There’s no arguing the appeal of Chelsea to the literary set. With gardens to stroll through, views to dream to and a unique air of risqué yet respectable, it really is a playground for creative minds, both in real life, and in the stories set in this exclusive neighbourhood.
Begin by casting your gaze up at the magnificent six-storey property of 1 64 Sloane Street. It was here that Jane Austen moved in with her brother, and literary agent, Henry in 1811. After a few years – in which Sense and Sensibility was penned
and published – she packed up her writing desk and moved just around the corner to the garden square of 23 Hans Place in 1814.
Continue your stroll down the stunning red-brick terrace of 2 Cadogan Square with the private garden to your right. with the private garden to your right. Turn at its South East Corner and you’ll soon find yourself at the foot of number 75, former home of “The Edwardian David Bowie” and author of The Old Wives’ Tale and Anna of the Five Towns, Arnold Bennett (1867-1931). From here, you’ll pass more for the same centuries-old architecture on your way to 3 4 Anderson Street, where Karl Marx lived in 1849 with his wife and children. But it wasn’t

long, as this famous revolutionary was evicted for not paying rent and moved to the German Hotel in Leicester Square, then Dean Street, Soho.
Back in Chelsea, it’s time to tempt yourself with the King’s Road as you take a few minutes sauntering down its glitzy, store-lined street. After just two blocks, you’ll find the brightly coloured cul-de-sac of 4 Bywater Street, where John Le Carré’s fictional spy, George Smiley, lived at number 9.
After taking in this pastel paradise, cross back over to the King’s Road to the end of 5 Smith Street, where number 50 saw P.L. Travers create and negotiate film rights of the world’s best-known nanny, Mary Poppins from 1946-1962. From Disney to Dracula, the three minute walk to Bram Stoker’s house leads you past iconic Victorian lamp posts

and balconies to 6 18 St Leonard’s Terrace, where his white-painted, lad-canopied, Grade II listed property is impossible to miss.
Turn back on yourself now, then left at the first corner of 7 Tedworth Square. Follow it round and you’ll soon arrive at number 23, the fivestorey corner home where Mark Twain, nom de plume of American writer, Samuel L. Clemens, lived between 1866 and 1867.
Your journey continues to 8 34 Tite Street, where author and playwright, Oscar Wilde, lived with his wife Constance from 1884 until his tragic arrest in 1895. It was here that he wrote his most famous works, including The Picture of Dorian Gray and The Importance of Being Ernest.
Next, head back up to Royal Hospital Road, then left towards
the river. You’ll soon arrive at 9 4 Cheyne Walk, the first of our addresses on this famously literary street. Despite living there for just 19 days before her death in 1880, this is still considered the London home of Mary Anne Evans, under the male pseudonym of George Eliot.
Just five doors down at 10 number 14, the prolific writer, philosopher and pacifist, Bertrand Russell lived here in 1902. Next door to him (but before his time) was the poet and artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti, who lived at 11 16 Cheyne Walk from 1862-1882. Those twenty years saw a number of cohabitants join him, including the novelists Algernon Charles Swinburne and George Meredith, not to mention a menagerie of unusual pets, including peacocks and wombats, of whom he was particularly fond.

Lawrence Street. Here you’ll find 12 Carlyle Mansions, known locally as The Writers’ Block, where several famous wordsmiths have called home. Henry James, T.S. Eliot, literary critic John Day Hayward, Ian Fleming, Somerset Maugham and Lionel Davidson were just a few of those names.
London doing its wet, cold and moody thing? Warm up with a drink at No. Fifty Cheyne before continuing up to 13 24 Cheyne Row. This was once the address of the most famous writer of the time, Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881), who lived there with his wife Jane from 1834. Carlyle’s House is a now a National Trust Museum, preserved exactly as they would have lived in the Victorian age.
From here, continue up to the cycle path a little further up and wander down it to 14 16 Lawrence Street. From 1750-1762, this end-of-terrace property was home to Tobias Smollett, novelist and poet who was best known for The Adventures of Roderick Random and The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle.
The final stop on our tour takes you back to the bustle of King’s Road and onward to 15 13 Mallord Street This Grade II listed townhouse was brought by AA Milne in 1919 and it was there that he lived with his wife Daphne, the real Christopher Robin and the most famous teddy bear in the world, for more than 20 years.

