Advance Kansas brings together leaders from all sectors of the community to create and strengthen relationships and to build skills for addressing diversity, equity and inclusion challenges and opportunities. The leaders invited to participate in Advance Kansas represent a dynamic group of people who are engaged in the community and committed to progress. These decisions makers are influential in their groups, teams and organizations as well as the broader community. In Advance Kansas they learn about the consequences of diversity “blind spots,” the importance of suspending assumptions, and the power of leveraging collective objectives to build employee engagement and achieve better results.

A Diverse, Well-Prepared Body of Leaders Can Make a Difference Far from a traditional diversity training class, Advance Kansas focuses on equity and inclusion across a broad array of diversity dimensions, including race, gender, age, sexual orientation, physical and mental characteristics, geographical origins, culture, knowledge, experience, perception, etc. The class consists of five workshop days over a five-month period. Workshop days include class discussions and exercises designed to maximize interactions and facilitate the development of productive relationships. Participants especially value the open and safe environment for discussing, exploring and addressing complex diversity issues. As an important part of the Advance Kansas experience, teams of participants meet between workshop days to accomplish projects in the community. In the course of doing so, relationships are developed and strengthened and participants gain a deeper understanding of issues, challenges and opportunities facing the community.

A Message from Juan Johnson For more than 10 years it has been my honor and privilege to serve as designer and facilitator of Advance Kansas. This innovative leadership program is unique in several ways. First, it recognizes and demonstrates how diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) drive greater group performance and organizational results. While compliance with laws and organizational values remains the first priority of DEI initiatives, Advance Kansas offers frameworks, tools, and examples that also help leaders appreciate the performance benefits of DEI. Second, it addresses complex and sensitive real-time issues that organizational leaders are grappling with in the current environment. Employees and stakeholders are increasingly pressing their organizations to engage in issues that are important to them but external to the workplace. Leaders must develop the skills to respond to these new expectations. Third, Advance Kansas brings together leaders from all sectors of society: business, education, government, faith-based, nonprofit, etc. The diversity of roles, experiences, and perspectives of these leaders provide excellent opportunities for learning and relationship-building across community segments. Lastly, by requiring participants to apply what they learn to real-time challenges facing their communities, Advance Kansas becomes an action learning experience that leaves a lasting positive impact on both the participants and the broader community. Juan Johnson is president of the Atlanta-based consulting firm Diversity Leadership in Action™. Juan started this venture in 2006, following an extraordinary 21-year career with the Coca-Cola Company. While at Coke, Juan held a number of key management positions in highly visible areas. Highlights of his tenure include being elected a full Corporate Vice President by Coke’s Board of Directors at the age of 35, making him one of the youngest board-elected Vice Presidents in the company’s history; and serving as the Company’s first Vice President for Diversity Strategies, reporting directly to the CEO. Juan’s business-focused approach to diversity is rooted in his accounting and finance background. He achieved CPA and CMA certifications; holds an MBA from Atlanta University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from Southern University. Juan is a senior distinguished fellow of the Richard W. Riley Institute at Furman University, where he also serves as designer and facilitator of South Carolina’s statewide Diversity Leaders Initiative. A Powerful Network Committed to Progress Each year, a class of leaders from all sectors of the community is selected to take part in the Advance Kansas initiative. Advance Kansas graduates become Advancers, members of a powerful, cross-sector network of leaders who differ in every aspect of diversity, yet share a common commitment to progress in Kansas. We are currently seeking applications from leaders who wish to participate in Advance Kansas, Class XIV. Applications are due December 1, 2021.

Application & Selection Process Step One: Review the schedule and clear your calendar to ensure you are available to fully participate in the program. Step Two: Email advanceks@butlercc.edu to request a link to an online application form and complete the form. If you are unable to apply online, complete and return the form in the back of this booklet. Step Three: Individuals selected to participate will be notified of their acceptance in early December. At that time you will receive instructions for completing the registration process and an invoice for the registration fee.

