Artini The Bossier Civic Center was transformed into a Big Top Experience for the 12th annual ARTini “Cirque du ARTini 2022” This annual Bossier Arts Council fundraiser encompasses culinary, musical and visual arts by having local mixologists compete for the Best Signature martini in town. The circus themed event offered hand painted martini glasses, live music from Hallow Decks, circus performers, fire breathers, stilt walkers, jugglers, aerial performers, appetizers, and over 20 unique martinis to sample. The Missing Link won the People’s Choice and Judge’s Choice award. Lyons Pride Coffee took home the Most M’ARTisinal Award. Glass Painting at Bossier Arts Council Bossier Arts Council hosted a Glass Painting Party at their Downtown Bossier

location. BAC asked artists and community members to help paint martini glasses for their annual ARTini event and fundraiser. The Bossier Arts Council welcomed anyone 12yrs of age and up to let their creativity flow during this free event. Everything was provided including the martini glasses, the paints, brushes and refreshments. Volunteering an hour of time was a fun way to meet new people and feel connected to the community. 1. Shreveport Derby Day The Shreveport Derby Day was held on the immaculate grounds of the David Toms Academy known

as “265.” Shreveport Derby Day is a vibrant outdoor celebration of the Kentucky Derby. Guests arrived in traditional Derby Style attire with their finests hats, bow ties, summer dresses and seersucker suits. An open bar featured mint juleps served in a complementary engraved julep cup/mule with a linen napkin. Red roses adorned all of the tables and tents. Guests socialized, danced, played lawn games, “bet” on their favorite horse with complimentary raffle tickets and watched the live showing of the Kentucky Derby. Mess with the Bull “Mess with the Bull” was the 2nd annual Azalea Drive Street party. L.E. Chalk and Whisk Dessert Bar hosted the event with the help of Pinpoint Events. his month we will be looking into the fascinating world of permanent and semipermanent cosmetics. That’s right, my lovelies, we are talking about TATTOO MAKEUP…but this is not your grandma’s permanent cosmetics.

OPTIONS

The industry has grown and evolved in a huge way with tattoo makeup being one of the hottest trends in cosmetic enhancements these days. As a permanent makeup artist five times certified with over six years’ experience in the industry, I’m here to tell you that long gone are the days of painful, harsh lines and ashy tones. The reason we call it semipermanent is because we no longer use traditional tattoo inks, which have heavy metals in them anchoring the pigments to the skin, which makes the ink last years longer. When they do fade out, those heavy metals are trapped under the skin, reflecting light, and they can leave you with a multitude of colors, such as blues, pinks, greens, and oranges.

Water-based pigments that don’t have the same life span as tattoo ink tend to fade faster, so if you ever decide to let them fade out, they will eventually fade right back to a natural, neutral skin tone. No matter what area you want to enhance, it is imperative that you rigorously research the facility and the artist performing your service. You should always check before and after photos, ask how long they have been performing their services, ask to see their stateissued license from the Health Department, read any reviews you can find online, and, if possible, go in for a quick consultation with your artist, which in many cases is offered complimentary. Look into pre- and postservice care regimens because aftercare is so important in achieving your desired results.

The most popular service is brows, and there are a few techniques available to create different looks.

Microblading uses a manual hand tool to create tiny strokes replicating the look and growth pattern of your brow hair. Powder Brows uses a delicate tattoo machine to create the illusion you took the time to softly fill in your brows with a brow powder. Precision Brows uses a delicate tattoo. Lip Blushing

This is achieved by tattooing a soft, beautiful liner around the natural lip line and then softly feathering it inward towards the center of your mouth to create an elegant, beautiful wash of color. Most artists have a kaleidoscope of colors to choose from. And by mixing pigments, an artist can create a custom shade similar to a client's favorite lipstick.

Lip Blushing lasts from one to three years, and I’ve personally seen up to five.

Lip Liner

Lip Liner is another cosmetic enhancement performed much in the same way as a full lip blushing. The difference is that a bolder line is created around the perimeter of your lips and the color is not feathered in as much or as far, creating a soft yet pronounced lip line.

Eye Liner

Permanent Eye Liner is one of the scariest services to receive— that’s no surprise. Having someone close to your eyes with a tattoo machine can be quite nerve-racking, but believe it or not, it is actually one of the easiest and most comfortable services to receive. Most clients say they were scared for no reason and experienced little to no pain. But keep in mind that everyone’s body and pain tolerance is different. There are a variety of techniques an artist can use to achieve your desired effect, and that’s completely based on your artist.

hether you’ve been dating for a few months or you’ve been married for years, there will come a time when you need new activities for date night. Luckily, romantic date night ideas don’t have to be extravagant—you can have fun home date nights that are even better than any fancy dinner at a restaurant or night out on the town. These at home date night ideas are perfect for couples looking for fresh, casual (and affordable!)

1. Play a Board or Card Game. Break out Trivial Pursuit, Monopoly or Scrabble. Play some Gin Rummy or War. A little friendly competition is always healthy for any relationship.

dward Nader is a man of modern design. It’s evident in the layout of Nader’s Gallery on Kings Highway. It’s evident in the clean lines of the furniture and accessories he designs. He doesn’t seem like the type to stick a message from a fortune cookie on his refrigerator. That is, until you read it: “Great things are accomplished only by the perfection of the minor details.”

It’s more than a fortune. It’s more than a mantra or a mission statement. It defines Nader. “The devil is in the detail,” Nader said. That attention to detail has guided Nader through 40 years of expanding Nader’s Gallery beyond a small framing shop into a furniture and home accessory and design center with global reach. Well, that attention to detail and a strong working relationship with his sister Margaret. “I know a lot of siblings can’t necessarily work together,” he said. “But Margaret and I are both in the same brain. We’re both very Type A. We’re both very organized. We’re both very meticulous. We’re of the same mindset, so it’s been very successful.” Margaret said the relationship has worked from childhood, despite an eight-year age difference between them. “When he was little kid, I was like an extra mom to him,” she said. “I was pretty protective. When we started in business together, we had the same ideals. If we have a job to do, we just do it. That’s worked out really well.” The shared mindset goes back more than 40 years of sharing the business. It’s a family tradition for the Naders. “I always had an engineering brain,” Edward said. “I would always revisit things and rework things.” He blended that engineering mind with an artistic eye. “I always had a level of aesthetics,” he said. “One of my older sisters sent me card I had sent her. I was describing my suit I was wearing to someone’s

confirmation. I was 6 or 7 years old. I used to go to JC Penney’s. I had my own salesman there. It was Mr. Hamm. I was telling her it was double-breasted. I was telling her what I was going to wear with it. So, I was always kind of aesthetically drilled in.” Nader said his left-brain/ right-brain balance comes from the blending of his mother’s and father’s influences on his life as a child. “My mother had a ridiculous level of style,” he said. “And she was the smartest woman you would ever know. She was ridiculously creative. There’s a lot of creativity in our family. Our mother was so intelligent. You would have a conversation with her in her mid-90s, and she would tell you what was happening on the Hill, what’s happening in any world politics, she would tell you what was happening here locally, and she could tell you where Madonna was. It was crazy because she was that kind of person. She was so amazingly well-rounded. I think without a doubt I got that from my mother.” Nader learned his business acumen from his father, who was a salesman for Glazer’s Beer and Beverage. “When I was 14, I wanted a stereo,” Nader recalled. “I asked him to loan me the money. He said, ‘No, you’re going to go to the bank and get a loan.’ I was like, ‘No, I am not.” He taught me the importance of credit. He took me there and made me take a loan. He taught me that if you get this loan, you pay it back and you pay it back early. “My father taught me the importance of being solvent. That’s what he always drilled in me. Keep yourself debt free and you will always have the money when an opportunity comes to do what you need to do.

