Byrna was created by an avid group of gun owners. Like many responsible gun owners, we didn’t know how quickly we would be to pull the trigger when confronted with a potential threat. If we hesitated – would it be a fatal hesitation? And if we didn’t hesitate – would we be making a fatal mistake? We wanted a less-lethal option that we could add to our arsenal that was safe, effective, and reliable.
The problem was that there was nothing available on the market that could stop an assailant from a distance and was easy to carry on a concealed basis. Most compact less-lethal weapons, including everything from stun guns and batons to pepper sprays and electroshock devices, are severely range-limited. By the time the weapon is effective, the situation has escalated out of control. The .68-caliber projectile launchers that were available at the time were simply re-purposed paintball guns. As such, they were large and bulky and had serious limitations because they were never designed for self-defense.
So, we decided to create a small handheld device that had the form factor of a gun, could fire multiple rounds, was accurate
up to 60 feet and could effectively and reliably disarm and disable an assailant. The result was the Byrna HD, which we launched in the summer of 2019. Since that time, Byrna has sold over 750,000 Byrna handheld launchers to ordinary citizens, private security professionals, and law enforcement officers. The Company has since expanded into all things “personal self-defense” including less-lethal rifles, body armor, bullet-proof backpacks, aerosol sprays, personal security alarms and, most recently, less-lethal 12-gauge rounds.

The biggest challenge in creating Byrna pistol launchers was to pack enough stopping power into such a small piece of real estate. If the launcher could not easily fit in a glove box, purse, or jacket pocket, it might not be available when it was needed most.

The Byrna pistol launchers needed to have ample stopping power. Our goal was to give ordinary citizens the ability to disarm, disable, and deter a would-be assailant without causing permanent injury or death, in order to give them and their family time to get out of harm’s way.

With most .68-caliber launchers, the CO2 cylinder is punctured when it is loaded into the launcher. Over the next 24 hours, the CO2 will leak out, rendering the weapon inoperable. In response, Byrna developed its patented first-shot, pull-pierce technology. This allows the CO2 cylinder to remain in the launcher, unpunctured, until needed. Then, when the trigger is pulled, the CO2 is punctured and the projectile is fired simultaneously, meaning that the Byrna launcher is always at the ready whether it has been sitting for a week, a month, a year, or several years.
DISTANCE EQUALS SAFETY
With batons and stun guns, you are in hand-to-hand combat before they are effective. Even with pepper spray or an electroshock device, you are range-limited to 10 to 15 feet. By then, the situation has escalated out of control. All Byrna Pistol Launchers have a 60-foot effective range.
MULTIPLE SHOTS
Byrna’s handheld pistols carry up to 7 rounds in a magazine and can fire multiple magazines from a single CO2 cylinder. Electroshock devices, by comparison, are limited to just one or two shots. The ability to fire multiple shots without reloading allows the user to put multiple rounds on target and/or confront multiple threats simultaneously.

The Byrna launcher is NOT a toy. It is a very sophisticated piece of technology. Whereas a traditional handgun has approximately 35 parts, the Byrna has more than 110 parts – and unlike a handgun, it must hold air at 800 psi. In developing the Byrna Pepper, Byrna Max, and Byrna Pro-Training rounds, Byrna’s R&D team took great pains to engineer the outer shells to be sufficiently frangible so that they would easily break upon contact with the target (even when wearing puffy clothing), while ensuring that they would be strong enough not to crack or rupture in the launcher. This required the introduction of circumferential break lines and a “variable wall thickness” design.

MAXIMUM CLOUD FORMATION AND HANG TIME
Regardless of the potency of the round, if the powder does not form a large enough cloud or hang in the air long enough, the effect of the chemical irritant will be muted. Byrna has worked to develop a payload that is both extremely potent and exhibits maximum dispersion characteristics. Because of the cloud formation, these rounds can disable the intended target even if the projectile does not hit the suspect directly. The 12-gauge shotgun is the most common home-defense firearm in America, with an estimated 30–50 million owners. WHAT IS THE SHELF LIFE OF BYRNA CHEMICAL PROJECTILES?
Byrna chemical projectiles typically have a shelf life of 2-3 years when stored in a cool, dry place.

The Byrna Ballistipac was invented by a Sheriff’s Deputy and an Emergency Room doctor who had treated too many victims of gun violence. Their goal was to provide First Responders (like school resource officers-SRO’s) as well as ordinary citizens with a discreet, non-descript backpack that, with a single motion could convert into full body armor. The Ballistipac can accept all manner of body armor and is offered by Byrna in three configurations - IIIA (capable of stopping all handgun rounds), III+ (capable of stopping bullets fired from an AR-15) and SRO (III+ in the front and IIIA in the back). While concealing your body armor, the Byrna Ballistipac also functions as a traditional backpack with storage for laptops, accessories, and other mission-essential items.

BYRNA SHIELD: FOR EVERYDAY LIFE.
While it is not practical for every American to walk around with a backpack that converts into full body armor, it does not mean that the general population is not at risk. Every year approximately 20,000 Americans are killed by firearms (not including suicide). Tens of thousands more are horribly injured. To address this risk, Byrna has introduced the Byrna Shield, a lightweight, flexible shield that fits easily into any backpack, bookbag, or briefcase. With a IIIA rating, the Shield is capable of stopping most handgun rounds, up to and including a .44 Magnum. While the Byrna Shield cannot stop all threats, when faced with an assailant with a gun, it is better to have a bulletproof shield than not have a bulletproof shield.