Registration Fee Financial and in-kind support from sponsors help keep Advance Kansas affordable for everyone. While the actual cost per person is much greater, the registration fee is $750. A limited number of partial scholarships are available to individuals requiring further financial assistance.

Advance Kansas Community Projects Advance Kansas participants apply what they learn as they work in teams to complete projects addressing realtime community issues. Shown below are a few of the dozens of projects carried out over the years. While the nature of projects varies widely, the intent is always to positively impact the community and enrich the lives of people who live here. Dream Keepers The Dream Keepers project began in the 2018 Advance Kansas class when two community action project teams worked to create STEM Days. The goal was to engage and inspire 7th grade students about careers in STEM. STEM Days were piloted during the 2018/19 school year in two Wichita middle schools and represented four industries: aerospace, automotive, construction, and public utility. Materials were developed and hands-on activities presented to introduce these STEM careers. Two new Advance Kansas teams built on the project during the 2019/20 school year as they developed a tool kit for industry ambassadors on how to represent their field at STEM day as well as expanding STEM Days to three additional Wichita middle schools. Through this initiative a host of industry professionals have helped more than 1,100 7th grade students in five schools learn about STEM careers. A 2020 Advance Kansas team developed an 8th grade STEM Career Day program to expand on what students learned in 7th grade. Industries will provide hands-on activities as well as information on possible career paths and education needed to obtain these positions. Dream Keepers is being sustained by USD 259’s district partnership team.

New Leaf Book Mercantile The Advance Kansas team worked with New Leaf Mercantile, a social enterprise of Union Rescue Mission, to create a business strategy. New Leaf Mercantile resells donated books through online channels and uses the proceeds to support the work of the Mission while providing opportunities for men at the Mission to gain job experience through apprenticeships. The Advance Kansas project team worked with the store manager to create a self-sustaining business model that supports ongoing growth, including a robust apprenticeship program. The team offered operational recommendations, facilitated valuable connections with Amazon and DHL, created tools for tracking and onboarding new apprentices, and plans to continue working with management to complete a formal business plan.

Historic Dunbar Theatre Wichita’s Dunbar Theatre opened in 1941 and until 1963 served as the only movie theater available to the African American community. Having fallen into decline, there has been a recent effort to revitalize the theater and help make it an economic catalyst for the McAdams neighborhood. The team’s goal was initially to help the Dunbar Theatre create a fundraising plan but has expanded to the creation of a community fundraising resource legacy project.

Advance Kansas Community Projects, continued Raise My Head Foundation This project team helped the Raise My Head Foundation create a retail plan for their locally made products. The Raise My Head Foundation provides women who are breaking free from sex trafficking a safe residence to heal and acclimate back to normal society. They have started a cottage industry to provide employment skills, a paycheck for residents, and program sustainability by producing and selling all-natural skincare products such as body creams, lotions, scrubs, and more. With Covid limitations, the team still managed to place a KWCH news story about the program that can be used any time for promotion, brainstormed ways to promote their products, conducted research on getting UPCs placed on their products, and located retailers willing to place their products.

Starkey Inc. This Advance Kansas team worked with staff at Starkey to develop a community access program to expose the individuals that Starkey serves to diverse, engaging, inexpensive, and convenient opportunities within the community. It consists of a call to action for community residents to share their talents and resources with the organization, specific activities to engage in, and a proposal for how the organization can partner with local high schools to the benefit of all in the future.

Curb Painting Project Many homes in Wichita do not have visible house numbers. Numerals fade, get painted over, or just fall off costing First Responders valuable time as they rush to residential emergencies. This can mean the difference between life and death. The curb painting project painted house numbers on curbs in a Wichita neighborhood.

Diversity Toolkit

Diversity Toolkit An Advance Kansas team developed and populated an online diversity toolkit with content and worked on a plan to share and sustain it. The toolkit can be found online on the Wichita SHRM chapter’s website and their Diversity & Inclusion committee will ensure the toolkit retains validity and value.
