RAY RAMSEY PRESIDENT GEORGE SPRAGUE VICE PRESIDENT

AMY COWAN DIRECTOR OF YOUTH ACTIVITIES & FOUNDATION

BAILEY CLANTON AHA NATIONAL SHOWS COORDINATOR & YOUTH ACTIVITIES ASSISTANT

CHLOÉ DURIAN ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF YOUTH MARKETING & EDUCATION

The HEREFORD YOUTH FOUNDATION OF AMERICA (HYFA) was established in 2000 as a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) corporation dedicated exclusively to scholarship and educational support of youth in the business of raising Hereford cattle. The Foundation is governed by a board of directors who are heavily involved in the Hereford industry and who have a vested interest in educating youth, developing leadership and encouraging young people to return to production agriculture.
The MISSION of HYFA is to encourage, recognize and reward the development of life skills and values in the next generation of leaders by providing education, scholarship and leadership opportunities for Hereford Youth.
Trying to encapsulate an entire year of change and improvement has led me down two distinct paths. The first is where it all began. The Hereford Youth Foundation of America’s (HYFA) founding president, Bob Call, would be amazed at the breadth of activities and the growth of the overall balance sheet. It was Bob’s foresight, diligence and execution that led to combining all Hereford groups into the current structure of the foundation we know today.
The second path I can’t help but travel when reflecting on the past year, is the utmost importance of family. It can be family in a traditional sense, or the family you make through interactions within the community and the Hereford community is a family.
There is no denying the buzz and excitement within the beef cattle industry and more specifically the Hereford breed. Cattle prices are up, demand for the specific set of genetic improvement possibilities that Herefords bring to the table are up and the American Hereford Association (AHA) along with the sister organizations are poised to capitalize on these opportunities. I was asked several years ago to speak to a group of college students about what our family’s operation had done as far as a contribution to the industry. It didn’t take me long to think of the answer. We have always strived to responsibly raise high quality Hereford cattle and give back whenever and however we’re able. But, none of what we ever did could come close to what the Hereford breed has done for our family.
There is no comparison for the relationships built through interactions around Hereford cattle. It’s easy to find a common thread and like-minded passion for the industry and the people in it. If there was ever any doubt about that, it should be swiftly put to bed after watching the iconic dispersal of Churchill Cattle Company. Breeders from 47 states, Canada, Mexico and Australia came together in Manhattan, Mont., for the event. While the reason for us coming together was the sale, the conversation and comradery experienced by those who attended is hard to capture in words.

I would like to thank all the past and present HYFA board members and support staff at the AHA for helping us achieve these monumental goals we continue setting. As acting president, it is my personal goal to continue honoring our past by supporting and preserving our future. Looking back at the progress we’ve made, I can’t help but believe that together we are unstoppable, and the best is yet to come.
SINCERELY,
RAY RAMSEY HYFA PRESIDENT

NJHA MEMBERS FROM 19 STATES RECEIVED A SCHOLARSHIP IN THE FISCAL YEAR

23 UNIVERSITIES RECEIVED FUNDS FOR HEREFORD JUNIORS IN ATTENDANCE

$230,125 IN SCHOLARSHIPS WERE AWARDED THROUGH THE 20242025 FISCAL YEAR

FACES OF LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
Eighty-four NJHA members from 21 states came together at the Purina Animal Nutrition Center in Gray Summit, Mo., for a summer week they won’t soon forget. The 2025 Faces of Leadership conference invited them to slow down, look inward and discover what leadership truly means on a personal level. From the start, members were encouraged to uncover their own leadership style — to recognize their strengths, communicate with confidence and grow into leaders who lift others up.
On opening night, Mike Matheny — New York Times best-selling author and former MLB catcher and manager — set the tone with a message that stuck with the room. “People want to follow leaders who stay humble, stay hungry and always try to find better for those around them,” he said, challenging the group to lead with authenticity and intention.
Throughout the week, members heard powerful reflections from their peers as well. One standout moment came when Salem Sifford, NJHA chairman shared how the Hereford community shaped her own journey.
“I was never told I had to be one way or another to be a leader,” she said. “My Hereford family accepted me as I am and simply encouraged me along the way. I learned that it truly is all about the people that meet you where you are and encourage you. Sometimes being unique isn’t always key, but support, encouragement, acceptance and transformation are.”
Behind experiences like this is the quiet but powerful movement of HYFA’s leadership pillar. Thanks to the Coley-Malir Leadership Endowment and HYFA’s commitment to developing future leaders, Faces of Leadership continues to be a place where confidence grows, friendships form and purpose is discovered. This year, juniors were honored to have Rick Malir and Bonnie Coley-Malir join them for part of the conference, with Rick sharing his own leadership journey as a keynote speaker.
Faces of Leadership isn’t just an event, it’s a launchpad to success. And with HYFA behind it, the next generation of Hereford leaders is gaining the tools, support and inspiration to lead boldly in their communities and far beyond.

