As one of the UK’s 15 National Parks, the Broads’ beautiful landscape, diverse wildlife and important cultural heritage are all protected – making sure they can be enjoyed for many years to come.
The Broads National Park is situated in East Anglia, England spanning the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk and is less than 2 hours’ drive from London. It is made up of over 60 open areas of water known as Broads and seven rivers, the Ant, Bure, Chet, Thurne, Waveney, Wensum and Yare.
A rich past and a vibrant present
The Broads were originally dug out in medieval times to provide peat for fuel. In the 14th century, these peat diggings flooded, creating the beautiful waterways we see today.
By the 19th century, the rich boating heritage of these waterways made them an obvious destination for those who enjoyed the increasingly popular pastime of pleasure boating. Today, the Broads is Britain’s third largest inland navigation area and the beauty and tranquillity of its lakes and landscapes attracts around eight million visitors every year.

What to do in the Broads
One of the defining features of the Broads is the many windmills you’ll see dotted around the landscape. Once used to grind corn or flour, or to provide drainage, many of these have been restored to become popular visitor attractions.
The National Trust-owned, five storey Horsey Windpump is a must for anyone interested in the role these feats of engineering played in shaping the landscape of the Broads. Not to mention the fantastic views that will greet you from the top floor!

History
History of The SuffolkNorfolk Broads the
Few landscapes in England capture the imagination quite like the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads. Today, they are celebrated as a national park, renowned for their beauty, tranquillity, and wildlife. Yet the story of the Broads is not one of untouched wilderness, but of centuries of human intervention and the way nature reclaimed the land. To understand the Broads is to trace a remarkable history of industry, decline, rediscovery, and conservation.
Origins: A Landscape Shaped by People
For many years, it was assumed that the Broads were entirely natural. Their wide expanses of water and winding rivers appeared to be the product of glacial activity or gradual flooding. It was not until the mid-20th century that the true origins of the Broads were revealed.
In the 1960s, botanist Dr Joyce Lambert conducted pioneering research that transformed understanding of the region. By studying soil layers and peat deposits, she demonstrated that the Broads were not naturally formed lakes at all, but the flooded remains of medieval peat diggings. From the 12th to the 14th centuries, local communities across Norfolk and Suffolk dug deep pits to extract peat, which was a vital source of fuel for heating and cooking.
The demand was driven in part by the growing population of nearby towns such as Norwich, Great Yarmouth, and King’s Lynn, as well as by monastic institutions which required large supplies of fuel. Vast quantities of peat were cut by hand using long-handled tools, stacked to dry, and transported by river. Over time, the excavations became deeper and more extensive, creating a patchwork of pits across the landscape.
By the late medieval period, a combination of factors brought peat cutting to an end. Rising sea levels, subsidence, and poor drainage meant that many of the workings flooded and could no longer be used. Abandoned by industry, they gradually filled with water, forming the shallow lakes and broads we recognise today. In effect, a landscape of necessity and labour was transformed into one of leisure and natural beauty.
Monks, Merchants, and Maritime Connections
The Broads became integral to medieval commerce. The rivers of Norfolk and Suffolk were natural highways, linking inland towns to the coast. The wherry, a flat-bottomed sailing vessel with a single large sail, became the symbol of this trade. Wherries transported wool, grain, fish, timber, and peat along the waterways, connecting the Broads to the wider North Sea economy.
Monasteries also played a role in shaping the landscape. The Benedictine Priory at Norwich Cathedral and the abbeys of St Benet’s and Wymondham were significant landholders with rights over parts of the Broads. They managed fisheries, mills, and farmland, and used the waterways for trade. St Benet’s Abbey, standing sentinel on the River Bure, remains an enduring landmark and a reminder of this religious influence.
By the late Middle Ages, however, the decline of peat cutting and silting of waterways reduced the region’s economic significance. The Broads were increasingly valued for their fisheries and grazing marshes, supporting rural communities that adapted to the changing environment.
Georgian and Victorian Rediscovery
