he San Francisco Department of Public Works is a world-class organization dedicated to ensuring the safety, sustainability and all-around beauty of one of America’s greatest cities. Guided by its strategic plan, a three-year road map to direct the agency’s vision, the department is focused on ensuring outstanding public service and rapid responsiveness in times of need. “We design, build, operate, maintain, clean, green, and improve the City’s infrastructure, public rights-of-way, and facilities with 4
skill, pride, and responsiveness, in partnership with the San Francisco community,” says Director Mohammed Nuru. “We basically maintain and improve our city’s assets.” Thanks to the support of the community, local businesses and a dedicated staff, the department is making successful headway on the many goals set out in its strategic plan. “We meet very regularly to see how well we’re all doing, which directly ties into the performance plan of each employee,” says Nuru. “And we’re seeing

excellent results—people are taking ownership for their neighborhoods and supporting the efforts of many of the groups we’ve helped establish.” Responsiveness Under four major divisions— administration, operations, infrastructure and buildings—the department is fully equipped to perform everything from architectural design and project management to street reconstruction and sidewalk repair, in-house. Giant Sweep Kick off Event

Vital Construction On behalf of several City departments, DPW is also responsible for delivering major capital projects throughout San Francisco—from planning and design to construction. Each project involves extensive studies, reports, reviews, design concepts, construction documents, scheduling and community collaboration. For example, DPW is in the 12
process of a $500 million expansion of the Moscone Convention Center to attract more business leaders to world renowned events. Other projects include $100 million in upgrades at the city’s historic War Memorial Veteran’s Building, a combined police and fire department Public Safety Building, a new San Francisco General Hospital facility and the construction of a cruise ship terminal, home to America’s Cup race this year.