In April, college-aged NJHA members went to a place of reflection while in Desdemona, Texas. The Building On Leadership Development (BOLD) conference has quickly become one of the most meaningful experiences offered to Hereford youth, and it fits squarely within HYFA’s mission: to encourage, recognize and reward the development of life skills and values in the next generation of leaders.
BOLD isn’t about lectures or checklists. It’s designed to stretch young people in the best ways, helping them understand who they are, what they value and how they want to show up in the world.
For Rylie Meinhardt of Onaga, Kan., the power of this event was clear. “Building these connections through these speakers and industry professionals to launch you into your future is incredible,” she shared. “You get to ask personal questions that you might be hesitant to ask. But these industry leaders are so personable and care so much about encouraging our youth that they’re willing to answer any and all questions you have.”
Each year, just 20 NJHA members from across the country are selected to take part — not necessarily because they are already leaders, but because they’re ready to explore the kind of leader they want to become. Over the course of the conference, they dive into career exploration, strengthen communication skills and build the kind of relationships that last long after the weekend ends.
One of the most powerful moments came as the group wrapped up their time together. Tyler Norvell, executive director of the Oklahoma Youth Expo and Cattlemen’s Congress, asked a simple but grounding question, “What mindset do you choose to have, and what’s your ‘why’?”
BOLD exists because HYFA believes in that future. And year after year, these young leaders walk away with clearer direction, deeper confidence and a stronger commitment to carrying the Hereford legacy forward.

JUNIOR NATIONAL
They gathered their crews, polished their cattle, and stepped into the spotlight. The lights came up, the music played, and the 26th annual VitaFerm® Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) in Louisville, Ky., came alive with energy, pride and the unmistakable heartbeat of the Hereford youth community.
While the showring sparkled with competition, it was also a stage for leadership, legacy and recognition. Among the highlights was the awarding of the Bob Norton Excellence Award to Steven Green of Hodgenville, Ky. A first-generation Hereford breeder, Steven embodies the values that the late Bob Norton, BioZyme Inc.® CEO, held dear: integrity, dedication and a commitment to advancing the breed. Receiving this award marked a special milestone for Steven and his family, a moment reflecting both hard work and the mentorship and support that shape the next generation of Hereford leaders, while also recognizing the legacy of the man who this award honors.
Norton played an important role in developing the NJHA’s young leaders, like Green. And like Norton, Green understands how the inside of a barn can develop a young person. “I just think there’s no better place to start with kids than in a barn,” commented Green.
The spotlight on youth leadership and excellence continued with the GKB Cattle Youth Endowment recognition for the top five bred-and-owned females. Landry Allan of Nocona, Texas, walked away with the grand champion bred-and-owned female and a custom trailer — a testament to both skill in the ring and dedication to the Hereford breed.
From the cheers in the stands to the camaraderie behind the scenes, the 2025 JNHE wasn’t just a competition — it was a celebration of Hereford youth leadership, achievement and the future of the breed. And for leaders like Green and Allan, it was a reminder that dedication, passion and community create moments that last a lifetime.

JUNIOR NATIONAL HEREFORD EXPO
While the cattle may have stole the spotlight on the green chips, it was the contests beyond the ring that showcased the education and leadership pillars of HYFA. These experiences give NJHA members the chance to sharpen skills, build confidence and explore career pathways, all while learning from industry leaders and their peers.
The HYFA Scholarship, Awards and Maroon Jacket Ceremony reflected the leadership pillar of HYFA in action: mentorship, responsibility and the passing of experience from one generation of Hereford youth leaders to the next. Fifty-nine state delegates selected new young leaders to serve three-year terms, guiding an organization of more than 4,200 members. HYFA is proud of the responsibility and respect the NJHA board of directors has brought to the junior Hereford membership over the years.
Leadership and education converged to create more than just a competition, it was a week where young people learned, grew and stepped into roles that will shape the future of the Hereford breed. NJHA members presented their best performances, from the future professionals contest and newly added oral reasons contest to the highly competitive Hereford bowl. Exhibitors had these educational opportunities because of the support from HYFA.
Alongside these experiences, JNHE also honored its longtime partners. Sure Champ®, alongside VitaFerm® and the BioZyme Inc.® family, celebrated a milestone: 40 years of supporting Hereford youth and nearly 20 years as title sponsors, helping make opportunities like JNHE possible for generations of members.
At the JNHE, learning and leadership don’t just happen in classrooms or boardrooms — they happen in the ring, in the contest halls and in every handshake, speech and connection, guided by HYFA’s mission to educate, inspire and empower the next generation of Hereford leaders.

