives us lots of positive encouragement that the (Coral Nurture) reef sites are recovering.” “The collective action of operators planting tens of thousands of corals means we can now start to understand how, when and why coral replanting is successful.”

The Coral Nurture Program began four years ago when John and Jenny Edmondson, marine biologists and co-owners of the Port Douglas-based Wavelength Reef Cruises, set out to help tourism operators build reef resilience after experiencing the 2016 bleaching event. They have recruited five other Cairns-Port Douglas reef operators into the Coral Nurture Program. “After the bleaching in 2016, it was difficult to come out here and see it all,” Ms Edmondson said. “We came up with ideas of how to have a cheap and fast way of out-planting large quantities of coral and thereby returning the sites to what they used to be like. “We are seeing a really amazing percentage of coral cover now, simply because of both planting and natural recovery.” Under the management of scientists, it relies on staff from reef tourism boats to maximise their reef visits and tend to coral nurseries. The trained team salvage broken coral fragments and grow them on nurseries suspended two metres beneath the ocean surface. They then use

a specially designed Coralclip® device to attach corals to the reef without the need for chemical bonding agents. “The coral clip is just a simple little metal spring clip,” Mr Edmondson said. “It’s nailed into the reef rock, and a small coral fragment is placed under it. “As long as that coral fragment stays still for around about six weeks, it will self attach to the reef, and after a couple of years, it will look exactly like other coral colonies.” The Coral Nurture Program has delivered coral restoration at a scale never seen before on the Great Barrier Reef, with more than 70,000 coral fragments planted across 27 sites and an average 85% survival rate. While these statistics are impressive, the first generation of babies from the coral outplants is what most excites Professor Suggett. “The Coral Nurture Program has been an unprecedented success,” Professor Suggest said. “To give you an example, some of the very first fragments that we planted at the end of 2018, the size of my finger, are now spawning by themselves after only three years.

“This means all the planting activity can start rehabilitating the reef on its own.” Both Professor Suggett and the Edmondsons believe the key to success is the partnership between science and tourism and the capacity for the tourism industry to respond quickly to future events. “It’s not just about restoring local reef sites,” Mr Edmondson said. “Restoration is a small part of it…it is capacity building, which is increasing the number of operators and the number of crew that can help respond to future extreme weather events and providing new expertise to the industry.” They hope that the reopening of Australia’s borders to international travellers and an increase in reef trips will help boost the program. “Ultimately, we want visitors to come out, stick their heads underwater and see beautiful coral in its natural state,” Mr Edmondson said. “Because once you see it, you’ll love it, and there’s a greater chance you’ll become part of its future.”

Federal Employment, Workforce, Skills, Small and Family Business Minister Stuart Robert said the awards would focus on creative initiatives developed within the VET sector as the nation continues its economic recovery. “This year, we’re introducing a new award for Innovation in VET, which recognises employers, training providers and organisations who have made the most of a challenging year for the sector,” Mr Robert said. “We have seen an unprecedented surge in the number of apprentices or trainees being employed across the country. “Last year alone, there were 1 in 4 Australian businesses with an apprentice or trainee, which demonstrates the strength of the skills system under the Morrison Government. “Recent data from the National Centre for Vocational Education Research has found the proportion of Australian businesses with apprentices and trainees is at its highest level since 2011, which shows our investment in VET is paying off.” Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch said the Australian Training Awards provide a chance to highlight success stories of exceptional people and businesses who are going above and beyond to ensure our skills base. “I encourage Far North Queenslanders to nominate exceptional locals working in the VET sector – whether they are apprentices, trainees or businesses,” Mr Entsch said. “If you know someone who is doing a great job, nominate them today. “Let’s show the rest of the nation what our locals can do. Disaster assistance available for Far North Queensland DISASTER assistance is now available for Far North Queensland’s Carpentaria and Mareeba Shire Councils, which were hit by severe thunderstorms and flooding associated with a low-pressure trough earlier this month. The assistance is being provided through the jointly-funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA). Federal Minister for Emergency Management and National Recovery and Resilience, Senator the Hon Bridget McKenzie, said DRFA assistance would cover the costs of cleaning up, repairing roads and other public infrastructure damaged by flooding associated with the severe storms from February 1 to 7. “This event produced multiple days of rain and thunderstorms over Far North Queensland, some of which were severe, causing short-term isolation to areas of Mareeba and Carpentaria,” Minister McKenzie said. “The damage to local road infrastructure is already apparent, with further damage expected to be uncovered as floodwaters recede and more remote areas become accessible. “We want to ensure both Carpentaria and Mareeba Shire

