PRESIDENT’S LETTER David Grotenhuis, President

I trust everyone had a family filled Holiday Season. We are certainly in a celebratory mood here at Birnam Wood. During the past 30 days we introduced our preliminary Strategic Plan. We had excellent involvement from our members. Numerous meetings were held for small groups during November and at the Town Hall meeting there were approximately 200 members in attendance. The goal was to explain that we are at the beginning of an exciting time for our Club. During the nearly 7 month process it became evident that the vast majority of our membership is looking forward to significant improvements to our facilities and programming. At the Town Hall meeting we explained that the physical items under consideration are an al fresco dining- entertainment and pool area, a new fitness facility, a bocce ball area, pickle ball courts, redecoration of 12 Garden cottages, improvements to the golf course and a complete redecoration of the clubhouse. As was no surprise, the clubhouse drew enthusiastic support from everyone. The Club has now retained The Cearnal Architectural Group to complete a Campus Master Site Plan and Development program. When we receive this plan we will be in a position to determine where the various components can and should be located. It is our intent to make the redecoration of the Clubhouse the first priority. We will also prioritize the Bocce Ball area. Pickle ball courts are also high on the list. The cottages are planned to be done over 3 years. The al fresco dining, entertainment and pool area and the fitness center will take longer to complete as the planning and County approval process can be laborious. These could be a few years away. Also presented at the Town Hall was the basic method of financing anticipated. While we do not know the cost of each component yet we are using $15,000,000 as a total working number. This amount will be mostly funded by new members’ dues and initiation fees. Currently we plan to cap any borrowing at $4,000,000. Of course, at this early stage we cannot be 100% definitive in either the scope, individual item cost or timeline. That is the purpose of the campus master plan. This is a large undertaking and is important to the continued vitality of our Club. The Plans success will be driven by new qualified members. In my last letter I mentioned that if 15% of our membership brought in 2 members over the next 3 years the financed plan would be assured. It takes a community to make this happen. Will you be part of the 15%? I hope that you share the sentiment with me that it’s an exciting time to be a part of the Birnam Wood family!

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER By Ari Kreisler, General Manager

This really is the “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year.” The Clubhouse all decked-out and festive, a Thanksgiving which was our best yet, Citrus Singers back in December where it belongs and Santa, straight from the North Pole to our very own 18th hole... in a helicopter! One thing that is keeping away the cold is Birnam’s smoking hot wine program. Wine sales at the Club are shattering records and in the last thirty days we hosted a Tuck Beckstoffer Wine Dinner, a “Black Friday” Wine Sale, a “Taste of Bordeaux” Wine Down Friday and an elegant Billehart – Salmon Champagne and Caviar Night. Did you come to the Summer Party in August? The feedback was so overwhelmingly positive that we decided to have a Winter Party in January. Music, dance and all that Jazz the night away with a Martini in one hand and your loved-one in the other. We have hired one of the best Jazz bands in southern California, and as is becoming customary, we have some fun surprises up our sleeves. And speaking of sleeves, we want you to come “dressed to impress!” What’s that broken green line sprayed around the green complexes on the golf course? It is the area that indicates where we want to prevent cart traffic and help you conform to our cart policy. We all want a pristine golf course for supreme playability and aesthetic beauty so please make certain to stay outside the broken green lines! Congratulations to our Birnam Wood golfers who just beat the Valley Club in the annual “Over the Fence” tournament. Just look at those smiles (see below)!

