Fifth Annual City’s Best
It’s been 10 years since I was asked to publish City Magazine, and boy, has it come a long way. As I was reading through final edits of this City’s Best issue, I couldn’t help but be amazed by the final product. Once you flip through the pages, I think you’ll agree that my staff, whom I have the pleasure of working with every day, has gone above and beyond. Not only is this the biggest issue in our history, but I also believe the quality is better than any other magazine in the state. Our pages are filled with beautiful photography, creative design layout and incredible editorial pieces that will make you truly proud to live in Jefferson City. Jefferson City is a community made up of real people who are owners of local businesses and who support the efforts of one another on a daily bases to keep our city vibrant. This is City Magazine’s fifth anniversary of the City’s Best poll, which is always an exciting and nail-biting time for local businesses. The competition heats up, and this gives everyone an opportunity for that extra thrust of marketing of their products and services. Some want to hold onto their first- or second-place spots. Others want to beat their competition and come in as first-time winners. As they say, competition is good. It keeps people motivated to work harder. It helps motivate employees to be their best or simply offers an opportunity to reevaluate what’s working or what needs to be changed. Results Are In!
Putting together the 2015 City’s Best issue has been an exciting and challenging endeavor. Exciting because this much-anticipated annual contest gets our town rallied. From the time we announced online voting for this year’s contest, the enthusiasm only seemed to escalate. Daily Facebook and Twitter posts reminded friends, family and customers to cast their votes. A surge of energy at the polls remained and continued to mount up until the very last day. Then, the final results were in! There were repeat winners, first- and second-place positions reversed from the previous years and several first-time winners. There were some surprises and some that remained from year to year. Win or lose, first or second, what became evident from beginning to end is this contest creates a lot of anticipation. And when the winners were announced, it was equally apparent that Jefferson City is a town filled with many great individuals who are just plain good sports. Of course, I’m sure there were moments of disappointment, but the generous outpouring of congratulations, high fives and backslapping given to this year’s winners was a contagious experience. Then the challenge quickly shifted to our staff. How do we, editorially, breathe new life into this event on its five-year anniversary? Luckily, we weren’t stumped for long because first or second, win or lose, the camaraderie among the individuals and businesses in our town is what keeps this contest fresh, fun and entertaining from year to year. So here you have it: a spattering of first- and second-place winners who were asked to come together with their competition and give us their best shot during a photo session at Travis Duncan Photography. You will see that the competition is all good and lighthearted. We hope you enjoy the 2015 City’s Best. All my best,

Every Move Matters How Creating The “Best” Plan Benefits More Than Just Your Employees Financial Security

Recently, my 10 year old son finished a very successful spring season of competitive baseball. The team did well; it had a winning record, two tournament championships and a World Series event. During the season, I also saw my son learn what it takes to be the best ball player he can be. Through hard work, perseverance, listening and applying what he learned, he was able to maximize his potential. And when he was at his best, his team became better. What does my son and his baseball team have to do with a retirement plan? Often I hear business owners talk about being the “best,” having the best product, service or technology. However, I find what makes a company the “best” is when the employees are allowed and encouraged to reach their potential. Numerous studies highlight that employee productivity and job satisfaction increase dramatically with an increased sense of financial security, yet very few employers take this knowledge and consider creating the “best” retirement plan for their employees. They seem to not see what I do: a plan allows, encourages and incents employees to be more financially secure and it is a big part of helping them maximize employee potential for the company. When the employees are at their best, the company will perform at its best too, just like my son and his team. There is no one “best” retirement plan; each is unique and tailored. However, all “best” plans share one common theme:
the employer strives to design a retirement plan that creates successful outcomes for employee participants. Community Connected A local builder with a family of four creates a perfect home and setting for his growing family. Scott Schaeperkoetter knows about building homes. In fact, he’s been in the homebuilding business for 13 years, and this year alone his company, Signature Homes, is in the process of building 15 single-family houses. Now living in the fourth home built by his company in the Wardsville area, he and his high school sweetheart and wife, Bobbie, welcome the opportunity to share their story of the ideal home they built for their growing family. According to Scott, his passion for the industry goes beyond building homes; he is more about creating a community where families can thrive.

With two young boys of their own, nearly 30 other kids living in the neighborhood and some of their closets friends next door, the Schaeperkoetters believe they have created a nearly flawless situation for raising their family. “We definitely plan on staying here a while,” Scott says. “Our neighborhood is a busy place because in the evening you’ll find lots of kids running around with adults outside visiting. We have a situation where we look out for each other. For the most part, there are couples our age

snack lady,” Bobbie adds. “Our kids all love having them here.” As the storybook couple, Scott, a high school quarterback, and Bobbie started dating while growing up in Owensville, Missouri. Two years Bobbie’s senior, Scott went on to play football at Missouri Valley College, but a rotator cup injury ended his football career, so he transferred to the University of Missouri. Bobbie joined him and received her teaching degree, which prepared her for homeschooling their children. “We homeschool along with two other families here,” Bobbie says. “In total, there are nine homeschooled students in the neighborhood. We try to take breaks at the same time so our kids can play and socialize together. We really have a lot of fun.” Much like what he has created for his own family, Scott enjoys building communities and is in a constant search for the next opportunity. “I’m always looking for just the right piece of land where I can develop the entire neighborhood,” he says. “I find that when there are seven or eight builders in the same area, you get a lot of different styles, and the quality may not all be the same. We know the quality of our homes is consistent. The features may be different, but there is a flow from home to home.” Scott says having the right group behind him is what makes it all possible. “Everyone on our team is out there working hard every single day to provide for their families,” he says. “We love building and are relentless about doing our best. What makes us unique is that many of our past clients are still friends. We’re able to maintain a friendship even after the professional relationship is over.” Angie Zimmerman, interior designer for Signature Homes, works closely with Bobbie, and with this home they decided to go for a clean look. “We selected white, silver, gray and purple to create a modern feel,” Bobbie says. “I also wanted some girly and sparkle mixed in, so the purple made this aspect work. Angie asks what I have in mind, grabs her notebook paper, scribbles it out, and it’s perfect. She makes my ideas functional.” The kitchen is one of Bobbie’s favorite areas in their home. “It is a well-organized place with an open, airy feel,” she says. “The white cabinets with black accents are crisp, and I like how the subway tile plays into it. We have lots of family and friends who stop by, so we created extra seating at the bar, and there’s plenty of room for storage.” Scott, who enjoys giving his crew a challenge, says: “For the kitchen, I showed my guys a picture of a brick 30 | September/October 2015

