THE KATIE SCHOOL The Katie School of Insurance and Risk Management at Illinois State University, established in 1991, offers a unique experience for the over 200 RMI majors and minors and 150 actuarial science students each year. Industry activities allow the undergraduates the opportunity to interact with business experts in a wide range of professional settings including industry conferences, chapter meetings of industry organizations, visits to board member companies, a Katie School alumni mentorship program, golf outings, student research projects and Katie School alumni events. The Gamma Iota Sigma Chapter provides a professional and social environment for students with community service events, engaged speakers, etiquette dinners, soft skill workshops, mock interviews and other enhancements. The Katie School International Internship Program allows students to intern internationally in insurance markets in London, Bermuda, Zurich and Johannesburg with internship opportunities in many domestic locations as well. A student chapter of Toastmasters further develops public speaking capabilities and the Katie School Certification in Leadership and Business Acumen Program enriches skills and knowledge that are sought after by industry employers. The Ambassador program sends our RMI majors into high school classes to enlighten this age group on the many careers and opportunities in the industry. Other high school outreach programs include the Midwest High School Scholars Analytics Academy, and the Redbird Risk Management Challenge. Additionally, the Katie School offers a wide array of industry programs including the Insurance Executive Forum, the Lloyd’s of London Conducting Business in the U.S. Program, the Katie School Hall of Fame, the Katie School Innovation and Leadership Awards, the Katie School Symposium, the Katie School Golf Classic, and the Katie School Financial Regulators Program. www.katieschool.org 309.438.3021

THE DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE, INSURANCE, AND LAW The Department of Finance, Insurance and Law (FIL) at Illinois State University offers a major in Finance and a major and minor in Risk Management and Insurance. The intended objectives of the Finance major and the Risk Management and Insurance major, as determined by the faculty, are to help students grow and develop the characteristics of a competent finance or risk management and insurance professional, a critical thinker, a professional with communication and interpersonal skills, and an ethical leader and decision-maker.

2019-2020 Katie School Certificate in Leadership and Business Acumen The purpose of the Katie School Certificate in Leadership and Business Acumen (CLBA) is to provide students with an opportunity to develop and demonstrate skills and knowledge sought after by industry employers, which they may not be able to attain from a traditional classroom experience. By demonstrating skills and knowledge in three categories, students who complete the certification should be well suited to enter and excel in the insurance industry. The three areas of focus are non-course technical skills, industry understanding and soft skills. There were

139 students participating in the CLBA program this year, and 5 students received their certification.

INSURANCE LICENSING AND PROFESSIONAL DESIGNATIONS—EXAM PARTS COMPLETED OR PASSED. I received an A in both FIL 352 and FIL 350 so, two of my CPCU exams are waived. I am currently working on the ethics modules to secure the confirmation of those two exams. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT DURING COLLEGE During my time in Delta Sigma Pi, I have been very involved within the community. I have participated in various events at the Midwest Food Bank, Ronald McDonald House, street clean ups, and Paws for a Cause. OTHER CAMPUS INVOLVEMENT AND PERSONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS Delta Sigma Pi has taken priority over a lot of my campus activities until I joined Gamma Iota Sigma. Both organizations have helped me develop into the person I am today. I have worked at school all four years so that also adds some challenges of timing to attend some events. CAREER GOALS I am beginning my career as an underwriting trainee on the large domestic casualty team at Zurich North America in Chicago. After a few years in Chicago, my manager has expressed to me some international opportunities that will become available. I would love to move to London, Zurich, or Barcelona one day to focus on expanding my knowledge of the international insurance market. Since my career is just beginning, it is difficult to place concrete goals on where I want to be and what I want to do. One of the many things I love about the insurance industry is that it is so vast and allows room for mobility.

I received a lot of exposure to underwriting, as I mainly worked on renewals in the excess and surplus lines under the property team. Along with underwriting renewals, I also handled numerous new business accounts. I really learned a lot over the summer and received exposure to other teams as well, such as casualty, healthcare, product recall, etc. I had the opportunity to travel to NYC with my teammates for a broker visit. From this experience, I learned the importance of building relationships with brokers and how to act in a professional setting with them. This upcoming summer, I will be working full-time for Great American Insurance Group in their LEAD Program, which not only will allow me to be an underwriter, but also train me for future management positions INSURANCE LICENSING AND PROFESSIONAL DESIGNATIONS—EXAM PARTS COMPLETED OR PASSED 2 exams for the CPCU, the CPCU 551 and the CPCU 552.
