PRESIDENT’S LETTER Larry Guy, President
While this letter will be published on November 1st, it’s important to note the Club’s fiscal year ended the day before on October 31st. The Club and Homeowner’s Annual Meetings will be held on November 8th. The Homeowner’s meeting will begin promptly at 5 pm in the Main Events Room to be followed by a meeting of all members of Birnam Wood Golf Club starting at 5:30 pm. The Club had a year filled with many exciting events, challenges and progress on many key projects. An update on the year and what we can look forward to in the coming year will be presented at the Annual Meeting of Club members. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be served following the meeting. On November 11, Veteran’s Day, members of Birnam Wood Golf Club will be hosting the 3rd Annual Veteran’s Day Events. The day starts off with three parachute jumps with several Birnam members participating. There will be color guard singing the National Anthem before the start of the golf tournament. Following golf, there will be a cocktail party and dinner in honor of our local veterans. All proceeds of this event go to the Veterans Scholarship Fund that has granted over 96 Promise Scholarships totaling over $256,000 to local veterans at UCSB and SBCC. If you have not participated in this inspiring event in the last two years, I strongly recommend that you join in with your fellow members as we build on a growing legacy of honoring and appreciating the service and sacrifice of local veterans. October was an exciting month at the Club. The final coating of the roads was completed bringing the road project to a close. The project was one of the largest capital improvement undertakings at Birnam in recent years. I would like to take this opportunity to thank a few individuals who stayed with the project over a two-year period: Marty Moore, Golf Course Superintendent, Mitch Vargas, Director of Security, as project managers, the Road Committee consisting of Club members Bill Kimsey-Chair, Larry Guy and Don Eversoll, and General Manager, Ari Kreisler. The new roads really enhance our beautiful community. This year marks the first year of Ari Kreisler as our General Manager. I think we can agree he’s done a remarkable job. This month’s newsletter will be my last as Club President. I have enjoyed serving with our dedicated and capable Board of Directors, working with the Committee Chairs, Committee Members and our great team of management and staff. I want to thank all the members and staff for supporting me this last year. Birnam Wood is a special place. It has been a real pleasure serving as President and meeting many of you. Larry Guy President 2

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER By Ari Kreisler, General Manager
Since my last article, the Club took a deep breath and focused on the Strategic Plan and training. That’s so we can gear-up for an over-the-top October/November/December. We wanted 2018 to be all about the fun and we plan to close the year with even another level of excitement to bring joy to you and your guests. It starts on October 25th, with a Halloween event that has already happened by the time you read this. But judging from what we have in store, it will be talked about for a long time to come. Next is the driving range event on November 2nd, which is going to set a new standard for golf+fun! Then on November 11th, there is a full day of activity for Veteran’s Day including a pancake breakfast, parachuters landing on the 18th fairway, a golf tournament and then it all culminates with an amazing dinner and speaker. As you can see from our calendar, that’s just the very tip. I wanted to take this opportunity to thank someone very special to Birnam Wood and to me. Larry Guy took the helm as President one year ago and helped guide your club through an astonishing year. No President in our history has ever been faced with anything like what we endured in the last ten months. Mr. Guy stood next to us in what, at times, seemed like an insurmountable battle. He defined leadership by pointing the Club forward giving a lifetime of energy and support, all while he was faced with his own personal difficulties. This club is undoubtedly better than it was before he was President. Thank you, Mr. Guy. I can’t imagine being in the trenches with anyone else.

