Our deepest gratitude for your support and donations this past year.
For over 75 years, Cabrini has delivered quality and compassionate healthcare. Today, thanks to your commitment, we continue to grow and evolve — meeting the changing needs of our community with strength and heart.
This report holds heartfelt stories of patients and families who have experienced Cabrini’s care and have expressed their gratitude by giving back to Cabrini.
A key highlight of the past year was the Giving Day fundraising appeal in June 2025, when the entire Cabrini community answered our call and donated towards a new digital PET/CT scanner used for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. The appeal saw over $1.32 million donated in six weeks – smashing the original target of $800,000. This result means that the new scanner has been 100% funded by donors.
Together we’re future proofing the hospital. By 2036, more than 150,000 patients will look to us for healthcare every year. Many people will be over 70, in need of cancer, cardiac and orthopaedic care. To meet this need we are building for better: better access, better capacity, better intervention, better research, better treatments and better facilities.
The Next Era redevelopment at Cabrini Malvern will deliver all this and more. Through renovation of the existing hospital and the construction of a new building east of Coonil Crescent, we will ensure our community can access the care they need where and when they need it.
Together, we’re building a better Cabrini for you and your loved ones.

We sincerely thank the voluntary members of the Cabrini Foundation Board for their commitment to the work of the Foundation:
Ms Sylvia Falzon, Chairman
Prof Mark Frydenberg AM
Mr Francis Galbally
Ms Di McDonald
Mr Bob Santamaria

A group of Cabrini Foundation donors have invested in the latest technology, raising the bar for how patients with debilitating neurological and movement disorders are treated in Australia.

In a southern hemisphere-first, Cabrini neurosurgeons have successfully utilised new technology to deliver deep brain stimulation (DBS) implantation with sub-millimetre accuracy.
The new technology, combined with novel surgical techniques, allows for pinpoint accuracy when delivering DBS electrodes deep within the brain. This means effective treatment, faster patient recovery, and reduced likelihood of repeat procedures for patients living with Parkinson’s disease, tremor or involuntary muscle contractions (dystonia).
“This is a game-changer,” Cabrini neurologist Associate Professor Wesley Thevathasan said. “With deep brain stimulation, electrode placement is all about location, location, location. Now, we can reach even the smallest and most deeply located brain structures with confidence, which is great news for patients with movement disorders.”
With donor funds, Cabrini purchased the Stereotactic Ultralight System (SUSy) technology, which, when used with the intraoperative Airo CT scanner, means improved outcomes for patients.
Deep brain stimulation can have a transformative impact on patients’ lives, with significant improvements in motor function and quality of life. This new technology – performed for the first time outside of Europe, by Cabrini neurosurgeon Mr Kristian Bulluss – has additional patient benefits.
“Not only are we able to deliver the electrode with sub-millimetre accuracy – to brain structures the size of a grain of rice – there is also less chance of brain trauma, a reduced likelihood that a repeat procedure is required, and shorter operation times, meaning recovery post-surgery is better,” Mr Bulluss said.
For more than a decade, Lee and Brian Johnstone OAM supported medical advancement by creating the Auric Innovation Grant at Cabrini. With a deep commitment to innovation, they wanted to ensure Cabrini continues to evolve and deliver even better care into the future.
Lee has since moved into aged care and sadly Brian passed away in 2025. Their son Evan Johnstone is continuing their legacy by committing to continue funding the Auric Innovation Grant.
As a community-minded man, the SES and captain of his local CFA brigade, Evan understands the needs of non-profit organisations.
“Mum and Dad had a strong connection with Cabrini for many years, as regular patients and as donors. They also supported and advocated for people living with a disability, especially young people and their families. I want to make sure I continue the programs that they set up and keep the family legacy going. The Auric Innovation Grant at Cabrini is a key part of that legacy,” Evan shared.
The winning project for the 2025 Auric Innovation Grant is building a new bio-bank to grow cancer tumour stem cells and apply genomic testing, on samples taken from Cabrini patients.
These models are designed to accurately replicate how cancers behave and respond to treatment across genetically diverse populations. Through better understanding of cancer biology, the project will accelerate cancer drug development for specific cancer types and sub-types, reduce clinical trial failures, and enable more effective personalised treatment – patients receiving the optimal treatments for their specific types of cancers.
Led by Cabrini’s Group Director of Research Professor Gary Richardson OAM, the project brings together a collaborative team of researchers who are experts in the fields of genomics and stem cell research, coming from Cabrini in Melbourne, the Garvan Institute, the University of NSW and the University of Tasmania.

