During Covid–19, Thank you Manor Village, for demonstrating the difference between Long Term Care & Senior Supportive Care. We now understand. We continue to be disheartened that 79% of the deaths in Canada are elderly residents, living in Long Term Care Nursing Homes and Hospitals. Our hearts go out to their families. Most of these vulnerable seniors were suffering from Chronic Health Conditions.

CALGARY STAMPEDE... MORE THAN JUST A FEELING // BRAD FIELD
Calgary Stampede... More Than Just a Feeling BY BRAD FIELD
R
ight now, we should be shining our boots and dusting off our hats, but instead, we’re missing the Calgary Stampede.
Stampede also brings friendships, life skills and let’s not forget the pay cheques – those will be missed too, by both our young people and their parents.
You could hear the air come out of the city the day the Calgary Stampede Chairperson announced what we all assumed would happen, even as we hoped otherwise. Stampede 2020 will not go ahead as planned. While I wasn’t privy to the decision, I can empathize with the agony of having to make it. Hard times call for hard choices.
It’s been a hard couple of years in the world of Stampede commerce. While parties have slowed, businesses small and large still take part in a myriad of ways - business development with clients goes hand-in-hand with the call of the chuckwagon races, the 8-second bell and the Young Canadians singing in the evening show. All of that will be missed this year.
We’ve heard Stampede officials talk about community events and ensuring the Stampede spirit remains. That’s just it. The Calgary Stampede is not just 10 days in July where the pavement gets hot on the grounds, the smell of mini-donuts entices us, and we cheer on Ty and Straws in the infield, and Sutherlands and Glasses at the Rangeland Derby. The Calgary Stampede is bigger than what is undoubtedly the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth. The Stampede is a spirit, a feeling and it lives in Calgarians. It comes to life with hats on heads, boots on feet and pride in western heritage roots a country mile long. The world looks different this year; unfortunately, the Stampede has to look different as well. With the easing of restrictions, we could, in theory, get together in physically distant, appropriate numbers to eat pancakes and don our duds. Calgary is a city filled with volunteerism like nowhere else, and Stampede sees thousands of volunteers put in hundreds of thousands of hours to make it work well for everyone. Those volunteers are missing their work. Many of Calgary’s best and brightest get their first jobs with the Calgary Stampede. Much experience is gained from the on-the-job training, and the
Not to be forgotten are hotels, surrounding restaurants and even homeowners who open their homes for hospitality or yards for parking. As we recover and reopen, we need to help those who have lost so much. The world looks different; Stampede looks different; we have an opportunity to innovate because our summer vacations likely look different too. Treat your kids to a hotel staycation, your spouse to a night away, and order in from your favourite local restaurant. Ask your Stampede volunteer friends to tell you why they volunteer and what keeps them going back. Pay the neighbour kid $20 to cut your lawn, and chat with them about resiliency and innovation. Embody the Stampede spirit, with your boots and your hats on, or just your regular 355 day-a-year clothes. As a city, as a community, we need to work towards next year’s Stampede and make sure it returns to its regularly scheduled programming, with whatever adaptations the new world brings. Calgary needs the Stampede - and the Stampede is going to need all of us.

SENIOR SUPPORTIVE LIVING IN COMPARISON TO LONG TERM CARE // DEBBIE HYMAN
Senior Supportive Living in Comparison to Long Term Care BY DEBBIE HYMAN
T
he public has been bombarded with media reports of how severe this extreme Flu Virus has affected our senior population; especially those who reside at longterm care or nursing home facilities. You may not have been aware, that thousands of seniors in Calgary are living quite comfortably enjoying an interesting lifestyle in Supportive Living Residences, that have weathered the storm of COVID-19 with everyone healthy. Senior Supportive Living Centers cater to those seniors who need some assistance with the preparation of healthy cuisines plus housekeeping--including linens. The socialization with others, that stimulate memory games, with organized activities for entertainment are both creative and educational. These healthy seniors appreciate that care providing nurses are available when needed. Families are amazed when their loved ones often remark that they wished they would have made the move sooner to Senior Supportive Care. Imagine how lonely it is for a senior who has lost their spouse, and they are now living alone worried about the issues of maintaining their home. With loneliness comes inadequate nutrition, feeling unsafe and becoming anxious which can often lead to depression and dementia. Most seniors remark that they appreciated their children recommending they move to a Senior Supportive Care center. During COVID most senior living communities were closed to tours but if you searched you could find some that are safely offering opportunities to move-in. There are different levels of services in supportive living. Level 1 or Independent living is for those individuals seeking companionship and cognitive stimulation, freshly prepared

