New area restaurants offer something unique for diners By CATHY SPAULDING

People hungry for good food around Tahlequah and Muskogee can find it in new restaurants and new formats. Four restaurants are prime examples. Roxie’s BBQ owner Tyler Wagers said people are lining up at the restaurant he opened earlier this spring along the Illinois River on State Highway 10. He said it’s the same unique barbecue his parents had when they opened a restaurant in 1951 – the same good ribs, same sliced beef, same chopped beef. “One thing that makes us unique is our barbecue sauce; it’s totally different from anyone else’s barbecue sauce,” Wagers said, adding that it’s a longtime family recipe he’s not willing to disclose. The meat is smoked with pecan and 6
hickory with a little bit of post oak. “We’re very consistent about what we do on a day-in, day-out basis,” he said. The location, under a bluff near Lover’s Leap, also is a draw. “We probably sell more food in the Tahlequah area and probably Muskogee area; we’re that busy,” he said. “We have 178 chairs, and we’ll have a line of 25 standing outside the door.” Although his parents had indoor dining back in the 1950s, Wagers said he never had an indoor location. He operated near a trailer park for four years before moving to the river. Roxie’s also offers a full bar and soon will sell the only “barbecue beer” in Oklahoma. “It will be our own label,” Wagers said.

People also come for the unique pickles, Wagers said. Anchors Up Bar and Grill on Lake Tenkiller specializes in what owner Caitlin Mackey calls “American food,” including burgers, wings and pizza. Mackey, her husband, and brotherin-law opened the restaurant March 6 in the former Piddles Cajun Bar and Grill. “Every Thursday, we have dollar wing night; that’s been a real hit. Fridays, we do $1.50 tacos, $6 margaritas and karaoke,” she said. Live music is offered Saturdays. Anchors Up recently started a Sunday brunch, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., with a “build your own Bloody Mary and mimosa bar.” Brunch edibles include breakfast pizzas and a breakfast sandwich. A “hangover burger” features a fried egg. The full-boat buddy features tater tots, smothered in gravy and topped with sausage crumbles scrambled eggs and cheddar cheese. Mackey said people especially come
for wings and burgers. Her brotherin-law hand-seasons each one. Onion rings are hand-battered, and fried mushrooms are beer-battered. “Everything we make is from scratch; nothing’s ever frozen,” she said. Two new Muskogee eateries found homes in landmark buildings. Watson’s Chophouse opened earlier this year in the pre-statehood McKibban Building, where Club Lunch operated for decades. Owner Damon Watson said Main Street Muskogee officials were looking for a downtown steakhouse. He was already operating barbecue and meat markets in Muskogee and Checotah when the McKibban Building came up for sale. He said the Chophouse specializes in beef, from 8-ounce filets to Japanese Wagu steaks, and 38-ounce tomahawk porterhouse for two. “Steaks are what we’re known for,” Watson said, adding that business has

“truly been amazing.” It’s not just steaks, however; the lobster soup also is popular. Watson is also is starting a Sunday brunch. The story of Harvey’s Hideout began with Philly Cheesesteaks in a food truck. People raved about them, owner Melissa Short recalled. “They’re about as close to authentic that you can get anywhere around here,” Short said. “We get our steaks shipped in from Philly.” The Shorts bought a 1915 building that originally housed a drug store and later housed Miss Addie’s Fine Dining and Momma C’s Soul Food Kitchen. They first opened Harvey D’s steakhouse, but many customers said they wanted a bar. They added a jukebox, pool tables and soon will offer live music. Harvey’s Hideout now offers a small menu until 2 a.m. “We just brought back our cheesesteak by request,” Short said.

Tahlequah, surrounding towns have festivals to entertain everyone By LEE GUTHRIE

From peaches to chili to celebrating the Illinois River, Tahlequah and surrounding towns have a festival for any taste, and several are planned in the summer and into fall. The 59th annual Porter Peach Festival, held July 17-19 in Wagoner, has the usual tasty treats made from local peaches, tractor pulls, catfish dinner, classic car show, culinary contests and a 5K run. For those who love a good beauty pageant, this festival offers a chance for young women to compete for Little Miss Peach, Miss Peach Bud, Miss Peach Blossom, Miss Peach, Miss Peachy, and the People’s Choice. 16

Tunes and Spoons Chili Cook-off happens Aug. 22-24, in Claremore at the Expo Center. Organizers Howard Pollack, Terry Harvey and Brad White are excited about this year’s event. It is sanctioned by the International Chili Society and is a municipal event and a chili festival. Claremore has previously put on this event and the city asked the three of them to help revitalize it, Pollack said. “It is meant to bring positive impact to the area, and was originally rehashed by the late Tito Jackson, who passed away in September 2024,” Pollack said. “Tito

