The 58th Annual North Carolina Hereford Classic is Dedicated to Peggy Blinson, Nancy Shanks and Linda Davis

Over the last 50 years, there have been many changes in the Hereford Industry, and North Carolina is no exception. We have transitioned from a sale where the perceived value of the animals is determined by a judge on the morning of the show to one where scientific data is combined with the expertise of experienced breeders, allowing them to select animals that will benefit them the most. We have gone from two separate associations to one unified body. We have seen generations turn over and new people come and go.

One constant, however, has been the bedrock of the Association. Whether serving coffee and donuts the morning of the sale or selling cookbooks, three faces were constant and dependable. These three women saw past the champion heifer or the cow with the highest CHB. They saw the future, and the quarters for coffee and the checks for cookbooks supported the youth. Their efforts supported over 50 queens and princesses, including 3 National Queens from North Carolina: Kim (Shanks) Herman, Crystal (Kirby) Mitchem, and Melanie Fishel. They supported numerous National Junior Hereford Council Board Members, including 3 National Junior Chairmen: JD Shanks, Bryan Blinson, and Rossie (Blinson) Stephens. They collected and served treats at numerous regional shows and judging contests, among countless other events.

While the recognition they revered the most has always been for the crown, the gavel, or the banner that one of their North Carolina “kids” earned, it is high time for their recognition! The dedication of this sale is a tribute to the dedication that Nancy Shanks, Peggy Blinson, and Linda Davis have for the youth who have been so greatly impacted by their service. Because of their support, not only have lives been changed, but the Hereford Breed, the Cattle Industry, and Society have been changed for the better through the generational service provided by these women. Changes were made that may not have occurred had they served one less cup of coffee or sold one less cookbook. When the North Carolina Pollettes or North Carolina Hereford Women are mentioned, these three immediately come to mind as they should.

Nancy Shanks, wife of Dr. Jack Shanks (Doc) and mother of JD Shanks and Kim Herman. When Doc and Nancy moved to North Carolina from Maryland, she jumped into the Pollettes with both feet, bringing fresh ideas from her many contacts throughout the country. She not only served North Carolina but also served as a Board member at the National level.

Peggy Blinson, wife of Keith Blinson and mother of Bryan Blinson, has served the Pollettes and Hereford Women for over 50 years. She spent most of the time as Treasurer, ensuring that the financial support was sound.

Linda Davis, wife of Jim Davis and mother of Chad Davis, has served in every office of the Pollettes and Hereford Women and been an organizer extraordinaire.

As you think of their bios, note the Mother part. Each of their own children had successful youth careers with many accomplishments within and outside the borders of North Carolina. Their care and guidance have seen the next generation achieve arguably even greater success. Their biological children were what brought them into the Association, but all of their other “kids” kept them there. It is hard to imagine what the NC Hereford Association, the Hereford Industry, the cattle industry, and the lives that were enhanced might have looked like, had these three Giants not been there with hugs, kind words, quarters, and dollars when they were needed the most.

1. TERMS: Cash. Each animal to be sold to the highest bidder. The auctioneer shall settle any disputes as to bids.

2. All animals sold in this sale shall be subject to the applicable laws, rules and regulations for the state of North Carolina and all rules or regulations of any agency of the state of North Carolina.

3. Announcements at the sale ring by the owners or the auctioneer concerning the cattle will take precedence over statements in the sale catalog.

4. All persons who attend the sale do so at their own risk and the owners or management assume no liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents that may occur.

5. The auctioneer (Dale Stith) acts only as agent for the sellers.

6. Health papers will be available for cattle to be shipped interstate.

7. No service AI certificates will be furnished.

8. Delivery: The sellers will make every attempt to assist buyers in hauling at the lowest possible cost.

9. Insurance will be available through Harding and Harding. Please see the auctioneer for insurance.