cuisine, housekeeping, transportation to appointments, and 24 hour emergency call and response. Level 2 is Supportive and Personalized Health Assistance for Medical Health Challenges includes the level 1 services, plus assistance with activities for daily living which includes bathing, personal hygiene, medication assistance, stocking assistance and mobility coaching for fall prevention. Level 3 or Enhanced Care is for those residents requiring enhanced nursing care. Enhanced care includes nursing services, which may include wound care, post-operative care, or palliative care for the senior with declining health. Level 4 Secured Memory Care is required to protect the senior who has declining memory. The services include social activities, stimulating Seeing is Believing entertainment using music as a source, and promoting stretch and flex mobility for an improved quality of life. Long Term Care or Nursing Home Care has received the majority of the COVID-19 press since March 2020. The senior deaths in Canada are mainly those living in these facilities, often showing comorbidities of chronic diseases that weaken their immune system. Seniors with complex, unpredictable medical needs requiring 24-hour onsite nursing services are the most vulnerable. Our sincere condolences go out to families with loved ones living in Long Term Care and Nursing Homes who have become an angel as a result of COVID-19. As well we appreciate beyond words, the front-line staff of senior supportive living residences who have participated in all the measures advised by Albert Health Services to prevent COVID-19 from entering their center. Tom Sanderson, founder and president of Summit Property Group.
SUMMIT PROPERTY GROUP
Looks to Expand
W
hen life sends us curveballs, sometimes we are able to hit them out of the park. This is true for Tom Sanderson who came out swinging when he moved to Calgary 20 years ago. Ready for a fresh start, he arrived with little more than a duffel bag, an unrivalled work ethic and an openness to whatever came his way. Within a few months he had created a fledgling company that he and his wife (Adrienne) have now grown to employ a staff of 70 people in Calgary and Edmonton as well as earned, a solid reputation in the industry. As the founder and president of Summit Property Group, Sanderson has carved out a property management niche in government services and is tackling the next stage of his business: franchising to expand the business model nationwide. Moving to Calgary at 44-years-old, broke and broken, Sanderson says “I had enough business experience and documented successes and failures”. He realized he just couldn’t rely upon one source of income or any one employer. A livelihood must be layered with multiple sources of income to allow proprietors to pull from Peter to pay Paul to keep a business moving. So that’s what he did. “I identified a niche Government Services market that could grow a successful business that affords a crisisproof business and a sustainable living for employees,” says Tom Sanderson. He credits some good fortune with his start in facility management and dogged entrepreneurial determination for his success. Coming off a painful divorce and business failure, he arrived in Calgary and stumbled upon a part-time job with an affordable housing group as a resident manager at a small building, which gave him a modest income and a place to live. It was also fortuitous timing, as the city was changing its business model from an employee-based system to a contracted one. This
opportunity gave Sanderson the freedom to be an owner/ operator and let his entrepreneurial spirit thrive. Within a matter of months from starting in this entrylevel position he established a business through which he contracted the property management services for at first one building and then additional locations. By his second anniversary he was managing 20 City affordable housing properties out of a home office, and as the company grew in scope and size he rented a residential garage, then a small office in the northeast, and for the past seven years the Summit team has worked out of a comfortable space in Ramsay on the outskirts of downtown Calgary. There, he and the Summit team coordinate the operation of two offices managing nearly 3,000 doors in Edmonton and the business touches around 10,000 doors in Calgary with annual revenues of over $5.5 million. As a not-for-profit business, Summit performs a multitude of facility management services for affordable housing locations in two Alberta cities including snow and landscaping management, janitorial services, garbage pick-up, handyman services, HVAC, building envelopes and tenant management services primarily for municipal, provincial and federal public sector customers. “We’re not a one-trick pony,” he says. “Our core business is Government services maintenance and that’s where the sustainable revenue streams grow from. We understand how to navigate the public work environment, which can be challenging, and our not-for-profit model resonates well with our mission and the government services sector.” Despite securing multi-year contracts in a variety of service areas including tenant management, eavestroughs, dryer vents, large item removal, grounds maintenance, parking lot cleaning, handyman contracts and capital asset management,

Summit takes nothing for granted. The team focuses on providing quantifiable value-add services beyond any client scope of work. Unlike any of the competition, Summit offers Property Management brokerage expertise with licensing in British Columbia and Alberta. While not required for government services, Property Management industry experience is one of many value-adds Summit can offer clients. Since the beginning, Sanderson and his team have gone above and beyond for client agencies and stakeholders. It is this reputation and high standards that clients say have made Summit their Go-to-Guys and One Stop Shop facility management company since 2000. Summit has shared its extensive expertise in the affordable housing market throughout Alberta and now Tom Sanderson is looking to duplicate his successful business model and expand the reach of the company across the country. As Summit was building out their property management division, Sanderson was retained as Managing Broker by Real Property Management, and while in that position Sanderson learned about the benefits of franchise business development and owner operator partnering. He realized that he could no longer profitably grow his business geographically in Alberta so finding like-minded entrepreneurs to duplicate his model across Canada was the next transforming journey for the brand.
Sanderson fields from jurisdictions across Canada looking for his services, it is in demand. “I don’t need to sell anyone a franchise to pick up a sale. I have no desire in that. I want to be able to mentor, help, guide, coach and provide tools that are going to help you grow your business. There is a real need for our services and opportunity with Summit to expand the brand nationally,” says Sanderson. Another exciting change, Sanderson’s two sons Wyatt and Tim have taken over the day to day management and business development roles as he focuses on business to business relationships and franchising the business. With Summit’s crisis-proof proven business model, the opportunities are extensive, offering a good, sustainable living in today’s marketplace. Tom Sanderson is excited to enter the next chapter of Summit Property Group’s story: welcoming entrepreneurs to the Summit family with the imminent launch of his franchise program. The sky truly is the limit with Summit. Summit is now prequalifying business partners prior to the formal launch of the Canadian franchise. For more information, please call Tom Sanderson or Brent Park at 877-669-1052 or email at franchise@spgmgt.com
“Franchising works. People want to be part of something bigger than themselves while still retaining their own independence as entrepreneurs. Owner/operators are the best partners,” he says. Potential partners are a diverse lot: mature business people looking to finally work for themselves, young entrepreneurs forging a path and people of any background regardless of education or skills training who are willing to work hard. Summit’s model makes it easier. It’s a proven facility management model geared toward government services and, given the frequent enquiries