That’s one of the strongest things about the success of our business.” Nader went to LSU Shreveport to study accounting. He soon realized he didn’t like numbers that much, so he got a degree in marketing and management. He started to pursue an MBA. That’s when he decided it was time for a change. “I was really bored with it,” he said. “I was 20 years old, and I was kind of bored in Shreveport. I was getting ready to move. I got a one-way ticket to London, put my car for sale. I was leaving.” SBMAG.NET

in the furniture business. That’s exactly how he wants it. “When you brand yourself, like Martha Stewart, the trajectory of your life changes. I love what I do, and I am very happy knowing that when people stop and talk to me, they want to stop and talk to me, and not because I am a big deal. That’s always been a huge turnoff for me. I can name 10 friends who branded themselves. They are still great people, but they have no time for a regular life.”

His mind was set on traveling. Margaret had a good job with the state. That’s when their parents asked the children if any of them wanted to take over the frame shop. “Margaret’s husband at the time talked us into doing it,” Nader said. “I said I’d do it for a year. What did I have to lose?” The siblings decided to purchase the business. That was 1983, and this is 40 years later. Edward and Margaret mastered the framing business in 1,000 square feet. Edward got certified by the Professional Picture Framers Association, and their reputation grew. Through those 40 years, the store and its product offerings have expanded with every new challenge Edward embraced. “We started doing all these commercial jobs,” he said. “Once we kind of mastered that, I got bored. I get bored easily. So, then we brought in accessories and that sort of thing. Then lighting.” “We’d always kind of do a little bit of design work here and design work there, but then we began to bring in more things — more accessories and more furniture. As that continued to evolve, I always painted a little. But I was never considered a professional artist. I’d sell a piece here. I’d sell a piece there. It was really all for my own enjoyment. As time went on, I began to paint a little bit more. I just kind of continued to build on one more thing.” After years of going to market to buy inventory for the store, Nader built relationships with all of the major furniture manufacturers. They would ask his opinion about their pieces. Before long, Nader picked up another interest. “We would talk, and they would say, ‘Let me show you our new stuff. What do you think of this?’ I’d say, ‘It’s beautiful…Why don’t you do the legs a little more like this. Or why don’t you do a radius or a bullnose on top?’ And they’d say, ‘That’s a great idea. You should be doing this stuff.’ That’s how my furniture design came about.” Nader’s designs are manufactured and sold around the world. But his is not a household name

Nader is grateful to David Gebhart, CEO of Global Views, which manufactures some of Nader’s designs. Nader said it’s a relationship built on one common interest. “He does such detail to the last degree,” Nader said. “The finishes are perfect. There is nothing that’s not perfect. The reason he is grossly successful is that nothing leaves unless it’s perfect. Nothing is good enough with him. It’s perfect. That’s one of the things he loves about me.” And while Nader’s designs are worldwide, his roots remain close to home. Three Shreveport institutions that the Naders enjoy supporting are The Cathedral of St. John Berchmans, St. Joseph’s School and Loyola College Prep, where Margaret’s children went to school. The Naders have restored 19th century Italian paintings of St. Ignacious Loyola and St. Francis Xavier that had degraded and now hang in the church again. The also restored Charles M. Schulz’s original drawing of Snoopy that the cartoonist allowed the school to use as its Flyers mascot. The Naders also support the Shreveport Regional Arts Council and other area nonprofits. “We built a business from scratch,” Margaret said. “We worked really hard, and we believe that if you give, it comes back to you fourfold. It makes us joyful and happy to give back. We’re willing to do what we can to help people.” Edward said it’s a matter of preserving community, just like preserving art. “We’re very committed to Shreveport,” he said. “You’ve got to give back to your community. You’ve got to continue to carry your own community or it will slowly degrade.” “I have had the opportunity to leave Shreveport on numerous occasions. People ask me all the time, ‘Why are you still here?’ My family is here. My friends are here. It’s hard to leave this community. It’s easy to live in. You can’t moan and complain about it if you don’t try to make a difference.”

There’s a sense of coziness.” The result is a space that perfectly balances out the neutral-colored walls. Other standout features include the granite countertop on the island and the backsplash behind the stovetop. Establishing Whole Home Control Technology was very important in this home’s design. Bailey, along with Matt Hollowell with Electronic Interiors, was able to seamlessly integrate smart technology throughout the home, starting in the driveway and leading all the way through to the landscaping in the backyard. Essentially, every room provides audio, temperature, and lighting control. “I wanted to ensure I had the basics already installed when the home was built, but also leave the door open for upgrades and further integration.” Creating an Outdoor Attraction The rear covered porch—with plenty of room of living space—is divided into two sections: a cooking area and a sitting area. It wouldn’t be a true Southern house without somewhere to watch the world go by. “Typically, you see an outdoor living room attached to the main living room and an outdoor kitchen attached to a kitchen. We flipped that notion and set the outside living room right behind the kitchen,” Bailey says. The furniture can easily withstand the elements, while low-maintenance flooring mimics the look of hardwood. Centering the hangout zone around the fireplace keeps the space inviting year-round. A fire pit and pool lie just beyond. The space is perfectly designed for not only weekend cookouts, but any type of outdoor event. Between the outdoor kitchen, the lounge area on the patio, and the fire pit, there are plenty of places for guests to gather.

rom waterfalls to koi ponds, garden streams to birdbaths, here’s a list of all the best backyard bubblers, gurglers, and soothers. These are just a few water features associated with tranquil, idyllic outdoor spaces. You might, however, be surprised to find out how they impact your home’s value.

A manicured lawn, colorful flowers, and stylish patio furniture all make for a pleasant exterior, but they don’t necessarily help your house standout from any others in your neighborhood. Give your landscape design a boost by adding a water feature. In addition to being a pretty thing to look at, there are many benefits to including a water feature—like a garden creek or small pond—in your landscape. Water is soothing to the senses, it adds texture to your yard, and can buffer noise pollution. Whether you have a big or small space, there are different ways you can incorporate a water feature. Keep reading to see ideas for how a water feature can elevate any yard. 1. Garden Creek. This one will take a bit more work, but a babbling garden creek is a wonderful backyard water feature to make you feel like you are right in the forest. This water feature is ideal for larger backyards and for homeowners who want to incorporate something into a large portion of their yard.