The Cottonwood tree is known for its towering trunk, sprawling branches and dense canopy that shelters everything beneath. Its strength lies in the deep roots that anchor and sustain its growth. In the same way, Tim and Nancy Keilty of Cottonwood Springs Farm in Cedar, Mich., have planted strong roots, while branching out through service and stewardship. Their Hereford journey has led to the creation of the new Cottonwood Springs Farm Global Education and Leadership Endowment administered by the Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA).
Nancy Keilty’s relationship with HYFA began in earnest when she donated a beautiful bronze art piece from her parent’s cattle ranch outside of Santa Fe, N.M., to be auctioned at the Music on the Mountain Capital Endowment Fundraiser in 2008. The auction was graciously hosted by Randy and Kelly Owen of Tennessee River Music Inc., and the bronze was purchased by the Vanier family, raising an impressive $23,000 to support Hereford youth. It was subsequently donated to the American Hereford Association (AHA) where it resides today on display at the corporate headquarters in Kansas City.
Shortly after in 2009, Nancy joined the HYFA Board of Directors and served faithfully and enthusiastically until stepping back in September, 2024. After 15 years of service and devotion to scholarship and education, she knew she wanted to leave a legacy and help HYFA support the next generation and generations after that.
Last fall, Nancy and Amy Cowan, AHA’s Director of Youth Activities and Foundation started the conversation and together crafted the idea for the new endowment. “I wanted to do something positive. We were throwing out ideas, and Amy brought up this global gift and I thought, that’s the ticket. I felt so excited about it,” Keilty explains. “I thought I could give these young adults an opportunity to see the world, see other agricultural practices, and I knew it would be something that they could bring back and use the rest of their lives and help others in the process.”
Hence, the Cottonwood Springs Farm Global Education and Leadership Endowment was created with the intent of supporting the Young Breeders Competition (YBC) held in conjunction with the World Hereford Conference (WHC) every four years in different locations around the world. The leadership endowment also includes funds set aside for a new global grants program that will allow National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) and AHA members ages 18-26 to travel internationally as part of a global agricultural education effort to build a pipeline of leaders in the Hereford industry.
“I think learning is lifelong,” Keilty says. “It is my hope that the stories and experiences that these young Hereford leaders bring back about

- NANCY KEILTY, COTTONWOOD SPRINGS FARM
who they met and what they learned will ignite, educate and inspire other Hereford youth every time they return from a trip made possible by this endowment.”
The learning is already taking shape in powerful ways as this new endowment and HYFA’s OXO World Traveler Scholarship Fund worked together to provide eight scholarships for Team USA members competing in the 2025 World Hereford Conference Young Breeders Competition this fall. In addition to travel scholarships, the funds helped create several learning moments for all eleven teams who came together on US soil to compete for champion honors.
Keilty was recognized during the Shaping the Breed’s Future: HYFA Scholarship and Awards Luncheon during the 2025 World Hereford Conference, the same luncheon where the teams competing in the Young Breeders Competition were announced, allowing her to see the endowment come to life.
“It was a historic moment for sure,” says Amy Cowan. “It was only fitting that as we honored Nancy for her tenure on the board, that International guests from 20 countries witnessed the power of the Hereford youth program and the donors like Nancy who make it all possible. I can’t thank Nancy enough for all she has meant to the foundation, the difference she has made and now for helping tell HYFA’s story of leadership and education to the world.”
Tim and Nancy Keilty have poured their time, energy and financial support into the core pillars of HYFA — scholarship, leadership, education and research. Their endowment strengthens the very foundation of HYFA, NJHA and AHA, pushing roots deeper and ensuring lasting support for generations to come.