Canada’s Economic Recovery
CAN BE CLEAN
T
he dual shock of the COVID-19 pandemic and the collapse of natural resource prices has many Calgary businesses worrying about survival. While an economic recovery is certainly coming, it is predicted to be long and painful. But one organization sees this as an opportunity. “If you’re forced into a corner, new ideas are going to emerge. New ways of making sure that we can still survive will take over.” Kevin Nilsen is the president and chief executive officer of ECO Canada, the Calgary-based organization that is the steward of Canada’s environmental workforce. Established in 1992 to support the emerging environmental sector, it has expanded its mandate into employment funding for new environment-related positions at companies, direct human resources consulting for businesses, and providing leading-edge research into environmental sector trends. A recent research report completed just before the pandemic took hold provides a compelling framework for the analysis of one of the world’s fastest-growing economic sectors: clean technologies, or “cleantech.” This is an industry sector already being noted for its expected role in advancing the economic recovery so desired at this time.
the scope of the Cleantech sector, but lays out in compelling detail why it presents such tremendous opportunity to aid the type of economic recovery that Canada will want. “Canada is number one in the world with ideas and research and development in this space, but we’re number 16 in the world when it comes to commercializing and capitalizing on cleantech and generating revenue from it. It shows that we’re really good at innovation and ideas, and we’re investing a lot in that, but we’re not getting the return we should. There’s no reason for us to be the top spot in one category and number 16 in the other. We should be number one in both,” Mr. Nilsen explains. ECO Canada’s research into the cleantech sector details why this is so important. According to the report, the global export market for Cleantech products and services amounted to $1.2 trillion in 2015, an increase of 76 per cent from its estimated total of $880 billion in 2008. Pre COVID-19 it was forecast to more than double to $2.5 trillion by 2022, and of the total global market, Canada’s share represents just under 1.5 per cent. Mr. Nilsen believes this is the result of the prevailing culture of opposition to any talk of monetizing environmental causes.
According to Mr. Nilsen, “in its simplest terms, cleantech is any technological process, product or service that will increase performance, decrease cost, minimize negative impacts on the environment, and ensure more efficient use of natural resources.”
“In certain segments of the population, talking about protecting the environment is seen as against big business and it’s against profit seekers. Profit is too often seen as evil. We need to make sure that it’s not just finding out what’s best to save the world, it’s also about, ‘how can we make it profitable?’”
The report, entitled, “Cleantech Defined: A Scoping Study of the Sector and its Workforce”, not only defines

advantage of the cleantech sector’s growth in the near term. We can capitalize on the financial opportunity by seizing market share and creating new jobs that support the country’s economic recovery.
“It really is a win-win-win concept,” Mr. Nilsen points out. “If Canada succeeds in capitalizing on the opportunity, the labour market will succeed, businesses will grow, and the environment will be protected.”
“Cleantech is one of those high-return potentials that, I think, Calgary needs to present itself as a hub for. We have an abundance of highly competent people. A lot of really good people are now looking for work. Calgary also has a strong culture of project management. This is a place where there has been a good investment climate historically. You get good people, and we have the infrastructure, so Calgary is really well positioned to capitalize on this,” notes Nilsen.
Beyond its research, ECO Canada is at the forefront of nurturing this sector.
This fundamental strength in the quality and availability of human resources can put Calgary at the forefront, with an abundance of skilled engineers, project managers, and financiers that can lead industry and business into a new frontier. This push is also supported by the Government of Canada, which has invested over $2 billion into the cleantech sector growth since 2017. As the country looks for new ways to stimulate the economy and job growth, experts are pointing to cleantech as a sector in which the government can invest and industry can focus on.
“We do extensive labour market research to try and uncover trends and opportunities that are facing environmental employment and then we try to pitch programs and advice and solutions to both capitalize on the opportunities that our research is suggesting, and programs to support covering some of the gaps and shortfalls. So, we support with a total HR strategy, and that’s how we support the industry.” Nilsen and his team have recently begun researching the market again to determine the impacts of the pandemic and to see where efforts are best placed to continue pushing Canada’s environmental workforce forward. To read the ECO Cleantech Report and to access other reports, visit www.eco.ca.
ECO Canada’s research found that investment growth was being fueled by climate policies that have necessitated the development of innovative solutions to reduce greenhouse gases and other negative environmental impacts. A combination of policy and technological advances has been leading to the development of new climate solutions and economic development opportunities that promise a sustained demand for clean technologies.

Although the report was put together prior to the pandemic, its findings about how Canada’s existing workforce can fill the needs of the cleantech sector is an important point towards turning to cleantech in the future.

THE LOCKDOWN CALGARY’S SMALL BUSINESS COMMUNITY LOOKS FORWARD TO BETTER DAYS BY MELANIE DARBYSHIRE
U
nprecedented. It’s the word most often used to describe the times we’re living in. The COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing lockdown has forced Calgary’s small business community to adapt and cope. From complete shutdowns to spikes in demand, these businesses are doing their best to ride out the pandemic wave as unscathed as possible. In this month’s cover story, we hear from four local business owners on how they are managing and looking to the future.