Scott and Bobbie agree the open, clean-lined kitchen is their favorite room in the house. The middle bar, painted gray for contrast, was made to offer extra seating. The room’s brick ceiling provided an extra challenge for Scott’s main finish guy, Mark Holterman. ceiling. At first they scratched their heads because they had not seen anything like it in Jefferson City. In the end they figured it out and mixed in a couple of timbers to help tie it together with the fireplace in the family room.” Yet, it was a secret space situated behind a moveable bookcase in their son’s room that proved to be a special test. “I told my main finish guy, Mark Holterman, ‘This is what I want, and you figure it out,’” Scott says. “It’s a lot of fun to be a client. My guys take great pride in their work. As a group, we have fun with what we do.” Considered the wave of the future, according to Scott, theirs is a smart house, where functions such as turning lights on and off, locking the security system and watching the property via cellphone are all possible. “It’s inexpensive at around $2,000 to add this smart technology to a home,” Scott says. “An added bonus for us is that my boys like when I remote in while traveling. They’ll tell me to log on

Lighting with metallic finishes is a popular trend and brings sophistication to a room. The softness of gold or a gold and silver combination brings warmth to a room and pairs particularly well with gray accents. Gray helps metallic colors stand out and yet softens the look to keep it from becoming too harsh. I recommend adding interest by using coordinating bronze or pewter fixtures in adjacent rooms. A great example is pairing two gold-finished drum shades over a dark gray kitchen island and then mixing in a stainless faucet. The result is fabulous! JC

A backsplash is a key element and often a major focal point of your kitchen, one of the most important rooms in your home. Today’s backsplash materials and looks are endless. So where do you begin? Here are a few pointers to keep in mind when choosing a kitchen backsplash: • Have a wow factor. The kitchen is a major gathering area, and most people who visit your home go there. Make your backsplash interesting. • Keep all elements in mind. The right backsplash can provide a cohesive look by pulling together all of your kitchen’s elements, including paint color, flooring, countertops, hardware, cabinets and appliances. Choose a pattern and colors that complement. • Use materials that will last. Backsplashes around stoves and sinks take particular abuse, so look for durable materials. • Choose quality grout, and consider upgrading your current grout. Some grouts on the market are stain, moisture and even chemical resistant. • Go for longevity looks. If you want a trendy look such as those with glass or metal, we recommend mixing in some natural stone. Stone can balance the look and is a timeless material that won’t be dated in a few years. • Don’t fight with your countertop. Some countertop materials have a lot of color and patterns. If that’s the case, you don’t want your backsplash to be too busy. • Don’t be cheap. Because the backsplash is not usually a lot of square footage, spend more money now so you are less likely to replace it later. Finding a primary care doctor can be a challenging and sometimes intimidating process. Although there are many doctors and clinics available, choosing the best fit for your needs and expectations should take careful thought and consideration. Understanding the nuances between each provider can be daunting, and it’s important to remember that your primary care physician can become your partner for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. First and foremost, you must be comfortable enough with your doctor/patient relationship to communicate effectively about your health. An initial consideration may seem basic but is important: Do you prefer a male or female physician? Remember when you see your primary caregiver, you will discuss some potentially sensitive subjects. Some people are more comfortable with a provider of the same sex. You must be able to be open and honest about your medical concerns. If you are able to establish a trust with your provider, your visit will be far more satisfying and productive. Next, consider the level of training you desire from a primary caregiver. Today there are many options for you to consider. A traditional primary physician has completed medical school and a training program in family medicine. With a shortage in family medicine physicians, however, you may find that choosing a nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant is a good and viable option. Many offices have both physicians and physician extenders
so they can accommodate all types of patients and maintain better access to address patient needs. Although it’s ideal to assume your physician will be available for your needs at any hour, practice patterns are changing, and it’s important to ask the following of your primary caregiver: What are office hours? More progressive practices understand that patients seek offices that allow them to be seen and not have to take off work. More and more people face a declining ability to leave work to see the doctor. If your job doesn’t allow you to take off for a doctor visit, having after-work office hours is essential. Does your primary care doctor go to the hospital? If not, what is the arrangement? The increasing burden of time and liability associated with hospital care has forced many doctors to choose between sick- and well-patient care. If your doctor doesn’t go to the hospital, he or she will have an arrangement for someone to care for you while you are admitted to the hospital. Doctors now have the option to utilize hospitalists, physicians who work hospital shifts to care for patients who either don’t have a family doctor or whose doctor does not come to the hospital. These hospitalists care for you while you are admitted to the hospital similar to an emergency room doctor. Once you are discharged, they send information to your doctor to ensure a smooth transition of care. More physicians face this choice as the days of being able to do both are declining. JC
Dr. James Weiss, primary care physician Dr. James Weiss was voted one of Jefferson City Magazine’s Best Doctors and has achieved this honor for several consecutive years. Weiss, a native Missourian from Perryville, attended University of Missouri undergrad and then, in 1975, obtained his doctorate in medicine. Weiss completed a three-year residency in family practice at the University of Maryland. Afterward, his Missouri roots and the prompting of his wife, Donna, led him back to Jefferson City to start a solo family practice. In 1988, he joined forces with Dr. Henry Domke to establish Family Care Associates. Family Care Associates became a division of Jefferson City Medical Group in 1996. Recently Weiss took time away from his busy practice to share a few of his professional and personal views on the practice of primary care and life.
Why did you choose to become a family medicine doctor? When I was growing up in Perryville, there were only family medicine doctors. They basically took care of any problem the patient had, and that appealed to me. When I finished medical school, I wanted to have a broad-based practice and also one that afforded me long-term relationships with my patients. Family medicine allowed that.
What made you choose Jefferson City for your practice? After completing my residency in family medicine, my wife and I wanted to move back to Missouri. She was from Kansas City, so Jefferson City was the compromise for us to be in close proximity to our families. I contacted the Missouri State Medical Association, and they put me in touch with some established doctors in the areas. Once we decided to move to Jefferson City, I started my solo practice and shared call with some of the older doctors. What’s one thing you love about coming to work every day? I like the long-term relationships I have with my patients, especially becoming a valuable part of their lives and getting to know them as more than just patients. I also enjoy the problem-solving aspect of medicine and helping them when they are seriously ill in the hospital. What advice would you give a new family medicine doctor to make his or her practice as successful as yours? I would tell them to stay current and continue to learn throughout your career. Having a stable home life will make you more productive at work. Also, integrate yourself and your family into the community. Lastly, treat patients as you would want to be treated. What would you tell your mother to ask her doctor during a visit? I would tell her to trust her doctor, and remember that he or she has her best interests in mind. Tell him or her exactly what is bothering you and any symptoms you have. Also, ask questions until you understand what the problem is and what the doctor wants to do to help you. What do you like to do when you are away from work? I love to explore Jefferson City and the surrounding area. I like to spend time with my wife and children. Obtaining a Mortgage Loan What is the process? By Peter Grefrath
Many don’t know what to expect when attempting to obtain a home mortgage. Listed below are a few basics from start to finish: • Preapproval: As a first step in the process, you will fill out an application to determine your overall creditworthiness. This also gives us an opportunity to research which loan program may work best for you. You will be asked to gather necessary financial information (i.e. past two years of tax returns and W2s, past one month of paystubs, past two months of liquid-asset statements and a copy of your driver’s license). • Locking rate: Once under contract, you are eligible to lock your interest rate. This assures your interest rate will not increase. Because we stay watchful of the market, we can advise on whether you should take a locking stance or float the market. • Appraisal/underwriting: We require an appraisal to substantiate the contract price. Also, at this point the file will move into our underwriting department, where they assure all details of the loan fit within the proper guidelines. • Closing: Your closing day is when closing documents are signed, and all funds in the transaction come together to allow you to purchase your home. This is when the property transfer occurs, and the home becomes yours.

