2026 BULL SALE

Thursday, M ARCH 19, 2026 | 1:00 p.m.

At the Ranch – Musselshell, Montana

BAR STAR CATTLE Welcome

The Time Is Now

The time is now to celebrate what we as cattlemen and cattlewomen have dreamt about and many have prayed for — a market that rewards us for all the blood, sweat, and tears that we pour into our businesses and way of life. It sure is hard to believe that those hard times that we all suffered through have passed, and we are back in the driver’s seat in the protein business. Not only do we have the edge in cow numbers versus demand, but the price finally has reflected what we have worked so hard for.

That all being said, THE TIME IS NOW to utilize Hereford cattle for the added benefits of hybrid vigor. With these extremely valuable calves, not turning a Hereford bull on those black or red cows has never been a more costly mistake. We have seen customers increase their calf weights using Bar Star bulls by 50, and some stories of up to 125 lbs. per head at weaning by simply switching off the mainstream media and being told only black (or red angus) bulls for the commercial industry.

That extra 50 to 125 lbs. hits hard while staring down the barrel of feeder calf prices well over $4 a lb. and adds an extra $200 to $500 per head plus to your calf crop! Hereford bulls on black or red cows will literally pay their way in no time. Not to mention, the added advantages in fertility, longevity, and feed efficiency gained are icing on the cake.

If you are tired of your heifer calves selling way back from your steers, THE TIME IS NOW to gain back some value on the female side of your operation at market. We have seen time and time again this fall and winter that the black baldie female topped countless sales as bred heifers, bred cows, and open replacements. Not only did they top a lot of these sales, but they did so by some margin. So instead of sending your females on the truck, why not turn those baldie and brockle face females into financial premiums?

Did you know that we provide our sale as an avenue for our customers to market their F1 females through? If feed or logistics are problems we can help you to locate a development lot until sale day. If you are interested, please reach out to us. Because THE TIME IS NOW to celebrate our industry! Come celebrate with us on March 19th and utilize the genetics that will set you up for the long haul, and enjoy every second of the ride.

SIRE OF LOTS 1-8

Ranch
Musselshell, MT

Lot 1

This one gets us excited for the future of our program. Enterprise puts together a BUNCH of traits that normally don’t go together. A double-digit CED and negative birth number track to a big yearling spread but does all of this with a smaller mature cow weight.

When he walks across the scale his mass and volume calculate a ton of density and if you are like me, you will under guess his weight every time. Near 800 lb. 205-day weight and a 1374 adj. YW without excess frame! Then when we read his script, it really comes together.

Top 10% CED, BW, Teat, Udder; top 25% SC, Sustained Cow Fertility, Milk, M&G, MCE, Marbling, $BMI, and $CHB.

Aesthetically he’s got the double goggle, tucked in eyes, red neck, and red to the ground. His first calf Divergent heifer momma weaned him at 70% of her body weight at 6.5 months and bred back first cycle, punching her ticket into our near perfect uddered donor cow pen we are building.

He’s the kind that we have been told can’t be made … super-fast early growth in a moderate package at maturity. Nothing motivates us more to make antagonistic traits work together than those that say it can’t be done. Don’t just build your program with 5001, build your ENTERPRISE! Act. BW 79 lb.; Adj. If you come to the Bar Star for that massive width we strive for, and incredibly good look, hitch your wagon to this one His hard working first calf heifer mother and him are cover photo worthy that’s for sure! This first crop of Venture calves was even better than we expected 70 lb birthweight cattle being this dimensionally wide and deep Some say it can’t be done . We say sit back and watch Top 25% CE, MCW, and $BMI, top 10% BW, SC, Cow Fertility, and T/U This one is very aware of his surroundings and is a little more up headed than we prefer but is one good looking thick dude

I’d be willing to bet this one will breed a lot of heifers and cows in his lifetime . He’d be 200 lb heavier if he didn’t spend all day walking the fence in the lot or looking off in the distance at the cows He’s a shapely, good-looking dude that is great structured His first calf heifer dam is absolutely beautiful Top 25% percent in Fertility, Milk, Marbling, and $BMI while being top 10% in CED, BW, SC, smaller Cow Weight, and U/T Scurred .

