Program Notes
Tonight’s Global Rhythm percussion concert, featuring the BYU Panoramic Steel Band, is a vibrant celebration of popular music through the lens of the steelpan. The program opens with a traditional soca tune, honoring the authentic Caribbean roots of the instrument. As the evening progresses, the ensemble demonstrates the steel drum’s remarkable versatility across a spectrum of musical genres, including reggae, calypso, jazz, ska, and rock.
The concert’s culmination is a special tribute to "America’s Band," the Beach Boys. This performance honors the legacy of lead singer and songwriter Brian Wilson, who passed away last summer. In memory of Wilson’s influence on music history, BYU commissioned a steel drum medley to celebrate the sounds of the Beach Boys.
We thank you for joining us this evening and for your continued support of the performing arts at Brigham Young University.