Building a New Home
Keep these pointers in mind when planning and designing. By Scott Schaeperkoetter Fall is upon us, and this is an ideal time for planning and beginning construction on new homes. Homes begun during this time of year can often be finished and livable by the following summer. Whether building for a young family or for someone in their golden years, scheduling is a vital part of every construction project. Moving into a new home in a timely manner is desirable, and it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement and romance of actually living there. However, laying proper groundwork is critical, and moving too quickly can create expensive problems and even some disappointments. The following are a few suggestions to keep in mind when building a home: Design phase: Allow as much time as you need to study the plans and make revisions. This phase can take two to three months or longer. It’s a lengthy process but worth the time and effort. Construction: The length of time to build a home can vary depending on the size and style of the home. Allow enough time for the builder to build the home you want without jeopardizing quality. A good standard build time is between five and eight months. Move in: Give yourself plenty of time for the moving process. Recruit friends and family to help with the move, or simply hire a company to move you.

Change Is Good One of the highlights of being mayor was sharing the stage with Gov. Jay Nixon, Sen. Mike Kehoe and others at the Capitol Cornerstone 100th Anniversary Ceremony on July 3. I had the honor of leading the Pledge of Allegiance, the same honor granted to me in 1984 as a Girl Scout during the July 4 celebration. Talk about coming full circle! As I watched today’s scouts on stage, I wondered about what their amazing futures will hold. During Bob Priddy’s engaging talk at the anniversary celebration, he noted that women were not permitted to vote on whether to build and keep the new Capitol in Jefferson City. In fact, it would be four election cycles before women would gain the right to vote.
What a shift, I thought, as I sat on stage as Jefferson City’s second woman mayor. What else will change over the next 100 years? Which stories will wow us as we continue to progress? My personal hope is that Jefferson City will celebrate 100 years with a renovated Missouri State Penitentiary, enjoying the best view of our Capitol and river. Indeed, it was an awesome experience to be a part of the Capitol Cornerstone 100th Anniversary Ceremony and to witness past capsule contents revealed and then contribute to contents for the future centennial capsule. My note, addressed to the mayor 100 years into the future, was a remarkable experience on many levels.