NJHA FED STEER SHOOTOUT
The education pillar of HYFA is about opening doors that most young cattlemen and women never get to walk through. And there’s no better example of that than the NJHA Fed Steer Shootout, a program that pushes far beyond the backdrop of the showring and straight into the heart of the beef industry.
This year, 129 seedstock producers, NJHA members and commercial cattlemen from 24 states stepped up and enrolled more than 1,300 Hereford and Hereford-influenced cattle. But the real magic comes from what happens after the cattle are on feed.
Participants get an insider’s look at what truly drives the beef business — from genetic potential and feed efficiency to carcass value and marketing decisions that make or break profitability. As Trey Befort, American Hereford Association director of commercial programs explains, “By learning their herd’s genetic potential and understanding what performance traits cattle feeders and beef packers find the most valuable, producers can build a more effective marketing plan to make sounder marketing decisions year after year.
And then there’s the part everyone talks about: the NJHA Fed Steer Shootout Field Day.
This spring during the Field Day, more than 140 participants dove into everything from rations to carcass evaluation, meat fabrication, stress impact, calving-season economics and marketing grids. It’s hands-on, eye-opening and unlike anything else available to youth in the beef industry.
For Joe Schohr of Oroville, Calif., the experience was a game changer. “At the end of the day, we’re walking meat animals into the showring. We’re not just producing show cattle, we’re producing beef,” Schohr says. “Having the NJHA offer the chance to see this different facet of the industry has given me a new insight into careers in the meat packing and nutrition industry, as well as just getting to see the commercial side of the industry that I’m not necessarily exposed to on a daily basis.”
That’s the heart of HYFA’s educational pillar: creating rare, industry-leading opportunities that reveal the bigger picture and prepare Hereford youth for careers and futures beyond the backdrop.

HEREFORD RESEARCH FOUNDATION
The Research pillar of HYFA is all about building a stronger future for the Hereford breed, through innovation, data and real-world results. No one knows that better than Jerry Huth of Huth Polled Herefords, Oakfield, Wis.
For 62 years, Jerry has dedicated himself to raising top-notch Herefords and advancing breed performance. From serving on the AHA Board of Directors to guiding projects as part of the Hereford Research Foundation (HRF), he’s been instrumental in creating opportunities to test genetics, prove sires and improve the breed on a national scale. One standout example is the National Reference Sire Program (NRSP) at Olsen Ranches, where young sires are evaluated in real-world commercial settings — giving breeders invaluable data for smarter, more effective herd management.
In 2024, Jerry continued that legacy by supporting HYFA’s research pillar with a $10,000 gift during the Hereford Season of Giving. For Jerry and his wife Maryann, giving back isn’t about prizes or recognition — it’s about creating opportunities for the next generation of Hereford breeders and advancing the breed they’ve spent a lifetime building.
Even as Huth Polled Herefords marked a major milestone as they hosted the complete dispersal of their industry leading herd, Jerry and Maryann’s impact will continue ensuring that research, innovation and progress remain a cornerstone of the Hereford industry for generations to come. As the cattle with the famous Huth prefix continue to work across the country, Jerry and Maryann are enjoying spending some more time with their grandchildren and the third generation.
In the first Season of Giving three years ago, Huth was the lucky winner in the drawing for the Priefert chute. For the Huth’s this gift was a reminder to keep giving — not to win anything — but to create greater opportunities for industry youth while encouraging involvement within the future success of the breed.

The Bridging the Gap — College and Career Fair brings an educational and leadership component outside of the showring to the Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) and recently to the Faces of Leadership conference. Bridging the Gap is a tool that every high school and college age National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) member should take advantage of while attending the JNHE to get the conversation started about their college and career path. The program serves as a catalyst for building professional skills for junior members and brand representatives and college recruiters will be available to talk one-on-one with juniors and their families.
Young people learn about degree programs, scholarship opportunities, career possibilities and potential internships. At the same time, participating colleges and companies can mingle with some of the brightest young minds the industry has to offer.

HYFA and the staff at the American Hereford Association (AHA) assist with supporting and advising the NJHA board of directors. This team of junior members is a prime example of the leadership opportunities and life lessons that HYFA works to cultivate. Because of the GKB Cattle Youth Endowment, additional growth opportunities are made for the board members each year.
This board is comprised of 12 individuals who serve three-year terms and govern the more than 4,200 member junior organization. Each year, four new members are elected at the JNHE. During their term, directors develop and implement programs while hosting events that serve junior members from across the nation. During their tenure they travel to various activities, meeting fellow members and sharing their thoughts and experiences of Hereford involvement, while getting first-hand experience at leadership, cooperation and organization.