Thank you Evan, for your generosity in continuing Lee and Brian’s legacy. The Auric Innovation Grant will continue to advance research and innovation at Cabrini, benefitting generations to come.

Now more than ever, at Cabrini Malvern we are ready, with the latest digital PET/CT scanner. This vital piece of equipment gives cancer patients answers faster, so they can begin treatment sooner. And we couldn’t have done it without you.
With a group of generous matching donors standing by to double every dollar donated, Megan Potter, Director of Cabrini Foundation, sent an urgent call out to the donor community to support our Giving Day on 4 June 2025. “And they rose to the challenge,” Megan said. “It was a huge 24-hour fundraising marathon, ultimately raising $1.32M and I couldn’t be prouder of everyone who played their part in investing in our cancer program.”
Chief Executive Sue Williams echoed Megan’s sentiments. “Thank you to our incredible matching donors and every person who generously gave to this appeal,” Sue said. “We couldn’t do it without you.”
Facing a cancer diagnosis is distressing, and often begins with diagnostic scans. Each scan has a story, of patients and family members holding their breath to learn the diagnosis and what treatment will involve. Your generosity will help thousands of Cabrini patients navigating cancer.

A heartfelt thank you to our incredible matching donors - your generosity made this achievement possible.

With their lifelong devotion to faith, family and community, Robin and Barbara Mountain’s lives brought love and enrichment to many. Their “instant attraction” at a university camp started the two teachers on a journey of nearly 60 years of marriage. “From the time I fell asleep on her shoulder on the train journey home, we were constantly together,” recalled Robin.

A quietly spoken, humble man, Robin’s deep-rooted passion for learning and enquiry led him to the study of medical research reports. He became fascinated by the evolution of medical treatment through research. Robin never imagined this acumen would turn to the world of cancer.
Barbara’s story is one of courage, resilience, and hope in the face of an unrelenting battle with cancer. It began with the diagnosis of breast cancer – a fight she bravely faced with determination. Thanks to early detection and treatment, Barbara experienced a period of remission that gave her and her loved ones a precious sense of relief and hope.
But the battle was far from over.
Barely a year later, Barbara was confronted with a devastating recurrence: an aggressive second type of breast cancer that eventually spread to the lymph nodes. This was no longer just a localised fight. The cancer advanced, infiltrating her bones and becoming metastatic – meaning surgery and localised treatments could only do so much.

For 21 years, Barbara was under the continuous care of her medical team at Cabrini. “A/Prof Ian Haines and Dr Despina Handolias did a marvellous job over the years... through Barbara’s treatment, surgeries and two periods of remission. Cabrini became a huge part of our lives,” Robin shared. Sadly, Barbara passed away in 2024.
Motivated to become a matching donor for Cabrini’s Giving Day, Robin knew he could make a difference to cancer care for others.
“The chemotherapy can now be linked to PET scans and the administration of the drugs can be more accurately targeted and quantified. It’s as advanced as is possible today, compared to how treatment used to be. This new scanner will largely avoid people having adverse reactions to treatments… a lot of people will be positively affected,” he said.
Thank you, Robin - the legacy of your gift in Barbara’s memory will help Cabrini cancer patients for many years to come.
YOUR GIFT.
Your Cabrini
When you think of a stay at Cabrini, it’s often the nurses and healthcare professionals who come to mind. Their empathy, compassion and skill making sure you and your loved ones feel safe and able to heal.
Every year, 65 new graduate nurses join Cabrini’s 1,800-strong nursing team, to start their nursing career. Choosing the Cabrini Graduate Program is their first step to becoming Victoria’s best nurses. That’s why 80% of graduates stay with us beyond their initial program. With greater access to 1:1 teaching, ongoing professional support and opportunities to grow, they’re deeply valued.
Donor support allows our healthcare professionals to:
♥ attend international conferences, bringing new innovations back to their teams
♥ undertake post-graduate studies, to deepen and extend their knowledge
♥ continue to expand evidence-based practice and skills
♥ develop train-the-trainer leadership skills
♥ advance training in new technologies and therapies
♥ be valued and appreciated for the work that they do.
Group Director Nursing, Allied Health and Clinical Education Megan Mills emphasised the importance of your support: “Scholarships are critical to sustaining and retaining Cabrini’s nursing and midwifery workforce. Thank you - by investing in our team, we’re able to develop, motivate and retain the best health professionals,” Megan shared.