Councils are supported and that they have access to vital funding to clean-up and repair the damage,” Minister McKenzie said. Queensland Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Mark Ryan said the activation of the DRFA will ensure the councils have the support they need on the road to recovery from the impacts of Queensland’s ongoing disaster season. “The activation of the DRFA will ensure communities in the top end who have been cut off by closed roads and flooded rivers are reconnected through disaster recovery, and counter disaster works in Carpentaria and Mareeba Shire,” Minister Ryan said. “The flooding has isolated communities such as Burketown in Carpentaria and Dimbulah and Mutchilba in Mareeba Shire. “The assistance measures activated today under the DRFA are aimed at public safety cleanup operations, such as clearing debris once floodwaters recede, and the repair of essential public infrastructures such as

roads and bridges. “The Commonwealth and Queensland Governments continue to work closely to support ongoing recovery efforts and identify where they can provide

The Prime Minister has under estimated the extent and result of such brainwashing in our schools and Universities and it needs to be addressed urgently. The ‘Green advocate Billionaires’ who stand to gain a fortune from our ignorance and compliance, will be instrumental in our downfall if they are not stopped. We will be crushed by our inaction on the basic Security of our country and the negative impact on our economy. We won’t have the finances to fight a war, or deter such expan-

This will help to raise awareness and funding for breast cancer research, by supporting the National Breast Cancer Foundation and raising vital funds for world-class breast cancer research. Doing the maths, the girls will be attempting 1,705 squats EACH, which works out to a

grand total of 20,460 combined squats. The Mossman Support Services Team would love it if people could rally behind them and donate to their cause. They have a target of $500, which is more than achievable if everybody gives a little bit. I reckon they may well go above and beyond this with your help. NICOLA Baker has had a fire in her belly since her baby boy had his first stroke at 11 months old. Jed was some years later diagnosed with Moyamoya Disease, a rare disease of the brain. Jed was also discovered to have this disease in his renal arteries as well, and has had 3 brain surgeries and a renal artery bypass. During this journey, Nicola has discovered that there has been very little information or support for Moyamoya Disease here in Australia, and so in September 2019, just before Jed’s 17th birthday, she established Moyamoya Australia. Moyamoya Australia is a registered charity and strives to raise awareness of Moyamoya Disease and provide support to those afflicted by the disease. MMA has enjoyed significant success with its events, namely the Smokey Blue Rally, the Great Blue Pigeon Race, and also the Blue Tie Gala Ball. This year, the Aussie Locums Blue Tie Gala Ball has been set for 7 May 2022, and is looking to be a sell out. Following completion she lived in Hong Kong for over 8 years where she owned 2 of her own Veterinary Clinics and managed a number of others. She gained extensive experience in small animals and exotics during this time. Dr. Susan is passionate about animal welfare and has spent much of her time over the years caring for orphaned and injured orangutans in Borneo, Indonesia, where she also assisted in the set up of an animal care clinic for Orangutan Foundation International. She has recently moved her clinic to a purpose built facility and is currently in the final stages of a Law degree with the University of Southern Queensland, where she won 2021 Wilson Buckley Family Violence and Child Protection Law prize for highest overall mark in the course.

BRIDIE was born in Norfolk, England and has loved animals since she was a child. She emigrated with her family to Australia in 2003 and settled in Brisbane. She attended the University of Queensland, Gatton, where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Science in 2012. After volunteering for 6 months at Lone Pine Sanctuary in Brisbane, she was made a full-time keeper. She held this position until 2014, when she and her partner moved to Cairns and Bridie began working as a keeper at Kuranda Koala Gardens. In 2017 she was promoted to Second in Charge of Kuranda Koala Gardens and Birdworld Kuranda. Bridie and her husband were married in October of 2019 and became homeowners in 2020.