2. Splash Pad. If your kid loves running through sprinklers, then you can easily upgrade backyard water adventures with your very own splash pad. Splash pads at home have the same appeal of a splash pad you would find at a water park, but there isn’t any required transportation since you are already at home! Splash pads can be a good alternative to swimming pools because they are safer, cheaper and much easier to maintain. 3. Outdoor Shower. The ultimate water feature is one you can step right into. A backyard shower provides a liberating alternative to your daily shower routine and lets you extend the pleasure outdoors.

4. Koi Pond. If you have the space and resources, consider building a tranquil koi pond. You’ll want to make sure you have enough space, so the pond is large enough to allow fish to live comfortably and grow. Koi eat plants, so you will need to add non-toxic plants to the pond, such as water lettuce, water lilies and other floating floras. If you don’t want to maintain the pond to the point of keeping koi, you can also use a number of different pond designs minus the fish.

5. Bird Bath. This is one of the simpler and easiest to maintain water features which also attracts wildlife into your outdoor space. A bird bath doesn’t have pumps, filters or costly installation. It’s a budget-friendly way to add a water element to either your front or back yard. Bird baths come in in various colors and shapes, so you are sure to find one which fits your home’s style. 6. Fountain. Fountains are a good way to add some water into your landscaping. Fountains typically come in kits, so they can be installed with ease. These are also available in a variety of styles and sizes to fit your needs. If you love the sound of moving water, a fountain is a great addition that is still easy to maintain. If you place your fountain in the middle of the garden, birds can enjoy it. You can also keep it next to a window or patio and enjoy the soothing sound. Consider installing this feature in a prominent area of your yard like close to your front door to greet visitors and guests. There are almost endless options with a fountain. Some designs include pipe fountains, spouting fountains and disappearing fountains. There is even one called a ball fountain and doesn’t require much setup. Fountains will typically fit into any sized yard. 7. Waterfall. A waterfall is a great way to incorporate some movement into your garden. Concrete, rocks and fiberglass can be stacked to create a path for water, while grasses, succulents and flowers make great additions which add some color. Pondless waterfalls are great for smaller backyards. These are also low maintenance and can be designed with plants and stones for a natural look. For a more modern feel, you can create a staircase waterfall, which can be created to fit any size yard.

Every water feature will experience water loss and evaporation. The amount of water loss will depend on the water feature, along with the amount of sunlight and the temperature. During any hot spells, additional water will need to be added to counteract evaporation. In order to check the water level, open the skimmer mouth. The ideal water level should be set at about ¾-inch below the top of the mouth. During the fall and winter, as leaves start to fall, you may need to empty the debris basket more often. If you live in an area where water freezes, you will need to decide if you want to keep the feature running or winterize it. The best time to perform a pond cleanup is early spring. To clean a water feature, drain it, then use a garden hose to rinse the gravel and rocks. Start at the top and work down to the bottom. Turn on the clean out pump to remove the dirty water. Once the bottom begins to look clear, remove the pump and begin filling the water feature again. Water features add plenty of style to any yard. Some water features are more functional than others, such as a splash pad or a bird bath. However, no matter which features you choose, it is important to maintain them, especially during colder weather, providing you with years of enjoyment out of your outdoor living space. Regardless of what you choose, adding a backyard water feature to your home can be a great way to promote relaxation, peace, and even being one with nature. Before spending a huge chunk of money on a permanent water feature, it’s best to run your plans by an experienced landscape architect, contractor, or maybe even a real estate agent. Any one of these professionals can help you gauge your proposed water feature’s impact on your home’s marketability.

8. Water Wall. Not to be confused with the waterfall, a water wall is a great way to transform a drab wall into one with character. This is a great feature for smaller yards that want to incorporate something beautiful into the landscape. Backyard Versus Front Yard Features There are water features that are typically more appropriate for a backyard setting, instead of a front yard. Anything designed with relaxation and tranquility in mind should be considered for your backyard. You probably don’t want company relaxing by your koi pond in your front yard or your kids partaking in a splash pad. However, some water features compliment any outdoor area. For example, a fountain or bird bath work well in both the front yard and backyard. Maintaining Water Features While some water features are easier to maintain than others, there are several things you will need to know, along with seasonal considerations. With most water features, you will need a skimmer, and its parts, in order to keep the surface of the water debris free. A debris basket will be the first line of defense inside the skimmer. This will collect any debris, such as leaves or twigs, that blow or fall into the water. It doesn’t take long to empty the debris basket.

hy do your rooms look so pulled together?” “How do you know which items to put into a room?” “How do you mix antiques with more modern pieces?” These are just a few examples of questions I receive on a regular basis. My answer is pretty much the same every time. Only purchase pieces you love, edit your accessories to highlight main pieces, and make certain there are “unifying elements” throughout your home.

So, what are unifying elements? Basically, there are five unifying “tips” to use throughout your home to give it a more

Shapes. Let’s say you have a round coffee table. Take this shape and mix it throughout your room. It could be with an accent table, rug, pillows, or artwork. It doesn’t really matter what item it is as long as it’s round or roundish.

Finishes. This is one of my favorites. In this example, I’ll use gold/brass since it is currently popular. Let’s say you are redoing your kitchen. Your hardware, lighting, and faucets should all be in the same tone. They do not have to match perfectly but should all have a gold or champagne finish. You can also carry this over into your barstools and accessories. There are multiple other tricks of the trade, but these few tips should help all you do-it-yourselfers out there. You’ll become a true believer once your friends have showered you in accolades.

This article will be the “cliffs notes” version but should give you a pretty good idea of their meaning and how to apply them. Color. Use the same or similar toned color(s) throughout your home. It is perfectly fine to paint each room in your home a different color, though this is tricky to accomplish without looking garish. However, if the colors are in the same tone and your crown molding is the same color throughout, then you should be good. This ribbon of color penetrates each room and ties them together. I would highly recommend more muted, softer palettes rather than vivid. The brighter the color, the more difficult this is to achieve. Pattern/Print. Let’s say you have a rug with a Greek key border. If that same or similar pattern is repeated on your drapes, pillows or wallpaper, etc., then your space becomes more cohesive. Also, by re-introducing the pattern, you can introduce new variations or colors of it. Theme. Easy Sneazy Japaneezy. Let’s say you have a favorite chair, and this chair is covered in an Asian-themed print. Simply introduce other items like an antique, brass lamp with a dragon on it, Asian toile pillows or wallpaper, or accessories with an Asian vibe throughout your room. The key to this is knowing when to stop. Remember, too much of anything is too much! SBMAG.NET

ummer is officially here, and skin is in! With summer comes the heat and humidity that take a toll on your skin. Increased heat and sun exposure can worsen melasma or increase pigmentation. Heat congests pores and leads to breakouts. Sun exposure breaks down collagen, causing aging.

