… and Fertility and Longevity, too

Sandhill Sired bred baldy heifers vs. Black Angus bred heifers1

• 11.5% more calves per year

• 27% more in herd after five years (62% of the baldies remain in production)

• $418 more per cow**

Same commercial herd – Same location

1 Data reflects 47 Sandhill Sired black baldy heifers purchased in 2018-19 and 57 commercial black Angus heifers purchased in 2020.

Capturing Lost Opportunity

It’s easy to talk about weaning weights and what calves bring in comparison. Figuring out where major dollars are earned or lost requires a little more math.

Using the 11.5% advantage of baldy heifers in weaning rate, we calculated how much more they return in a 50-head herd, compared to straight black commercial heifers.

First, consider the immediate lost income:

11% fewer calves equate to 5.5 calves or 5.5 open cows

5.5 calves X average calf value at weaning of $2,400 per head = $13,200 + salvage value of 5.5 cows X average of $1,800 = $9,900

Next, figure the cost of replacing the 5.5 cull cows with replacement heifers: 5.5 X average weaned calf value of $2,400 = $13,200 + 5.5 X $800 per head for 1-year maintenance cost to grow and develop = $4,400 Net replacement cost = $17,600 or

The net cost of replacing the 5.5 cows and the lost 5.5 calves: Net lost income = $3,300

loss = $20,900 ** $418 per head loss across the 50-cow herd

These numbers have been validated by Dr. Bob Weaber, at Kansas State University

Feedlot Heart Failure

Genetics make a difference.

Bovine Congestive Heart Failure

(BCHF) in feedlot cattle toward the end of the finishing period is a growing problem. It is an untreatable, fatal condition involving pulmonary hypertension that culminates in rightheart failure.

“BCHF outbreaks are occurring in operations feeding well-managed, high-genetic-merit cattle. For some producers, it is the single most costly health-related problem with losses exceeding $250,000 annually in individual operations, even surpassing those from bovine respiratory disease,” according to USDA’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS).

By way of background, many cattle producers have heard about brisket disease, also known by other names, such as dropsy and high mountain disease. Broadly speaking, it stems from declining oxygen levels as altitude increases, due to atmospheric pressure. It is common in cattle above altitudes of approximately 5,000 feet. With less oxygen reaching the lungs, the pulmonary artery constricts, making it more difficult for the right side of the heart to pump the same amount of blood through the lungs. Fluid commonly accumulates in various body cavities and swells the brisket, thus the common moniker. Death from right-heart failure, due to pulmonary hypertension is a common result.

When feedlot cattle in the late stage of production at moderate and low elevations began dying of right-heart failure, exhibiting similar symptoms, many thought brisket disease was somehow the cause. Since then, research has proven BCHF is a different condition leading to similar symptoms and often death. Although the direct cause or causes remain unknown, cattle affected by BCHF experience heart remodeling like cattle affected by brisket disease.

Management strategies

Heart scores collected from BCHF-affected cattle at the packing house provide a phenotypic metric for gauging incidence and disease progression. Scores range from 1 to 5, with 1 being normal, and scores of 4 and 5 indicating late-stage congestive heart failure.

For perspective, Simplot Land and Livestock’s (SLL) packing facility, CS Beef Packers, has collected more than 100,000 heart scores since 2020. Of those, 50% show morphological changes that indicate a progression of BCHF; 4% of the animals with heart scores were classified as score 4 or 5, indicating late-stage heart failure. Justin Buchanan, Ph.D., an SLL geneticist, shared the data during his presentation at the 2024 Beef Improvement Federation Research Symposium.

“This is a real problem in the industry, which is why we are investing so much into developing selection tools we can use to address the problem,” Buchanan said. Their findings showed that while BCHF occurs in all breeds, beef breeds had higher concentrations of animals with high heart scores — specifically high percentage Angus — than beef-on-dairy. Within Simplot’s purebred herds, the mean expected progeny difference (EPD) values for heart score were 0.102 for Angus, -0.037 for Charolais and -0.003 for Hereford.

Likewise, all breeds of cattle are susceptible to brisket disease, but Hereford cattle exhibit more resistance, based on a lower percentage that fail Pulmonary Arterial Pressure (PAP) testing, a diagnostic measure used to determine individual animal risk for developing brisket disease.

Incidentally, the American Hereford Association (AHA) has collected heart

scores from cattle fed and harvested through its National Reference Sire Program and Hereford Feedout Programs. Average heart scores mirror the breed advantage identified in the Simplot research.

Based on the SLL population, heart score heritability was between 0.3 and 0.4, leading Buchanan to believe BCHF is a polygenic trait that selective breeding decisions can influence. He noted hot carcass weight was the most associated trait with BCHF at 0.4.

“When we use our selection indexes to drive carcass weight and growth, we are pulling those congestive heart failure cases right along with that selection,” Buchanan said. “So, if we don’t create a tool to select against this, it’s just going to get worse over time.”

SLL has created a tool, including an EPD for heart score and a commercially available screening test.