Barcelona Tavern Like most other restaurants in this city, Barcelona Tavern was forced to shut its doors when the pandemic hit. “We actually closed before the government mandated it, because we felt it was in the best interests of our staff and customers,” says Jeff Hanna, Managing Partner. “Of course not realizing that it was going to go on for so long. We thought it would be a three or four-week thing.”
SURVIVING THE LOCKDOWN // COVER
“We’re very excited to be back up and running.” “When someone walks through the door we roll out the red carpet to make sure they feel like a million bucks,” Hanna says. “We’re so thankful they chose to come here. We want them to feel totally comfortable and safe, have fun and enjoy our delicious food. We want to gain that loyalty and trust again from everybody and are truly hoping that everyone comes out to support us since we’re locally owned and operated.”
Most of the 60 staff members were temporarily laid off, and though a delivery service was not initially in place, one was started in April. “We’ve had good traction on it, but it’s super competitive too,” Hana says. “We have a backyard barbecue program with a focus on family-style meals. More classycomfort food that’s going to hit home not just with our regular day-to-day corporate crowd, but with families and everybody else.” They chose to forgo the use of a third-party delivery service due to the cost. “They make all the money,” Hanna laments. “We didn’t see the value in doing that. It’s mostly curbside pickup and we will personally deliver to friends, family and our valued customers.” Barcelona’s catering business has continued in operation as well: “We just recently catered a 40th birthday where we hand-delivered everything and picked it all up the next day dishes and everything.” Once re-opened on June 1st, the focus was on doing everything as perfectly as possible. “It’s about gaining trust from our clientele so that they know that we’re doing everything that is required, but also going above and beyond to make sure they feel completely safe and comfortable in this environment.” The large space of the restaurant means the 50 per cent capacity restrictions are easily met, as well as all Alberta Health Services requirements (including mask wearing for all staff). “We’re following all the best practices, and otherwise it’s business according to the new normal,” Hanna says.
Bon Ton Meat Market Qualifying as an essential service and thereby remaining open throughout the pandemic, Bon Ton Meat Market has experienced a surge in business since the shutdown began. “We’re up over 50 per cent,” says owner Greg Keller. “About 20 per cent of that is through the store, but the vast majority is phone-in orders and curbside pickup. We’ve seen a swell of people who don’t want to go shopping three times a week for their fresh meat, so they buy a big order ever two to three weeks.” Specializing in high-quality, locally-sourced fresh meat as well as desserts and specialty deli products, Bon Ton has had to

adjust its operations to the current situation. “We used to be able to complete same-day orders but not anymore,” Keller explains. “Our customers have been very understanding.” Operations inside the store have been adjusted too. “We talked to Alberta Health Services and based on the type of business we are we now let one customer in for every staff member that is available to serve them,” Keller explains. “We have somebody at the door explaining the distancing protocols to our customers. The vast majority of people are great. We’re very aware of making sure increased sanitation procedures are strictly followed.” Maintaining an adequate supply of product to meet the demand has been no issue. “Our pork and poultry are from local suppliers and we’ve had no issues,” Keller says. “Our beef is Canada Prime and certified Angus and we always carry at least a month and a half to two months supply, because we age it. When the pandemic began, we bought another month’s supply.” Bon Ton also sourced beef from restaurant suppliers who wound up with a large surplus of beef when restaurants, conventions and events were forced to close or cancel. “Some of those suppliers carry the same high-end beef that we do, so we stepped in and bought a ton from them. We’ve had no issue whatsoever with supply.” A stellar staff has been Keller’s saving grace. “I really am very humbled and moved by how amazing my staff has been,” he praises. “We’ve had no grumbling, no complaining. We are all in this together.” “I think it was a good time for everybody to slow down and ask themselves some hard questions,” he continues. “When we really look at it, we realized rock bottom is a good foundation to build dreams upon. This provides a fresh start for a lot of people.” “Everybody sees each other, and we evolve together,” Biedermann reflects. “It’s like that Freud saying: ‘One day in retrospect, the years of struggle are going to strike you as the most beautiful.’” Supreme has continued to transform throughout the shutdown, including shifting towards an all gender inclusive shopping experience. “Many changes are occurring at Supreme,” Biedermann explains. “We’d like to have something of interest for absolutely everybody that comes