This bull is a result of embryos purchased from our friends the Jones’ at Wildcat in Wisconsin When B . J asked if we would like to have this bull in the sale I jumped at the chance He’s a full brother to two of the high sellers from the 2025 sale to Burchill Cattle Co and Topp Herefords One of which we used heavily in our AI program last year and this one reminds me so much of him its crazy Great muscle, leg structure and body, in an attractive package One of two sons in the sale out of 410, the herd bull maker, who’s well surpassed $500K in gross sales with over 20 sons in purebred operations Look in here, he’s a chip off the block His full sisters in production here are phenomenal Top tier WW, YW, T/U, $BMI, %CHB, and a top 2% REA make this another rare one . PATERNAL GRANDAM OF LOTS 10-12

Lots 10-12

BAR STAR’s Adaptation of the historic Churchill program bloodlines! A combination of the famed 7098 cow from Manhattan and the most efficient cow family in Musselshell. These three full brothers are all Top 10% $BMI, Sustained Cow Fertility, Top 1% Teat and Udder, and do so with calving ease without sacrificing marbling in phenotypically pleasing packages.

MATERNAL POWERHOUSE, HIGH $BMI SON OF RED CLOUD

At Denver Chad got asked A LOT which was his favorite . An unfair answer due to the depth of the offering, but he thinks this one is maybe one of the most useful for us in the offering Negative BW cattle aren’t built like this one very often, regardless of breed His skeletal width starts down low with a wide track and leads up to an expansive chest floor, on a massive topped and big pinned individual Bulls aren’t supposed to come with a smooth, flat shoulder blade when they are as wide made as he is, but he pulled it off Here’s a head scratcher his growth numbers fell after genomics … I simply don’t believe it on one that’ll push an actual 365-day weight of over 1,300 lb The crazy part is this all comes with a donor dam that doesn’t weigh 1,350 lb in her peak best condition while heavy bred This is the efficiency forgotten in the beef industry To top it all off there’s only a handful of animals in the entire Hereford database with a 1 7 udder, 1 8 teat, and 39 milk, with a mature cow weight that low, a sustained cow fertility that high and a $BMI in the top 10% Then he’s got all the bells and whistles of a dark cherry red color, both eyes ring eyed, red necked, red to the ground all while packing a big pair of perfectly shaped testicles, a manly cresty neck and head and tucked in eyes We think he’s special, special Act. BW ET; Adj. WW 691 lb.; Adj YW 1,186 lb.

MATERNAL POWERHOUSE, HIGH $BMI SON OF RED CLOUD

Of the three full brothers this one is the deepest flanked and the easiest converter What’s that mean? If you don’t like feeding skinny cows over the winter this one’s daughters should be the shiny and easy doing kind Another calving ease bull that is so much more Use him on heifers or cows and you aren’t going to be disappointed Just like his full brothers he’s way past the top 1% of the breed for teat/udder and does this with some carcass at the same time He’s got a huge set of perfectly shaped testicles on him and a solid milk EPD He made the trip to Denver because of his fundamentals and his incredible structure with a lot of neat EPD pieces Act. CHURCHILL RED CLOUD 0376H ET — Sire of Lots 10-12

If you wanted to tie three full brothers together and have a beautiful set of calves that the buyers will fist fight for look in here at these three, he’s solid just like his brothers Consistent EPDs that don’t’ have a whole in them, double red eyes, great structure and feet, and I just can’t praise the cow enough She’s as perfect uddered of a cow as I have ever seen and she’s going to be 8 this year by sale time He’s solid and the kind that gets better every day of his life AN ABSOLUTELY STAGGERING COMBINATION of EPDs . If you search in the Hereford database, combining every maternal trait at his levels, he stands alone  Top 10% BW, MG, and MCW, Top 3$% Sustained Cow Fertility, well into the Top 1% for Teat and Udder, and does this with Top 1% Milk! Top 6% BMI! Rarely if not never have we come across one with EPDs like that all with incredible phenotype!