Now is the time to re-evaluate your skincare routine and get started if you don’t have one. It can be as simple as a cleanser and a sunscreen but picking the right ones for your skin type is very important. Here are some tips to help pick the best products for you!

If Your Concern is Pigmentation There are different types of pigmentation from sun spots to melasma, but the root cause of both is sun. The best way to prevent pigmentation is with a quality sunscreen, and the American Academy of Dermatology recommends a minimum SPF 30. In addition, Board Certified Dermatologist Dr. Skylar Souyoul recommends using a sunscreen that provides physical protection from the sun. These have an active ingredient of Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide. PREVENTION Avoid heat and direct sun and know that hormones can worsen it. Using a high quality, potent Vitamin C daily can help prevent oxidative damage that can lead to increased pigmentation. SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF is great for individuals with combination skin types who want to focus on preventing pigmentation. Regular Vet Check-ups: Keep an eye on your senior pet’s health with regular vet visits. Most vets recommend taking an older dog in for checkups once every six months. Regular vet checkups will help detect any health issues early or might even prevent them altogether. Spend Time with Your Pet: Most importantly, make sure your pet gets lots of love and affection from you. Strengthening that special bond with your pet will help keep them healthy and happy. There are different resource thresholds that you have to meet if you are married or single. Medicaid does not pay for Assisted Living in Louisiana. Can the government take my house if I need nursing home care? In Louisiana, Medicaid does not force you to sell your house if you enter a nursing home for your care. The house is an exempt asset as long as you intend to return to it to live should your health improve, or if your spouse or dependent lives in the house. Once both spouses have died, Medicaid may try to recover the expenses they paid for you or your spouse from your estate. You can plan ahead to avoid estate recovery. Does Medicaid still have a “look-back” period for transferring property before going into a nursing home? Medicaid has a five year look-back period. If you apply for Medicaid while in the nursing home, you have to report any gifts or transfers of your assets within the five years preceding your Medicaid application. If you gifted or transferred any money or property during the look back period, you will have a period of ineligibility where Medicaid will not pay for your care at the nursing home, unless the transfer meets one of the exemptions allowed by Medicaid. The key to successful planning is to find qualified professionals to assist you and to start planning well in advance of needing long-term care. Senior LIVING Did you know that approximately 45 million Americans are age 65 or older? And by 2030, it is predicted that 73 million Americans will be age 65 or older. BY ELIZABETH DEAL, ADAM BAILEY, ISABELLE ROGERS

By 2034, the U.S. population will be comprised of more older adults than children. APPROACHING RETIREMENT For some, retirement is a time of relaxation and freedom. Others fall victim to boredom or feeling without purpose. You may want to play golf all day or you may want to get another job. But as you prepare for this stage, here are a few things to keep in mind:

•

Take advantage of the benefits of retirement planning, financial planning, and estate planning.

•

Review the financial implications of a planned retirement date.

•

Review the financial implications to determine your best age to begin collecting Social Security.

•

Learn the deadlines and associated penalties for signing up for Medicare.

•

Be aware of the differences between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage Plans. This can affect what services are covered, what co-pays are due, and coverage restrictions, etc.

•

Contribute the maximum possible to retirement plans.

•

Consider Life Insurance and Long-term Care Insurance policies. Note that some Life Insurance policies make accelerated death benefit payments to help pay for longterm care.

•

Develop a plan for how you intend to spend your time.

•

Create a budget for living and recreational expenses.

In a recent survey, 59% of older Americans said they plan to delay retirement. 52

KEEP THE MIND AND BODY MOVING It’s important for seniors to stay active after retirement. For the mind. Stay connected socially as much as possible. Take continuing education classes. Volunteer. Play card or puzzle games. Read. Garden. Learn new things. Take a dance class. Try a new hobby. Get another job. Join clubs or online groups of people with similar interests. Just keep doing what you love! For the body. Make maintaining health a priority. Eat nutritiously. Get regular sleep. Have regular doctor visits, annual bloodwork done, and eyes and hearing checked. For minor health issues, take advantage of telehealth services where you can speak to a doctor or nurse online. Exercise. Seniors that exercise regularly are more likely to be able to maintain their independence. Regular exercise helps older adults have the ability to walk, bathe, cook, eat, dress, and use the restroom. Research has shown that it’s important for seniors to do exercises for endurance, strength, balance, and flexibility. Some recommended exercises include:

Walking Water aerobics Strength training with dumbbells Resistance band

Workouts using body weight Pilates Chair exercises or chair yoga

And being able to maintain balance is critical. Every year, 1 out of 3 older adults fall, yet less than half tell their doctor. Every 20 minutes, someone in the U.S. dies from a fall. Besides those deaths, falls can cause knee or other injuries, or severe injuries like hip fractures or brain injuries that leave a person bedridden. And that can spiral into problems like depression or pneumonia.

The best route is to start with a doctor visit, who can refer the senior to a physical or occupational therapist or medical equipment supplier. The suppliers have experts to size the equipment properly and provide training on proper use. Plus, equipment costs may be covered by insurance when prescribed. For seniors to live at home comfortably and safely, some of the following home modifications may be considered:

Installing ramps or railings where needed and bars in the shower Installing walk-in showers or tubs Making clear pathways by moving/removing clutter or furniture or securing area rugs Placing often used items in easy to reach locations

Other types of daily living activities related to independent functioning are called instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) and typically refer to the following types of activities with long-term care:

Caregiving may be provided by a spouse, adult children, friends, neighbors, or professional caregivers.