We’re always trying to use Supreme in every possible way to pull together community.” Supreme continues to live by its vision of being an authentic, vibrant and connected cornerstone of our community: “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”
Warner Shelter Systems Limited For fifty years, Warner Shelter Systems Limited (WSSL) has manufactured tents for a range of special events, trade shows, catering and outdoor concerts to warehousing and industrial use. From its 10-acre plant in Calgary’s Foothills Industrial park, WSSL sells and rents its tents across NorthAmerica and abroad, with long-term clients including the Calgary Stampede (a contract held since 1984). When the pandemic lockdown happened in mid-March, its operations went quiet. “No one knew what was going to happen next,” says Chad Struthers, Vice President. “We kept our construction crew and office staff, but the manufacturing, steel shop and fabric shop were off for a month.” By mid-May, approximately half of the business’ 60 full-time employees were back to work, thanks to two new contracts for car lot canopies. The hail canopy business began in 2015 when local car dealerships lost their hail insurance. The use of canopy covers - initially intended to protect car dealerships strictly from hail - has the added benefit of also providing cover against snow, rain and sun, allows for pleasant experience for dealers’ clientele and keeps detailing and snow removal budgets down. This protection has grown in popularity with local dealers. In May, WSSL received its 31st and 32nd contracts. “Our product provides 365 day-per-year coverage,” Struthers says proudly. “Customers can walk around and look at vehicles
completely covered from all the elements. Dealerships have a lot less cleanup and their detailing shops have less to do. Our customers are over the moon, really happy.” With hail season spanning roughly from June 15 to August 15, WSSL is busy. “The last two contracts we signed - with Infinity Ford in Carstairs and Tricycle Lane Ranch, a division of Burnco that provides offsite storage for Lone Star Mercedes - happened in May, and we said we’d be able to get their canopies installed before the end of June. That’s as good as you’re going to get when you order a month ahead in this day and age.” WSSL sold some tents for COVID testing, but the cancellation of this year’s Stampede was a major blow, as was the restriction on large-scale events, the tents for which WSSL almost exclusively supplies in Calgary. With the easing of restrictions on events of less than 50 people, Struthers is optimistic this business will pick up into the summer. A major contract with the Department of National Defence for a training project in Wainwright scheduled for midMarch was postponed, but Struthers is confident it will be rescheduled soon. “We’re quite diverse,” Struthers points out. “Between oil and gas, construction, government, events and the car lots we have a variety of industries to rely on if one or more gets shut down. We’re lucky in that way.”

ASK SAM
Q
SAM COREA ON SUMMER REAL ESTATE MARKET PREDICTIONS
Q: What do you predict will happen this summer in real estate now that businesses are reopening?
Home Sales Will Pick Up in the Summer Months Normally the summer is quieter than the spring and fall real estate markets. Buyers are busy enjoying outdoor activities, on holiday or entertaining guests. But this year will be very different. Since travel plans have been postponed and the Stampede and festivals have been cancelled people will be staying closer to home. Therefore, the summer months will be the ideal time for them to purchase a new home. Additionally, most buyers who had planned to purchase in the spring put their plans on hold during March, April and May. Now that restrictions are lifting, safety precautions are in place, and technology has made it possible to view homes virtually through 3D tours they are comfortable resuming their search for a new home. During the last few months home owners have reassessed their needs and they will be ready to act quickly and get settled before the late fall. I predict that showing activity and home sales will pick up this summer. The next 90 days will be the busiest in real estate this year.
Safety Precautions and Adaptations will Continue We quickly adapted how we provide service to our clients in the early stages of the pandemic and remain focused on their health and wellness as they buy and sell homes. In addition to maintaining a safe distance, we properly sanitize and wear protective masks and gloves. We have increased our use of 3D tours to showcase our listings and give buyers a sense of the property without having to walk through. As well, we carefully vet the houses we are showing, our buyers and our sellers to ensure they have not come in contact or are exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19. We will maintain these adaptations and precautions throughout the summer and into the rest of 2020.

THE NEVER-ENDING SAGA OF THE KEYSTONE XL PIPELINE // OIL & GAS
THE NEVER-ENDING SAGA OF THE
KEYSTONE XL PIPELINE
BY ANTHONY LADIPO
A
s oil and gas pipelines go, none has faced as much pushback as the Keystone XL (KXL) pipeline, a planned 1,210-mile, $8-billion structure expected to carry 830,000 barrels of oil, per day, from Alberta, Canada, to Steele City, Nebraska. Angered that the pipeline will transport oil across environmentally sensitive areas of the Great Plains, threaten some states’ water supply, and contribute negatively to climate change, environmentalists have sought to stop it in its tracks. Encouraged that it will stimulate the U.S. economy, put the U.S. further along a course to energy independence, and provide a cheap and safe means of crude transport, backers of the pipeline have sought to push forward despite the opposition.
Embattled since its proposal in 2008, the long-delayed project has, most recently, been slapped with a federal court ruling in Montana that revokes a state water-crossing permit needed for continued construction. It’s a major setback for TC Energy Corp. and comes just weeks after the company’s pipeline was given $7 billion in financial support from the government of Alberta to keep building. Given the last decade of such legal, political and regulatory whiplash, how can a project that promises so much, economically, move forward? The delay from the judge’s decision will not immediately affect the project schedule, as other activities and sections of the pipeline can be constructed while TC Energy works through the legal and regulatory proceedings to secure the