Hennessy picked a great heifer calf to buy, and her first calf proved it Great big top 25% $BMI Act. BW 82 lb.; Adj. WW 725

This one got A LOT of compliments at Denver In the cattle world it seems that we have hit a crossroads between paper and reality There’s a big contingency of breeders and apparently even some carload judges that think muscle appears solely on the EPD profile Meanwhile in Musselshell … we still know you can’t eat the paper, but you can use it to wipe if you are in a bind I digress … back to the bull This bull is simply put, an absolute powerhouse in any breed, more less an English one . He’s so wide topped and massive from behind We’ve made a lot of thick bulls over the years, but we have not made many as thick and dense as this dude Massive bodied, extremely easy fleshing and feet and bone size that are durable enough to pack around this beast To add to his value, he’s out of a beautiful Smoke Stack daughter who is still in production at nine and looks like she’s five , reference picture as a 4-year-old in the middle of a D4 drought) Top 10% WW, YW, SC, Udder, Teat, CW, top 15% REA and top 3% $CHB!

SIRE OF LOTS 19-22

Wow, what can I say about this freckle faced full brother to Nemeses other than he’s been one of the most fun bulls to ever watch develop in our lot He’s pushed on 4 lb weight per day of age a lot of the winter and that amounts to a huge 1,380 lb adj yearling weight Phenotypically he’s got a tremendous amount of deep, long muscle, and is an absolute belly dragger For once his actual performance and genomic EPDs lined up He’s way up there well past 1% and pushing towards the top of the breed in WW, YW, SC, and Carcass Weight He’s top 2% for $CHB! This bull does have VERY small scurs Act. BW ET lb.; Adj. WW 741/ET lb.; Adj YW 1,380 lb.

Of the four full brothers here is the one that combines those big $indexes together as well as any in the sale His full brothers have been wildly popular in past sales topping consecutive sales This one is one that draws your attention in the pen with a little extra frame, a soggy rib cage and a nice smooth muscle pattern With that dark red color, he’s as flawless in his script as any of the present and past brothers in this mating Here’s a top 1% bull in Carcass Weight, and $CHB! All while in the top 10% in $BMI, WW, YW, SC, MG, MCE, and udder Being in the top 25% in Milk, REA, and Marbling Others would start with him being a 14-trait leader but we simply say he’s a big country, big muscled, rancher bull with all the bells and whistles

We haven’t focused on making more horned cattle, but this crop of bulls makes us think twice 5005 leads the way MASSIVE muscle, and a rare super dark red color to go along with having those antlers To quote the photographer “that thing has GIANT legs” Here’s another instance of things that aren’t supposed to go together: Big stout bone with a 74 lb . actual birth weight, unassisted out of a first calf heifer He’s line bred for your advantage of consistency in his calf crop, while not intentional, it dang sure worked We can see that his top 1% SC EPD is accurate with his big nicely shaped testicles Good udder and teat EPDs and a top 15% marbling continue to add to his uniqueness We sure like this one and he’s got a great temperament to go along with it Act.

Our son Harrison has an incredible cow herd When this one came through the chute on AI day, I’m not going to lie, when he picked Fresh Prince to breed her to, I had my doubts, but I didn’t doubt the decision the second I laid my eyes on him on day one If you are tired of using easy calving bulls that when you look at the calves when they are born you are disappointed and have that feeling they will never grow enough to make the truck step up to tattoo 23 and take flight He was impressive as a 70 lb BW calf and now, he’s just as impressive in the bull pen Great bone work that leads to big, great feet Top 10% CE, BW, SC, Milk, MCE, Marbling, and top 25% T/U, MCW, $CHB, and still charts in there with a big $400+ BMI$ Phenotypically there is way more punch and grow there than on paper

When actual performance still matters! This one contends for one of the biggest actual performance bulls ever here with that huge 806 205-day weight and 1,390 at a year! All while residing his life in the Bull Mountains, with no silage piles for miles The raw skeletal width and massive muscle packed into this one is so dang hard to make He defines our program in so many ways: power, performance, pigment, scrotal size, great feet, and out of a beautiful uddered first calf heifer that was one of two in 2025 to make it to the donor category as a 2-year-old, and the first ever horned one we’ve flushed When they knock it out of the park like this one their first calf, it’s just wasting time not using them harder earlier in your program He’s smooth polled with a great eye and head on him Really solid birth to yearling weight spread with a solid WW EPD and good milk

HETEROSIS PAYS

MATERNAL HETEROSIS

Economic and production benefits associated with heterosis are documented by decades of industrywide research in commercial crossbreeding systems.

