School strikers call for renewable COVID recovery Briefs LGAQ Delegates

DOUGLAS Shire Mayor Michael Kerr and Deputy Mayor Lisa Scomazzon will fly the Douglas flag at 124th LGAQ Annual Conference next month. Council today endorsed Cr Kerr and Cr Scomazzon as voting delegates to represent the region and vote on motions put forward at the conference. The three-day conference will be held at the Gold Coast from October 19-21.

A group of Cairns school students and community members left school and work to hold a “School Strike for Climate” demonstration on Shields Street last Friday, September 25. They donned construction attire and wind turbine props to call on the government to invest in building new renewable energy projects. Along with students there were First Nations communities, unions, and everyday Queenslanders using speeches, live music, and signs to spell out their message to politicians: “Fund our future, not gas.” In September last year, an estimated five million protestors at 4500 strikes across 150 countries, including 3000 protestors in Cairns, left school and work for the global climate strike initiated by Swedish activist Greta Thunberg. But last week, with a COVID-19 limit of only 30 people for this year’s strike, the student organisers came up with creative ways to amplify their message. “What you see at the physical gathering is only the tip of the iceberg in terms

of participants,” said James Cook University student Holly Farnan. “Since we had to limit our numbers at the physical protest this year, we put a strong focus on online and individual action such as social media participation, zoom events, calling politicians, and creating artwork to send to politicians.”

With more than 400 protests registered across Australia it was the nation’s most widespread day of action against gas in history. “We are calling for the all candidates in the Queensland election to say no to the Federal Government’s destructive plans to give billions of COVID-19 recovery funds to new gas projects, and instead invest in Queensland’s potential as a renewable superpower,” said Ms Farnan. “Gas is a dangerous fossil fuel that’s fuelling climate change, and there are very few jobs in gas, so spending public funds on gas is a waste of money that is also putting my future at risk. “Renewables are the cheapest form of energy and would create thousands of jobs.

TOUR buses using the Daintree River Ferry crossing will be eligible for a 50% rebate on their tickets for the rest of the calendar year. Douglas Shire Council endorsed the ferry fee rebate starting on Thursday, October 1, as a COVID-19 relief measure for business owners, and rolled out further measures for businesses operating on the Daintree Coast. Business owners operating north of the Daintree River will be able to access a refund for a portion of their special refuse charge, which covers maintenance and operation costs of the Cow Bay transfer station. Council estimates the relief measures could keep almost $50,000 in the pockets of business owners.

Swim fees cut

LOCAL school students will get discounted entry into a learn-to–swim program at the Mossman Pool this summer. Douglas Shire Council resolved to reduce the entrance fee to $2 per student, saving local parents more than $30,000 in coming months. The reduced fees will support the seven local schools participating in the upcoming program.

New award recognises COVID-19 acts of kindness An award to recognise the altruistic efforts of a local person during the coronavirus pandemic has been added to this year’s Australia Day Awards.

GROUND BREAKING INNOVATION PETER MCCULLAGH Each year the seafood industry is responsible for approximately 500 million polystyrene fish boxes entering landfill and our oceans. Kurrimine Beach fishers, Tom and Kath Long were determined not to add to this total when looking for a way to transport their premium quality reef fish to the markets and restaurants in Sydney. Seeking a suitable alternative to the traditional white fish boxes, they researched and tested alternative products. “Nothing matched the polystyrene for performance or durability,” said Kath Long. “We needed an alternative. The volumes of polystyrene heading into landfill or even worse our oceans really concerned us. “With no suitable alternative we decided to innovate our own solution. “We needed it to be economically responsible as well as durable and also needed to thermally efficient.”

We need to ensure our boxes are durable, totally recyclable and also thermally efficient. Independent testing by the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, has proven that the KoolPak has equivalent thermal performance to polystyrene, and in some situations, such as if product is left on a tarmac in the sun, exceeds it. The KoolPak has airline approval for up to 25 kg, which is 25% more than an equivalent sized polystyrene box, without the need for a single use plastic liner bag or single use restrictions.