HOUSE COMMITTEE CORNER

By Beth Wood, Chair House Committee

Since 2018 has come to an end, I was reflecting on how far we’ve come this year as a club and as a community! Our 2018 goal on House Committee was to generate MORE FUN AND EXCITEMENT at our club in response to the 2017 Member Survey. Even though the first two months of the year we were “out of commission” due to mud slides we came back STRONG! Ari brought our attention to Jordan Sweeney who he had previously worked with. We hired him as our new Assistant G.M. This guy has more fun and fresh ideas than we have days and nights to implement them! He brought his team of Monica Dawson and Israel with him to “GO BIG” with all of our events and it has really paid off! The club also hired a club consultant, Rick Coyne from ClubMark to advise and steer us through a strategic planning process. Rick has been elated to see the programmatic changes we’ve made at Birnam over the past 8 months! We are creating the kind of environment that not only keeps our members happy but also the kind of “BUZZ” that attracts new and younger members! We are thrilled with the PROGRESS MADE! The month of December was off the charts! Kicking off the holiday season with the CITRUS SINGERS followed by WINE DOWN FRIDAY - A TASTE OF BORDEAUX, featuring Jordan Sweeney who once again elevated our knowledge of wine! BRUNCH WITH SANTA was over the top with live reindeer, snow-making and yes, Santa was flown in from the north pole for this event and landed on the 18th Fairway! Kids old and young were ecstatic!!! The BILLICART-SALMON CHAMPAGNE AND CAVIAR NIGHT took elegance at BWGC to a new level! Topping off the year was the ROCKIN’ NEW YEARS EVE PARTY! Our members danced the night away to one of our most favorite bands and celebrated the new year together! It was just THE BEST!!! Here’s what to look forward to in January... SEAFOOD EXTRAVAGANZA on January 17, WINTER JAZZ FEST on January 19 (not to be missed!!!), Rachel Brown returns to teach her ever popular PAINT & WINE class on January 31. House committee wishes you all a very HAPPY AND HEALTHY NEW YEAR! Our goal this year is to KEEP THE BUZZ GOING AND TAKE OUR CLUB TO A NEW LEVEL OF FUN AND ENTERTAINMENT!!! 8

SOMMELIER’S CORNER

By Jordan Sweeney, CSW, Assistant General Manager We have been working very hard on trying to better your wine experience here at Birnam. Hopefully you have seen some improvements on our selections, but also our presentation. We are serving wine at cellar temperature and are also rotating selections on for your enjoyment. This month we are featuring: Hayfork, Napa Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon, 2015 - I’m sure you will love this. Full bodied, heavy tannin and perfect for this cooler weather. Emilio Moro, Malleolus, Ribera del Duero, 2015 – OK, we really don’t sell much Spanish wine here, and it puzzles me, because some of the BEST wine in the world is made here! This “Malleolus” is fantastic and is a must try for any red wine lover, especially with an “old world” palate. Raats, Chenin Blanc, Stellenbosch, 2017 – We’ve been pouring this beautiful white wine for a while now and I feel like I need to express how much this wine rocks. This wine OVER-delivers. Clean, crisp and very refreshing. If you are a

fan of whites, especially “crisp” whites, you will LOVE this. Try it! OK, this ones for the Burgundy lovers: Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair Bourgogne Les Deux Terres, 2015 – WOW – What a spark in the “value” department. Blown away by the quality of this wine and is a “must drink” for any Pinot Noir lover. We are proud to announce that we will be having a Far Niente/ Nickel & Nickel Wine Dinner on Thursday, February 7th! Very limited seating, so sign up quick before this sells out! Also, please help me by congratulating, Cevins McCullah as he has been promoted to our Bar Supervisor. Cevins, is very passionate about this industry, especially when it comes to enhancing your experience. He is “onboard” with the new direction we are going and is very eager to help! Cevins works very hard to stay on top of beverage trends and will get all our bartenders to pour consistent as well as enhancing their knowledge. He will be a great addition to our management team.