There’s a reason why savvy Instagrammers flock to Chelsea. It’s packed with architectural eye candy and backed up by serious cultural clout, all of which makes for a stream of captivating posts. Look out for Swarovski crystalcovered peacocks, pretty cocktails and opportunities to namedrop Vivienne Westwood, Eric Clapton and Oscar Wilde. Have your shutter-button finger poised!
Start at two of London’s most famous department stores 1 Harrods (@harrods) and 2 Harvey Nichols (@harveynichols) who both put on fabulous seasonal window displays. They’ve featured live models, dinosaurs made from clothes hangers, and the bold sashes of suffragettes. These displays are especially magical at Christmas time when the stores go all out to grab the attention of shoppers – and Instagrammers.
Carry on window shopping bigname brands on your way to 3 Number 64 Sloane Street, a unique black and white building among the red-brick townhouses. Tip: Compose your shot from across the road, opposite the equally striking modernist Danish Embassy, to include a red post box. As you wander along Sloane Street, be sure to capture the 4 Sloane Street road sign – Sloane Street and the SW1 post code are the epitome of luxury living. Leave the glitz of Sloane Street behind on 6 Pavilion Road, a tiny pedestrianised mews with a village feel. The old Victorian stable blocks are filled with indie and artisan traders. A butcher, a baker, a wine merchant, a cheesemonger and a gorgeously photogenic florist sit alongside fashion and beauty boutiques. If you’re hungry, there’s an array of delicious (and prettyas-a-picture) food to sample along the road. Or you could dine al fresco among lush tropical planting in the 7 hidden sunken courtyard that backs on to Sloane Street. Your stomach and Stories will thank you!
Turn left at the end of Pavilion Road onto Sloane Square. At the centre of this bustling intersection is one of London’s most beautiful fountains. Surrounded by trees and traditional street lights, the wonderfully understated 8 Venus Fountain shows a bronze figure of Venue pouring water into a pool lined with blue tiles. It’s incurably romantic, especially when you know the significance of the relief on the fountain’s base; it shows King Charles II and his lover Nell Gwynn by the Thames.
At the far end of Sloane Square, the red neon lights blazing on the 9 Royal Court Theatre (@ royalcourttheatre) are in striking contrast to the building’s ornate 19th-century facade.
From here, take a stroll along the King’s Road, the epicentre of the Swinging Sixties to 10 Duke of York Square, a bright and airy space filled with international brands and lively restaurants. Check out 11 Allister Bowtell’s ‘Two Pupils’, a captivating bronze sculpture of a boy and a girl from the Duke of York’s Royal Military Asylum, a school that once stood on this site providing education and a home to the orphaned children of soldiers. Set in 1814, the boy leaps a bollard, watched by the demure girl perched on a stone plinth. Nowadays, the Royal Military Asylum is the 12 Saatchi Gallery (@saatchi_gallery), which houses cutting-edge contemporary art in the grand Georgian building with a towering portico entrance that’s perfect for Insta-posing. Back in the Square, take a few shots of the 13 fountains. These clusters of water jets laid in the pavement send spouts of water dancing into the air. Kids and Instagrammers love them!
Carry on along King’s Road until you get to 14 Bywater Street. You can’t miss it – it’s on London’s most colourful streets, with hot pink, soft grey, lavender and yellow houses formed a residential rainbow on both sides of the Road.
Two minutes further along King’s Road is 15 The Pheasantry, named after a pheasant-breeding business based here in the 19th Century. The showy, arched entrance is at delightful odds with the high street shop facades on either side. In the
past, The Pheasantry has been an artist’s residence, a dance studio, a nightclub and apartments, and it’s all the more interesting when you picture former patrons Dylan Thomas, Eric Clapton, Germaine Greer and Humphrey Bogart dawdling under the arch. Not it’s a Pizza Express Live cabaret venue.
Stroll on to 16 Ivy Chelsea Garden (@ivychelsgarden). There’s often an elaborate flower installation over the entrance, while a riot of blooms, antique mirrors, eclectic plants, ferns and candles fill the interior. Get a table and feast on eggs Benedict with a vivid yellow splash of Hollandaise, salad sprinkled with edible flowers, or sip a seriously stylish cocktail.
Finish with a spot of video trickery at 17 Vivienne’s Westwood’s backwards clock, which dominates the galleon-like façade of World’s End. Opened by Westwood and Malcom McLaren, the boutique was a defining feature of the 1970s punk movement, patronised by Chrissie Hynde, Adam Ant, Siouxsie Sioux and The Sex Pistols.