lived in Claremore.” Harvey was Jackson’s business partner, and he said that while Jackson was on tour in Mexico, a tornado hit the city last year. “Tito was performing in Mexico during the tornado, and he saw it on CNN, and when he flew back to Claremore he toured the devastation and he wanted to give back,” Jackson said. “The proceeds with the resurrection of the festival were meant to get uniforms for first responders and help for tornado victims.” The group is committed for at least five more years on this festival, Pollack said. Tunes and Spoons came about from Jackson’s involvement in the reviving of the lapsed chili festival and expanding it to include the music festival, Harvey said. on Friday night, George Thorogood on Saturday night, and Super Freak on Sunday. “One of our objectives, including Tito’s, is to help local musicians get in front of big crowds as well, so all the other slots are filled with local or regional artists, like Jake Tankersley, who was on The Voice,” Pollack said. This is a free event to the public, with a kids’ zone, car show, local and regional vendors, food trucks and a beer garden. Diamond Stone Music Festival is scheduled for Sept. 18-20, at Diamondhead Resort on State Highway 10, with a pre-party Sept. 17. “Preparty tickets can be purchased on line at diamondstonefestival.com/ home,” said Daniel Tye, coordinator of the festival. “The pre-party is an early entrance into the festival, and you can camp a day early – as early as noon. Music starts at 5 p.m. and goes
until late.” Tye said this year’s lineup features over 30 acts. “We will be giving tickets away to the festival on our Facebook page, Diamond Stone Music Festival, and we have some exciting plans,” Tye said. “The final lineup will be posted closer to time of the festival. We are really excited to have some neat music on the Illinois River – bringing in professional productions – so there’s really great lights and sounds.” Diamondhead Resort Manager Ben Orwin said there will be music on the stage in the bar and on the stage by the river. “We have 65 acres of camping; 17 motels rooms, and two bunk houses and each sleep 60 with four rooms – 15 per room,” Orwin said. “And we have two private cabins and 75 RV and tent spots.” Blue Note Music Foundation is planning the annual Bluenote Roundup 2025, scheduled for Sept. 4, 6 p.m. through Sept. 7, noon, at Sparrow Hawk Camp, 21985 N. Terp Float Festival is back for the fifth year at Diamondhead Resort, and Orwin said because the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians now owns Diamondhead Resort and is a federally recognized tribe, no marijuana can be sold on the property during this event. “Picture three days of live music, floating down the river with your crew, camping under the stars,” states the ticket sales site about the event. “There’ll be amazing food trucks and good vibes. Whether you’ve been with us since year one or this is your first float, you’re in for an unforgettable weekend full of music, nature, and a whole lot of fun.” Although there will be over 100 vendors at Terp, due to the restrictions on cannabis, they will only hand out the swag for their businesses and sell legal products, Orwin said.
The 45th annual Bluegrass & Chili Festival is Sept. 5-6, is coming to downtown Tahlequah. Three stages will feature free concerts by national and regional artists, states a release provided by Dell Davis. Some of the headliners are Grand Ole Opry member Rhonda Vincent and The Rage, the Cleverlys, Authentic Unlimited, The Grascals, and The Edgar Loudermilk Band. Sister Sadie, an award-winning all-female group, and the Goodwin Brothers are also scheduled to perform. These are just a few of the numerous bands and musicians that will entertain chili eaters at this popular festival. The Festival Street Market at the chili festival includes crafts, services and business showcases. The Open Car Show and Antique Tractor Show are popular favorites, and this year expanded activities include rug making, blacksmithing and hay bailing.

Rocklahoma 2025 promises to bring louder music, stronger community ties and a renewed focus on fan experience during its return to the Pryor Creek Music Festival Grounds this Labor Day weekend. The three-day rock festival, now in its 18th year, runs Aug. 29-31, with a lineup that includes more than a dozen bands making their Rocklahoma debut. It’s also the first year Vision Savage Media will lead all marketing operations, a shift owner Mike Savage calls a major milestone. “We’ve done content for years, but this is the first time we’re running all marketing,” Savage said. “It’s a dream come true.” Headliners were selected based
on availability and budget, Savage said, with an emphasis on both longtime fan favorites and first-time performers. One standout for Savage is Alice Cooper. “I’ve seen him before, but now I get to experience it with my 16-yearold son, who plays guitar. That’s going to be special,” he said. Fans can expect performances from an eclectic mix of rock icons and rising stars. In addition to Cooper, the 2025 roster includes Disturbed, A Day to Remember, Halestorm, Clutch, Skillet and Coal Chamber. With nearly 50 acts across three stages, Rocklahoma will deliver its signature blend of hard rock, metal and classic glam, attracting fans of all generations. vendor, Vivenu, is handling passes this year. Organizers are also focused on lowering water and alcohol prices in response to inflation and fan feedback. “Prices have gotten out of hand, and times are tough. We want to help where we can,” Savage said. The festival is returning to a 2023-style operational model, which Savage described as more effective and better received by attendees than changes made in 2024. “If you had a good experience in 2023, this year will mirror that,” he said. Beyond music, Rocklahoma plays a significant role in the local economy. Hotels, restaurants, gasoline stations and retailers in Pryor see a surge in business during the festival weekend. “It generates more funds for Pryor than Christmas,” Savage said. “Everybody’s out shopping, eating and enjoying. It’s a great thing for the town.” The event also supports charitable causes, including veterans groups and the Born and Raised Foundation.

Vision Savage Media has pitched a documentary for Rocklahoma’s 20th anniversary to highlight the festival’s economic and cultural impact. Planning for an event of this scale is year-round. Teams are already working on bookings for 2026, with departments focused on logistics, accounting and safety. “It never stops,” Savage said. “It just gets busier as the event gets closer.” While Rocklahoma began with a focus on hair metal, it has evolved to include more contemporary acts, while keeping its glam rock roots. “Musically, we’re holding the course. There’s still that hair band element, but we’ve added more modern acts, too,” Savage said. For him, one of the most memorable moments came from a previous Rocklahoma when his wife filmed Poison – her favorite band as a teen –from the stage. “The look on her face was like a kid at Christmas,” he said. “Rocklahoma isn’t just a concert. It’s a community people look forward to all year.”