House Committee Corner
By Beth Wood, Chair House Committee We’re keeping the BIRNAM BUZZ ALIVE as we roll into fall with many fun and interesting events coming your way! We have our first ever Family Fright Night celebrating Halloween on Thursday, October 25th! This promises to be at least a 9 or maybe even a 10 on the “FUN METER”! There will be a haunted house, costumes, Pumpkin Pasta Buffet, and dancing all evening on the terrace to a great DJ. The kids will have their own party complete with DJ, games and activities in the Grill Room. Adults will have their party in the Events Room and the 19th Hole. Our goal is to have fun things for families with children while still respecting the needs and desires of our adult members. We hope you will be joining in the FUN! I attended the Speaker’s Night featuring Jeremy Tessmer last night! It was a great opportunity to learn more about the history of artists in our community as well as learn about the new artists that make our community so special! House Committee member, Ricardo Calderon did an outstanding job of engaging and hosting the evening! The room was elegantly decorated, and the dinner was exceptional! We are purposely keeping our Speaker Nights smaller to create a feeling of intimacy and elegance (plus... members can hear better!). Our next Speaker’s Night is November 9th featuring Neal Graffy on “Santa Barbara Then and Now.” Come and learn more about the history of our wonderful community! Sign up early as space is limited! Look for an OUTSTANDING ARRAY OF EVENTS IN NOVEMBER! Come and “Rock Out On The Range” on November 2nd with complimentary live music, beer, wine and Hors d’oeuvres on the driving range 4:00-6:30 (nongolfing member participation encouraged!). This promises to be a real blast! Tuck Beckstoffer Wine Dinner is on November 17th. One of the finest and most well-known winemakers in America is joining us thanks to Jordan! November 22 will be our traditional favorite... Thanksgiving dinner which will offer 2 seatings! Sign up soon as this always sells out! nd
Then on November 23 join us for Black Friday Wine Sale where you will find GREAT BUYS on wine while you sip on complimentary champagne and socialize with your friends! rd
House Committee is beyond excited about the plethora of new ideas being brought to us by Jordan and his team! IT’S AN EXCITING TIME TO BE A MEMBER AT BIRNAM WOOD GOLF CLUB! 4

Someone once said that “the more things change the more they stay the same.” That certainly reflects on the theme of Santa Barbara Then and Now. Take a journey back for a tour of our city’s past for a comparison of Then as it is replaced by Now which again becomes Then and now we have Now which will soon become Then. This is the only historic slide show which dares to ask (and answer) the question “Must every building in Santa Barbara be a restaurant at least once in its life?” A delicious 3-course dinner with hosted wine will also be served and a copy of “Santa Barbara Then and Now” is included in the cost of admission. $69.95++ Per Person

Sommelier’s Corner
By Jordan Sweeney, CSW, Assistant General Manager November creeped up on us. It’s here and it’s time to put away the Rosé and start cracking open the Beaujolais! This is my favorite time of the year for wine. This is when the nice, rich Cabs and the rich Chardonnays are perfect! This season is also great Bordeaux and Burgundy drinking.
Did you know?
Did you know Birnam Wood’s wine program is ranked 2nd in California by the Club Management Association of America’s Wine Society? We have an amazing wine program here, and we are working hard to enhance it even more! We are continuing to look for creative ways to enhance our member’s dining experience. We have totally revamped our Wine by the Glass list and are now serving 34 wines by the glass from regions all over the world. We have brought on gems from South Africa all the way to New York! All
Sparkling
We have also added the “Coravin List.” What is it? Well, this list will allow us to pour SUPER premium wines by the glass table side. For example, wines like: Domaine de la Romanee Conti, Chave Hermitage and Joseph Phelps Insignia. We might be the only club in the nation able to pour such a wine like that, seriously! The Coravin is a machine that allows us to take the wine out of the bottle without taking out the cork, so no oxygen ever gets into the bottle. So, the next time you want to treat yourself on your birthday, or you want to go big on your anniversary or you just LOVE great vino, order off the Coravin list. We are now pouring all reds at cellar temperature too! No more room temperature wine. We have an amazing wine program and we should be proud of this! Take a look at our “new” by the glass list below.