Pam and Lawry St Leger have been supporting Cabrini’s nurse scholarships program for 25 years, in memory of Lawry’s mother Jean. “We recognise how continued professional learning helps with patient wellbeing. This is what motivates us to continue to fund a scholarship; be it for a conference or as part of a university course… helping nurses learn and study increases their knowledge and skills, benefitting patients’ experiences.”

Above: Bryan Dorman (centre) with sons Nicholas (left) and Andrew (right) and grandsons.
The Dorman family’s connection to Cabrini runs long and deep: for three generations, Cabrini has been there for the moments that matter. Bryan Dorman recalls visits to his aunt living near the Malvern hospital. “Over 30 years ago we lived opposite Cabrini in Coonil Crescent. Every time one of the boys fell over, they’d pop into Cabrini to get repaired. Our three grandsons were born at Cabrini, which was a wonderful time and were all great experiences,” Bryan shared. “My wife Chrissy volunteered at Cabrini hospital and aged care… she used to run the poetry classes with the nuns.”
When Chrissy was diagnosed with cancer it rocked the whole family’s world. Understanding and navigating a cancer diagnosis, visiting hospital to see various specialists, and the different treatment schedules, can be overwhelming. Chrissy’s son, Nicholas Dorman recalls how Cabrini supported them during this time. “The culture of care and professionalism has always been the same at Cabrini. The caring, attentive, feeling of safety you get from their support and care…As a family, for the last five years, Cabrini has been a really big part of our lives.”
Sadly, Chrissy passed away in 2024. When it came time to honour Chrissy’s connection to Cabrini, the family spoke to Chief Executive, Sue Williams about funding a new nurse liaison role, dedicated to help others navigating a cancer journey.

The inaugural Chrissy Dorman Oncology Liaison Nurse has now commenced at Cabrini. Nurse Gemma is responsible for supporting patients and family members through their cancer experience, meeting the psychological, emotional and information needs of patients, carers and families.
Thank you to the Dorman family for your generous investment in establishing the Chrissy Dorman Oncology Liaison Nurse role and for supporting the Infusion Treatment Centre, a service central to cancer care at Cabrini.
YOUR GIFT.

An ageing population means that demand for our services will increase by 60% with over 150,000 patients to be treated each year, particularly in our leading services of cancer, cardiac and orthopaedic care.
Many of Cabrini’s buildings were built in the 1950s and 1970s with 20% of our beds in 4-bed rooms so we also need to convert multi-bed wards into single rooms.

We have expanded the Cabrini Cancer Institute to further prioritise research and double the number of clinical trials being accessed by patients.
By 2036, more than 150,000 patients will look to Cabrini for healthcare every year.
As a not-for-profit private healthcare provider, we rely on the generosity of our donor community to enhance and expand our services. You have the power to ensure Cabrini can continue to provide quality, compassionate care – for generations to come.
By transforming Cabrini Malvern, we will increase capacity, strengthen capability and future-proof the hospital.
This will ensure that we can attract the best medical specialists, researchers and other healthcare professionals to care for our patients.