Peel back the layers of history enveloping trend-setting Chelsea’s most enduring architectural and design treasures to discover the first ‘new town’, curious details and award-winning contemporary structures. You’re following in the footsteps of three centuries of architecture and design icons, from Sir Christopher Wren and William Morris to Arne Jacobson.
Kick off your tour by taking in the enormous wooden door, Doric columns and cupola of the 1 Royal Hospital Chelsea, home to the scarlet-coated Chelsea Pensioners and a larger-than-life gold statue of Charles II. Open to the public, the original buildings are the work of Sir Christopher Wren (1632-1723), who also designed St Paul’s Cathedral and Hampton Court Palace’s facade. Robert Adam (1728-92) and Sir John Soane (1753-1837) have also left their marks on the site.
Meander through the streets to a Chelsea institution: The Gaumont. A striking brutalist building with art-deco embellishments, home of the 2 Curzon Chelsea cinema on the King’s Road. (Currently under redevelopment, including restoration of the period façade, the cinema will reopen in 2027.)
Designed by Scottish architect William Edward Trent, the building opened in 1934 as the Gaumont Palace Theatre, but the site’s significance goes even further back. Turn your eyes towards the top of the art deco façade to the bas-relief faces; the masks of comedy and tragedy flank the face of William Friese-Greene, a cinematography pioneer who had a studio here in the late 19th century.
Just along the King’s Road, at 3 number 131-141 (Anthropologie), stands a flamboyant building with green, art nouveau tiles, stained-

glass windows and a domed cupola. If you think it looks a bit like a pub, that’s because it was meant to – minus one key ingredient! It’s one of a series of billiard halls built by the temperance movement to rival the opulent pubs of the late 19th century. A few more steps along the King’s Road is 4 The Pheasantry. You can’t miss the curious triumphal entrance arch, added in 1881. The building’s history is equally captivating. It’s been a pheasant-breeding business (hence the unusual name), a ballet studio, a club frequented by Dylan Thomas and Humphrey Bogart, and studios used by Eric Clapton and Germaine Greer. Today, Pizza Express Live continues The Pheasantry’s musical legacy.
Take a 15-minute walk to the award-winning 5 Vardo restaurant building in Duke of York Square. The contemporary, three-storey, stone-and-glass structure with a spiralling façade is the first in the UK with fully retractable curved glass walls; the public roof
terrace is an excellent viewpoint across the largely Grade II-listed Square. Look for the 6 Saatchi Gallery Gallery set in the Duke of York’s Headquarters, an imposing Georgian building with a grand portico entrance. Now home to a world-famous collection of contemporary art, in the past the building has housed the orphaned children of soldiers’, World War II spy trials, and various British Army offices.
Where the bustling King’s Road meets Sloane Square is the sweeping steel-and-glass façade of 7 Peter Jones & Partners department store. Dating from the 1930s, the art deco building is listed as the UK’s first example of glass curtain walling. Across Sloane Square, just outside the Underground Station, is a rather peculiar, beehive-like structure: 8 Haines of Sloane Square, London’s oldest news kiosk. When the current owner’s great-grandfather opened the kiosk in 1892 it was little more than a wooden box. Its current incarnation is the result of a re-imagination of several kiosks by Thomas Heatherwick, the inimitable designer behind London’s Routemaster buses and the 2012 Olympic Cauldron. Just behind the kiosk, the moulded red-brick and stone 9 Royal Court Theatre stands in stark contrast to the neighbouring concrete and glass offices. Dating from 1888, the building was designed by Walter Emden, a leading English theatre and music hall architect, who
also happened to design Liberty’s. Around the corner on Pavilion Road is 10 the flagship shop of David Mellor, the Royal Designer for Industry behind the modern traffic light.
A few minutes away on Sloane Street, the late-Gothic style 11 Holy Trinity Sloane Square church is decked out with sumptuous fittings, art nouveau ironwork and finely crafted stonework. Don’t miss the Great East Window, designed by Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris; it’s the largest window ever made by William Morris & Co. No wonder poet John Betjeman called the place the “Cathedral of the Arts and Crafts movement”. There’s more stained glass to admire in 12 Cadogan Hall, around the corner on Sloane Terrace. Originally completed in 1907 as a Christian Science Church, it’s now the home of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Don’t miss the beautiful stained-glass windows by Rosenkratz, who trained with Tiffany in NYC.
Now take a five-minute jaunt to 13 123 Sloane Street. Dating from 1777, this elegant Georgian building is one of the neighbourhood’s few surviving original Henry Holland-designed houses. The 1st Earl Cadogan leased the land to architect and property developer Holland, who transformed it from a notorious spot for highwaymen (complete with ‘Bloody Bridge’) into the first purpose-built highly fashionable ‘new town’.
Fast forward to 1888 as you walk along Cadogan Square, to see fine examples of the Queen Anne revival style by influential architects Richard Norman Shaw, J J Stevenson and Ernest George on the south and western terraces. Keep going towards 14 Pont Street and its pleasingly quirky, red-brick gabled houses. These tall houses, built by the same architects, were so recognisable that they prompted the term ‘Pont Street Dutch’. Finish your tour at the metal-and-glass 15 Embassy of Denmark, number 55 Sloane Street. It’s a lesson in modernist design from famous Danish architect Arne Jacobsen, the design visionary responsible for some of the 20th century’s most iconic furniture, including the Egg chair.