Sommelier’s Corner Continued Some wines to keep in mind to try: Gamay, Philippe Pacalet, Moulin-a-Vent, Beaujolais Grand Cru, 2015 – This is a MUST try for any Burgundy (old world Pinot Noir) lover. This Beaujolais is the BEST around and is very highly sought out. Only a few cases are allocated to certain accounts and we are honored to be able to share this with you by the glass. This should be in everyone’s glass for Thanksgiving!! (e-mail me for a 6pk to go, if you’d like)
some amazing Rieslings in this world. Rieslings are very special, and I am obsessed with this one from the Finger Lakes. BONE dry in style with racy acidity and citrus notes. Pair this with anything spicy!! It will enhance your dining experience!
Chenin Blanc, Raats, “Original,” Stellenbosch, South Africa, 2017 - “Steen” is what they call Chenin in South Africa and it is known as the most “bang for your buck!” This Chenin is “unoaked” and so refreshing. Cabernet Sauvignon, Secret Indulgence, “Secret Blend,” Napa, 2015 – This 96 point wine is as good as it gets from Napa. We LOVE finding wines that you’ve never heard of. This one blew me away! 88% Cabernet Sauvignon blended with 12% Petite Sirah from select vineyards in Rutherford, Oakville and St. Helena. Big wine for the heavy hitters! Pinot Noir, Kosta Browne, Sta. Rita Hills, 2016 – From our local Sta Rita Hills AVA, this wine rocks and does our area proud! Try this before our allocation sells out! Dry Riesling, Forge Cellars, Finger Lakes, New York, 2016 – Riesling has gotten a bad reputation as being a “sweet” wine and a wine with little quality. This mostly started when Germany released a wine called, “Liebfraumilch,” and often by a label called, “Blue Nun.” Yes, that is poor quality wine and there are
We are also pleased to announce our Tuck Beckstoffer Wine Dinner on Saturday, November 17th. This dinner is very limited so please call to reserve your spot as soon as you can. GOLF NEWS
By Michael Goodcase, Head Golf Professional The amount of daylight continues to shrink by the day. That means everyone should be planning to get their golf in earlier in the day. Mornings at Birnam Wood are a great time to play golf. You can experience fresh cut putting surfaces and, many times, the entire golf course all to yourself. However, the amount of time you will have to sharpen your golf skills will diminish as our range hours will be changing on Sunday, November 4th. The range will close at 4:30pm each day. Also, a new option to booking lessons is now available to the members. You can book a lesson on our website. Under the “Golf ” pull down menu there is a link to “Book a Lesson.” The system will notify the instructor and send you a reminder email. Contact the golf shop if you have any questions.
the 18th fairway, golf tournament, dinner and speaker. Our guest speaker for the evening will be Ambassador (Ret) Dell Dailey. The focus of his talk will be on “Military Threats from China & Russia.” Please join us for this wonderful event, and enjoy a special day at Birnam Wood with fellow members who share the same passion for helping others.
With November upon us, you know what that means... THE HOLIDAYS!! If you are at all like me, the days seem to pass by all too quickly and before you know it you are rushing around trying to get ready. So, remember to stop by the golf shop for early holiday shopping. If what you want is not in stock, that will give us plenty of time to order it, have it delivered, and wrap it for that special someone. Those of you that like to wait a little longer will be happy to know that our 9 Hole Couples’ Christmas Tournament and all-day sale will take place on Sunday, December 2nd. This is a popular members’ only event, so sign up early. We offer incredible deals, free food and wine, a fun golf tournament, and a raffle to wrap up the day. This is a mixed event. Groups must consist of two men and two women, but they do not have to be couples. Take time to invite another Birnam Wood member to play in this easy format: 1 Best Ball of the Foursome (Net only).
MEN’S GUEST DAY October 10, 2018 Results
Your staff is committed to making spectacular events for you the Members. Hopefully, you experienced that at the Birnam Wood Fright Night. I encourage all of you to take the time to participate in our upcoming events. The first “must attend” event in November will be the Rock at the Range on Friday, November 2nd, from 4:00pm to 6:30pm. If you are at all familiar with, and enjoy, Top Golf, you will not be disappointed. Next will be the battle of the sexes, as Mars and Venus take to the battlefield (or golf course) on Sunday, November 4th. Who will prevail at the end of this great match play event? On behalf of the Veteran’s Scholarship Committee and myself, we wanted to encourage everyone to be a part of an incredibly important and impactful day, Veterans’ Day! On Sunday, November 11th, Birnam Wood will host the 2018 Veteran’s Day Event to raise money for our local Veteran Scholarships at UCSB and SBCC. The day is jam packed with can’t miss events: pancake breakfast, Members tandem jumps landing on 10