RACHEL MacLeod loves everything about computers. She is an expert who offers knowledgeable, friendly, speedy service for all makes and models of both PC and Mac and desktops and laptops. The AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award has returned in 2022, with four Queensland women with a shared passion for rural and regional communities vying for the prestigious award. Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Communities Mark Furner said the AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award acknowledged and supported women’s essential role in rural industries, businesses, and communities. “The Award provides a platform to inspire and support Australian women to use and develop their skills to benefit their industries and communities,” Mr Furner said. “Our four finalists join a 300-strong alumni that collaboratively works to shape the perception of women in regional and rural Australia and provides a network to support their future endeavours. “This year’s winner will receive a $15,000 bursary and represent Queensland at the national awards in October where they have the chance to win an additional $20,000 bursary.” The finalists are: · Chinchilla child health nurse Rebecca Bradshaw who is delivering online and inperson child health support for rural communities;

· Dalby businesswoman Jilly Tyler who is developing an innovative range of ‘quick cook’ retail-ready family meals with a beef focus; · Innisfail AgTech entrepreneur Jennifer McKee who has developed Grower Support, an all-in-one compliance management software platform for the horticultural industry; and · Townsville photographer and AgTech champion Fiona Lake is developing a project to inspire women to adopt AgTech. Westpac Regional General Manager Queensland Peta Ward said the AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award was an excellent platform that encouraged others to continue to pave the way for diversity across industries and for women to develop their business journey further. “Women are driving innovation in our regions, and Westpac is proud to continue to support the AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award, to further raise awareness and publicly recognise the achievements and leadership of women in our communities,” Ms Ward said. Chair of the Queensland Rural Women’s Award Alumni Committee Ann Ross said every woman had a personal journey, with no two the same. “My vision for the Rural Women’s Award is that rural

THIS week, Cairns culinarian app recruitment start-up Gathar won the Women in Regional Business category of the Innovate with nbn™ Grants Program. Gathar, launched in 2018, is an app that connects dining customers with cooks, chefs, caterers, and grazing stylists to come to homes, offices, or holiday rentals. The app is experiencing its highest level of demand since launching and has served experiences to more than 15,000 diners, with more than 150 independent small business partners servicing 24 mostly regional locations nationally. By Maria Larkins THE rediscovery of a Chinese temple is at the heart of a new Cairns Museum exhibition revealing the untold story of Chinese settlement in the Ingham region at the turn of the 20th century. ‘Rediscovering the Buk Ti; Chinese Settlers in the Lower Herbert Valley’, brings to light the rich heritage of Chinese families, the role of Chinese men in the development of the sugar industry and the movements of settlers as they navigated the then White Australia policy. Buk Ti Goong (temple) in Halifax was their cultural hub. Still, its existence had faded into the past until a small group of volunteers from the Ingham Family History Association Inc began researching the region’s Chinese history. The temple was built in the late 19th century and remained functioning with a caretaker through to

the 1930s. Cairns Historical Society and Cairns Museum Executive Officer Fleur Anderson said that it was thrilling to get residents in touch with Chinese history in FNQ. “Fittingly, the deity Buk Ti is the Emperor of the North or the Northern God,” Ms Anderson said. “The Cairns Museum is excited to bring this regional story to Cairns. “It not only allows locals to discover more about the rich history of the Far North but also explores the business and family links between Cairns Chinatown - as the largest Chinese hub outside of Brisbane - and a smaller regional community 230 kilometres south.” The exhibition, which received a ‘best project’ accolade at the 2021 Gallery and Museum Achievement Awards, was created with the assistance of Dr Sandi Robb, a historian with specialist knowledge of Chinese his-

tory and heritage in North Queensland. Dr Robb has just been appointed to the role of Collections Manager at Cairns Museum. “Dr Sandi Robb has a sound knowledge of the museum sector and collections management,” Ms Anderson said. “She can see the big picture whilst taking care of routine detail, achieve the business outcomes required and deliver these in a positive way that aligns with our organisation values and behaviours. “She is known to collaborate and consult with her colleagues, volunteers, and other stakeholders in a professional, respectful and flexible manner.” Rediscovering the Buk Ti; Chinese Settlers in the Lower Herbert runs from February 19 to April 30.

THE TALENTED MR. TILLS By Maria Larkins

IN August 1888, a young carpenter from Hull, Yorkshire took up Homestead Selection 432 of 159 acres near Machan’s Beach. Richard Alfred Tills settled there until his marriage to Caroline Adelaide Anderson in 1896. The couple then moved to Lake Street and had five children: Alfred (1898), Richard (1900), Ivy (1901), Olive (1903), and Marie (1905). An accomplished craftsman, Tills constructed several notable buildings in the district. including a Hotel at Double Island (now Trinity Beach), Fretwell’s Racecourse Hotel, the Bank of Australasia, and a salubrious residence in Lake Street for Mr. Andrew Banning. He was passionate about the local hardwoods and operated the Cairns Sawmill Company from 1889 to 1907. Tills was also known for his political interests and was Chairman of the first local government, the Cairns Divisional Board, and Mayor from 1900 to 1901 and again in 1907. He also sat on numerous committees and was founding member of the Cairns Garrison Battery. Imposing in stature, standing six feet eight inches tall, Tills was known to be a practical man with a personable nature. His unsuccessful bid for a seat in Queensland Parliament in 1904 also revealed an acerbic sense of humour. When an intoxicated opposition supporter challenged Tills about taxation he is said to have assured the interjector that it would be “most unjust” for him to pay any taxation “in addition

