The Buckeye Hereford Association presented its 2026 Merit Award at the Annual Meeting in Wooster, honoring Dwain and Connie Peak of Iberia, Ohio, for more than six decades of dedication to Hereford cattle and the people who raise them .
Dwain and Connie’s Hereford story began in Illinois, where Dwain showed Herefords through 4-H and FFA . Shortly after their marriage, they accepted the opportunity to manage the Kelly Bandmill Polled Hereford Farm in Bridgeport, Illinois . There, they gained their first professional experience breeding and raising registered Polled Herefords, caring for more than 350 brood cows, and overseeing the day-to-day operations of a large-scale operation During this time, they were also active in the show ring, including exhibiting at the 1965 Polled Hereford National at the Astrodome in Houston, along with other state and local shows The Kelly Bandmill program hosted production sales and field days, further shaping their expertise in both cattle production and promotion . When the Kelly Bandmill herd was dispersed after the owner’s retirement,

Dwain and Connie worked for a registered Angus operation for two years They later returned to registered Polled Herefords when they were recruited to help develop a major program in Ohio . In 1970, they relocated to manage the Rolling R Ranch in Galion, Ohio, where they grew the herd to more than 1,000 head over a seven-year period . Their leadership extended beyond the ranch . The Peaks were deeply involved in the Buckeye Polled Hereford Association during a time when it was recognized as the leading Polled Hereford association in the United States Connie served as
Secretary, and the association published Trends Magazine monthly while organizing production sales, shows, and promotional events that strengthened the breed and its membership
In 1978, Dwain and Connie purchased a 160-acre farm in Morrow County, Ohio, and established their own family Polled Hereford operation . They raised two daughters, Shelley and Mandy, who have also been active in the Polled Hereford industry in Ohio and nationally The Peak family has exhibited cattle across the country and has remained committed to breeding, raising, and promoting Hereford cattle, while continuing to support the cattle industry and agriculture
Upon receiving this award, Dwain and Connie shared the following message: “Thank you to the Association for this very special honor We have been fortunate to live a life in agriculture, especially raising cattle, and to experience the rewards that come with it . There is no better place to raise a family We are grateful for the friends and the people we have met throughout the Hereford industry Nothing is better Thanks again ”
The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) recognized Keayla Harr of Jeomsville, Ohio, as the 2026 Young Cattleman of the Year during the Buckeye Cattlemen’s Summit on Jan . 24, 2026 The event was held at The Ohio State University Wooster Campus, Shisler Conference Center, in Wooster, Ohio The award was sponsored by Select Sires Member Cooperative The Young Cattleman of the Year Award is presented to individuals or couples, typically under 40 years of age, who have demonstrated the early stages of a successful beef operation and shown strong leadership potential within the cattle industry . The recipient also serves as OCA’s automatic nominee to participate in the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association’s (NCBA) Young Cattlemen’s Conference
Harr is a second-generation cattleman who was raised on her family’s Hereford seedstock operation, J & L Cattle Services She grew up actively involved in 4-H and FFA and was heavily engaged in the National Junior Hereford Association, building a
strong foundation in the beef industry from a young age
Harr began her postsecondary education at Casper College in Casper, Wyoming, where she was a member of the livestock judging team She then attended Kansas State University, earning a bachelor’s and master’s degree in meat science Following that, Harr continued her education at Oklahoma State University, where she completed a Ph D program in meat science with a research focus on meat color
After completing her education, Harr began her professional career at E .R . Boliantz, a meatpacking company . She notes that her overarching goal in the beef industry is to ensure that meat animal protein remains a valued part of consumers’ diets Harr combines her meat science background with her family’s farming operation to help produce Hereford seedstock that is productive, practical, and delivers real-world value
In addition to her passion for meat science and cattle production, Harr is committed to youth development and hopes to further give back to the organizations that helped shape her and will influence the next generation of beef producers .