Bridge upgrades A total of 14 projects across North and Far North Queensland will receive a share of more than $290 million in Australian Government funding under Round 5 of the Bridges Renewal Program (BRP) and Round 7 of the Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program (HVSPP). Bahana Gorge Rd Bridge No. 2 is due for replacement with a concrete bridge including widening approaches. In total 14 projects received a share of the $290 million funding boost.

Fallen officers remembered CANDLES lit in memory of fallen officers. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Minister for Police Mark Ryan joined Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll to honour and remember fallen officers of the Queensland Police Service at a candlelight vigil in Brisbane. Representatives from the families of fallen officers gathered at the Queensland Police Service Memorial at dusk where the Premier, Commissioner Carroll and Minister Ryan lit candles in memory of those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, on the eve of National Police Remembrance Day. The Premier said she was extremely grateful for the work police did on behalf of all Queenslanders. “Police are special people,

they run towards danger to keep the rest of us safe. “And sometimes, tragically, they make the ultimate sacrifice. “It is up to all of us to make sure that sacrifice is honoured.” Commissioner Carroll said that despite current circumstances, it was extremely important to come together and honour those officers who were no longer with us. “Having the opportunity to dedicate time on the eve of National Police Remembrance Day to our families who feel the loss of their loved ones every day is so important,” Commissioner Carroll said. Curated by Trish Barnard, the exhibition at UMI Arts’ Jensen Street gallery features 15 photographic artworks which reveal the artists’ deep connection to Country. Nerelle Nicol is an emerging artist whose heritage is Torres Strait Islander and from the Juru clan of the Birri-Gubba people. Ms Nicol’s six exquisite photographs are a close-up study of ‘burie’ which is the Birri-Gubba language word for stones or rocks. “I am fascinated by the lines and detail in marks embedded into burie,” Ms Nicol said. “On the day I captured these images a messenger bird guided me to this place where Burie spoke to me; they reminded me of the strong

She has documented her country in dry season creek beds, which provide a refuge for various birds and animals before the wet season floods the landscape and fills these freshwater creeks.

Visitors to the exhibit will be able to buy one or more of these unique A3 sized digital images photographs at the very affordable price of $300 each - just in time for Christmas gifts. UMI Arts is the peak Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts and cultural organisation for Far North Queensland. Membership based, UMI Arts’ members are Queensland’s First Peoples with a traditional blood-line connection to the region.

Totally Mental Bike Ride

The Southside Mountain Bike Club is holding the second Totally Mental Bike Ride, on Saturday October 17 at Goldsborough Goldfields Trail. This event is part of Queensland Mental Health Week and is planned to be an annual event. Last year they raised $1700 for the Declan Crouch Fund for youth suicide prevention, they are hoping to do even better this year. The ride will be a 16km undulating trail, ridden at a relaxed pace. THE Paws and Claws Refuge and Boarding Centre in Port Douglas is one step closer to having a forever home after holding its inaugural “Dogs’ Day Out” fundraiser on Saturday, September 26. In September 2016 the charity lost its home due to a new development being built on its existing site, leaving the region’s

lost and abandoned dogs and cats with nowhere to go.

Paws and Claws CEO Michael Kerr said the organisation’s volunteers had been working tirelessly for years to fundraise for a new centre.

After an exhaustive search for a suitable new property, in 2017 the association purchased a former printing factory with the help of a $300,000 contribution from the Queensland government.

“There’s definitely a need for it because we used to care for and re-home around 200 pets a year which were neglected or abandoned by their owners, which we can’t do now that we’ve lost our facility,” he said.

However, to meet council regulations and be in the best interest of the animals and surrounding community, the building must be renovated and made sound-proof before it can be used.

From the brains behind many much-loved images on Aussie Macro Photos, Cairns photographer Bridgette Gower has created the first of its kind tour in Cairns that offers something for everyone from curious kids to professional photographers.

