Manchester City Centre Development Model

Architectural Concept Model
inspired by Frank Gehry Scale: 1:100

Materials and Processes:
The organic shape was modelled in Blender and then split up into flat sections which could be laser cut from acrylic. These were glued and aluminium strips placed over the top.
The MDF base was CNC machined into a two part, male and female wave pattern. The copper sheet was then annealed and pressed between the two MDF sheets using a fly press.

Materials and Processes:
Much prototyping and testing was carried out on this model especially regarding the electronic circuits and spring mechanism. The main materials used were acrylic, styrene and PLA. A mixture of laser cutting, vacuum forming and 3D printing were used to construct the model.

Materials and Processes:
The keel, bulkheads and decks were laser cut from 6mm birch plywood, whilst the hull segments were 3D printed in PLA. The rigging was also laser cut from solid rubber strips. The masts were made from wooden dowel and the sails were cut from plastic sheet material and then painted using a stencil.
This project required a lot of testing and prototyping to discover the viability of using magnets and to discover the correct tolerances between the different pieces.