DIRECT HETEROSIS

Increased performance of the crossbred calf relative to the average of the straightbred parental breeds.

+ 1.9% Survival to weaning

+ 3.9% Weaning weight

+ 2.6% Post weaning gain

+ 3.8% Yearling weight

+ 2.2% Feed conversion

Increased performance of the crossbred cow relative to the average of straightbred females of the parental breeds.

+ 3.7% Calving rate

+ 3.8% Weaning weight

+ 38.0% Longevity

+ 17.0% Number of calves

+ 25.3% Cumulative weaning weight

Primary crossbreeding advantages are improvement of lowly heritable traits, such as those associated with reproduction, which are difficult to impact through direct selection pressure. Small, net-positive effects in multiple traits affecting commercial cow-calf profitability — pregnancy rate, calf livability, calf health, etc. — yield significant returns that are difficult to measure. Crossbreeding value is most visible in the increased number of calves (lifetime), cow longevity and cumulative weaning weight (lifetime).

Hereford Heterosis Pays More

Hereford genetics offer more crossbreeding power because they are the least related to other Bos Taurus breeds, as documented by the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC) 2000 Bull Project. Plus, Hereford’s unique, inherent genetic advantages compared to other breeds offer added breed complementarity, especially when crossed with Angus. Hereford advantages include: docility, fertility, feed efficiency in the pasture and feedlot, longevity, and production efficiency.

Hereford-sired black baldy female advantages:

• 7% higher pregnancy rate

• More calves weaned per cow exposed

• $51 more per cow per year in net present value (2009 calculation)

• 3.5% more average rate of return on assets

• 2 pounds less pasture forage per day while maintaining more body condition1

Black baldy cows require 1 acre less of moderate-quality forage per year compared to straightbred black Angus peers, according to Oklahoma State University research.1

Hereford-sired black baldy steer advantages:

• Heavier weaning weights

• Increased feed efficiency

• Lower cost of gain

• Lower feedlot breakeven

• $28 per head less feed cost across finishing period

Based on feed efficiency alone — breed differences documented by the USMARC — Hereford has a $51 per head advantage over the finishing period, when compared to Angus.2 Hereford’s economic advantage increases as feed costs rise.

Understanding Hereford EPDs

The American Hereford Association (AHA) currently produces expected progeny differences (EPDs) for 17 traits and calculates three profit ($) indexes. AHA’s genetic evaluation makes use of a Marker Effects Model that allows the calculation of EPDs by incorporating the pedigree, phenotypic and genomic profile of an animal. Animals that have a genomic profile will be denoted with a GE-EPD logo. The current suite of Hereford EPDs and $ indexes includes:

Calving Ease — Direct (CE)

CE EPD is based on calving ease scores and birth weights and is measured on a percentage. CE EPD indicates the influence of the sire on calving ease in females calving at 2 years of age. For example, if sire A has a CE EPD of 6 and sire B has a CE EPD of -2, then you would expect on average if comparably mated, sire A’s calves would be born with an 8% more likely chance of being unassisted when compared to sire B’s calves.

Birth Weight (BW)

BW EPD is an indicator trait for calving ease and is measured in pounds. For example, if sire A has a BW EPD of 3.6 and sire B has a BW EPD of 0.6, then you would expect on average if comparably mated, sire A’s calves would come 3 lb. heavier at birth when compared to sire B’s calves. Larger BW EPDs usually, but not always, indicate more calving difficulty. The figure in parentheses found after each EPD is an accuracy value or reliability of the EPD.

Weaning Weight (WW)

WW EPD is an estimate of pre-weaning growth that is measured in pounds. For example, if sire A has a WW EPD of 60 and sire B has a WW EPD of 40, then you would expect on average if comparably mated, sire A’s calves would weigh 20 lb. heavier at weaning when compared to sire B’s calves.

Yearling Weight (YW)

YW EPD is an estimate of post-weaning growth that is measured in pounds. For example, if sire A has a YW EPD of 100 and sire B has a YW EPD of 70, then you would expect on average if comparably mated, sire A’s calves would weigh 30 lb. heavier at a year of age when compared to sire B’s calves.