to the large amount he gave to the Treasury through the bung-hole of a beer cask”. In 1906 he endured the misfortune of a cyclone at the sawmill and anguish at home. Mrs. Tills took ill after the birth of their fifth child and was admitted to the Toowoomba Asylum. She died there in 1915. Tills abandoned his political ambitions and became an Inspector of Public Works. He travelled extensively from 1912 until 1929, from Innisfail to Thursday Island and to the back country towns of Normanton, Burketown and Chillagoe. The talented and energetic Mr. Tills then practiced as an architect for seven years. R. A. Tills died on June 7, 1937 and was given a Masonic funeral. “MONO” COMES TO CAIRNS

NOELINE Brown (The Naked Vicar Show), Max Gillies (The Gillies Report) and John Wood (Blue Heelers) are about to arrive in Cairns with the hit comedy “Mono” by Angus FitzSimons (Senior Moments). The three legends are the entire cast of the show, and John Wood notes that with an average age of just over 80; “we are the oldest touring cast of any production in the world, until Mel Brooks decides to do a one man show or Cher confesses her real age.” “Age is only a state of mind” Max Gillies said. “That said, I do have an 80 year old state of mind. WEST CAIRNS TPI MEMORIAL BOWLS CLUB INC Under overcast and sultry conditions twenty players were able to finish their game just before a threatening tableland storm was expected to stop our game earlier than scheduled. The winning team as drawn by a random card draw was skipped by Ken Broughton with team members Gwen Cory and Tony Simao. We were advised

that two of our senior players who recently joined our club from Atherton are now moving to Gordonvale to a retirement home. They will be missed by all of our club members, and we wish them all the best at their new home and understand they will be joining Gordonvale Bowls Club. Our next game will be held next Monday commencing at 1:30pm and ending at 4:30pm. As usual afternoon tea will be included as part of the green fee. Cards are called at 1:15pm and all members should be at the club at that time. Members who wish to play, including any visiting or members of any local club will be made most welcome to join us as the game does not involve any competition and is played on a social basis. FNQ organisations partner to bring farmers sustainable solutions

Townsville-based organisation VRM Biologik Group and Cairnsbased company Sun Savannah Foods have joined forces to improve the state of agriculture and sustainably grown foods in Far North Queensland. Through this partnership, VRM Biologik is investing in an end-to-end supply of climateadapted, high-value seed stock for drought mitigation programs across the country. These programs work to regenerate the land they are grown on and create crucial profitability during fallow years. VRM Biologik Chief Executive Officer Kellie Walters said they were very excited about the partnership. “Ultimately, we’re joining two forces that align philosophically and to ensure that we provide an end-to-end market service for all the growers out there,” Ms Walters said. The partnership came to fruition as both organisations wanted to focus on farmers’ desire to move to more sustainable practices. “We were looking for opportunities to integrate our offering,” Ms Walters said. “We know that our farmers are particularly keen to move away from conventional practices and more towards sustainable farming,

and this was an opportunity to offer that to them.” VRM Biologik brings its world-first technology for improving carbon sequestration and soil moisture to the partnership. This technology underpins the ability to grow in dry periods without chemical inputs and supercharges the capacity to grow climate-adapted specialist food and fodder crops using seed stocks developed locally. Ms Walters said this technology gives them an edge over other organisations. “Our technology is unique and what we see in the field with the farmers is that we can equip them with the capacity to manufacture their own agricultural input,” she said. “That is a fairly unique offering in the agricultural space.” Ms Walters expects that they can expand throughout the country with Savannah Sun Foods as a division of VRM Biologik. “We’re a proud North Queensland business, so we look to be able to influence what happens in the market in NQ and deliver those innovations to the rest of Australia and ultimately the world,” she said. “What we do in our backyard translates to our activities over in China, in the United States and increasingly in Southeast Asia.” With VRM Biologik as a soil restoration company and Sun