Buchanan explained SLL’s approach at the time included maximizing crossbreeding, replacing Angus bulls with Hereford bulls in their system for one to two years and screening all bulls, embryo donors and AI bulls for BCHF EPD prior to purchase.

“BCHF has become increasingly prevalent among feedlot cattle in the western Great Plains of North America with up to 7% mortality in affected herds,” according to 2022 research by Michael P. Heaton, research microbiologist at the U.S. Animal Meat Research Centers, et al. “BCHF is an untreatable complex condition involving pulmonary hypertension that culminates in right ventricular failure and death…” The study — Association of ARRDC3 and NFIA Variants with Bovine Congestive Heart Failure in Feedlot Cattle — aims to identify genomic regions associated with the disease.

SANDHILL FARMS — BULLS

Ensuring Reduced Heart Failure Risk

Heart scores collected by the American Hereford Association and other organizations over time document the breed’s reduced risk for passing along genes that contribute to the incidence of Bovine Congestive Heart Failure (BCHF).

Sandhill Farms knows the breed’s low-risk advantage is real. We also know the economic losses encountered by our commercial customers, who also utilize genetics from other breeds that are at higher BCHF risk. To help them manage the challenge and to document the advantage of our own genetics, we invested in Heart score EPD analysis of our bulls, which you will find in the EPD profile of this year’s offering. Overall, Sandhill bulls averaged in the top 23% for Heart EPD of all bulls from all breeds tested.

We also collected heart scores from calves sired by our bulls. In July of 2025, we harvested 94 head of our ranch-raised steers at National Beef, which were fed at Ford County Feedyard. They were a mix of Herefords and black baldies. Individual heart scores were collected in the plant at slaughter. All received a heart score of 1 or 2 (Good on the scale of 1-5), except for one black baldy that scored 4 (poor).

How to use the Heart EPDs

• You will find Heart EPDs listed on the right side of the blue shaded line of EPDs in this catalog. There is an actual EPD (smaller number is better) and also a percentile ranking (smaller number is better). Neogen provides Heart EPD analysis across all breeds, so the percentile ranking is also across all breeds. Consequently, a 50% ranking is average for Hereford, Angus, Red Angus, Charolais etc.

• Unless you have experienced heart failure in your herd, it should not be your first criteria. Use it in conjunction with the other traits that are important to you. As with other EPDs, we suggest you decide on a threshold and then focus on the other EPDs that affect the goals for your ranch.

We would like to invite you to look through this year’s sale offering. God has blessed us with another year in the cattle business. We hope that all we do will bring Him glory.

Our goal has always been to help our customers make more profit. The first few pages of this catalog are real world examples of how our genetics have performed. We are confident that we can help you have your cake and eat it too! Heterosis and fertility, while increasing carcass merit and performance. It has taken us a lifetime of breeding to get to this point because of our commitment to not leave any of the practical or visual traits behind.

We are lucky to have the space to run the bulls on large winter pastures. The bulls travel and exercise and are ready to go to work the day you purchase them. The feedback from our development has been great; even our customers in the southern heat comment about how well the bulls hold their condition as they work their first year. We greatly contribute that to them being conditioned to walk large pastures all during development.

The pages about heart EPD are another tool that we wanted to provide to you. We paid for all the bulls to have the genetic test run, in case we have customers that are needing to make improvements in their late-stage cattle feeding health. Give us a call if you have questions. Chances are, if you aren’t aware of the issue, you don’t need to make any genetic selection pressure for it.

Please give us a call or stop by so we can help you focus on the traits in the catalog that are relevant to your operation. When we learn about your operations, we can help guide you to the genetics that will best serve you.

Sincerely,

The following are currently DBP and are being tested. Lots 127, 130, 136, 143, 146, 148, 149, 151, 152, and 154. Results expected back around March 1. Web site will be updated as soon as results are back. All other lots are free.

The thinking behind this program is:

1. We will be keeping all of our registered heifer calves, thus we can turn our generations faster in the cow herd.

2. We will have time to identify the donors, flush embryos and use the genetics from these cows for our future, then offer them to you.

3. By selling cows with heifer calves, we can have some stability in our cow herd and gather data on the bulls for the following year’s sale.

4. We will identify the bottom end of the cows and cull for any reason necessary.

5. These cows will sell with complete performance and ultrasound records.

6. We will be giving you the opportunity to purchase the very top end of these young cows.

SANDHILL FARMS — FEMALES

COMMERCIAL BLACK BALDY PAIRS

Daughter and son-in-law, Courtney and JD Urish, are bringing a set of Black Baldy Pairs. They were bought in last year’s sale as open heifers. They have been bred to an Angus bull and will have calves at side. They will sell in groups of five (5), with the option to take them all.

COMMERCIAL OPEN HEIFERS

These 35 commercial Hereford open heifers are out of the heart of our commercial herd.

The 58 black baldy open heifers and 9 red baldy open heifers were raised at SHF or are consigned by our daughter and son-in-law, Brooke and Travis Warner, and his family. They are sired by SHF bulls and have been bred to be superior females. Heifers will sell in groups of five (5). Buyer has the option to take as many consecutive groups of five (5) as they want.