Dry Matter Intake (DMI)

The Dry Matter Intake EPD predicts the daily consumption of pounds of feed. For example, if sire A has a DMI EPD of 1.1 and sire B has a DMI EPD of 0.1, you would expect sire B’s progeny, if comparably mated, to consume on average 1 pound of feed less per day.

Scrotal Circumference (SC)

Measured in centimeters and adjusted to 365 days of age, SC EPD is the best estimate of fertility. It is related to the bull’s own semen quantity and quality, and is also associated with age at puberty of sons and daughters. Larger SC EPDs suggest younger age at puberty. Yearling sons of a sire with a .7 SC EPD should have yearling scrotal circumference measurements that average 0.7 centimeters (cm) larger than progeny by a bull with an EPD of 0.0 cm.

Sustained Cow Fertility (SCF)

The AHA’s new Sustained Cow Fertility EPD (SCF) is a prediction of a cow’s ability to continue to calve from three years of age through twelve years of age, given she calved as a two-year-old. The EPD is expressed as a deviation in the proportion of the ten-possible calving’s to twelve years old expressed as a probability. For example, the daughters of a bull with a 30 EPD would have the genetic potential to have one more calf by age twelve then the daughters from a bull with a 20 EPD. In other words, the daughters from the 30 EPD bull would have a 10% greater probability of having one more calf than the bull with a 20 EPD. This is equivalent to saying that the daughters are 10% more likely to remain in the herd to age 12.

Maternal Milk (MM)

The milking ability of a sire’s daughters is expressed in pounds of calf weaned. It predicts the difference in average weaning weights of sires’ daughters’ progeny due to milking ability. Daughters of the sire with a +14 MM EPD should produce progeny with 205-day weights averaging 24 lb. more (as a result of greater milk production) than daughters of a bull with a MM EPD of -10 lb. (14 minus -10.0 = 24 lb.). This difference in weaning weight is due to total milk production during the entire lactation.

Maternal Milk & Growth (M&G)

Maternal Milk & Growth reflects what the sire is expected to transmit to his daughters for a combination of growth genetics through weaning and genetics for milking ability. It is an estimate of daughters’ progeny weaning weight. A bull with a 29 lb. M&G EPD should sire daughters with progeny weaning weights averaging 19 lb. heavier than progeny of a bull’s daughters with a M&G EPD of 10 lb. (29 minus 10 = 19 lb.). It is equal to one-half the sire’s weaning weight EPD, plus all of his MM EPD. No accuracy is associated with this since it is simply a mathematical combination of two other EPDs. It is sometimes referred to as “total maternal” or “combined maternal.”

Maternal Calving Ease (MCE)

MCE EPD predicts how easily a sires daughters will calve at 2 years of age and is measured on a percentage. For example, if sire A has a MCE EPD of 7 and sire B has a CE EPD of -3, then you would expect on average if comparably mated, sire A’s daughters would calve with a 10% more likely chance of being unassisted when compared to sire B’s daughters.

Mature Cow Weight (MCW)

The MCW EPD was designed to help breeders select sires that will either increase or decrease mature size of cows in the herd. The trait was developed after years of cow weight data collection and the EPD relates directly to the maintenance requirements of a cow herd. For example, if sire A has a MCW EPD of 100 and sire B has an EPD of 85, then you would expect the females of sire A, if mated to similar cows, to be 15 lb. heavier at mature size.

Udder Suspension (UDDR)

UDDR EPDs are reported on a 9 (very tight) to 1 (very pendulous) scoring scale.

Differences in sire EPDs predict the difference expected in the sires’ daughters’ udder characteristics when managed in the same environment. For example, if sire A has a UDDR EPD of 0.4, and sire B has a UDDR EPD of -0.1, the difference in the values is 0.5, or one-half of a score. If daughters of sires A and B are raised and managed in the same environment, you would expect half a score better udder suspension in daughters of sire A, compared to sire B.

Teat Size (TEAT)

TEAT EPDs are reported on a 9 (very small) to 1 (very large, balloon shaped) scoring scale. Differences in sire EPDs predict the difference expected in the sires’ daughters’ udder characteristics when managed in the same environment. For example, if sire A has a teat size EPD of 0.4, and sire B has a teat size EPD of -0.1, the difference in the values is 0.5, or one-half of a score. If daughters of sires A and B are raised and managed in the same environment, you would expect half a score smaller teat size in daughters of sire A, compared to sire B.