Cabrini’s Next Era redevelopment includes the expansion of the Cabrini Cancer Institute within our Malvern hospital, allowing researchers and clinicians to bring pioneering cancer research closer to patients.
Cabrini aims to have 1,000 patients each year participating in clinical trials through the development of a new genomic research program which will align patients with targeted therapies that better match their genomic make up.
“Thanks to donor generosity, we’ve been able to launch a series of precision medicine research programs, designed to develop breakthroughs and deliver better health outcomes for all cancer patients,” oncologist and Group Director of Cabrini Research, Professor Gary Richardson OAM, said.
One such program is the Ovarian Cancer Organoids program, which is offering hope for the 1700-plus Australians diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year.
The Cabrini Cancer Institute, in partnership with Monash University’s Biomedicine Discovery Institute (BDI), is building Australia’s most extensive and only biologically comprehensive library of ovarian cancer organoids – 3D cancer models – which will help to shape the future of personalised ovarian cancer treatment

“We’re moving into an age of more targeted therapies that are designed specifically for each individual patient,” Prof Richardson said.
Cabrini Cancer Institute and BDI Papa Lab researcher, Dr Sylvia Mahara, said the new biobank will be accessible to researchers Australia-wide. “These organoids are valuable pre-clinical models to study ovarian cancer, particularly their response to different drug treatments,” she said. “They can mimic patientspecific characteristics, allowing us to test various treatment strategies to find what works best for the patient’s specific type of tumour. This could make a significant difference to their survival outcomes and quality of life.”
The transformation of Cabrini Malvern is our most significant project in impact and profile. We are fortunate to have already secured significant commitments from individuals and families keen to make their mark on the future of healthcare.
We welcome your involvement to become part of Cabrini’s future.
Your gift holds the power to transform Cabrini. With your generous support, we can look towards the future and the changing needs of healthcare to continue to provide the best possible care for patients, now and in the future.
You may wish to honour your family or friends by naming precincts, floors, dedicated spaces or rooms.
All gifts to Cabrini’s Next Era will be recognised and celebrated in various events, activities and publications and acknowledged prominently at Cabrini.

The Joe White Bequest is committed to improving the health outcomes for men at Cabrini through the power of philanthropy. Over the past four years, the Joe White Bequest has provided significant grants to Cabrini for the purchase of the latest medical equipment and technologies. These advancements are enhancing outcomes for many fathers, husbands, partners and sons receiving care at Cabrini.
Cabrini surgeons perform multiple procedures daily treating prostate cancer using robotics. A grant enabled the purchase of a second operating endo-telescope and accompanying ports allowing keyhole access via the patient’s abdomen.
Benefits include:
✓ smaller incisions
✓ more precise tissue removal
✓ faster recovery times

Cabrini treats an average of 1,300 patients each year for cancer of the bladder and ureters. If a tumour has formed, the patient will undergo surgery to remove it before it becomes more invasive. This laser allows surgeons greater precision, speed and safety in the removal of tumours.
Benefits include:

✓ laser therapy is a more targeted approach to destroying the tumour
✓ 20% reduction in procedure time
✓ reduced incidence of complications such as incontinence and impotence.
The intra-operative ultrasound is a key piece of equipment, vital during biopsies for suspected urological cancers, particularly for treatment of prostate and kidney cancers.

This new ultrasound features a builtin fusion capacity that merges an MRI image with an ultrasound image. During surgery, doctors match the abnormality seen on the MRI scan to a live ultrasound probe. This allows them to map the boundaries of the tumour and target lesions with more accuracy.
Benefits include:
✓ reduced risk of infection
✓ increased safety when compared with other methods
✓ significantly improved accuracy during surgery.
✓ better control and higher precision
✓ enables sparing of more healthy tissue and faster recovery for patients
✓ reduces the number of repeat procedures.
Urodynamic testing plays a crucial part in diagnosing and treating many urological conditions.

This state-of-the-art urodynamic chair improves patient experience related to bladder or urinary dysfunction.
Benefits include:
✓ accessibility - easy access and positioning of patients during testing
✓ comfortable and supportive - patient can be standing or seated
✓ safety - lightweight and easy to move ensuring patient safety.
At Cabrini, we believe compassionate care doesn’t stop at our hospital doors.
We are proud to offer Cabrini at Home—an innovative model of care that delivers hospital-quality care where many patients feel most comfortable: in their own homes.