The 18th and 19th centuries marked a new phase in the Broads’ history. While the waterways continued to serve as transport routes for agricultural goods, the Industrial Revolution introduced competition from railways and roads. Yet it was during this period that the Broads began to attract a new audience: leisure visitors.
The Romantic movement encouraged a fascination with nature, landscape, and rural life. Writers and artists celebrated the Broads as a picturesque destination. The publication of works such as Richard Lubbock’s Observations on the Fauna of Norfolk (1845) highlighted the richness of the region’s wildlife, drawing naturalists and collectors.
The Victorian period also saw the beginning of organised boating holidays. The wherry,
once a vessel of trade, was adapted for pleasure cruising. By the late 19th century, purposebuilt yachts were being constructed for hire, catering to wealthy families seeking holidays in the countryside. The Broads became a fashionable retreat, offering fresh air, scenic views, and the novelty of life afloat.
Railways extended this accessibility. Lines connecting Norwich, Wroxham, Yarmouth, and Lowestoft brought city dwellers and tourists from London and beyond. Local entrepreneurs recognised the potential of tourism, with inns, boatyards, and guides springing up to serve the growing market.
The 20th Century: From Decline to Protection
The 20th century brought challenges as well as opportunities. Industrialisation elsewhere and agricultural intensification in Norfolk and Suffolk altered the ecological balance of the Broads. Drainage schemes threatened wetlands, while fertilisers and pesticides reduced water quality.
At the same time, the popularity of boating holidays surged. The introduction of motor cruisers in the 1930s and the expansion of hire fleets after the Second World War made the Broads a destination for middle-class families. By the 1950s and 1960s, the rivers were alive with holidaymakers.
This popularity, however, placed pressure on the fragile ecosystem. Pollution, overcrowding, and habitat loss threatened the unique wildlife of the Broads. Campaigners and conservationists began to call for greater protection.
In 1989, the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads Act established the Broads Authority, a statutory body tasked with balancing navigation, conservation, and public enjoyment. The Act recognised the Broads as having equivalent status to a national park, though with additional responsibilities for maintaining waterways. This moment marked the formal recognition of the Broads as a landscape of both national and international importance.
A Haven for Wildlife
One of the most remarkable aspects of the Broads’ history is how nature has reclaimed and enriched the landscape created by medieval industry. Today, the Broads are a haven for biodiversity, hosting rare species of plants, birds, and insects.
The shallow waters and reed beds provide breeding grounds for bitterns, marsh harriers, and bearded tits. The swallowtail butterfly, Britain’s largest and rarest butterfly, is found almost exclusively in the Broads. Otters, once threatened by habitat loss and pollution, have made a successful return. The network of rivers and dykes supports fish populations and aquatic plants unique to the region.
Conservation organisations and local communities have played a vital role in sustaining this richness. Traditional practices such as reed cutting for thatch and grazing by cattle help maintain habitats. Nature reserves, including Hickling Broad, Ranworth Broad, and Strumpshaw Fen, demonstrate how careful management can preserve biodiversity while welcoming visitors.
Culture, Identity, and the Broads Today
The Broads are not only a natural landscape but also a cultural one. The wherry remains an enduring symbol, with a small number of historic vessels preserved and still sailing. Local traditions of boat building, reed cutting, and farming continue, often passed down through generations. Yes, absolutely. If you’ve hired a self-drive day boat, you’re free to moor up along the riverbank at designated spots or outside many riverside pubs and attractions. Whether it’s for a picnic, a stroll around a nearby village, or a spot of lunch, stopping off is all part of the experience.
Do I need to book in advance?
That depends on the type of trip or boat you’re planning to enjoy. Standard day boats are usually available on a first-come, first-served basis, though you can pre-book if you're planning a longer outing. For other types of boats, including wheelchair-friendly boats, electric day boats, or our day cruisers with toilets - advance booking is essential as these are in high demand.
If you're planning to join a River Trip, it's strongly recommended that you book in advance, especially during busy times like weekends and school holidays. While we sometimes have availability on the day, securing your spot ahead of time ensures you won’t miss out.