permit. The company still proposes completion by 2023, regardless of the anticipated year-long delay the ruling poses and the potential to lose up to what some had placed at nearly $1 billion should such a delay occur. This also is regardless of the turnout of the 2020 presidential election, which might bring other regulatory hurdles should President Donald Trump, a pipeline proponent, be defeated.
Lending perspective Opposition to the pipeline has little to do with its technical or even regulatory complexity, as thousands of miles of lines have been approved in the past 10 years. The challenges TC Energy faces are symptoms of a larger, underlying issue—the negative narrative and drive to eliminate Alberta’s oil sands. KXL is simply a means to achieving that end. The groups in opposition to the extraction of the oil sands genuinely believe KXL is not in the best interest of society and the environment, and they have developed a strong coalition against the line. These individuals and groups might have good intentions, but their means to achieving their ends are questionable to some. After all, is disrupting this pipeline going to reduce reliance on fossil fuels? Probably not. If people intend on maintaining their current lifestyles and driving habits, then the cancellation of the KXL line will only change their oil supplier. The question then becomes, does the U.S. want to import the oil it uses from a country with a strong regulatory system (i.e., Canada), or from countries with little or no regulatory oversight (i.e., those in the Middle East)? An underlying assumption in this entire conversation is that all alternatives would be better than the Alberta oil sands; however, this line of reasoning could also be questioned. The increased scrutiny of the oil sands has led to the development of stringent regulatory frameworks in Alberta and this cannot be said of many competing sources. The KXL has been heavily scrutinized from day one and in a world where regulations are open to subjective interpretation, their enforcement will depend on the leanings of the enforcer. If the body enforcing the regulations is opposed to the project, there are many ways can interpret the regulations and develop ways to delay or halt the pipeline’s construction. There is a saying that goes,
“If a police officer follows you for long enough, they will find a reason to pull you over.” KXL has been followed and pulled over by regulators, activists and special interests for the past 10 years and there is no guarantee this will stop with the resolution of the ruling in Montana. Ultimately, this is about the ability of TC Energy to go the distance and persevere; to ensure that capital and contracts are set up to withstand delays; and to resolve as many conflicts as possible, taking into account that favoring governments might change hands.
Perception is everything It also is a public-relations issue. The question TC Energy faces is, “How do we influence public perception and change the narrative?” Because media plays a critical role in the debate, one might go so far as to suggest that TC Energy create a documentary. Invest in a high-quality, interesting story that gives an honest perspective on the oil sands. Showcase the real issues as well as the positives including how oil and gas production benefits people (actual flesh and blood). Forego statistics and numbers; instead of indicating how many jobs will be produced, let’s see a family that has benefitted from oil and gas work. Show the damage that the cancellation of a project does to people who live in the affected towns along the pipeline. We’ve seen the economic damage that one worldwide epidemic, COVID-19, has caused in communities across the globe. Perhaps the story, too, is that KXL can help jumpstart a community’s economy in this difficult time.

Certainly, it can be no less effective than our government spending billions on a shortterm stimulus package to keep businesses running through this challenging and historic time. Many environmentalists have called the Keystone Pipeline the “Zombie Project” because no matter how many times it gets knocked down, it keeps coming back. While the word “zombie” has a negative connotation to it, it does attest to TC Energy’s commitment to getting the pipeline built. What TC Energy must now attest to is its commitment to reduce pipeline leaks – to show that the newest refining technology won’t give opponents further ammunition.

The Keystone XL pipeline won’t be the last pipeline to face opposition, but it is the first major infrastructure of its kind to be met by an economic crisis of global proportions. The developer of the pipeline has an opportunity to strike while the iron is hot and demonstrate its potential contribution to the economy of Central U.S. and Western Canada, and its potential role in providing market access to oil producers in these areas once the demand for energy rebounds. Now is the time to step up its PR game, primarily by educating the American public on its potential ability to help spark and even prolongate an economic recovery.

o doubt about it! The first half of 2020 has been historically challenging for Calgary. The COVID lockdown, the economy and the jarring global oil price crash have been unprecedented broadsides for most aspects of Calgary business. While all of Canada is reeling from the social and economic impact of the lockdown and collapsed oil prices creep upward, a hopeful and much-awaited Calgary kick-start is happening in different ways in different areas. According to the recent report by the Conference Board of Canada, national GDP growth is forecast to decline by 4.3 per cent for the balance of the year. The report also forecasts that Alberta’s economy will likely be the hardest hit in the country, due to the double whammy of the pandemic and the oil crisis. There is light at the end of the tunnel! The undaunted Calgary business spirit is sparking a gradual but encouraging outlook. There is Calgary business consensus that the past few months have been risk management at its absolute unexpected, unpredictable worst and something the most experienced and savvy business leaders could never have anticipated. “It’s impossible to properly prepare for a near total shutdown of the economy,” says Gerry Wood the iconic Calgary entrepreneur, philanthropist, Order of Canada medal recipient and president of the Wood Automotive Group. “The entire community was told to stay home. Health officials ordered businesses to shut down. Almost overnight, revenues dropped to near zero for thousands of businesses. Some staff had to be laid off, others had to be taught how to work from home. Rents came due. Suppliers had to be paid, and there was basically no business being done.” The unique uncertainties of the necessary risk management were a major broadside for most Calgary businesses. “The problem is in the not knowing. The uncharted waters” admits Charron Ungar, CEO of the Homes by Avi Group of Companies. “There is very little to grasp on to for comparables to this situation and, when it comes to business, it makes for a constant gut check for decisions moving forward.”
The response of Calgary business is a prime example and validates the well-intentioned cliché that ‘when the going gets tough, the tough gets going.’ “Business owners need to be resilient and flexible during these unconventional times,” notes Milena Radakovic the innovative president of Nexus Exhibits, the visual branding solutions company specializing in exhibits and interior décor branding. “Good entrepreneurs are visionary and need to be able to pivot their business under difficult circumstances to support not only their business but the community.” Just as the multi-dimensional lockdown impacts different businesses in different ways and there are common thread aspects of the business new normal, different sectors and businesses are moving forward in different ways. “Businesses must be able to adapt quickly, find new ways to move forward and have empathy for their clients,” says the respected Calgary Realtor Sam Corea. “It’s important to get feedback from clients and find out what protocols need to be in place for their comfort. It’s critical to educate them on what protocols and changes you have made to meet those needs.” “During the first few months of 2020 we were seeing an increase in sales activity and improved consumer confidence. After the pandemic hit, the market practically ground to a halt in the middle of March through May. By June, Calgary buyers became more comfortable. We anticipate that July, August and September will see more improvement,” Corea explains. “Normally the summer months are a slower time but with so many people staying home and not travelling the sales activity will increase.” Gerry Wood speaks from the wisdom and expertise of more than 25 years of Calgary business. “Business must be optimistic but realistic and the confidence that we will get through this crisis. Business must also embrace new technology and new ways to do business in the new normal. Staff must be looked after and business has to be more responsive than ever to the needs of customers and clients and adjust the way business is done to meet their needs. Business has to Work closely with vendors and suppliers, pay