Finally, most of you know that the Rules of Golf will be changing in 2019. With that being said, I will be putting together a rules seminar in the near future. My goal will be to introduce you to some of the major changes. The seminar will be split into time on the golf course and in the clubhouse. I am sure we will have cocktails and food available, so keep your eyes open for a flyer with the exact date and time.

How to Make Your Pitch Shots Stop Quicker By Scott Maier, Birnam Wood Teaching Professional It’s pretty cool to watch PGA and LPGA Tour players work their magic around the greens. We watch them hit pitches that take one hop and stop, or one hop and slowly roll-out close to the hole. And we all know the closer we hit the ball to hole, the higher the probability we hole the putt. So what exactly does it take to make the ball stop on the green? Here are a few key points to keep in mind: 1) Clean Grooves: Perhaps the most important factor is to keep your grooves clean. The main purpose of the grooves on the club’s face is to collect dirt and moisture. Any dirt and moisture between the ball and clubface increases the launch angle and reduces the spin. This will result in less friction or less grip and the ball is going to roll more when it hits the green. If the face on your wedge is dirty and the dirt is compacted into the groves there’s no chance to stop the ball quickly. Keep in mind just wiping off the clubface is not enough. I’m talking about getting in there with water, a brush and a wet towel to remove all the dirt. 2) A Premium Golf Ball: Premium golf balls are designed to produce a low launch, high spin ball flight which is ideal for making the ball stop sooner on the green. You may lose some distance in your long game playing a premium ball, however, the strokes you save around the green will be worth it. Consider ball such as Taylor Made TP5, TP5 X; Titleist PROV1, PROV1 X; or Callaway Chrome Soft. 3) Shallow Divots: The interaction between your wedge and the ground plays a vital roll in creating spin. If you’re taking deep divots, your swing is too steep, meaning you’re hitting down on the ball too much. When steep, your pitch shots roll more because you have grass and dirt between the ball and clubface making it impossible to spin the ball. Ideally, you want a swing that produces a shallow divot. TIP: Feel like your brushing the top of the grass to maximize ball face contact which will produce a low launch, high spin pitch shot. Birnam Wood has a perfect short range (behind the practice putting green) to practice these shots. Before your next round, do a quick check on your wedges to make sure the face and grooves are clean, grab some premium balls and spend some time at the short range. Remember to make shallow divots to help you hit drop-and-stop shots around the green.

FITNESS NEWS
By Joy DuMay & Liz Parrish, Co-Directors Holiday Fitness QUIZ! True or False? 1) Working out in 3 separate bouts of 10 minutes is just as good as exercising in one 30-minute session. True! As far as burning calories, it is fine to spread out your exercise over the course of the day. Stick to a minimum of 10 minutes at a time and try to move as vigorously as you can. You can fit in fitness over the holidays! We have designed a “No Equipment Needed” handout that you can pick up in the Fitness Center. 2) It’s best to rest after a long journey over the holidays. False! Keep moving – even if it’s not your usual routine or as intense as you’d like. Try Power Walking by parking your car further from your destination and striding briskly to increase your metabolism, revive your energy stores, and burn off some of those extra calories you’ve been eating. Add stretching to counteract the muscle-shortening effects of auto or plane travel (the Walker’s and Traveler’s Stretch Series handouts are in the Fitness Center).

