B&D Herefords | The Season Opener

Page 1

Welcome to our 40th Annual Season Opener Sale. Over the past 50 plus years we have built a high performance cowherd that weans a high percentage of bodyweight. We have prioritized efficiency and performance.

As has been much discussed, we are in unprecedented times in the cow-calf industry. All signs point to calf prices staying elevated, and as many of our customers have realized, “pounds pay the bills”. Selecting genetics that will maximize profitability at either weaning or yearling time has allowed our bull customers to experience some of their best times yet.

Where we at B&D Herefords & Angus truly pride ourselves is on the maternal side. While the steer calves sired by this bull offering will put you on the top end when you market them, where these bulls set themselves apart is siring replacement daughters. The U.S. cowherd inventory remains at historic lows, and we are starting to see the cowman keep daughters back to build herd numbers. Pay close attention to the data on the bulls selling. We keep a close watch on the maternal production on each one of these dams, and most of these bulls come from cows & cow-families that are strong producers at weaning time. This highly heritable maternal production ensures that the daughters from both our Angus & Hereford bulls will sire females with longevity & strong maternal traits.

As we always do in our Season Opener Sale, we are selling a select group of commercial spring pairs, both Black Baldy & Angus. These females are backed by the same great maternal performance & genetics as our bulls. With current female demand, we are confident these pairs will make foundation cows for their new owners.

As always, the bulls & cows will sell on video, and we will be live on DVAuction for sale day. We welcome visitors to the ranch anytime to view this set of genetics, and if at anytime you have questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

We look forward to seeing you at The Season Opener!

Sincerely,

620-786-9703

Craig

• The best way we know to lead off the Hereford bull division is with this 2172K son. This Spring represents the first of the aged sons of his to sell and you can see why he was our selection from Cooper’s in 2023.

• 2172K was the #1 WW & YW bull in that sale and he passes that amazing performance along to his progeny. This bull ratioed a whopping 123 at weaning time and is in the top 20% for his calving ease & marbling.

• The 001 sons have been crowd favorites the past couple of years and when you see the performance behind this bull, you get it!

• He’s backed by one of the top cows on the ranch, ratioing a massive 111 on 8 calves on her nurse ratio.

• A little twist in this foundation mating. We raised his dam that is a direct daughter of the immortal 4158P donor of Holden’s.

• This mating to the 5104 is about as maternal as you can get. 5104 daughters have been the cornerstone of our herd for a decade and this sire will continue that tradtion wherever he goes.

• Performance bull with exceptional calving ease. Recommended for heifers. • His dam sold to Landon Doyle.

B&D L1 DOMINO 4166

• One of the favorites here at the ranch, this bull checks a lot of boxes.

• Moderate calving ease with excellent growth & carcass.

B&D ADVANCE 4214

B&D ADVANCE 4235

• His first calf dam ratioed 107 at weaning and is poised to be another top performer here at the ranch.

• Triple digit growth EPD with strong marbling.

• The last of the 2172K sons in the offering, he was still in the top third of the calves at weaning time.

• His dam sold to Landon Doyle.

B&D HEREFORD YEARLING BULLS

• We start the yearling bull division with a set of ET brothers backed by a great donor here at the ranch. We purchased her dam, 1106Y, in 2017 and she was then bred to 420B, and this great cow was the result. Flushing her to 0011H was a no brainer and these three full brothers show you why. They offer the highest carcass numbers in the entire offering, possess great growth along with tremendous eye appeal.

B&D ADVANCE 520 ET

• New sire group!

B&D HEREFORD YEARLING BULLS

• 3197L was our pick in ‘24 at Cooper’s and he was one of the top WW & YW bull in that sale. Along with his moderate calving ease, he passes along great pigment & maternal traits.

• Out of a first calf heifer.

• Another new sire group! 3052L was the #1 in past Holden sale for performance. He posted an adj WW of 894 & YW of 1560 and was a huge performer for his carcass traits. He’s poised to make a huge impact on the breed and these three sons are a preview of that.