Also, seniors may benefit from having certain items handy, like pill boxes, jar openers, flashlights, magnifying glasses, and medical alert devices, etc. Save all receipts from equipment or home modifications for possible reimbursement or tax purposes. ARRANGE FOR TRANSPORTATION Driving helps older adults stay mobile and independent. Older adults generally practice safe driving behaviors like wearing seat belts, driving when conditions are safest, and not drinking and driving. But the risk of being injured or killed in a traffic crash increases as people age, due to declines in vision, cognitive functioning, or physical changes. According to USAging, about 600,000 older adults stop driving each year. This can negatively affect their health and well-being because they become unable to independently go shopping, to doctors appointments, to social events, and more. Family members and caregivers often provide transportation, but professional services, non-profit organizations, and non-emergency medical transportation are some other options available. A good place to start for free services is a local council on aging. Gogograndparent.com is an example of a business to look into. There are costs and fees, but they can transport seniors without needing to use a cell phone or app, and they notify family members of their location. WHEN EXTRA CARE IS NEEDED There may come a time when yourself or loved one needs some extra help. Nearly 70% of adults 50+ believe that they will need assistance with their daily activities as they get older, yet fewer than 30% have given serious thought to how they will continue to live independently if they need such assistance.. Other sources of help include technological devices that can provide assistance or even various community services geared at helping seniors. Living at Home. Most seniors want to live independently in their own home. This requires being able to manage home maintenance, housecleaning, yardwork, housework, meal preparation, taking medications, or paying bills, among other things. Caregiver support from friends, family, or professionals may also be needed. Some people choose to downsize to a smaller home or apartment to lessen the load. A home can also be modified to help a senior live their comfortably and safely. Living with A Relative/Family. Seniors who need assistance with daily activities and some health care support (non-skilled) while having the companionship and care provided by living with a family member(s). Independent Living Communities. Active, independent seniors may like to rent or buy a home/apartment in a community with other seniors. Many of these communities offer gyms, clubhouse, yard maintenance, housekeeping, security, transportation, laundry service, group meals, or social activities. Assisted Living Communities. Seniors who are still relatively independent but may need some assistance and caregiving with their daily activities such as meals, dressing, bathing, help with medication and transportation may like an assisted living community. These communities may offer rooms or apartment rental, group meals, social activities, exercise, laundry services, or housekeeping. Nursing Homes. Seniors who require a living environment with medical surveillance and caregiving but don’t need a hospital or have checked out of a hospital may need this type of environment, typically for chronic conditions or short-term rehabilitative care. Nursing staff is on-duty 24 hours a day. Roughly half of the adults 50-plus in a recent AARP survey believe that Medicare covers care in a nursing home or care in their own home from a home health aide but it generally does not. Palliative and Hospice Care Services. Certain organizations are dedicated to supporting people dealing with terminal illness. Palliative and hospice care offer distinctly different services, but both encompass a philosophy that aims to make patients as comfortable as possible. Palliative care, or supportive care, addresses symptoms and side effects of serious illnesses, but most often cancer. Typically, palliative care is provided as an additional layer of support as a person goes through curative treatments, often addressing the emotional and psychological aspects of illness for the patient and their family. This type of care provides comfort and reduces pain. People receiving it can still try to cure their condition, such as through chemotherapy or surgery. Hospice care only takes place after a person stops seeking curative treatments. Hospice care does not necessarily mean imminent death as some people assume, but it’s a way to embrace life and get much-needed support for patients and families. The goal is to provide comfort for the individual when doctors no longer deem recovery likely and are seeking quality of life over quantity of life. Both types of care can take place at the individual’s home, a retirement community, a nursing home, or in a hospital. Some hospice and palliative care organizations offer inpatient units for when patients need additional support. FOR CAREGIVERS Caregiving for a parent or spouse can be difficult both physically and emotionally. There are many decisions to be made about transportation, recreational activities, personal safety, meals, medical care, finances, and more. Caregivers are often required to help with ADLs. And it can be hard for an individual to handle the overall decline in physical and mental vitality, standard of life, and emotional well-being of a close loved one. The goal is to keep their best emotional, mental, and physical well-being at heart. Balancing caregiving with work and other family obligations can be stressful, and the most difficult part is often the demand on their time. Stress can negatively affect your health, well-being and ability to provide care. Tend to your own needs for exercise, sleep and healthy eating and take advantage of respite care services or offers from friends. Find ways to reduce your stress

and make sure to take time to have fun! If you take the time to care for yourself, you often return to your responsibilities renewed and better able to provide care for your loved one. Caregiver support is available. Trust - a fiduciary arrangement whereby a grantor/trustor gives a trustee the right to hold and manage assets for the benefit of a specific purpose or person. Power of Attorney for health care – legal document determining who will make health care decisions if an individual is unable to do so. Power of Attorney for finances - legal document determining who will make financial decisions if an individual is unable to do so. Living Will - a written, legal document that spells out medical treatments you would and would not want to be used to keep you alive, as well as your preferences for other medical decisions, such as pain management or organ donation. Advance directives - guides the choices that will be made by family, caregivers, or doctors if a person is terminally ill, seriously injured, in a coma, in the late stages of dementia or near the end of life. Do not resuscitate (DNR) and do not intubate (DNI) orders – these are not required to be written legal documents but should be conveyed to the doctor and family.

Government Benefits Find information on over 1,000 benefit and assistance programs covering health, disability, income, and more. benefits.gov Area Agency on Aging Area Agency on Aging is a federally mandated agency in a parish or city. These are go-to resources because they know all about senior programs and services, including available funding sources, in their respective areas. They can help determine eligibility for their programs like personal care, housekeeping, meal delivery, and respite care for the caregiver are often among the available services. Don’t ever give out your account numbers, banking information, Social Security number, address, or personal information if asked via phone, text, or email, unless you have initiated the conversation and you know to whom you are speaking. Scammers can have a caller ID that matches the official number of an organization, and they can imitate voices well. If you ask for their number to call them back, they will usually give up and hang up.

Be aware of phone scams regarding Medicare or offering free medical equipment. If a caller ever asks you to verify your Medicare ID number, do not give it to them. Medicare never makes unsolicited calls or visits to your home, so never entertain someone pressuring you to accept anything that’s “free.”

Don’t open suspicious texts or emails or click on links from people you know, companies you do business with, or strangers. Sometimes accounts, such as Facebook or Twitter, can be hacked, and the person or company contacting you is not who they say they are. If ever in doubt about a message you receive, always reach out to the person or company to verify they have contacted you.

Beware of emails or texts alerting you that one of your accounts (Netflix, PayPal, utilities, bank, etc.) has been suspended or canceled or you need to change your password. Scammers can fake an email address and logo. Contact the business in question through the official means listed on your account.

Don’t fall for the phone scam that tells you one of your loved ones or grandchildren is in trouble or in jail and needs money, or worse, pretends to be that person. Ensure your loved ones are safe by contacting them directly, and never give personal information or money to unknown numbers or people.

If you “meet” someone online or on dating apps, always meet them in a public place for your first in-person meeting. Never give out your financial or personal information other than your name.

•

Beware of scammers who will feign romantic interest in you and slowly gain your trust if you are single, divorced, or widowed. They will typically get to know you and then begin to fabricate requests for money as time goes on. For example, they may ask you to help cover medical expenses or say they need money for food, clothing, etc.

Apps like Venmo or CashApp allow you to easily transfer money to others and request money too. Do not fall for the trap that someone has “accidentally” transferred money to you. The scammer uses a stolen credit card to “transfer” the money, and you will be sending your own money back. Contact the app’s support team and block the person’s account.