NATIVE freshwater species in Cassowary Coast waterways can gulp a sigh of relief this week thanks to the 2020 Tilapia Tournament which saw nearly 2,000 of the pesky Tilapia removed from Warrina Lakes in Innisfail. Five hundred people from throughout the Far North registered to take part in the Tournament, catching an extraordinary 527KG of Tilapia which are being recycled into compost for the Johnstone River Community Garden. The fishing competition was redesigned by Casso-

wary Coast Regional Council this year to accommodate COVID-19 restrictions in a week-long tournament during school holidays. Commonly referred to as the ‘cane toad of waterways’, Tilapia have a high rate of repopulation and aggressively outcompete native species for food and space leading to a decline in biodiversity and species abundance. Tournament co-host OzFish thanked Council for raising awareness of the damage Tilapia cause to local eco systems.

“The direct benefit of this event is the removal of this fish from local waters,” said North Queensland Project Manager for OzFish, Dr Geoff Collins, who explained that most new Tilapia infestations are caused by people moving live fish to new locations and not by natural spread across catchment boundaries.

“I’ve spent endless hours, walking the paths, peering into bushes, leaning on tree trunks, crouching on boardwalks, kneeling on logs, lying on grass beds, discovering the host plants, seasonal changes and favourite habitats of many of our local miniature beauties,” says tour creator Bridgette Gower.

“From frogs to caterpillars, beetles to butterflies, this tour is a welcome addition for visitors to Cairns as well as something new for locals to experience.” The tour takes place in the tropical paradise of Cairns Botanic Gardens, Bridgette will share with you several bug-hubs she has discovered that hides the most elusive beauties! The tour will introduce to the punk superstar, Green Jumping Spider, the tiny gold and green Eastern Dwarf Tree Frogs, and the bright yellow caterpillar of the Four O’clock Moth. These are just 3 of the most commonly seen in the renowned tropical gardens but are mostly unseen by the general public. TURNING VISITORS INTO AMBASSADORS We all choose to live here in the north. Even if we are born here, we still have a choice as to where we live. For almost 250,000 people we choose to live in this beautiful far north Queensland region. As someone who choose over ten years ago to move from Townsville to Cairns, I made that choice initially for work. In that time I have had ample opportunities to relocate but I choose to stay. I guess like so many residents I have grown to appreciate and love the lifestyle, environment, people and history of the region.

STORY IDEAS Thank you so much for our local paper I have really missed it. Well done. It is all positive reporting n that is so needed n necessary. A few ideas from me... 1. Highlighting people with disabilities working locally.

We live in a region that millions envy, millions aspire to visit and we can today become some of the proudest and best ambassadors for our region. Every visitor we see in our city and towns, at our restaurants, attractions and on our roads, have collectively made a decision to visit and spend money with us. They are our financial lifeline. I know tourists can be annoying on the road. They rubber neck, drive too slow, don’t know where they are going, but we need them and we have the opportunity to send them home, not with an annoying honk, but send them home with memories of some of the most stunning scenery and friendliest, warmest people ever. They will tell everyone just how wonderful the region is, and how warm and embracing the residents are. So the challenge for me is to be more patient on the road, more respectful of visitors and to take the time just to say hi and smile. I am sure it will make a difference. Imagine if 250,000 people also did it. Until next week, let’s see if we can each say hi to 25 total strangers.

Does this council really know what is going on? Do they even care? Not satisfied with a very unsuccessful bat relocation project, they now chop down trees on the esplanade. What my local councillor, Amy Eden is doing? She is supposed to be the ‘green’ councillor. But while on her watch we have a bat fiasco, and now trees in Palm Cove as well as the Esplanade being cut down. Arts funding available ARTS and cultural practitioners of all genres are invited to apply for a share in grant funding to support their projects. Applications are now open for the Major Round One (grants of up to $10,000) as part of the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) program for projects that start after 15 January 2021. The RADF program is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Cairns Regional Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland. Arts and cultural organisations, groups and individuals are eligible to apply to the Cairns RADF program.

the economic, social and cultural wellbeing of Cairns and the community,” Cr Manning said.

