PRESIDENT’S LETTER David Grotenhuis, President

We are starting our new year and this is my first letter to you. The first thing I would like to mention is to thank Larry Guy for his service during the past year for all he did during the very difficult time we had with the fire and flood. Thank you, Larry, and to you Peggy for supporting him! I am reminded every time I come to Birnam that we are a community of friends. That is what we need to continue to be – a community of friends and good neighbors. That was so evident during the fires and floods of the past year. We came together to help each other and our surrounding community in any way we could. This is one of the best ways to attract members. We all want to be with people who care and help each other. One of the most important items in front of us is the development of the Strategic Plan. We have had 570 responses from our members regarding the survey we used to kick off the plan. That was followed up by focus groups, fireside chats, and a Town Hall meeting. A very high percentage of members attended all or part of these meetings. This process has told us we need to make some significant changes in the years ahead to maintain and increase the vitality of our Club. The Strategic Plan will take several years to bring to full implementation. It is a big undertaking. Significant time and effort has been invested by several of our members and will continue through full implementation. Not all parts of the Strategic Plan are sticks and bricks. An equally important part is programmatic. That is already taking place. The Halloween Party and Rock the Range are two good examples. We need to bring our membership to the levels of several years ago. Because we have been an older club our attrition rate is greater than normal. This is beginning to change. Do you know that of approximately the last 20 new members one half have been under 35? That is terrific and needs to continue. If for two years only 15% of our members would invite one friend to become a member our club would be full. Will you be part of that 15%?

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER By Ari Kreisler, General Manager

The celebration-like atmosphere around here makes me so happy. The entire staff is onboard with the buzz and you all have been so supportive. It’s all happening! Remember to sign-up in advance for all these activities because I hate getting emails from Members when the special events are sold-out. In thirty days, we had the Fright Night, the Rock on the Range event, Thanksgiving and the Black Friday Wine Super-Sale. We had the Annual Meeting, Fireside Chats and Town Hall Meeting. The Veterans Day event, with your fellow members jumping out of airplanes and landing on the 18th fairway, was mind blowing. Mars versus Venus was an absolute blast and Men’s Guest Day had 80 players! The Tuck Beckstoffer wine dinner was too good to be true. The Kid’s Gingerbread House Workshop was the cutest thing I have ever seen. Okay, breathe, on to December… We will have the Couples Christmas Tournament on December 2nd, Citrus Singers on the 12th, Wine Down on the 14th, Tennis Club Championship on the 15th, Brunch with Santa on the 16th, Billecart-Salmon Champagne and Caviar night on the 21st and remember to sign-up for New Year’s Eve! You keep the smiles coming and I will make sure your seatbelts are securely fastened.

I hope all the families with children and grandchildren signed up for the Gingerbread House workshop and pizza party on November 18th. Chef will be leading a class on how to decorate your very own gingerbread house. A lovely family-centered activity for our club. “NOT YOUR USUAL THANKSGIVING” is coming your way! Sommelier’s Corner

By Jordan Sweeney, CSW Assistant General Manager

December is here, and I’ve officially made it through a third of a year here at Birnam Wood. Hope you all are having fun! My staff and I have a few tricks lined up for upcoming events that we hope you can enjoy. This month look out for Citrus Singers, Brunch with Santa and a new event we are doing on December 21st, “Billecart-Salmon Champagne & Caviar Night.” This is a black tie, dress to impress, elegant evening where we will be tasting some of the most highly sought-after bubbles and caviar in the world. You will NOT want to miss this event. Also, please remember to spend New Year’s Eve with us!! We went all out on the band and added a “cocktail duo” band to play during our cocktail hour. It’s going to be very fun and we all need a “night out” to celebrate this very HARD year we had. In January, we are proud to announce our first ever, “Winter Jazz Fest” on January 19th – A live 6-piece famous” jazz band hitting the stage with cocktails, dancing and a great “jazzy” time. Don’t miss this HUGE event!

TASTE OF BORDEAUX Friday, December 14th 5pm – 6:30pm Come join your clubs Certified Sommelier, Certified Specialist of Wine and Assistant General Manager as he takes you through the world of Bordeaux. 6 wines from the best sub-regions will be paired with 6 small bites. You don’t have to be wine savvy, come and enjoy! $75++ Don’t be intimidated, you don’t have to know anything about wine. Come and have FUN with your new SOMM and enjoy the experience that everyone will be talking about! Contact the Front Desk for Reservations (805)969-2223. Reservations are encouraged for dining afterward. Please arrive promptly.