Many of the p o s t-Wor l d War II babies who once struggled to simultaneously care for their elderly parents and their schoolage children are now considered elderly themselves – at least by census standards. Currently at 22 percent, the segment of senior adults falling into the 60+ age bracket continues to increase. Decisions about Medicare, Social Security benefits and long-term care can be confusing at best, but it’s questions such as these that make the 50-year-old Caddo Council on Aging (CCoA) more relevant than ever. And although often considered synonymous with their much-appreciated Meals on Wheels program, the Council on Aging offers much more than a daily dose of nutrition to local seniors, according to Executive Director Monica Wright. From a humble first-year budget of just $35,000, the Caddo Council on Aging’s annual funding has grown to approximately $4 million in federal, state and parish dollars supplemented with grants and donations. In additional to Wright and a modest number of paid staff, a strong volunteer base also makes meal deliveries, counseling, referrals and other programs possible. That long list of programs and resources offered by the CCoA meets seniors where they are – in their own neighborhoods, often in their own homes, with what they need to make their lives better in the long run. “We have seniors’ best interests

in mind,” says Wright, who notes that while a percentage of the agency’s clients are physically challenged, others are still healthy, vital, and actively seeking means to stay in their homes and making their own decisions for as long as possible. The CCoA motto “We Can Help. Just Ask.” sums up their operation. A phone call to the organizations’ Buckner Square office can connect seniors and their families with these, among other, programs. •

In-home services that can assist with acquiring groceries, housekeeping and personal care. This assistance can include monthly food boxes and vouchers for fruit and vegetables through local, participating farmers markets.

•

Respite services that provide short-term, temporary relief for over-burdened caregivers who attend to home-bound seniors. Standard informational paperwork is required to obtain this service.

•

Information and assistance on a plethora of seniorliving topics. Calling themselves the “Go To” source, CCoA employees are in-the-know about other local agencies and what they can offer as far as physical and monetary assistance and other senior needs.

•

The Ombudsman program providing advocates for seniors in long-term care facilities. According to Wright, the advocacy may involve interacting with care facilities or the seniors’ own families as needed.

•

Meals on Wheels — perhaps the CCoA’s most widely known program. Five meals per week are delivered to homebound seniors who cannot shop and cook on their own. An estimated 1,400 meals are served each month.

•

Senior Centers scattered throughout Shreveport and Caddo Parish. These neighborhood centers offer safe, heated/air-conditioned places for seniors to gather for fun, activities and social interaction. A meal similar to those served to Meals on Wheels clients is available at most of these centers each day.

•

Legal advice, counseling and representation. In some situations, representation by an attorney or other attorney-supervised person can be secured to assist seniors with legal matters.

The Covid-19 pandemic severely cut into the agency’s volunteer base, according to Wright, who notes the agency is actively recruiting individual, corporate and group volunteers who have a heart for caring for the elderly. Volunteer opportunities vary. For example, delivering Meals on Wheels involves only about an hour each week. A company or group might take one day each week and rotate participants. How can you help? A call to the Caddo Council on Aging offices at 318-676-7900 can put readers in touch with staff members who can assist seniors and their families with the Council’s resources as well as opportunities to volunteer. we age, lack of physical activity and a waning social life can cause depression as well as other health problems including high blood pressure and a heightened risk for early death. However, seniors who maintain a physically and socially active lifestyle gain benefits that enhance their physical and emotional health, and their ability to remain independent well into their twilight years. Research displays physical activity to be a protective factor for ailments such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and some types of cancer. Further, it is associated with improved cognitive and emotional health, as well as improved quality of life. But how much exercise is required to acquire these benefits? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend seniors exercise with moderate intensity activity such as brisk walking, at least 150 minutes a week (30 minutes a day, 5 days a week) or 75 minutes a week of vigorous intensity activity such as hiking, jogging, or running. They further recommend strength training, and activities to improve balance such as walking heel-to-toe, Tai chi, or yoga at least 2 days a week. Physical activity can be performed in many forms including walking, dancing, swimming, and sports such as tennis. Additionally, activity levels can be increased daily by doing things like taking the stairs or parking a bit farther from your destination.

While exercise is extremely important for better health and quality of life, the connections we make with others and the relationships we continue to build also have a major impact on our overall wellness. Harvard Health stipulates social connections “influence our long-term health in ways every bit as powerful as adequate sleep, a good diet, and not smoking.” The National Institute on Aging reports that being socially connected is consistently associated with biomarkers of health, in particular, lower levels of interleukin-6, a protein associated with conditions including Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, and osteoporosis. Yet, keeping an active social life may become more difficult to do as we age. Older adults may stop socializing with others for a variety of reasons, including the death of a spouse, fear of falling, lack of transportation, or impairments like vision or hearing loss. Scientists have found that seniors who stay socially active tend to live longer because of the physical and mental stimulation that occurs with having an active social life. Another benefit of staying socially connected includes better cognitive function. Activities performed in a social environment keep us mentally stimulated and sharp, and this is important to prevent the onset of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. According to Psychology Today, staying connected with others also helps maintain sound emotional health, because it releases “feel good” neurotransmitters in the brain (i.e. serotonin/dopamine), which in turn help to ward off depression. Further, studies

show that seniors who stay connected with others have healthier immune systems, as socialization appears to bolster our immune function. In addition to these health benefits, staying connected with others provides a sense of purpose and belonging. What are some ways to get better connected and increase your social life? Here are just a few examples:

•

Join a class/club. Book, gardening, or dancing are a few examples of classes and clubs that can increase social engagement. Joining a club/class is great way to meet new people and enjoy the company of others who share your interests.

•

Engage locally. Check out your local community or senior center, or your local public library. Many offer free or lowcost classes and events.

•

Volunteer. Volunteering in your community (hospitals, community shelters, etc.) allows you to meet new people as well as provides a boost to your self-esteem and offers a sense of purpose.

•

Learn something new. Many colleges and universities provide classes designed specifically for seniors that stimulate and expand the mind.

•

Stay digitally connected. Even if your loved ones are not close, technology can allow you to connect with them frequently. You can stay in touch with family and friends via social media (Facebook, Instagram) FaceTime, or email.

Staying physical and socially active is important throughout our lives; however, it becomes even more vital for individuals 65 and older, as it can assist with longevity, emotional health, and quality of life. However, maintaining an active physical and social life may be challenging as we age due to physical ailments such as arthritic pain, or emotional conditions like depression. It is important to remember, although counter-intuitive, that both physical and emotional conditions can be improved by becoming more active and increasing our connection with others. Doing so can assist with keeping us mentally sharp, and physically and emotionally well. athy Graham Nickell has been writing at least as early as for the C.E. Byrd High School and Baylor University newspapers. Now Nicholls, a Shreveport native and Houston resident, is an award-winning children’s author. Nickell’s early career included working as a report for The Shreveport Times, a contributing writer for 318Forum. She also did public relations work for The Plastic Surgery Center, Schumpert Medical Center, LSU-S, and Highland Hospital. Nickell earned her journalism degree from Baylor and Master of Arts in Liberal Arts from LSU-Shreveport.