attention, be nimble and be ready to pivot on short notice when needed.” According to Ungar, a key to business recovery is approach. “Cash is king, so limiting spending to the most pressing opportunities and commitments is vital. Combining that conservative approach with our best efforts to stay nimble and lean is key. “The other must-do is communication: from company to clients, establishing safety protocols for our sales centres and updates for homeowners about warranty processes, company updates for staff about what is happening and how the company is performing and between the leadership team and the company decision makers. Everyone must be on the same page with clear direction moving forward.”
Radakovic agrees. “Having good, transparent, open communication is always the best way to communicate with clients and customers. Asking for what kinds of support they need, under the circumstances, can help business owners come up with creative ideas to support them during crises.”

It’s unanimous. Now more than ever, as business moves forward, consumer confidence is a critical factor. “We have been pleasantly surprised how our customers have rallied around us over the past few months and we are really encouraged,” Wood points out with enthusiasm. “It’s more important than ever to work with each individual customer and client, take the steps needed to demonstrate to consumers that the business and the staff are taking all the precautions required to keep customers safe and that they can have confidence coming into the place of business.” “Advertise! POSITIVE BUT CAUTIOUS IS GERRY WOOD’S ADVICE. “BE OPTIMISTIC BUT ALSO REALISTIC. KEEP YOUR FINGER ON THE PULSE OF WHAT’S HAPPENING AND BE READY TO RESPOND TO CHANGES AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. WE HAVE ALL HEARD ABOUT THE THREAT OF A SECOND WAVE. UNDERSTAND AND

Give consumers good reasons to come into your place of business and they will come.” For many Calgary businesses, the sudden impact of the lockdown is easing and moving forward has kicked-in. When it comes to new homes, “We are seeing pent up demand,” Ungar adds. “Interest rates are at their lowest and we have the deepest price cuts and best inventory in years. There is ultimately unprecedented opportunity in crisis.” A basic of risk management is planning for ---the next time! “When the next wave happens, I doubt if Calgary or the country will close down like it just did. We have learned a lot as a community and country,” Radakovic says. For Ungar, readying for the possibility of a next time is tricky. “When assessing risk, the variables are just too great and certainty is a distant illusion. While we are conservative in our decision making, there is still a greater reliance on crossing fingers and hoping for the best.” Sam Corea emphasizes that “Managing cash flow and having several months of operating budget set aside is more important than ever. There will always be new challenges set in front of us, so really the best thing to do to prepare is to be flexible and adaptable and be able to implement new ways of doing business quickly.” Positive but cautious is Gerry Wood’s advice. “Be optimistic but also realistic. Keep your finger on the pulse of what’s happening and be ready to respond to changes as quickly as possible. We have all heard about the threat of a second wave. Understand and plan for it. Don’t go into the deep end of the pool until you’ve tested the waters and know they are safe.”

GREENSIDE, HEAVY ROUGH, DOWNHILL LIE, CLOSE PIN. NOW WHAT? // SCOTT ORBAN
McKenzie Meadows Golf Tip: Greenside, Heavy Rough, Downhill Lie, Close Pin. Now What? BY SCOTT ORBAN, PGA EXECUTIVE PROFESSIONAL, MCKENZIE MEADOWS GOLF CLUB
T
his situation takes a lot of confidence. A little practice would be good too. When we are this close we often want to use our chipping technique, but with deeper rough this would be the wrong selection. The heavy rough makes it difficult because the club will not have the velocity it needs to cut through this rough. Using a bigger swing with more velocity makes us nervous because if we happen to top the ball it will go well beyond the distance we need it to. You need to select the correct technique, the right club and then commit to the swing. In this case you should select the pitch technique and the highest lofted club you have. Typically, this would be a sand wedge. Open the club up a little to create a little more loft and to allow the club to cut right through the rough. If you open it too much (especially with a lob wedge) you risk going right under the ball. When opening the clubface it will change the alignment right of the target (right hand golfers). Thus you will need to modify your set up to compensate for this change in direction. Now select the pitch swing. This is a small version of the full swing where the club loads with some wrist hinge in the backswing and the follow through. The chip swing is a much smaller arch swing and resembles that of a putt swing with no wrist hinge. Take a few practice swings on the slope to gauge rough and to prepare yourself to commit to this swing. Now go for it! Give yourself this situation near the practice green so you can experience this and get a sense of how this works. If it works without any practice, then you should go buy a lotto ticket. Have a look at the video to get a better sense of how to accomplish this. https://youtu.be/Klx3LqD2jcY.