Wine time…

There is a wine that I was introduced to earlier this year and I am very fond of it. I was in Napa Valley this past winter and ran into wine maker/owner Steve Tonella of S.R. Tonella Cellars. We went out for dinner and I tried his 2013 Napa Cabernet Sauvignon from Rutherford, Napa. There are very few wines that really blow me away, I mean really blow me away. This wine was a huge, silky, dusty, lush, structured Cabernet. I have enjoyed his 2010, 2014 and now 2015 vintage and the consistency and quality are top notch. Next time you are up at the club, please tell Eric, Ivan or me to pull a bottle out of the cellar to enjoy with your dinner. You will NOT be disappointed. Hopefully, everyone has been enjoying our new wine by the glass list. Remember about our “Coravin List!” Try a glass of Insignia or DRC!!! Life’s too short, and you deserve it… Cheers, Jordan Sweeney

GOLF NEWS

By Michael Goodcase, Head Golf Professional I am confident that all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends. If you are like me, you may not be quite as ready for the next holiday, CHRISTMAS!! Please keep the Birnam Wood Golf Shop in mind when considering that special gift for that golfer in your life. Our Annual Christmas Sale will take place on Sunday, December 2 from 8:00am through closing. We will have our balloons floating throughout the golf shop with discounts in them. Discounts apply to all in stock merchandise you purchase that day. There will be a Couples’ 9 Hole Golf Tournament beginning at 1:30pm. Scott Maier, Teaching Professional, will offer a 10-minute golf clinic starting at 1:15pm. The day will conclude with wine, hors d’oeuvres, golf prizes, raffle, and the grand prize raffle. Many of you attended the Fright Night and/or Rock on the Range. With that being said, the Annual Sale will not disappoint!! Do not miss out on this fantastic opportunity!! I need to recognize our latest Ladies’ Club Champion. Mrs. Kathy Barton won the crown in a fantastic match against eventual RunnerUp, Barbara Kummer. This was her first Ladies’ Club Championship victory. I am sure there may be many more in the future, as she is fairly new to the game and works very hard on her skills. I always have the pleasure of watching the championship match, and this was an excellent match. Kathy Barton never trailed in the match. She built a 3 Up lead at the 13th hole, but Barbara Kummer never gave up. She made a number of clutch putts and won the next three holes to square the match after 16. After halving the 17th hole, they went to the final hole All Square. Kathy Barton made par on the final hole to win the hole and the match. Congratulations to both ladies for playing well all week!! The Veteran’s Day Event was a huge success. The day was full of things for the members to enjoy. The day began with a Pancake Breakfast for the members with live music. The Grill Terrace was the perfect viewing spot to watch fellow members fall from the sky, as they tandem parachuted out of a perfectly good airplane. Nancy Hunter, Ingrid Shattuck, Vivienne Bellisario, Wendy Laub, and Gregg & Madelyn Foster were brave enough to bid on the parachute package at last year’s event, and then still went through with the jump after a year to think about it. The middle of the day members enjoyed a fun and competitive round of golf. Congratulations to our winning team of Tim & Holly Armour and Jim & Ingrid Shattuck. The dinner and speaker event took place after golf, cocktails and hors d’ oeuvres. Chef Brandon knocked it out of the park with a fantastic meal. This year’s speaker, Amb. Dell Dailey (Ret.), was so insightful into the current events affecting the world today. Finally, the event would not have been so successful without the support of so many members. All of your generosity makes such a huge impact on the lives of our local veterans. I need to shout out to all the men who participated on the Team from Mars. The match between Mars and Venus was very close throughout the day. The ladies from Venus had a three point lead at 17 ½ to 14 ½, but the men did not lose another match for the rest of the day. The final score was Mars 25 ½ Venus 17 ½. Thank you to everyone who participated. It was one of our largest fields (44 players). To all the men and women that enjoy team play, now is the time to start preparing. Men’s matches begin the middle of January, and 14

December 2018

Women’s matches will begin the beginning of March. Plan match play rounds with your fellow team members to sharpen your match play skills. Also, January of 2019 is the start of the New Rules of Golf. Players need to be knowledgeable in how the rules will change. Hopefully, you attended my Rules Seminar on November 29. If you were unable to attend, then feel free to stop by and speak with the Golf Professionals with any questions you may have on the rules. You may also pick up the Player’s Edition of the 2019 Rules of Golf. With the cold weather upon us, it is important to remind everyone about our golf cart usage policy. Bermuda grass is a warm weather grass. It goes into a state of dormancy during cold weather and becomes more susceptible to golf cart wear and tear. It is vital for the golf course playability and the enjoyment of the golfers that members adhere to our golf cart policies. All golf carts are to be kept at least 15 yards away from all green complexes, unless on a cart path. Carts must not be driven on side slopes of, or onto, tee areas or greens, or onto side slopes of bunkers or hazards. Also, carts are not to be parked in front of greens while putting. Park on a path alongside the green or near the next tee to allow trail groups to play sooner and aid in pace of play. Marty Moore and I have marked the golf course by painting broken green lines where carts should not pass. Please follow these rules and improve the quality of the turf near and around our green complexes. This web address is an excellent article about cart traffic and the impact it has on golf course conditions. We have also downloaded this article to our club website. http://gsrpdf.lib.msu.edu/ticpdf.py?file=/article/oatis-kammerercart-11-2-18.pdf