For the past three years, the AHA has welcomed two full-time interns to support all summer activities within the Youth Activities Department. One of these internships is made possible each year due to HYFA’s support. HYFA’s commitment to education and leadership development ensures that college students with a passion for the beef industry have access to a hands-on, professionally guided experience within a national breed association.
This internship provides a multi-faceted learning opportunity that blends event management, communications, youth leadership and real-world industry exposure. Interns play key roles in planning and executing major events, supporting junior show coverage and helping lead the NJHA board of directors and membership through the two largest events of the summer the JNHE and the Faces of Leadership Conference.

HYFA and the NJHA take great pride in providing learning opportunities that offer real-world application and industry exposure through the JNHE Ambassador Program. College students that do not have the availability for a full-summer internship may apply for the program, and if selected will assist the NJHA board and AHA staff during a three-week long internship. This mini-internship focuses on event management through all facets of the JNHE, working the duration of the show, along with the preand post-event preparations.
HYFA’s investment in internships and programs like the JNHE Ambassador Program is more than monetary support — it’s an investment in the future of the Hereford breed. These interns are the next generation of leaders, advocates and innovators who will help shape the beef industry for years to come.

The partnership between the Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA) and Priefert has grown far beyond a traditional sponsorship. Together, they’ve built a relationship rooted in shared values—supporting youth, strengthening brand recognition and preserving the Western way of life. From the iconic Priefert bucking chute at the 2024 VitaFerm® Junior National Hereford Expo to the generous donation of a new squeeze chute proudly stamped with the American Hereford Association (AHA) logo each year, Priefert’s presence is unmistakable. For Hereford breeders, it stands as a powerful symbol of partnership, tradition and mutual investment in the future.
“Sometimes you have those partnerships that come across your desk that just make sense, and for us, Hereford just makes sense,” explains Sara Rader, Priefert public relations coordinator. She is a prime example of how the company’s investment in the next generation paves a pathway to success for both Priefert and HYFA. Rader grew up in Mount Vernon, Texas in her family’s Rader Herefords operation. She was a member of the National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA).
“Our company’s very first piece of equipment was a headgate, so our roots are in the cattle business, and while we are really involved in the rodeo industry, when Hereford approached us, I took it and presented it and said, ‘While Hereford is my background, and I feel strongly about the Hereford breed, I also firmly believe it is a good breed and organization to be involved in.’ It wasn’t a hard sell for Priefert to want to be on board,” Rader explains.
Bridging her past and present, Rader is a familiar face at the annual NJHA BOLD conference, where she frequently represents Priefert in the career roundtables and speaks about the visible impact she sees in Hereford juniors from Priefert’s support.
“I think it’s so important to give back to our youth because they are our future,” Rader says. “It’s very rewarding and a little humbling to be able to speak to these youth in the breed and hear what their paths are, while introducing them to the Priefert brand and telling them the Priefert story, giving them a familiar face to recognize with our brand.”
The iconic Priefert brand and trademark blue color embody many of the same values of the Hereford breed — family, integrity, growth and a quality product. As a family-owned company with a large global impact, Priefert’s focus on sustaining the next generation will remain at the forefront.
The Priefert Junior Elite program exemplifies the importance of youth in the company’s mission. Now in its fifth year, this program focuses on developing future leaders in the sport of rodeo. Selected applicants receive a one-year partnership with Priefert, while also offering a training camp working with the Pro Team Athletes.
“For Priefert, it’s very important to pour into youth activities and events and make sure we’re giving as much as we can so we can help guide and aid the youth for the future,” Rader says.
As alluded to at the outset the most visible part of the Priefert partnership with the HYFA appears during the Hereford Season of Giving each December, when the company generously provides a Priefert chute, branded with the AHA logo, along with free trucking and delivery to the winner’s farm or ranch. Each donor to HYFA through the Season of Giving has a chance to win the drawing for the chute. Call it the bow tied on a successful calendar year for the NJHA and HYFA, with the help of Priefert.

“FOR PRIEFERT, IT’S VERY IMPORTANT TO POUR INTO YOUTH ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS AND MAKE SURE WE’RE GIVING AS MUCH AS WE

CAN SO WE CAN HELP GUIDE AND AID THE YOUTH FOR THE FUTURE.”