Where Does Sales Tax Go?
We’ve all heard it, but why is it so important that we make it a habit? Take pride in your decision to spend your hard-earned dollars locally. Those dollars are bigger than merely your purchase. Every penny has an impact on our community. In certain cases, there are things that cannot be purchased in Jefferson City, but when there is a chance to buy locally rather than online, I encourage you to make that choice. In the graph to the right you can see the impact of local dollars. As a small-business owner, I appreciate your support. Every customer who makes a choice to come through my door makes a specific impact. When you shop locally, your dollars help pay salaries. My store is a first job for many, and I love having that opportunity. It’s probably not hard for you to remember the person who first took a chance on you and what you learned from it. Your well-spent local dollars pay for rent (which goes back into the building), local utilities, banks, accountants, insurance, college, houses and cars, to name just a few. When I ran for mayor, I bought local for my campaign materials because I wanted to be a good example. Many of the products and services were available online, sometimes for less, but in the big picture it’s a worthy investment to support local businesses. Having strong shopping areas draws customers and generates all of the benefits above. Shopping local = sales tax = roads, sidewalks and an even better community. Make that change, make it a habit and shop local whenever you can. The success of your city depends on it! JC

Heart Champions Capital Region Medical Center received the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR ACTION Registry-GWTG Platinum Performance Achievement Award for 2015. As a third-year recipient, CRMC is one of only 319 hospitals selected nationwide. This award recognizes a higher standard of care for heart attack patients and signifies that CRMC has reached an aggressive goal of treating these patients to standard levels of care as outlined by the American College of Cardiology/ American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations.

Perfectly Suited Three generations deep, Saffees continues to build fashion confidence among its cliental.

Saffees clothing store has been an iconic storefront in downtown Jefferson City for more than 90 years. Although many know the store, either from finding the perfect outfit or admiring the window décor, its rich and complex family history may be its best-kept secret. In 1923, Samuel Saffee, a young entrepreneur who was educated in France and fluent in three languages, started a furniture store with his wife, Sadie, in Jefferson City but quickly realized a greater need for a women’s clothing store in the community. Saffees clothing store opened two years later downtown. From the very beginning, it was a full-blown family affair. Samuel’s daughter, Lorraine, worked at the store through college and then took over after a devastating fire destroyed the store in 1961.

It was a business she rebuilt from the ground up and passed along to her own children, including her daughter, Judy. Today, Lorraine Saffee Mercurio, Judy Howard and Michelle Hattaway (granddaughter) all work in the Jefferson City store, side by side, six days a week. buying and spends time marketing the business through several outlets, including social media. “We can dress you regardless of age, body type or budget,” Hattaway says. “We can help to build your self-confidence.” Dressing women for those big occasions — first date, first job, honeymoon, having kids, kids’ homecoming — has made Saffees’ customers more than just customers; they are friends. Building these relationships and dressing their clients well is something neither Howard nor Hattaway takes lightly. “It doesn’t feel like work when you’re catching up on people’s lives — people getting married or having kids,” Hattaway says. “We get to watch them go through these milestones and be a part of it. They grow, and we grow.” In order for Saffees to continue expanding and evolving as a business with each generation, the family works hard to bring fashionable, one-of-a-kind clothing to its customers. generations go to market in Las Vegas and New York several times a year to keep abreast of and purchase the latest styles. H Heading off to college can be an exciting, yet overwhelming time for both students and parents. Did we get all of the financial paperwork done? Do we have essentials and adornments ready for the dorm room? Did we put money in your account? Unless, of course, there is no “we,” and a student has to navigate those collegiate waters completely alone with no help, no support and no safety net. Then it becomes downright scary. And as Royce Schreiber and Suzanne Luther learned, it hits a lot closer to home than we think.
Last December, just weeks before Christmas, Schreiber posted to her Facebook page an alarming NPR article entitled “There’s No Place Like a Dorm Room for the Holidays.” It was about college students, many former foster care youths, who have no housing options other than staying in the dorms over holiday breaks, even though cafeterias and most everything on campus is shut down. The story touched a chord with Schreiber and Luther, both with daughters at the University of Missouri in Columbia, and

they sprang into action to try to help these students. “Royce immediately called residence halls at Mizzou to find out if there were kids staying there over the holiday break,” Luther says. “At first no one could give us any information, but then three days before Christmas, they called to give us a number. There were 51 kids staying in the dorms with nowhere else to go.” Never underestimate the power of two mothers on a mission. Suzanne Luther rallied troops in Jefferson City to donate enough items to fill 51 Christmas gift bags. It was a simple request calling on parents to help kids with no parents. The donations flooded in. “My whole porch was loaded with groceries, stocking stuffers, baked goods, gift cards and money to buy more gifts cards at restaurants close to campus,” Luther says. “We had to use a truck for the both of us to deliver it all.” For the students in need, it became a welcome and unexpected outpouring of support indeed. The holiday gift bag deliveries might have been the end of the story, except Royce Schreiber

They’ve had to have their act together to even get here, but when they don’t have the resources they need, they struggle.” — Dr. Clark Peters, assistant professor, University of Missouri School of Social Work Schreiber asked one more question: “It was such an easy thing to do, but what else can we do to help?” Schreiber and Luther then connected with Dr. Clark Peters, assistant professor at the MU School of Social Work, to help guide them on the next steps. Peters, who focuses much of his research on young people caught up in the system, provided some much-needed insight into the students he comes in contact with every day in his work. “These kids are fiercely independent and mature because they’ve had to be,” Peters says. “They’ve had to have their act together to even get here, but when they don’t have the resources they need, they struggle.” Both Schreiber and Luther continue to work on pulling extra resources together, including exploring local resources, organizations and people who can assist. Although they don’t have all the answers or know exactly how the pieces will fit, they do know these students have a huge need for personal mentoring, advice with basic life skills and financial support for life’s little emergencies, such as a broken-down car or an unexpected medical bill. “We should do better at helping these kids,” Peters says. “Royce and Suzanne understand that and are trying to plug in and help wherever Jefferson City Magazine | 119