She later moved to Houston to work as a writer in the Development Office at Baylor College and Medicine and married her husband Kevin Nickell, M.D. They’ve raised four children in their blended family. She was a stay-athome mother and school volunteer for several years and then got back into writing when she was hired to research and write a history book on the Institute for Spirituality and Health at the Texas Medical Center, a nonprofit organization in Houston. When writing this nonfiction book, she says she “was struck with many made-up fiction story ideas, particular those for children’s books.” And so began her foray into that genre. The inspiration for her first children’s picture book published in 2016 was art cars, which are all over Houston but not seen too often in northwest Louisiana. “The idea for Arthur Zarr’s Amazing Art Car hit me like a zap of lightning, and I rushed home from my morning carpool drive to write the story,” says Nickell. So, what is art car is? Car artists (“cartists”) take a vehicle and modify it by covering it with all different forms of art. Most are owned and driven by their creators, and if it’s their only vehicle they are known as “daily drivers.” Most art car artists don’t have artistic training but make their own creations. Most cause any passerby to smile! Nickell has spoken at over 100 schools and libraries throughout Texas, Louisiana, Georgia. In June she visited five different library branches throughout the Bossier Parish Library system and spoke to about 100 children. “I had no idea that writing and publishing a children’s book would lead me into this fantastic career of speaking and presenting at elementary schools and libraries. It’s been a wonderful adventure, and I hope to keep creating more books for kids,” says Nickell. The kids were able to listen to her speak about writing, creativity and inspiration, and then each child went outside and got to see a real art car! Paul McRae of Houston brought his whimsical art car “RIBBONS” to Shreveport to accompany Nickell to her presentations. His design was inspired by the abstract artform of drip and pour painting. The design also represents the ribbon of a typewriter, because his father and grandfather were both accomplished typists; his grandfather owned McRae Typewriter Exchange and repaired the machines for most of his life. One of the other sources of inspiration was the Dr. Seuss book, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go.” An art car is quite a conversation starter and as a daily driver, McRae has made new friends all over (similar to Arthur Zarr in the book!).

Nickell loves being able to make the subject matter real for the students. “At all my speaking events, I always arrange for a real art car to come. As I like to say, ‘I bring the field trip to you.’” Nickell published a second book in 2019 called Yazzy’s Amazing Yarn, and it also has a whimsical outside-thebox artistic theme about a hobby called “yarn bombing.” You won’t find typically find this type of art inside... What’s next? More trips to schools and libraries in the Ark-La-Tex (and beyond). And Nickell is moving into the publishing phase of a book she wrote during the pandemic shutdown. ustin Marshall’s daughter, Jaila, plays competitive basketball, but they found there were no training facilities in the local area where she could practice and play. So Marshall was inspired to open a basketball facility, and he has done so with the largest basketball gym franchise in the United States, PickUp USA.

This Shreveport location will be the first PickUp USA gym in the state and will feature two full basketball courts and a fitness room with weights and cardio equipment, along with shooting machines and vertimax training devices. Marshall, who also owns the local GEICO franchise, is serious about investing in our community and being a good steward for our city. “Vision is a function of the heart,” he says. He can see how this facility will have a positive impact over the long-term. He wants to provide a safe place for the

vast number of positive youth and teenagers in our area who are looking for an outlet through the game of basketball. He’s excited that parents will be able to watch their children train if they want to, or maybe join them on the court. And he wants the gym to be accessible and used by all age groups. Marshall anticipates that skill development from experienced trainers will promote the growth of the game of basketball in our area. Marshall says he has entrusted an excellent team to handle the day-to-day management of the gym. o be the capable adults life requires us to be, it is vital that everyone takes regular personal time to rest, relax, and regroup. This personal time, or “me” time, allows the mind and body to get a break from the demands of everyday life. Taking time to do something we enjoy or to just do nothing at all is a form of self-care and self-love.

For parents, this valuable alone time is often pushed aside or sacrificed to fulfill the needs of the family. In an article published by the New York Post, a study showed that parents have less than an hour every day to themselves and many parents must hide from their kids just to get that breather. Being an adult is challenging, and when you add raising a family to that equation, any strong man or woman can breakdown or burnout when they aren’t given the opportunity to recharge. Often, parents feel guilty for admitting that they need time to themselves, but there is absolutely no reason to feel guilty or ashamed. In fact, practicing self-care is one of the greatest acts of love and devotion that any parent

can give to their families. It shows that you are aware that your mind and body need the proper maintenance so that you can be the best parent that you can be. Children don’t just need parents; they need healthy parents who are mentally and emotionally available. Personal time helps us be effective parents, spouses, and humans. It allows us to detach and gather ourselves so that we can keep pressing forward.

One of the main things to remember about self-care is reminding our children that we love them just as much as we love ourselves, if not more. Kids don’t always understand what alone time really means and why it’s necessary. They may feel that they’re unwanted, unloved, or annoying because parents need time away from them when that’s farthest from the truth. Kids don’t always understand that it’s not them, but they’ll blame themselves anyway. They don’t always understand that work is stressful, or bills are a mountain to climb. All they know is that mom or dad doesn’t want to be around them. Start by let your children know that sometimes life itself is a heavy load to bear and we all need a break to come back to center. Lisa Damour, clinical psychologist and contributing writer to the New York Times, suggests when parents explain why they need alone time to say something along the lines of, “When I’m with you I really want to be able to focus on you, so I need to do some mental housekeeping and I do that on my own. That way I can be much more present when we’re together.”

Practicing self-care can be a learning opportunity for the whole family. Parents should take the time to explain to their children the importance of private time for mental health and even encourage their children to practice their own self-care time. Practicing regular self-care doesn’t always have to mean a full day at the spa, spending lots of time or lots of money. Your alone time should be spent doing something that helps you slow down, relax, and feel like a person again. Here are a few ideas for self-care time: Ƚ Ƚ Ƚ Ƚ Ƚ Ƚ Ƚ Ƚ Ƚ Ƚ Ƚ Ƚ Ƚ Ƚ Ƚ

Listen to your favorite music. Exercise. Meditate. Read a chapter of a book you’ve been trying to finish. Go shopping alone. If you like cleaning, do your favorite chore. If you like cooking, cook your favorite food(s). Have a conversation with a friend. If you have a hobby, take some time to work on your craft!

So, take time to rest, relax, and regroup without guilt. It will do both you and your kids some good!