GOLF NEWS

By Michael Goodcase, Head Golf Professional Happy New Year!!! It is incredible how quickly time passes. However, I think most all of us are looking forward to a great 2019!!! Birnam Wood Golf Club, the Members and the Staff spent much of 2018 recovering from the Thomas Fire and the mudslides of January 9. We persevered, recovered, and bonded as a community and a club. Now, we look ahead to a wonderful 2019! The beginning of 2019 presents the return of Men’s Team Play. After bowing out last year due to the destruction from the mudslides, the men look to have a hugely successful year. Captain, Andrew Anthony, has the team members poised for a playoff push. The first match will take place on Saturday, January 19, at La Cumbre. Our first home match will be the following weekend, January 26 against La Cumbre The beginning of December was busy for us here in the golf operation, with seven events in the first two weeks of the month. We did receive some nice rain, but the rain only had a minimal affect on our events. The Men’s Over the Fence match versus our friend and neighbor, Valley Club, was a huge success for our team. The golf courses were in perfect condition as 9 two man teams from each club took to the links. Valley Club hosted the first match on Saturday, December 1. Our team played exceptionally well and came away with a tie (27-27). That was good news as everyone knows what an advantage it can be for our members to play at home. The next Saturday, December 8, was no different. The first couple of groups to finish gave us the lead, and we never looked back. Groups continued to pile up the points as we marched to victory (34-20). Team Captain, David Cronenbold, is proud of his players for their play, and he is honored to bring the trophy to Birnam Wood for the first time in three years. Congratulations, gentlemen!!! We had a first-time event that paired members and staff in groups for a golf event. We had 64 players for our first Member-Employee golf outing. Thank you to all the members who participated. It was great to see such a nice turn out. There were golfers of all skill levels together that day. The winning team was kind of a juggernaut: Chris Gregoire, Andrew Anthony, Julio Limon (Outside Service) and Jenny Kotlyar (Director of Human Resources) shot a 10 under par 60 in route to a three stroke victory. The golf was followed by a fabulous food truck Shrimp vs. Chef. Thank you to everyone who participated as it was a special day. Our Annual Christmas Sale and 9 Hole Couples Golf Tournament were a big success. The member shopping did not let up throughout the day. Our first shoppers arrived around 8:00am and we went steady all the way until about 4:30pm. Most all of the discount balloons were popped that day, and the big 50% off was picked by Rev. Ian Noyes. The winner of our Grand Prize raffle item (10 Second Free Shopping Spree) went to Roger and Teddi Lenard. Mrs. Lenard planned out her items well to take full advantage of her 10 seconds. Oh, and by the way, the winners of the golf event were: Jim & Cindy Darcey with Eckard and Ingrid Brandes (27 – Front Nine), and Kelly Vandever, Celeste Turbeville, Rich Rosin, and Roz Fendon (27 – Back Nine). Congratulations to all the winners that day!!! Happy New Year to everyone! The golf shop staff is excited for a fantastic 2019!! 14

January 2019

ONE OR TWO-PIVOT SWING? By Scott Maier, Birnam Wood Teaching Professional What’s the difference between a one-pivot and twopivot swing? A player in a one-pivot (or no-pivot) swing uses very little, if any lateral head motion. He/ she has no transfer of weight from back foot to front foot during the swing. You will find a one-pivot swing can be useful with short game shots around the green because in the short game, we need speed to get the ball up in the air, but we don’t need power. A pivot provides power. A player in a two-pivot swing will move and rotate their head towards their back foot allowing their weight to shift from center at the address, to their back foot at the top of the back swing and then to their front foot at the finish. The two pivot points in a two-pivot swing are the front foot and back foot. This transfer of weight can also be described as a change in pressure from center, to back foot, to front foot. A two-pivot swing is more useful in the full swing when more distance is required. Remember, the pivot is a power source. Think of what a pitcher in baseball or a quarterback in football looks like before they throw the ball and the sequence they use to throw it. First, they load up all their weight on their back foot and then they step and change the pressure to their front foot before they release the ball. Imagine watching a pitcher or quarterback trying to throw the ball totally flat footed. First, they’d look a little funny, and second, they wouldn’t be able to throw the ball very far. Prove it to yourself the next time you’re at our practice facility. Pick-up a golf ball and while keeping both feet on the ground, throw the ball. Now grab a second ball but instead of keeping both feet on the ground, step and throw the second ball. Which ball went farther? It should be the second throw. If your experiencing a loss of distance in your full swing, one reason could be that you’re not properly pivoting. Here’s a drill to help you improve your pivot. Using an 8 or 9-iron take your normal stance. Now move your left foot next to your right foot so they are next to each other and stop. Next, swing the club to the top and stop. Finally, step toward the target with your left foot and then swing the club.