Posts include information on news and research, as well as support and local resources needed on an ongoing basis. The page is also a place to share how these dedicated students can be best supported and how others can step in to help remove obstacles that may prevent them from finishing their education: a place, thankfully, where those interested in supporting these courageous young students can help become part of the solution to their success. Superintendent of Schools at Jefferson City Public Schools Do you have a nickname? If so, how and when did you get it? Not really. I have friends who call me Big L, but I’m not sure how long ago I got it. I think it started when I started getting bigger. I need to fix that and lose 20 pounds. Length of time in your position: I started on July 21, 2015. Former jobs and number of years/ months in those positions: This is my eighth year as a school superintendent. Before moving to Jefferson City, I was superintendent at two other Missouri districts, including Maryville R-2 for four years and South Harrison R-2 in Bethany for three years. Prior to that, I was the career center director at South Harrison for four years after serving as counselor and business teacher there. I also taught business at Jefferson City High School during the 1995-1996 school year. Tell us about your family: I am blessed. I have been married 17 years and married over my head with my wife, Angie. We have four children: Micah, a freshman at Simonsen; Sarah, a seventh-grader at Thomas Jefferson; Hannah, a fifth-grader at Pioneer Trails; and William, a third-grader also at Pioneer Trails.

Education: I am currently finishing up my doctorate through the University of Missouri in educational leadership and policy analysis. I have an educational specialist degree from Northwest Missouri State University, a master’s degree from Northwest Missouri State University and an undergraduate degree from MU. Favorite charitable organization and why: Food banks providing meals to kids because we need to assure every child has proper nutrition.

Immediate goals are to build relationships and develop agreed-upon expectations with a clear vision and clear communication. I hope to get everyone rowing in the same direction. My long-term vision is to lead JCPS in becoming a model school district. For this to happen, we need to ensure kids are learning, we are partnering with all stakeholders and we are practicing good stewardship. Why are you passionate about your line of work? Education can provide hope to folks who might not otherwise have hope. We can be difference-makers in the lives of our youth, who are the future of our great nation. Biggest career obstacle you’ve had to overcome: Getting into education. I was a business major at MU and worked for Procter and Gamble and called on grocery stores right out of college. I hated my job and went back to school to get certified to teach. Greatest personal challenge where you have experienced success: Keeping my priorities in line. I have a tendency to get consumed with my job and need to keep my family life where it should be. Favorite place to spend a Saturday afternoon: Anywhere with my family.

Harold Brown Jr., known as Brownie to many, is well known for two major reasons. He is a former owner of Jefferson City’s original Zesto Drive-In, a favorite ice-cream and fast-food spot, and he is also the only baby featured in Thomas Hart Benton’s renowned mural on the wall of the House of Representatives lounge located in the Missouri State Capitol. Although Brownie sold his ownership of Zesto several years ago, his image as a bare-bottomed baby having a diaper change, which was quite controversial for the time, stands immortal in Benton’s painting. Brownie tells the remarkable story of his family’s friendship with Benton and their involvement as models featured in this famous piece of art, depicting everyday scenes in the lives of early Missourians.
I
In 1935 Thomas Hart Benton was commissioned to paint a mural on a wall of the Missouri House of Representatives lounge located on the west side of the third floor of the Missouri State Capitol. As a Missourian, Benton depicted his experiences growing up in the area and used those he knew or had come into contact with as subjects for his art. In 1933, Harold William Brown, my father, was appointed adjutant general of Missouri by Gov. Park after a 30-year career in military service, most with the Missouri National Guard. After World War I, my father found it necessary to study to be a dentist after most officers were furloughed.

At some point during his visit to our home, Benton noticed Harold Brown Jr. — me — crawling on a blanket. As he continued to sketch my father, Benton said: “General, I must put a baby in my mural. Without babies, the Western movement would have failed.”
Considered a scandalous scene at the time, Harold Brown Jr. is the featured infant in the Thomas Hart Benton mural.
After his appointment, duties put him in the State Capitol during the same time Benton was working on his mural. My father often passed by the doorway of the House lounge and would occasionally look inside and comment to Benton on his progress of the mural. One day Benton mentioned to my father, “General, you have an interesting face, so I would like to put you in my mural.” My father accepted the offer, and a sitting was scheduled. At the time, my mother and father lived in an apartment in the 660th block of Capitol Avenue, across from the Missouri State Penitentiary. According to my mother, Benton was a very social kind of a guy and loved to chat and indulge in a drink or two of liquor. At some point during his visit to our home, Benton noticed Harold Brown Jefferson City Magazine | 127

Without babies, the Western movement would have failed.” Once the sketch of my father was complete, it was time for me. It is notable that Benton sketched my father on a 10-by12 artist sketchpad. In my opinion, because he wanted an image of me in a prime position and also wanted to include a facial image, a larger pad was necessary for my sketch. Noted also, one facial was started of me and then left unfinished for some unknown reason. The second facial resulted in a detailed pencil sketch of my head and face, much the same as my father’s sketch. Benton signed both sketches. He signed my father’s sketch as “Benton,” which was normal, as with all of his signed work. My sketch is signed, “With apologies to the Browns — Thomas H. Benton.” When my mother asked Benton why he signed such a work of art the way he did, he

replied, “That baby has a beautiful body, but that is my style, and that is the way I would like it to appear in the mural.” It should be noted that both sketches have brushstrokes of paint on them. These sketches were used as the pattern for the finished image. In my father’s sketch, Benton used colors from his suit. In my case he used blue, the color of my eyes, and flesh tones, which match my skin color. Both sketches were rolled up like a newspaper and tucked away in my father’s footlocker for years. As a youngster, I would go through the locker as my mother related to me the importance of the items. It was not until I was in my 30s that I did discover, by accident, the true importance of the sketches. As far as I know, I may be the only living model from this illustrious mural and may be the only model who has signed sketches from Benton, which proves that my father and I are the real people in Benton’s masterpiece.