#Here4YYC
Operating safely with COVID-19
#Here4YYC The Province of Alberta has announced their plan to cautiously reduce some of the physical distancing measures that have been in place since March 15, 2020. This will be a slow, phased approach that puts public health at the forefront. Learn more about the government approach here. Since the beginning of COVID-19, The Chamber has been #Here4YYC, supporting your business when you need it most. We continue to have your back and will support you in re-opening your business. We have compiled the below resources to support your business through the next phase of COVID-19. As this is a phased approached, business owners need to be flexible and prepared to close if cases of COVID-19 spike in the future.
Toolkit COVID-19 is changing the way businesses operate. The key to operating safely is keeping employees and customers safe while enhancing the customer experience.
Step One: Develop a Task Force Develop a Task Force (similar to a safety or fire task force) of cross-functional stakeholders in the organization. The Task Force should: • Be made up of three to five people, • Include one senior leader, one middle manager and one staff/line employee, • Designate a decision maker on the Task Force, allowing quick and effective implementing of your COVID-19 strategy, • Stay up to date with changing guidelines and policies from federal, provincial, and municipal governments. This Task Force will be responsible for developing a COVID-19 prevention strategy in your workplace, as well as ensuring guidelines and best practices are followed by all staff and customers.
42
JULY 2020 // BUSINESS IN CALGARY // BUSINESSINCALGARY.COM
Once your Task Force has been established, consider these guidelines:
Step Two: Prepare your workspace • • • • • • • • • • •
Assign COVID-19 Task Force (similar to fire marshals) to lead your COVID-19 prevention plan. Define appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for your workplace. Develop a screening protocol for your employees to take before every shift. Perform a deep clean of your workspace. Alberta Health Services offers these guidelines for cleaning of public spaces. We recommend hiring a professional cleaner to preform and initial deep clean of your workspace. Implement procedures for increased frequency of cleaning and disinfecting of high traffic areas including; common areas, public washrooms and showering facilities. Create a proper physical distancing set up, establish rules, and set up your business accordingly. Leverage signage and spatial markings to ensure co-workers always operate at six feet apart. Post external signs indicating COVID-19 physical distancing protocols, along with floor markings where service is provided or lines form. Ensure entry into the business, including lines, are regulated to prevent congestion. Set up your business with a single point of entry. No more than 15 people may gather in common areas. Congregation of people should be actively discouraged.
Step Three: Prepare your employees • • • •
• • • • • •
Screen your employees before every shift to ensure they are healthy and have not been in contact with anyone with COVID-19. Employees exhibiting any COVID-19 symptoms must stay home and follow quarantine guidelines. Provide PPE for all employees including masks, gloves, hand sanitzer and possibly face shields. Provide employees with everything they need to keep their work surfaces clean, including disposable wipes, hand soap, paper towels, disinfectants, and alcohol-based sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol. Educate your staff on physical distancing. Discourage employees from sharing each others equipment including phones, computers and tools. Train staff in proper hygiene procedures. Reduce the number of employees on site through alternating workdays or shifts. Communicate weekly with your employees to ensure compliance. Check in regularly on the mental health of employees.
Step Four: Prepare your customers •
• • • • • •
Post guidelines at the entrance of your business regarding your expectations for customer behaviour including physical distancing, PPE usage and to not enter if they are exhibiting any symptoms. Require that customers use hand sanitizer upon entering. Limit the number of people in your business to ensure six feet physical distancing can be maintained. Place tape in high traffic areas to direct flow and keep six feet between customers. Update your website to reflect the new rules and any other operating changes. No more than 15 people may gather in common areas or at one table. Reach out to the Chamber to aid with communicating the changes and readiness of your business for customers
Step Five: Prepare your customers • • • • • •
Sales registers should be six feet apart. Avoid cash exchanges and encourage tap payment when possible. Install screens between staff and customers if necessary. Disinfect transaction areas after each transaction. Consider home delivery, take out, drive through and curbside pick-up options where applicable. Post a sign for deliveries outlining expectations (PPE, hand sanitizer, masks).

lways interested in words, I wonder who came up with the phrase ‘social distancing’ to describe measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Sounds nice but wouldn’t ‘physical distancing’ be a better descriptive? The Brits came up with a new word to describe those who were silly enough to ignore the need to physical distance – Covidiots. And in the same newspaper I read a humorous re-write of a popular nursery rhyme – “Humpty Trumpty Sat on a Wall”
His father was station agent at Standard for 42 years and now Knowlton has been the prime donor in developing Memory Lane Park in that community with the construction of a replica of its old station and the donation of a finely renovated red CPR caboose. Worth a visit.
And last note on Covid-19 – John Dong of Royal Liquor Stores told me the sales of a popular Mexican beer were way down at the time we all knew the pandemic as Coronavirus.
Booking meetings via Zoom has been a useful convenience of late but I find a problem in that when people book for a certain length of time, they tend to use it all no matter if the business had been completed in a much shorter time.
I wonder why Tourism Vancouver already had the appointment of Royce Chwin as its new CEO on its website before any announcement was forthcoming about him leaving his position as CEO Travel Alberta.
Seems a bit tough that standing too close meant a $1,200 fine while failing to stop at a stop sign cost around $280 plus demerits.