First, try this drill without a ball. Take several practice swings until you feel comfortable with your pivot. A final key is to make sure you step first before you swing the club. I have seen some players swing and then step forward. If you do that, you’re practicing an improper sequence (see photos below).

Remember, I’m here to help. Call the golf shop to schedule a lesson. We can increase your power and distance by improving your pivot.

TENNIS NEWS

By Dan Webster, Director of Tennis Happy New Year Tennis Members! Somehow, we’ve arrived in another year and with a much less eventful, and hopefully, happier end to the preceding year. For those who have been coming out to play Pickle Ball, please remember that we have a Saturday event every third Saturday of the month, for instruction and play. During the week, there are open times in the afternoons for opportunities to play. If you are interested, please contact the Tennis office and schedule either match play or lessons with the Pros’. Also, please stay posted for an event in February or March where we will have the Women’s UCSB Tennis Team, playing in an event here at Birnam Wood. We will keep you posted and have information in the Tennis Shop when we have more information to share and update! UPCOMING EVENTS: Pickle Ball Clinic: January 19th, 2-3:30 Member Guest Doubles Event: February 10th, Time: TBD Pickle Ball Clinic: February 16th, 2-3:30 TENNIS TIP: The most effective and underutilized serve in doubles is the serve to the body. Serving to the body is optimal because returners have more trouble directing this serve where they want it to go (i.e. away from the net player). If a serve is hit to the body, the player must quickly move out of the way and get in position to hit a decent return. Most players have poor footwork when faced with a body serve or get flustered when the ball is coming straight at their body. This is exactly what you want when serving against a returner. A serve to the body takes away the ability of a player to move forward while hitting the ball. The body serve reduces the angles that returners can hit into. By contrast, serving wide gives the returner a great crosscourt angle, and should only be utilized if the server can accurately place his or her slice serve and produce a wide angle. Serving down the T is also a great serve for cutting down angles and forcing a more difficult inside-out return to avoid hitting near the net player. However, I think the body serve is even better. The body serve is the most likely to produce an errant or misplaced return because it is extremely difficult to move out of the way and hit a well-placed shot. And the body serve is also the easiest and safest serve to hit. This is because you are aiming for the middle of the service box. As a result, you have less of a chance of hitting the ball wide. Getting into position to hit a return when the ball is coming toward your body is extremely difficult. As a result, the net player on the server’s side has a much greater chance at hitting a volley off the return for a winner or to set up an advantage in the point.

FITNESS NEWS

By Joy DuMay & Liz Parrish, Co-Directors THE BEST WORKOUT EVER! One of the most frequent questions I get from clients is “what is the best workout for losing weight?” While each person’s metabolism, caloric intake, regular exercise routine, health status, etc. needs to be considered, the most efficient and successful programs include interval training. Interval training uses short bursts of high intensity exercise alternating with longer lower intensity exercise. Whether you are walking, jogging, swimming or lifting weights, intervals can be used to rev up metabolism, increase strength and improve cardiovascular health. For example, if you are walking on a treadmill at your normal pace, ramp up the intensity by either walking faster or adding incline to a level that is very challenging for thirty seconds, then go back to a more sustainable pace for two minutes. Alternate these two intervals for part or all of your workout to boost your metabolism and burn more calories! One of the main benefits of interval training is burning more calories. The more vigorously you work out, the more calories you burn. Many people feel they don’t have time to exercise. Interval training can be done in as little as 20 minutes! Done correctly, you get cardio and full body strength done in one session! The principles of interval training are the same for all types and levels of fitness. Make sure the exercises you choose are appropriate for you. Start slowly, add impact slowly and do not over train. Try adding just one or two high intensity intervals per workout to start. Join us for a complimentary Bootcamp class the second Tuesday of each month from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. Each class will have 45 minutes of full body intervals followed by 15 minutes of Balance (January), Posture (February), Flexibility (March) and Core (April).