TEDDY ALLEN INDUCTED INTO LOUISIANA SPORTS HALL OF FAME Acclaimed North Louisiana writer Teddy Allen was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame on June 25, 2022, as a recipient of the 2022 Distinguished Service Award in Sports Journalism from the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. Distinguished Service Award in Sports Journalism recipients were chosen based on nominees’ professional accomplishments in local, state, regional, and even nation circles, with leadership in the LSWA as a beneficial factor. Three decades of work in the profession is a requirement looked at by the 40-member Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame selection committee. Distinguished Service Award winners are inducted in the Hall of Fame along with the 455 current athletes, sports journalists, coaches, and administrators that have been chosen since 1959. Only 69 leading figures in Louisiana’s sports media have been honored with the award since its inception in 1982. Allen earned his bachelor and masters degrees from Louisiana Tech University. He worked for the Shreveport Journal and The Times in Shreveport, and for the Times-Picayune in New Orleans. He was previously a featured columnist for Gannett’s north Louisiana papers over the last three decades. He returned to Louisiana Tech in 2008 as a writer and editor in the university communications department. He has done radio broadcasting for Tech sports has served as a master of ceremonies for events at the university and for the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony for the better part of the last two decades. His many awards include Associated Press Sports Editors National Feature Writing award and the LSWA Story of the Year, Columnist of the Year, and Sportswriter of the Year awards, among others.

THE ART OF QUILTING Formed in 1983, the Red River Quilters is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the education and enlightenment of persons interested in quilts and the art of quilting. BRF OPENS STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITY BRF has opened a state-of-the-art new $19.5 million, 23,000 square foot Center for Molecular Imaging and Therapy (CMIT). CENTENARY COLLEGE STUDENTS EXCEL IN INTERNATIONAL FLASH FICTION CONTEST Centenary students Lillian Breaux, Hannah Jordan, and Anna Jane Storms were named as finalists in an international flash fiction contest sponsored by the College’s sister university in France, Université Catholique de Lille. Storms, a native of Ruston, won third place in the contest for her French-language story, “Attendre en hiver chaud (Waiting in the Warm Winter).” Participants were asked to submit a short story or poem on the theme “Tomorrow’s World” in a language other than their native language. “The fact that Centenary placed three students among the finalists in an international fiction contest in French speaks to the quality of a Centenary education,” said Dr. Dana Kress, professor of French at the College. “Anna Jane’s prize is even more impressive when one considers that L’Université Catholique de Lille opened this competition to all its exchange partners across the world, including 546 of the best universities on the planet! ith only four main ingredients, this Peach Arnold Palmer is a fun, fruity drink perfect for parties, brunch, warmer days, and more. This peachy tea is absolutely delicious. Fresh peaches are best for this recipe, but you can use frozen if needed; do not use canned. With readily available fresh ingredients, this comes together in 5 minutes. This recipe can be easily doubled to make more, or you can add your favorite liquor to spike this flavorful drink.

Squeeze half a lemon. Reserve the juice. Cut the peach into slices and remove the skin. Place the peaches into a blender and add the lemon juice, chilled black tea, and simple syrup. Add more if you prefer a sweeter taste. Blend all ingredients together. Strain through a mesh strainer and place in a pitcher with ice.

8 fresh peaches peeled, pitted, and sliced into wedges 1/4 cup white sugar 1/4 cup brown sugar firmly packed 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice 2 teaspoons cornstarch 2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup white sugar 1/2 cup brown sugar firmly packed 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 12 tablespoons cold unsalted butter cut into small pieces 1/2 cup boiling water 3 tablespoons white sugar

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. In a large bowl, fold the peaches, 1/4 cup white sugar, 1/4 cup brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and cornstarch until all ingredients are well combined. Pour fruit mixture into a 9X13inch baking dish. Place in a preheated oven and bake for 10 minutes. While peaches are in the oven, mix all the cake topping ingredients, except the boiling water, in a medium bowl. Use a pastry blender to cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture looks like a coarse meal. Pour in the boiling water and stir just until the mixture comes together and is just mixed through. After the peaches have baked for 10 minutes, pull them from the oven and drop large spoonfuls of the dough topping over the peaches. Evenly sprinkle the top of the dough with the 3 tablespoons of sugar. Place the baking dish on a cookie sheet, in case the cobbler bubbles over and drips, and bake for 30 minutes or until the topping is golden and baked through and the peaches are tender. Serve and enjoy. Add a scoop of ice cream for extra flavor! SBMAG.NET

(Don’t confuse that with the day the bathroom floor caved in. Another floor, another story…) Right now, that noise you hear in the background is my new best friend Randy in the kitchen tackling a plumbing problem that begins under the sink and above the floor, and ends under the sink and below the floor. Randy is my new BFF because it all comes back to plumbing and I will grab his ankle and be dragged to his truck, begging and crying like a small wet child, if he tries to leave before it’s fixed. (He didn’t.) The reason a grown man like me would do that is because if the plumbing backs up inside your body or inside your house, the world stops until it’s fixed. Same for the prince or the pauper. Plumbing is key.

hen someone knocks on your front door, they never say, “Is anyone house?” They ask, “Is anyone HOME?”

And if no one answers, you hope they’ve asked the right question. Because you don’t want this to be the front door to just your house. You want it to be the front door to your home.

But just because an old cast iron pipe leaks and needs to be replaced by modern PVC doesn’t mean I’m going to give up on this old house. My parents didn’t throw me away and get a new kid when I was 3 and broke my leg. They just got my leg fixed. Same with plumbing or air conditioning, which might be the only modern convenience to top plumbing. (We’re working off the theory here that you can go outside to the bathroom but you can’t just wish your way into solid air conditioning.) The first week in June, the AC “went out” here. (“Went out” sounds like the AC just needed a break and went to the club for some downtime. “Going out,” your AC said, checking its eyeliner in the mirror by the door. “I’ll be back when I get back.” Took three days and long hot nights before The Part came in and home was a cool place to be again. We are buying wood and brick and pipes and machines when we buy a house; things will break or rot or get backed up. But if we live in a home, those imperfect days will be part of our Home History.

There’s a difference.

“Remember when we had that hole in the house for a weekend when the plumbing messed up? Remember when the AC broke and we hallucinated and didn’t sleep for three days? Remember when we got the bill and I wet my diaper twice?...”

“Honey, I’m house!” Of course, you’re not, you nut. You’re home. “Honey, I’m home!”

Good times. Craftsmen build a house, restore, and repair a house. Realtors and home furnishings pros can make it fit you just right.

Even if you’re spouse hits you with a list of problems long as your leg and the dog starts dating your shin and you haven’t even closed the front door yet, at the end of the day, Dorothy was right: There’s no place like home. I have friends and in-laws who are local realtors, who know about all things house and home. The best ones introduce you to houses that fit your personality and needs. Then it’s up to you and yours to make it a home. Life being life, there will be bumps along the way. I love the home we began to make four years ago; not quite as thrilled about the house. We knew going in that there would be some things to fix due to cost-cutting and shade-tree carpentry from the previous owners. Their ideas were well-intentioned; their result, not as much. I knew this for sure the day the kitchen floor caved in.

But you have to build the home. Even if the going is tough sometimes, remember: Home wasn’t built in a day. Home is not where the couch is. Home is not where the pool is. Although it helps, home isn’t even where the icebox is. Home is where the heart is. Especially if things flush right and the air conditioning works.
