According to the N.C. Department of Transportation’s Division of Aviation:
• Each year, more than 50 million passengers fly into and out of the state’s 72 public and 300-plus private airports, heliports and landing areas.
• Commercial and general aviation airports generate about $31 billion annually, while providing more than 123,000 jobs.
• More than 20,000 drones in North Carolina are registered with the Federal Aviation Administration – including hundreds used by businesses and local and state government agencies.

Leading aerospace and aviation companies are building upon North Carolina’s first in flight history with major operations in the Carolina Core, a 120 mile corridor stretching from west of Winston-Salem through the Triad and down to Fayetteville. Aerospace employment continues to take off in the Carolina Core, increasing 40% between 2014 and 2019 to more than 15,600 working at aerospace-related companies.
Among the 200-plus aerospace and aviation companies in the Carolina Core is Honda Aircraft Company, which established its Greensboro headquarters in 2006 and operates R&D, manufacturing and customer service facilities that together employ 1,500 associates throughout the region. Other major operations include HAECO Americas, with 600,000 square feet of facilities including a new hangar that is one of the largest in the HAECO family, and Textron Aviation, operating one of only 15 service centers for Cessna business jets worldwide.

Aerospace and aviation companies tap into the Carolina Core’s skilled talent pool to design, engineer and move their next big innovation. “Talent in the Carolina Core has a strong work ethic,” says Michimasa Fujino, former president and CEO of Honda Aircraft Company. The area’s talent pool is rapidly growing and projected to add 1 million people over the next 25 years to its current population of 8 million. Most recently, Boom Supersonic selected Piedmont Triad International Airport as the location for its manufacturing facility for its new supersonic passenger aircraft, planned to begin production in 2025.
Companies have access to more than 30 colleges and universities that enroll 250,000 students, with aviation-related training concentrated at area community colleges. Guilford Technical Community College’s Aviation Campus is one of the most modern and best-equipped aviation maintenance training facilities in the Southeast. At Forsyth Technical Community College, a new $16 million aviation center will accommodate eight airframes and help meet the growing demand for aviation technicians and mechanics, with the first class of 25 students beginning in Fall 2020.
SITES READY FOR TAKEOFF
The Carolina Core has several industrial sites ready for aerospace and aviation operations. At the Piedmont Triad International Airport, the PTI Aerospace Megasite’s 1,000 acres include runway access and preliminary approval for development by the EPA. Other commercial and regional airports along the Carolina Core offer development sites with airfield access and plenty of industrial and business parks for off-airport operations.

For more than 50 years, the aviation program at Guilford Technical Community College has soared. And now more than ever, GTCC is poised to offer a new pipeline of skilled labor in the field, as Boom Supersonic makes plans to build its Overture Superfactory in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Supporting this welcome addition to local industry, GTCC will construct an expansive 100,000-square-foot aviation center on its Cameron Campus, complementing the existing T.H. Davis Aviation Center, located adjacent to the runways at Piedmont Triad International Airport. GTCC is well on its way to securing $37.4 million for its new aviation center, and college leaders may take bids for the initial construction as soon as May or June 2023, with the hope of completing construction by 2027.
In addition to cutting-edge facilities, GTCC offers a plethora of programs in aerospace manufacturing, aviation systems, aviation electronics (avionics), and aviation management, not to mention the Aviation Manufacturing Quick Careers Program (AMQCP), a fast-track for students seeking jobs in the field. Aviation students can even earn a bachelor’s or master’s degree on-site at GTCC, thanks to an articulation agreement between the college and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
GTCC’s aviation program is deeply rooted in the local business community, including collaborative partnerships with entities such as HondaJet and HAECO. Business partners provide crucial work-based learning for students seeking apprenticeships, internships, and mentorships. Through 2032, Boom expects to create 200 additional internships for students. This type of on-site education allows students to immerse themselves in the field of aviation, learning by doing, all with the support of experts. Day and evening classes are available to GTCC’s aviation students, allowing them the flexibility to take advantage of experiential learning.

PTI MEGASITE READY FOR TENANTS
The Piedmont Triad International Airport located between Greensboro, High Point and Winston-Salem is aggressively making room for more tenants to join the growing group of international companies already thriving at the airport.
In recent years, the airport has acquired and is grading hundreds of acres, all with direct access to the airfield and served by numerous interstate highways. The land has received preliminary environmental approval is ready for development either in parcels or as one large site.
“We understand that when aerospace companies decide to develop a new location, they want the site ready yesterday,” says the airport’s executive director, Kevin Baker. “Airports must move at the speed of business to be competitive. And the speed of business is getting faster all the time.”
Boom Supersonic, which will manufacture its groundbreaking supersonic passenger aircraft at the airport, is the most recent company to discover the advantages of locating at PTI. Site preparation for Boom’s new manufacturing hangar is slated to begin in early 2023. Boom joins companies such as FedEx Honda Aircraft Company, HAECO Americas and Cessna, which have located or expanded operations at the airport over the past decade. The combined workforce of these and other companies at PTI is over 8,600 employees.
“Our airport has twin missions,” says Baker. “One is to provide a safe and efficient operation and outstanding experience for our passengers. The second is to drive local economic development and job growth. We take both of these missions very seriously.”
The aerospace “megasite” on the PTI campus is tailored to the industry’s specific needs. The airport has invested in infrastructure to create direct access from industrial sites to airport runways and to the airport itself from nearby interstates.
Regional government and business leaders have supported the Airport’s Authority’s efforts. And with good reason. Aerospace industry growth in the central North Carolina region is not confined to the airport campus.
Nearly 200 aerospace companies are located in the Piedmont Triad, a 12-county region anchored by the cities of Greensboro, High Point and Winston-Salem. These companies are providing thousands of jobs to skilled aviation workers. The companies have invested heavily in the region and are responsible for a significant expansion in the tax base.
“Aerospace growth is good for the airport, but more important, it’s good for the community,” Baker says. “Our mission is to support that growth in every way that we can.”
