What does a midwife do? National Midwifery Week is October 4-10, 2015; it seems an apropos time to attempt to provide an answer to the question. But first, let’s bust some myths! Midwife means “with women” and the women drawn to the practice of caring for other women continue a long tradition of caring, empathy, and advocacy for their fellow beings. The midwife approach to patient care is honorable, holistic and individualized. Myth #1-- Midwives only care for women during pregnancy and at the time of birth. FALSE. Midwives provide health care services to women in all stages of life, from the teenage years through menopause and beyond, including general health check-ups, screenings and vaccinations; preconception care, pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care; well woman gynecologic care; treatment of sexually transmitted infections; and most forms of contraception. Myth #2--Midwives only take care of low risk pregnancies and uncomplicated women’s health care. FALSE. Midwives work with all members of the health care team. We often co-manage patients with Obstetricians-Gynecologist when patients have chronic health concerns, high risk conditions, and medical complications or require surgery. We can refer patients’ to other health specialists if needed. Our patients’ receive the highest level of care while still receiving the individualized and personalized care the midwife provides. Myth #3--Midwives don’t prescribe medications or order tests. FALSE. Midwives are licensed to prescribe a full range of substances, medications, and treatments, including birth control measures and some pain control medications. They can also order needed medical tests within their scope of practice and consistent with state laws and practice guidelines. Myth #4--Midwives believe in natural childbirth so they don’t offer pain relief to women during labor. FALSE. Midwives are experts in how to cope with labor pain! They partner with you in managing your health care. During pregnancy, they help tailor your birth plan so that it best fits your personal needs and desires while ensuring optimal safety and care for you and your baby. Your midwife will explain your options at every step along the way including pain relief options such as relaxation techniques, movement during labor, intravenous narcotics, and epidural analgesia. And should any changes to your birth plan become medically necessary or if you change your mind about your wishes, your midwife will provide the information and the support you need to make decisions along the new path.
The state of Georgia recognizes Certified Midwives as needed practitioners, and their care is sought after in our state. At a time when our country’s high Cesarean section rate is cause for great concern, midwifery care may provide a key to helping to lower the climbing rate. The American College of Nurse Midwives outlines the following benefits of receiving midwifery care: • • • • • • • • •
Decreased risk of needing a cesarean Reduced rates of labor induction and augmentation Reduced use of regional anesthesia Decreased infant mortality rates Decreased risk of preterm birth Decreased third and fourth degree perineal tears Lower costs for both clients and insurers Increased chances of having a positive start to breastfeeding Increased satisfaction with quality of care