“As restrictions continue to ease, I am sure our arts community will be looking to funding programs like RADF in order to deliver projects and contribute to the recovery of this important sector. “The 2019/20 RADF Program funded 32 projects, which are projected to reach over 10,000 attendees and involve more than 250 participants and 110 volunteers, as well as creating short term employment across local arts industries. Arts and cultural activities that demonstrate a professional standard of work and contribute to the vitality and diversity of the arts industry in the Cairns region may be eligible for financial assistance.

RADF has helped hundreds of local projects to get off the ground, and RADF funding has a flow on effect across a number of business areas like fabricators, designers, photographers, and publishers. Each year more than 500,000 people engage with RADF projects across Queensland, ranging from public art installations, to local festivals and arts and cultural workshops, either as practitioners, participants or audience members. Minister for the Arts Leeanne Enoch said that the long standing RADF program would help to boost Queensland’s plan for economic recovery, supporting artists and arts workers with employment opportunities through $4.2 million in funding for regional cultural projects.

THE Cairns Regional Council’s annual “Our Cairns” survey is creating much discussion among local residents about whether dogs, cyclists and electric scooters should be allowed on CBD footpaths, and whether consumption of alcohol should be allowed on the Esplanade. Cairns Local News found several locals enjoying their breakfast at the Lillypad Café on Grafton Street on Tuesday and heard their views on these issues. Cairns local Chris Green said he had already filled out the survey and that in his opinion, cyclists, skateboards and electric scooters should be given designated lanes on the road.

University Hospital One Step Closer

IT was a short walk across the road for the Premier and Cairns Hospital Management, however it was a critical walk to announce the Cairns University Hospital was one step closer to fruition. The Queensland Government will invest $15 million to acquire land for a new research precinct near Cairns Hospital to be built in partnership with James Cook University. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the announcement – part of the Cairns/ FNQ Regional Recovery Action Plan - was in addition to a $52.9 million investment in upgrades for Cairns Hospital committed at the recent Cairns Community Cabinet. “This land will be for the construction of a purpose-built research, education and innovation (REI)

Historic, magestic and on your doorstep PETER MCCULLAGH Paronella Park, Queensland premier tourism attraction has humble roots. In 1913 Jose Paronella arrived in Australia from Catalonia in Spain. For the next 11 years Jose worked cutting sugar cane initially, then purchasing, improving and reselling cane farms. In 1924 he returned to Spain and married Margarita in 1925, returning back to Australia with his new bride. The boat trip back served as their honeymoon.

The site for Paronella Park, located at Mena Creek south west of Innisfail was first scouted by Jose in 1914. He eventually purchased it in 1929 for 120 pounds, and commenced to build his pleasure gardens and reception centre for the enjoyment of the public. The earliest structure on the site, the Grand Staircase was built to facilitate the carrying of the river sand used to make the concrete needed for the house and castle. First they built a house to live in before commencing with the design and construc-

tion of the castle. Apart from the house, which is made from stone, all of the other structures are made from reinforced concrete, the reinforcing being old discarded railway tracks. The concrete was covered with a plaster made from clay and cement, which they applied by hand, leaving behind the prints of their hands as a reminder of their work.

And while the light, airy and open setting is certainly a far cry from the cold and rainy Emerald Isle, the atmosphere is true to the traditional Irish spirit of hospitality, where visitors come as strangers and then come back every weekend as friends. Owners Mark Byron and Martin Pleasants are from Liverpool (an English city which is close to Ireland) and Belfast respectively. After realising there were no Irish pubs between Cairns and Port Douglas, they decided to rectify the situation by creating a restaurant with a theme that they were both very familiar with, and absolutely nailed it.

According to Mark, prior to O’Donnells moving in, the building had seen seven businesses come and go in as many years, so O’Donnells’ success and continuing expansion is not just a testament to its beautiful location, but also to its delicious food, welcoming service and quality live entertainment. Naturally the a la carte

menu offers plenty of traditional Irish fare such as braised beef cheeks, steak and Guinness pie, bangers and mash, Irish stew, and Irish mussels, but there is much more on offer. The grill offers some of the best steaks and seafood in town and a pizza kitchen will soon be unveiled on Wednesday.

