The Michigan Beef Expo Committee is pleased to recognize Maury Kaercher of Kalamazoo, Michigan, with the Industry Excellence Award for his lifelong accomplishments and significant contributions to the Michigan Beef Expo and the Michigan agriculture industry.

Maury grew up on a small family farm in southwest Michigan, where his passion for agriculture began. After graduating from high school, he enrolled in the MSU AgTech program, completing the two-year curriculum in 1965 with a specialization in livestock. He then served five years in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, Maury returned to Michigan State University and earned his bachelor’s degree in animal science.

While at MSU, Maury was highly involved in the Block and Bridle Club and participated on the Meats Judging and Livestock Judging Teams. After graduation, he built a diverse career in agriculture, working as a vocational agriculture teacher, district representative, cow-calf operator, and community 4-H leader.

In 1984, Maury joined MSU Extension as the Kalamazoo County agriculture extension agent. He later transitioned to an area livestock agent covering multiple southwest Michigan counties in 2003 and became MSU Extension Director for St. Joseph County in 2006, a role he held until his retirement in 2011.

Maury dedicated more than 25 years of service to the Michigan Cattlemen’s Association, including serving as president from 1999–2000 and being named MCA Member of the Year in 2002. As both an Extension educator and MCA leader, he played a key role in establishing Michigan’s first graded, vaccinated, and verified feeder calf sales. He also served on the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association International Marketing Committee.

A strong advocate for the Michigan Beef Expo, Maury chaired the trade show committee for several years and was instrumental in the Expo’s growth into the premier event it is today. In 2023, he helped organize a reunion of MSU livestock judging teams, bringing together nearly 100 members spanning generations.

Maury retired after 28 years with MSU Extension, leaving a lasting legacy of leadership and innovation. Throughout his career, he and his family maintained a cow-calf operation of approximately 60 head. Maury has been married to his wife, Nancy, for over 57 years. Together, they proudly support the next generation of Spartans. The Michigan Beef Expo is honored to recognize Maury Kaercher.

A bull we were fortunate enough to acquire alongside a donor cow purchase this past spring from Buck Cattle Company has been a standout since he jumped off the trailer. Working from the ground up, he stands true, wide-based with large feet and legs. From there, he provides an impressive look from the side and doesn’t disappoint as you move behind him, proving to be stout-hipped, big-backed with extra capacity. Couple all that with his stacked pedigree being sired by NJW 119E 142 PROUD 35L, and going back to HAPP Kool Aid Points 1218 ET. The sky truly is the limit with a combination bull like this.

Super complete, sums up this bull. He is everything you need in a bull. He is thick, sound, and deep, with the ability to get out and move off of both ends. He is out of the very popular Leader 182F. A bull that is known for his maternal traits and producing cattle that are competitive on the national level. His mother is a daughter of MSU BR Markette 55N, a multiple time National Champion. If you need a bull that will increase WW, YW, M, and REA, look no further. The MSU BR Markette 55N bloodline is still producing quality cattle 26 years later.