Peach Tree Farm draws many school field trips from Jefferson City, Columbia and other districts within a 50-mile radius. “Schoolchildren come and see up close how pumpkins grow and what various farm animals look like,” Judy says. “They learn a lot just seeing everything up close.” Peach Tree Farm began roughly 20 years ago when Bruce Arnett decided to try his hand at truck farming, the practice of farming small fruits and vegetables and using a truck to haul and sell crops at market. “He grew a lot of pumpkins,” Judy says. “He ended up with more than he could sell, so we placed them around our old cabin and put an ad in the paper to let people know that we had pumpkins for sale.” And with that, a tradition was born.
According to Judy, customers who came by to purchase pumpkins spoke of what they enjoyed about patches they’d visited as children, of wanting to go on a hayride and other fall activities that complemented those ideas. The Arnetts gave considerable thought to the many suggestions and moved on an opportunity to share and promote the outdoors and farm life to others. “People came to buy our pumpkins, and we listened to their comments,” Judy says. “Over the years, our little pumpkin patch has turned into a fall getaway for families and schoolchildren.”
In addition to providing fun for other families, the Arnetts’ six children have grown up working on the farm. During the summers, the family helps in the orchard with pruning, thinning, picking, sorting and selling peaches. For the pumpkins, they help plant the patches, care for the animals and assist with the customers. Jefferson City Magazine | 143

Place pizza stone or a double layer of quarry tiles on a cold grill or in a cold oven. Heat to 500 degrees F. Meanwhile, heat olive oil in a medium pan or skillet over medium heat. Add onion and garlic, and sauté until soft. Add mushrooms, and cook briefly until tender, stirring frequently. Add prosciutto, salt and pepper, and cook for just 1 or 2 minutes, stirring frequently.

Their days began at 9 a.m., ended at 11 p.m. and included three hours of personal dance practice, Taekwondo classes for cross-training and a full day of teaching in the studio. Most of you have seen the TV show Survivor. It’s been on since the Clinton administration, after all. Some of you may still watch it. If you never have, it pits people against one another in nature while trying — as the title suggests — to survive in less-than-ideal conditions, in places such as Guatemala, Samoa and secluded spots in Africa. If you’re in real danger, of course, one of the CBS crewmembers filming your every move will make sure you’re OK, so this is not really a matter of life of death. But in the end, the last man or woman standing wins $1 million. Missouri has its own version of Survivor, and you can learn how to win in nature through a class at the Missouri Department of Conservation. The class: Emergency Outdoor Preparedness. The teacher: Brian Flowers. “This class deals with the basics of how to find shelter, build a fire, find water, identify edible plants, those type of things,” says Flowers, an outdoor skills specialist with the MDC. “It’s been equated to Survivor, but most people don’t spend the night out there.” Not on purpose, anyway. “It happens sometimes,” Flowers says with a smile. “Of course, there are a lot of people who enjoy spending a few days and nights out there.” Emergency Outdoor Preparedness is one of many classes taught by Flowers and offered by the MDC. “My job is to teach conservation through the hands-on teaching of outdoor skills,” he says. “We teach the
shooting sports, rifle, pistol, shotgun; we teach archery; we also teach all the fishing activities, from basic fishing classes to the more advanced fishing techniques; we teach camping, backpacking and canoeing. We teach folks how to be safe and responsible and how to appreciate conservation and enjoy the outdoors when participating in outdoor skills.” There are myriad classes taught at MDC venues around the state, including the Runge Nature Center in Jefferson City, and you can find a list of these classes and other programs at mdc.mo.gov. But perhaps the most important classes deal with hunting and guns, classes that can literally be matters of life and death. “These courses are designed to teach folks how to be safe and responsible with firearms and give them those skills that they need

Our program (mandatory classes for hunters started in 1988) has been very successful in reducing the number of hunting incidents. These incidents have dropped considerably.” When Flowers says “incidents,” he really means accidents, right? No, not even close. “We use the term incident because we feel like they were all preventable,” he says. “An accident maybe implies that it was not preventable, but if folks will follow the basic safety rules, then they are preventable.” Although these are usually male-dominated endeavors, more women are getting involved all the time, and there are classes designed specifically for them. “A lot of times they just enjoy learning around other women,” Flowers says. “We see different kinds of folks from various backgrounds covering a range of ages in our programs,” he continues. “There was a time

But now we’re seeing more parents and grandparents getting involved and wanting to bring their kids to classes, to brush up on their own skills and teach their children.” Flowers grew up in south-central Missouri in a small town called Houston, which is the county seat of Texas County. The population is 2,000. “It was only about 1,200 when I lived there,” he says. “They didn’t have a stoplight back then, but now the town has a couple of them.” After graduating from high school, where he lettered in football and golf, he earned his degree in natural resources and recreation management from the University of Missouri in 1994. But his love for nature blossomed, if you will, long before that. “I can remember picking up books at the library about Missouri fish and wildlife when I was in the first grade,” says Flowers, who’s been with the MDC for 14 years. “And being in the Ozarks, we had a
lot of opportunities to hunt (his favorite hunt now is for wild turkeys) and fish (his favorite quests are trout and smallmouth bass) and enjoy the outdoors.” Now, Flowers is one of those lucky few in life whose work is also his love. And according to many people, there’s no better place to love and enjoy nature than in Missouri. Although there’s no $1 million jackpot waiting at the end of an adventure, you’re a winner just for experiencing it. “Missouri has so much to offer in the way of fishing and hunting and other outdoor activities, and Missourians care deeply about those type of things,” Flowers says. “They care deeply about their connection with the land. “Naturalist Aldo Leopold, who was from Wisconsin and known as the father of modern wildlife management during the ’20s and ’30s, said if conservation would work anywhere in this world, it would work in Missouri because Missourians have such a great connection to the land,” Flowers continues. “And, that’s still true today.” JC Jefferson City Magazine | 157