Carcass Weight (CW)

Carcass weight is a beneficial trait when considering the impact that pounds have relative to end product value. At the same age constant endpoint, sires with higher values for carcass weight will add more pounds of hot carcass weight compared to sires with lower values for carcass weight. For example, if sire A has a CW EPD of 84 and sire B has a CW EPD 64, then you would expect the progeny of sire A, if harvested at the same age constant endpoint, to have a 20-lb. advantage in terms of hot carcass weight.

Rib Fat (FAT)

The FAT EPD reflects differences in adjusted 365-day, 12th-rib fat thickness based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle. Sires with low, or negative FAT EPDs are expected to produce leaner progeny than sires with higher EPDs. Ultrasound measures are also incorporated into this trait and have been shown to be highly correlated with the performance of slaughter progeny. All data is expressed on a carcass scale.

Ribeye Area (REA)

REA EPDs reflect differences in an adjusted 365-day ribeye area measurement based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle. Sires with relatively higher REA EPDs are expected to produce better-muscled and higher percentage yielding slaughter progeny than will sires with lower REA EPDs. Ultrasound measurements are also incorporated into this trait and have been shown to be highly correlated with the performance of slaughter progeny. All data is expressed on a carcass scale.

Marbling (MARB)

MARB EPDs reflect differences in an adjusted 365-day marbling score (intramuscular fat, [IMF]) based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle. Breeding cattle with higher MARB EPDs should produce slaughter progeny with a higher degree of IMF and therefore higher quality grades. Ultrasound measurements are also incorporated into this trait and have been

shown to be highly correlated with the performance of slaughter progeny. All data is expressed on a carcass scale.

Baldie Maternal Index (BMI$)

The Baldy Maternal Index is a maternally focused index that is based on a production system that uses Hereford x Angus cross cows. Progeny of these cows are directed towards Certified Hereford Beef. This index has significant weight on Sustained Cow Fertility, which predicts fertility and longevity of females. There is a slightly positive weight on Weaning Weight, Mature Cow Weight and Milk which accounts for enough growth but ensures females do not increase inputs. There is some negative emphasis on Dry Matter Intake, but a positive weighting on Carcass Weight which is anticipated to provide profitability from finishing of non-replacement females and castrated males. Marbling and Rib-eye Area are also positively weighted to keep the harvested progeny successful for CHB. This index is geared to identify Hereford bulls that will be profitable when used in a rotational cross with mature commercial Angus cows. Brahman Influence Index (BII$)

The Brahman Influence Index is a maternally focused index that is based on a production system that uses Brahman x Hereford cross cows. Progeny of these cows are directed towards a commodity beef market since Certified Hereford Beef does not accept Brahman influenced cattle. This index has significant weight on Sustained Cow Fertility, which predicts fertility and longevity of females. There is a slightly positive weight on Weaning Weight, Mature Cow Weight and Milk which accounts for enough growth but ensures females do not increase inputs. There is some negative emphasis on Dry Matter Intake, but a positive weighting on Carcass Weight which is anticipated to provide profitability in finishing non-replacement females and castrated males. Marbling and Rib-eye Area are also positively weighted to keep harvested progeny successful for a variety of commodity based programs. This index targets producers that use Hereford bulls on Brahman influenced cows.

Certified Hereford Beef Index (CHB$)

The Certified Hereford Beef Index is a terminal sire index that is built on a production system where Hereford bulls are mated to mature commercial Angus cows and all progeny will be targeted for Certified Hereford Beef after the finishing phase. This index has significant weight on Carcass Weight to ensure profit on the rail. As well there is a positive weighting for Average Daily Gain along with a negative weighting on Dry Matter Intake to ensure efficient pounds of growth in the finishing phase. Keep in mind, this production system takes advantage of complimentary breeding with the commercial Angus cow. Although Marbling is weighted positively in this index, a positive weighting for Rib-eye Area and a negative weighting for Back Fat are a greater priority in this index to allow for optimum end-product merit. This is the only index that has no emphasis on fertility. Remember that no replacement heifers are being retained.