Glossary of Performance Terms

We are going to give you all the data we can gather and let you decide which bulls will fit in your program the best.

• Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) — The prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed from the same database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. EPDs are not to be compared between breeds.

• ACC — Accuracy is the reliability that can be placed on the EPD. An accuracy of close to 1.0 indicates higher reliability.

• Birth Wt. — The actual weight in pounds at birth.

• Adj. WW — Weaning weight adjusted to 205-days of age and adjusted for age of dam.

• Adj. YW — Yearling weight adjusted to 365-days of age and adjusted for age of dam.

• Weight Ratio — A direct comparison of one calf to all other calves in his contemporary group. 105 means that the calf performed 5% above group average for that trait and a 95 ratio indicates that the calf is 5% below group average for that trait.

• Contemporary Group — A group of cattle about the same age and given equal treatment.

Growth EPDs

• Birth Wt. EPD (BW) — Birth weight of animal’s progeny expected difference as compared to other animals from the same breed or database.

• Weaning Wt. EPD (WW) — Weaning weight of animal’s progeny expected difference as compared to other animals from the same breed or database.

• Yearling Wt. EPD (YW) — Yearling weight of animal’s progeny expected difference as compared to other animals from the same breed or database.

• Scrotal Circumference (SC) — Expressed in centimeters, this is a predictor of the difference in transmitting scrotal size compared to other animals from the same breed or database.

• Sustained Cow Fertility (SCF) — This is basically a longevity trait. The higher the number of the EPD, the greater the prediction that the daughters of the bull will make the age of 12. This encompasses all reasons to cull cows. Fertility, disposition, feet, eyes, udder, production, it is all included.

Maternal EPDs

• Dry Matter Intake(DMI) — As technology allows us to accurately measure the intake of cattle, this EPD is a genetic predictor of the amount of feed the bull’s progeny will eat. The higher the number, the more the cattle will eat.

• Maternal Milk (MM) — A predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires.

• Milk & Growth (M&G) — A predictor of a sire’s daughters for milk and growth. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and genetics for growth.

• Udder Suspension and Teat Size — UDDR EPDs are reported on the scoring scale. Differences in sire EPDs predict the difference expected in the sires’ daughters’ udder characteristics when managed in the same environment. Higher number is more desirable.

Carcass EPDs

• Back Fat (Fat) — A predictor of the difference in external fat thickness at the 12th rib.

• Rib Eye Area (REA) — A predictor of the difference in ribeye area.

• Marbling (MARB) — A predictor of the difference in intramuscular fat.

• Carcass Weight (CWT) — A predictor of the difference in carcass weight.

Breed Indexes

• Baldy Maternal Index (BMI) — Combination of weighted traits that affect the bottom line when mating the Hereford bull on black cows.

• Brahman Influence Index (BII) — Similar to BMI index, but weighted heavier for traits that will make Brahman cattle more profitable.

• Certified Hereford Beef Index (CHB) — Animal’s ability to perform in the feedlot and on the rail.

Ultrasound Adjusted Measurements

• Adj. % MARB — The percent intramuscular fat (marbling) adjusted to 365-days of age. Heritability for marbling is in the moderate range. The intramuscular fat in longissimus muscle of ribbed carcasses is the principal determinant of USDA quality grade in cattle slaughtered at less than 30-months of age. Heifers and steers in the 4% range of MARB will be close to making the Choice grade. Bulls if they were steers with a 3% MARB will also be close to the Choice grade. The difference is the influence of testosterone in the bulls’ system.

• Adj. REA — Each bull’s ribeye area measured in square inches and adjusted to one year of age. REA is used in the calculation of yield grade.

• Adj. Backfat — This is the backfat measured in inches adjusted to 365 - days of age. The BF thickness is directly related to the carcass yield grade.

• Rib Eye/cwt. — The is the adjusted REA divided by the hundred weight of the bull. The weight of the animal, which is affected by fill, body condition and others, can change this ratio greatly.

Dam’s and/or Progeny Production Records

• Birth Weight Ratio (BWR) — The number of calves a dam has had and their average birth wt. ratio. Example: 2-98 means the dam has had 2 calves with an average BWR of 98.

• Weaning Weight Ratio (WWR) — The number of calves a dam has had and their average weaning weight ratio. Example: 2-102 means the dam has had 2 calves with an average WWR of 102.

• Yearling Weight Ratio (YWR) — The number of calves a dam has had and their average yearling weight ratio. Example: 2-103 means the dam has had 2 calves with an average YWR of 103.

• Marbling Ratio (MARBR) — The number of calves a dam has had and their average wt. ratio. Example: 2-98 means the dam has had 2 calves with an average MARB of 98.

• Rib Eye Ratio (REAR) — The number of calves a dam has had and their average ratio. Example: 2-102 means the dam has had 2 calves with an average REA of 102.

• Fat Ratio (FATR) — The number of calves a dam has had and their average ratio. Example: 2-103 means the dam has had 2 calves with an average FAT of 103.

• DOB: Date of birth