Modern Timeless Historic City of Jefferson’s 2015 Homes Tour showcases the work of Hurst John. by Tam m y B o e s chen | photos by Keith B orgmeyer
This year’s homes tour focuses on the work of one architect, Hurst John. John was a prolific mid-Missouri architect who designed more than 900 properties during his 30-year career. He built more than 60 homes in Jefferson City spanning from the 1950s to the 1970s. Although John passed away suddenly in 1979 during the process of designing a home at 822 Boonville Road, his tasteful designs continue to withstand the test of time. John had the nickname of the Frank Lloyd Wright of Columbia, so tagged from his desire to blend his residences with the landscape and for his emphasis on bringing the outside in with the use of many windows. His daughter,
Martha John, is an architect who resides in Columbia. Martha John worked for her father as a draftsperson and secretary while completing her master’s degree in music and then went on to obtain her Bachelor of Arts in architecture at Kansas State University after her father’s death. “Dad would always spend a lot of time on a home site, drawing up a grid survey of the land contours and marking the location of all the trees and other features to provide a clear idea of how to best fit the house into the property,” she says. Hurst John was known for visiting proposed construction locations during
various times of day, including dusk and dawn, to best determine the future home’s most advantageous use of natural lighting. Hallmark features of his interior designs include rooms set at angles, abundant use of doors and windows and living spaces organized by the flow of the day. The view from every window was carefully considered to achieve the most ideal vista from every vantage point. The exteriors of his homes typically include painted brick exteriors, lowpitch rooflines, large monumental chimneys, exposed roof rafters and circular driveways. 3420 Country Club Drive, home of Dr. E.D. Suggett, was built in 1970. The entry boasts a lovely sweeping stairway to the terrace level. Many original features still adorn the home, including chandeliers from Austria and Germany. The living room’s marble fireplace was once inside the now demolished U.S. Post Office and Supreme Court building in Jefferson City. Walnut paneling in the dining room came from the Steven’s Hotel in Chicago. Key exterior features, typical of John Hurst, include custom-made bricks, cypress exterior trim and exposed roof rafters. This home rests on a parklike, soothing four acres.

3434 Hobbs Lane
Behind 3420 Country Club sits 3434 Hobbs Lane, the home built for Suggett’s sister, Tess Suggett Jones, and her husband, Corliss. This home was built around 1968. Jones was the state superintendent of health education. The exterior of this home originally featured shake shingles and queen brick walls. The home has a signature low-pitched roofline, distinctive courtyard wall and copper entry roof. Inside are many repurposed treasures that make the interior particularly unique. When remodeling the home, the current owners employed an architect who formerly worked with Hurst John. Both of the Suggett homes were built with a mother-in-law’s suite on the lower floor.

2611 E. Schellridge
2611 E. Schellridge was originally the home of Carmine Vignola and his wife, Grace Kolb. Vignola was president of Carmine A. Vignola Associates in Jefferson City and was devoted to many Roman Catholic causes. Built in 1960, the home was originally a two-story structure designed in the Monterey or Creole French style, with the one-story additions coming later. The wroughtiron railing on the front balcony was fabricated in New Orleans and shipped to Jefferson City by barge. It is said that the lower level of the home was finished to accommodate visiting priests, complete with stained glass, solid mahogany paneling and wool carpet. Many of the original light fixtures that remain were imported from Italy. A tranquil Japanese garden in the back was reputedly designed by

3329 Country Club Drive
3329 Country Club Drive, built in 1960 and touted as one of the lovelier homes in Jefferson City, is an outstanding example of “authentic French Provencal architecture,” according to a local newspaper article. Even the furnishings at that time reflected the overall design of the home. Key features of the home’s exterior include brick construction, unfinished timbers and a shakeshingle roof. Unfortunately, the original owner, Juliet Price Idol (great-granddaughter of Thomas Lawson Price, Jefferson City’s first mayor), died during a fire in the home many years later. Although the home was badly damaged during the fire, the next owners remained sensitive to keeping with the integrity of its original design throughout the restoration process. The current floor plan, nearly untouched from the original, features several areas that provide optimal entertaining options.