On my last visit I had an absolutely amazing eye fillet cooked to perfection and my friend had the mussels, which she declared to be divine. Of course you can get a Guinness here, but we opted for cocktails, and with chilled out live music setting the mood we watched the moon rise over the sunset - it was a slice of heaven!

A Food Renaissance in Port AARON AMBARD

WHEN anyone mentions Italy I instantly think of Roman History, Vespas, dark-haired beaus and beauties, and of course food and art. But mostly food. And in Port Douglas I found a little dessert bar that has the history, passion, and the taste of Italy, and where the “art” is the food. Capannina, on the main street of Port Douglas, is owned and operated by Pino (Giuseppe) and his partner Gilly (Pronounced like the highway south of Cairns) who have travelled from Canberra seeking warmer climes, bringing authentic Italian desserts with them. Pino, a third generation Maestro Gelatiere, came to Australia in the mid-80’s as an architect, and was pivotal in construction and development of a local communi-

ty centre in Canberra, and deeply involved in other community projects. He opened his first Italian restaurant there until health issues brought him to Far North Queensland.

The gelato flavours Pino creates are made using ingredients sourced locally, from the Mungalli Creek Dairy in Millaa Millaa, to fresh produce from the local markets held every Sunday on Wharf street. Some of his stand-out creations include flavours such as Lavender, Basil, and Mandarin, but he says Chocolate will always be the most popular. Pastry chef Gilly’s masterpieces are exquisitely crafted fresh every day, and while Brioches are one of her favourite things to make, her “pièce de résistance” is definitely the ‘Bombolone’, a fluffy doughnut filled with icecream. Taking our whisky to the world In 1994, Sullivans Cove Distillery, then known as Tasmania Distillery, was established on the shores of the River Derwent in Hobart – a body of water known as Sullivans Cove. Like many of the world’s great whiskies, theirs is named after the place where it was born. Sullivans Cove is the second oldest whisky distillery in the modern Tasmanian (and Australian) craft distilling era, the first being Lark Distillery, established in 1992. The original owners of Sullivans Cove saw an opportunity when Bill Lark had the restrictive Tasmanian distilling laws changed in the early 1990s and wanted to throw their hat in the ring making Tasmanian single malt whisky. So they commissioned a brandy-type still to be built in the north of the state and shipped down to the site of the original distillery in Hobart. That original still is the very same one they use today. Unfortunately, some of the whisky produced and bottled in those early days was of questionable quality, and like many fledgling Australian distilleries, they tended to bottle the whisky a bit too

young. Consequently, that business failed, and in 1999 a new group of owners took over. The new owners of Tasmania Distillery hired Bill Lark, founder of the modern Australian whisky industry, to take over as distillery manager and help turn Sullivans Cove into a quality single malt whisky. When Bill Lark took over as distillery manager in 1999, he brought along his friend Patrick Maguire, who had worked with him at Lark Distillery. Patrick is still employed today as Head Distiller, and after 20 years with the business is the driving force behind Sullivans Cove’s success. Between the two of them and a few others, Bill and Pat refined the production processes of the distillery and were able to produce some very high quality single malt Tasmanian whiskies. The 600-odd casks produced between 1999-2003, known as the “HH” series, would go on to win several major awards, and really put Sullivans Cove on the map. But unfortunately that wasn’t until years later, and the business continued to struggle.

In 2003, the second group of owners gave up, and sold the business again. But Patrick wasn’t done with Sullivans Cove, so he decided to buy the place himself, along with several other investors. Today, Sullivans Cove is going stronger than ever. In 2017, Sullivans Cove was the first Australian distillery to release a single malt whisky aged entirely in a white wine cask. In 2019, Sullivans Cove continued to innovate by moving away from any form of flocking or filtration in their Single Cask whiskies, improving on the sustainability of their packaging, and continuing to experiment with cask styles and production methods to create even better whiskies in the future, not to mention continually releasing the oldest whiskies in Australia. With a new generation of keen young distillers now bringing their passion for Tasmanian whisky to the table, Sullivans Cove continues as Australia’s premier single malt distillery.