How Far Behind the Ball Should You Hit a Greenside Bunker Shot? By Scott Maier, Birnam Wood Teaching Professional How do you know if you are getting the right amount of sand between the ball and the clubface? Let’s look at some of the shots you may face during a round of golf here at Birnam Wood. Take note in the scenarios below that you will not always need the same amount of sand between the ball and clubface. Sometimes you’ll need more, sometimes less. • Hole #5 is designed with three bunkers left of the green with two of those being quite deep. For deeper bunker shots, a player is required to hit a relatively short shot with plenty of height. When faced with that scenario, you should look to strike the sand approximately 2 inches behind the ball to provide enough sand to elevate the ball over the deep face and stop the ball on the green. • The redesigned 9th hole has a shallow bunker behind the green. Because of the low lip and that little water hazard on the other side of the green, you should consider hitting more of a “chunk and run” shot. When faced with that shot, you will want to strike the sand 3-4 inches behind the ball to produce a lower shot with less carry. This will help you guard against a thin shot that flies into the water hazard. • The two front bunkers on hole #18 pose another challenge for golfers. Depending on the hole location and the position of the ball, a golfer may face a 25-yard bunker shot. If you find your ball in this

situation you will most likely want to hit only an inch behind the ball. Doing so will produce a higher trajectory and more carry. The reason that you need a drill to practice these shots is because it is very difficult to determine how far behind the ball you are hitting. In other words, after hitting a bunker shot, you look down and see a big divot in the same but you have no reference to where the ball originally laid. Here is a drill to help you see where your club is entering the sand: Once you place your ball, draw a line in the sand as shown in the photo below. Now go ahead and hit your shot. Afterwards, look where your club first strikes the sand in relationship to the line in the sand. Keep practicing until you get comfortable striking the sand at your desired entry point. Remember, I am here to help. Call the golf shop and schedule a lesson. We can definitely shave strokes off your score when we start matching the amount of sand between the ball and clubface to the bunker shot we’re trying to hit.

Whether you are traveling or have family visiting, it’s easy to fit in a walk. Aim for the same time each day and opt for the outdoors: in inclement weather, a mall or museum is a great place to get in your strides. 3) Lead by example. Encourage friends and family members to join in. Instead of canceling your regular workout, ask your guests to come along and move as well. 4) Make it simple. Bring along exercise tubing or bands that you can use for strength and stretch moves. There’s no need to go to a gym if you bring it with you! 5) Stretch every night. Before you get into bed, do a “Doorway Stretch” to open up your chest muscles and stretch your calves. Then do 5 Toe Touches/Overhead Stretches to lengthen your whole body.

TENNIS NEWS

By Dan Webster, Director of Tennis Dear Tennis Member(s), somehow, we have made it through another year. It has been eventful on several levels: from the fire of the previous December and the rains in January, which led to the heavy flooding and great losses to many of our members and their friends and family. Many are still dealing with the aftermath; our best wishes go out to everyone involved. We’d like to take this chance to thank Ms. Pam Temple for her contribution over the past year as our Tennis Committee Chairperson. It’s not always easy, and especially this year with everything our community has been through. Thank you, Pam! Our B Team matches continue on pace, with only one rain out last month on a very wet morning. The team is fighting and competing point in and point out, and that’s exciting! One good example was the match between Knollwood, last month, where Anne Towbes and Cathleen Grabowski battled in a three-set thriller to pull out a victory. Pickle Ball has made some fits and starts. Now that we’ve had some good experiences to build on, we feel as though we can plan a weekly designated time for a clinic and match play. Join us every Friday from 2:30-4 pm! Please contact the Tennis Pro Shop to reserve a spot. Tennis Tip You don’t play one match – You play two. During the Point - This area is focused on everything to do with hitting the ball. We spend thousands of hours on the practice court, so we can succeed here. Even though it is obviously a very important part of the match, it is still not the most important. This really needs to be where the match is played for the second time. The first time the point is previewed in your head and then it is played out the way you want it. Between the Points - This area focuses on the mental and emotional aspects of your game. We spend almost no time practicing this area, but it is absolutely the most important part of the match. How well you think and how well you control your emotions are a monster part of the outcome. The 25 seconds between the points is your time to strategize and out-think the opponent. Weakness Between the Points - Imagine for a moment that between the points is a weakness of your game. You are not good mentally or emotionally. It’s basically impossible to screw this area up and then expect to succeed once the point starts. The two areas are very closely aligned. If you are not focused on the game plan, or clearly understand the opponent, then your battle is always going to be uphill. Strength Between the Points - This is your opportunity to get the upper hand on your opponent. They may have a better forehand, a bigger serve, be faster around the court, but if you think better and control your emotions under pressure then you have bigger weapons than they do. The two biggest weapons you will always have in a tennis match are your head and your heart. In an even battle, these definitely matter more than the strokes.