Bring in the family (must be at least 16 years of age) for movement on the cardio machines, for a group exercise class (class schedule is in the newsletter and on the website), or just use the beautiful streets of Birnam Wood for a stroll. Lead by example to show your visitors how daily exercise helps you feel better physically and mentally.

4) Go ahead, eat your favorite treats! Actually, YES! Go ahead and enjoy the potatoes, the pie – but remember: moderation is the key. Make this the year you wake up with NO extra pounds on January 1st. It is the holidays where yummy food is enticing – but choose small portions and take your time eating so that you don’t end up stuffed and uncomfortable. 5) “I’m going to too many parties and events: I will start over in 2019”. Ohhh-Kaaay. You know it is much easier to put on fat weight than to lose it. This is your call…. Overdo the eating and drinking and bemoan the extra 5 (10?) pounds it will take you weeks (months?) to work off? Or…. be smart and make it a point to move every day and “eat lean” the day after a big meal? It’s YOUR choice! Make 2019 the year you start out healthier! Contact Joy (joydumayfitness@gmail.com) or Liz (lizparrishfitness@gmail. com) for expert advice. We are here to help you get fit! November 2018

TENNIS NEWS
By Dan Webster, Director of Tennis The end of the year is upon us, and we have plans to have a Tennis Dinner kick off for 2019, in January. We have scheduled every month a Pickle Ball event on the third Saturday of the month as a standing date for instruction and play. If it would be of interest to have another clinic for practice and instruction, please feel free to stop by or call the Tennis Shop for possible days that might be convenient and perhaps we might get sufficient enthusiasm to add another clinic to our schedule. Please remember to make your Tennis Court reservation for the week, beginning at 8AM Monday morning. Reservations will be taken in order of receipt. You might contact the Instructors by cell phone, but, the office line will supersede those direct contacts by time stamp. Remember to sign up for the Birnam WOOD Classic event. It will, of course be a wood racket event. Feel free to invite your strongest playing guest, or the Tennis Pros’ will make every effort to provide a partner for those who need help. Also, please remember to brush your clay court after your use, so that the next players will also have a well-groomed court for their play. It is not necessary to brush the lines, just the court surface. This will also extend the life of the court, as well as, maintain the high-quality surface we have all come to expect and enjoy. Tennis Dinner Kick off for 2019: January 12th Tennis Tip Your Best-Ever Performance is NOT your Level What separates tennis players are seldom their technique, but how good they are at consistently playing close to what they already know in matches. We have to remember that Tennis is an extremely complex sport where the amount of skills you need to master is huge. Simply think about the forehand & how you need to be able to hit it at waist-, hip- & shoulder height with different spins & court positioning in both offensive, neutral & defensive rallies. AND that is just the forehand and then there are all of the other strokes & on top of all the strokes/skills you need to master that you have an opponent! And the only job of your opponent is to make life miserable for you on the court. In other words, thinking that you will be able to perform on the same level as your best ever performance every time you step on to the tennis court is simply UNREALISTIC. Instead it’s about trying to figure out a way to pull through with what you have got on the specific day whether that is 70 %, 75 % or maybe 80 % of your best ever performance on a good day.

BRIDGE NEWS
By Robert Hollman, Bridge Chairman As a reminder, the regular Thursday 1:00 duplicate game will not be held on Thanksgiving – no surprise I’m sure. On the other Thursdays there is a no host lunch table reserved for bridge players starting at 11:45, as usual.
Social players – the bridge committee has purchased 36 decks of cards and 12 bidding boxes for your use. They are stored in the closet across from the front desk. The cards are in a wooden box and the bidding boxes are in a cardboard box marked bridge supplies. Please return them to the closet when you are finished.
The annual lady’s bridge luncheon took place on October 17, but since I had to turn in this report by October 15, I will not have results until the December Newsletter. At the time of this writing there were over 40 signed up to play.
Duplicate players - if you need a partner for any regular Thursday game please call the front desk or email Mary Schmidt - mc.schmidt@verizon.net.
The annual Christmas party for bridge players and spouses is scheduled for December 20.
