We asked Steve Hunt, the architect for Cachet Mount Hope, to share his vision behind this unique style.

What is it about Hamilton, Mount Hope that required such a unique approach to architecture?
A
Context is important when developing a new community. Communities require an identity and a sense of place, this is best achieved when you reference the local character, features and history of the surrounding area.

What was your inspiration for Mountain Modern Architecture?
In the local context it comes from the development of the many rural and lake houses we designed in Southern Ontario. It is this transitional style that references the traditional character of homes in these natural environments but that also includes the use of contemporary elements and features.

We set out to establish an identity for this community that will give its residents a sense of place and belonging.

We want to ensure that Cachet Mount Hope is unique and will set itself apart from other new communities. As designers we look for points of reference and context in the design of our buildings and communities. In this regard Mount Hope was so named given its proximity to the Niagara Escarpment which of course has the oldest forest ecosystem and trees in eastern North America. It made perfect sense to develop an architectural style that refenced organic materials and textures and maximized natural light and views.

What materials were used to capture this unique style?
The influence of organic materials such as stone and wood is recreated through the use of modern and maintenance free materials available and desired by home buyers. Key to this style is the use of a variety of textures and patterns achieved with glass, metal, stone and simulated wood siding. Earth tone colours give warm undertones to our contemporary designs.

What are some of the unique design details?
We wanted to use iconic elements that reinforce one’s belief in what mountain modern is. This included the design of very large triangulated ‘chalet style’ window shapes, corner windows offering panoramic vistas, oversized rustic stone porch columns, and iconic chimney features. The strong horizontal lines created by lower porch and garage roof canopies accentuate the other elements to create more distinctive and dynamic architecture.

Vittorio Colacitti Brings his good taste home with two new restaurants. Part celebrity, part culinary genius, and all-out local cheerleader, restaurateur Vittorio Colacitti is earning his foodie fame as a major contributor to the skyrocketing Hamilton hospitality scene. Inspired at an early age by traditional Italian grandparents, one a chef, the other a farmer; plus, a mother who studied culinary school in Thailand, and a father who took him around the globe sampling exotic flavours - Vittorio’s destiny as a chef was already well-rooted. As Canada’s oldest and longest marked footpath, “The Bruce” Trail stretches from the Niagara River to the tip of Tobermory, Ontario, measuring more than 890 km long with over 400 km of side trails, some of which pass through Hamilton’s majestic escarpment.
Thanks to the magnificent geography of the Niagara Escarpment cutting through the middle of the city, Hamilton is home to over 100 waterfalls and holds the title as the “Waterfall Capital of the World”. Here are just five of Hamilton’s famous falls.
Famed as a world-class Canadian adventure on many hiker’s bucket lists, The Bruce Trail was instrumental in getting the Escarpment named a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve by the United Nations in 1990 (one of only twelve such reserves in all of Canada).

ALBION FALLS Considered the city’s most picturesque waterfall thanks to its majestic stepped shelves and cascades of rushing water, it is almost as wide (18m) as it is tall (19m).
TEWS FALLS Famed as the tallest waterfall in Hamilton, with a drop of 41-metres (second only to Niagara Falls).
TIFFANY FALLS An expansive 21-metre cascading waterfall, it’s also a local favourite for ice climbing during the winter.
WEBSTER FALLS Noted for panoramic views it’s Hamilton’s largest waterfall. Its classic curtain-style expanse of water spills over a tiered drop of 22-metres.

THE TUGBOAT PLAYGROUND Located in Pier 4 Park, kids love the 80-foot restored tugboat that’s fun to climb and explore. There’s also a great splash pad during the summer.
CONFEDERATION BEACH PARK This 93-hectare park is home to Hamilton’s most pristine beach and 4.3 km paved Beach Trail. “Do the Works” at Wild Waterworks and Adventure Village, an amusement arcade, and be sure to grab a bite at Barangas on the Beach.

HAMILTON MUSEUM OF STEAM & TECHNOLOGY Housed in a 160-year-old Waterworks, this National Historic Site preserves the oldest surviving Canadian-built, 70-ton stationary steam engines. Explore rotating exhibits and the miniature steam-run trains that run on a track throughout the museum park grounds.
HAMILTON & SCOURGE NHS The Hamilton and Scourge were merchant ships that were called into service for the American Navy and capsized in Lake Ontario. Designated a National historic site these shipwrecks are in remarkable condition resting 300 feet underwater, revealing rare artifacts of the time.

Located on the western tip of Lake Ontario and bordered by the forested ridge of the Niagara Escarpment, it’s Hamilton’s geographical proximity to major land and water transportation routes that helped write its story – one rooted in a proud industrial and military heritage. British loyalists settled here after the American Revolutionary War in 1784 and worked with Canadian militia during the War of 1812. In 1815, local politician George Hamilton purchased 257 acres of land and

As the world’s longest escarpment the Hamilton portion, in many places, is 100 metres tall. Spanning the entire length of the city, “the mountain” bisects the city into upper and lower regions, provides stunning views, is home to 100 waterfalls and is an important part of Hamilton’s history fueling its claim to mountain fame.

Niagara Falls is about an hour away, but why bother when you have more than 100 waterfalls flowing over the Hamilton Mountain. Exploring the falls is the perfect outing for day-trippers and weekend trekkers. Plus, many of the waterfalls are illuminated at night with colourful lights for a magical spectacle.