2323 W. Main St. was built in 1960. One of the early residents of the home was Kansas City lawyer Henry I. Eager. Judge Eager was appointed as a Supreme Court judge in Jackson County (Kansas City) and served from 1955 to 1968. The majority of this twostory home’s interior is remarkably intact, including a prominent central hearth, original hardwoods and ceiling beams in the library. The second floor features a number of nooks that not only create a picturesque floor plan but also allow for lots of light. Leading up to this two-story home with dormers that break the roofline is Hurst John’s signature circle drive. JC
Hurst John would often visit the proposed construction location at dawn and dusk to determine the future home’s most advantageous use of natural lighting.
Hurst John was born in Broadway, Missouri, on Aug. 31, 1911, the youngest of the six children of Edward Lee and Ollie (Travis) John. He began his education in the Star Rural School, a log cabin near his home in Maries County. While he was still in elementary school, he moved with his family to Columbia. Although he began high school in Columbia, he graduated in 1929 from St. James High School in Phelps County. He later attended the University of Missouri from 1930 to 1932. In 1932, he took a job as a maintenance man at Stephens College, where he was in daily contact with landscape and construction work. His work at Stephens helped clarify his early ambitions to become a landscape architect. Later, from 1937 to 1940, John worked as a draftsman and apprentice for MU architecture professor Harry Satterlee Bill. From 1941 to 1943 he worked as resident architect on the expansion program at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He joined the United States Army in 1943, and for the next three years served at Camp Adair, Oregon, and at Fort Leonard Wood. On April 30, 1946, after receiving an honorable discharge, he returned to Columbia, where he opened the architectural firm of Hurst John and Associates. In 1947, John registered as an architect in the state of Missouri. After World War II Hurst John and Associates met post-war construction demands for new houses, subdivisions, commercial and public buildings. John designed and remodeled structures in Columbia and Boone County and in other small towns and cities throughout the state. Some of his principal projects were the Stephens College Health Center; library and dormitories for William Woods College in Fulton; an apartment house and medical office building in Jefferson City; plans for the Boone Electric Cooperative; Central Plaza Development for St. James; and remodeling of the Fredendall and Wilkins Department Store in Mexico, Missouri. His firm served as project architects for the Southwest Bell Telephone building in Fayette and Station KIRX in Kirksville. By 1962 his firm designed the Gallagher and Kent Building in Mexico, Southern Hills Subdivision in Boonville, the Chariton Valley Telephone office building, Meader Funeral Home in Centralia, the Farmers Stock Bank in Blackwater and a number of private residences. Later in the 1960s and 1970s, his firm designed the Samaritan Hospital addition in Macon; the Missouri Store Co. (Missouri Book Store) addition in Columbia; the Hawkeye Book Store in Boulder, Colorado; a new building for the United Bank of Macon; and the Central Electric Power Cooperative offices in Jefferson City. John was active in social and civic affairs. He was a member of the Columbia School Board and the Great Rivers Council of the Boy Scouts of America. In 1949 he became an honorary member of Cosmopolitan International. He organized and became the first president of the United Cerebral Palsy of Missouri organization in central Missouri. He was president of the Missouri Council of the American Society of Registered Architects, a member of the Missouri Association of Registered Architects, regional vice president of the Society of Registered Architects and president of the Architects and Engineers of Columbia Inc. John’s other interests included serving as president of Boonville Southern Hills Inc. and as trustee and chairman of the Committee on Buildings and Grounds for Kemper Military Academy in Boonville. In addition, he was a member of the Public Library Architectural Committee of the American Library Association. John’s architectural career spanned nearly three decades, from the late 1940s until his untimely death after a brief illness on Feb. 3, 1979. Persistence and Talent Win Hard work and a courageous attitude bring decades of success. by L au r e n Sable Freiman | photo by keith b orgmeyer Kas Jacquot, owner of Kas A Designs, shares her secrets to success as she celebrates 40 years in the jewelry business. With an unlikely and unusual beginning, her only collateral consisted of three hogs and $50 of hand tools as she built her business from the ground up and pursued the training to create one-of-a-kind jewelry. “Not bad for a married teenage mother and high school dropout,” she says. Learning to be fearless: I moved to the Southern Missouri Ozarks in 1974 during the back-to-the-land movement when a lot of people were moving down there. I started out living in a tent for three months while building a cabin. Eventually, I added property and was living on a selfsustaining farm in the middle of the Mark Twain National Forest, where I raised hogs. I had a herd of 28 milk goats, made cheese, had chickens, grew 125 tomato plants and harvested a big herb garden. To further supplement the farm income, I made stained glass and wove baskets. These experiences helped me realize I could survive without very much, which helped me become more fearless.
Hard work and independence pay off: I started traveling to the world’s largest gem show in Arizona, and for two years I worked with a vendor as a gemologist to learn how to color grade and recognize the varieties of gemstones. Then I made contacts all over the world with people who own mines, and I started importing gemstones. The demand for my jewelry increased, and at Christmastime I was working 20 hours a day. The business grew and doubled every year. I won my first international design competition in 2004 and also won six or seven statewide design competitions. I joined the American Gem Society, a prestigious association for jewelers, and was a member for five years. Growing up I spent a lot of time with my grandmothers, and we were always making things. We drew, embroidered, crocheted and baked. These were women who encouraged me to do what I wanted to do. When I declined a full-ride college accounting scholarship to go to the Ozarks, my mother said, “I wanted you to be independent, but I went too far.”
A man from Arizona changes everything: A man moved into the area, a silversmith from Arizona, who wanted to get into the hog business. He offered to trade turquoise, hand tools and lessons in jewelry making in exchange for three sows. He let me watch him work for a week, we traded the sows for the stones and jewelry equipment, and I was on my own. I sat in the middle of the floor making a ring, and I melted three in a row. This trade was a much better one for him than me. Finding inspiration in unlikely places: I began to make more rings. After I completed about 15 rings, I went to my first art show in Mountain View, Arkansas, to sell jewelry. I didn’t do very well and only sold a couple of rings. However, a woman from the next booth, who became a friend, had a sign that said, “Failure cannot cope with persistence.” I chose that for my mantra throughout my entire career. People from the shows continued to give me sales tips, and it helped me become more successful at shows all over the country. I took gemology correspondence courses from the Gemological Institute of America and bought, restored and sold antique jewelry. Soon thereafter, I started making more expensive gold jewelry with colored gemstones and, as a result, priced myself out of the art show market. In a moment, life changes: About that time my mother was killed in a car accident, and my grandmother didn’t have anyone to take care of her. I came back to Jefferson City, my hometown, in 1980. In 1985, I opened my first store at 312 W. Dunklin. People told me I’d never make it there, but I did. 188 | September/October 2015

When you’ve been in business 40 years, you become a part of so many people’s lives, thousands of people. Ready to enjoy what she’s sown: I’m 63, I’ve been in business 40 years, and I am not the workaholic I once was. I’m ready to enjoy the fruits of my labor and would like to slow down a bit, maybe sell more of my designs nationally to a large corporation that owns a lot of jewelry stores. I would like to downsize, have a smaller showroom, and I’d like to do more design by appointment rather than having a store open all of the time with me running it. I think I’ll always make jewelry. I love the art, the creation. Although I don’t want to be a hog farmer again, I’ve been thinking about raising goats along with bees and chickens. I still raise a very large organic vegetable garden. I do love the farm life. JC