1. What makes Three Rivers Pitch & Paddle unique compared to other boat hire companies in the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads? We have a wild riverside location, which offers a unique retreat just a short walk from two pubs - one accessible by paddling. We have a sauna alongside a floating pontoon for relaxation, riverside yoga sessions and we are dog friendly. Throughout the summer we have food trucks and events weekly to refuel you after a paddle. As a small locally owned business we have local knowledge of the area and our site is stocked with fresh, locally sourced produce.
2. For someone visiting the Broads for the first time, what kind of experience can they expect when hiring from you? Knowledgable, helpful team members launching directly onto the peaceful River Waveney, surrounded by wildlife, unlike busier parts of the Broads, Three Rivers gives you access to quiet routes, ideal for spotting kingfishers and herons. You can choose to stay overnight, either on one of our pitches or in one of our beautiful rooms with stunning views.
3. Can you tell us about some of your most popular routes or destinations, and what makes them special? One of our most popular destinations is the scenic 20-30 minute paddle to the Locks Inn, a community owned pub located on the banks of the River Waveney. They host live music and many events, you can get a drink and bite to eat and sit in the sun or even walk across the bridge to see the sunset over the river.
4. You offer quite a variety of craft—from paddleboards to canoes. How do you help customers choose the right one for their day out? We make it easy for our customers to choose the right craft by offering advice based on their plans for the day and their experience on the water. Whether they’re a first timer or an experienced paddler we guide them to their best option based on their confidence, group size and they kind of day they are after. We take into account the route they want to explore and how long they’ll be out for, ensuring comfort and suitability for their day out. We give a clear safety briefing and answer any questions, so they feel prepared and enjoy their time on the Norfolk Broads.
5. Are there any exciting new additions or plans for Three Rivers Pitch & Paddle in the coming season? We have just opened a self-catered holiday let: Kingfisher's Retreat for a family of four in addition to our rooms. We have more events happening this summer. One of them being a Paddle and Pairing night, where you can enjoy a paddle, pizza, H&J chocolate desserts and Chet Valley wine tasting. Another event we have the summeris Pizza, Paddle and Fizz, where you go for a paddle and then come back for a pizza and prosecco. We also have our drop and go children’s activity sessions this summer where you drop your child off for a couple hours and they do fun, creative, outdoor activities.

For many, the idea of a boating holiday on the Norfolk Broads conjures up images of tranquil waters, sweeping skies and perhaps just a touch of apprehension, especially if it’s your first time on the water. But for Sara Thwaites, whose family has run Barnes Brinkcraft in Wroxham for generations, that nervous energy quickly turns into joy once guests get the hang of things.
“You find your spot and go for it,” she says with a smile. “Even I look cool doing it.”
That effortless charm and can-do attitude are part of what makes Barnes Brinkcraft so unique. Beyond their well-known fleet of cruisers and day boats, the company has spent years perfecting the holiday experience, especially for those new to boating.
“We suggest mooring at Salhouse Broad on your first night,” Sara explains. “There’s always someone there to help with mooring lines. It takes the worry out of it, and honestly, it’s quite good fun. Getting it a bit wrong is part of learning.”
And learn guests do, often discovering skills they never knew they had. “You come away having developed a whole new skill set. That’s part of the adventure.”
Of course, it’s not just about ease of use. Sustainability is woven into everything Barnes Brinkcraft does. “For years, we’ve designed our hulls for low wash, and all our engines are limited to 7 mph, which not only protects wildlife and riverbanks but still gives us the power needed to navigate tidal spots like Breydon Water.”

Unlike older practices in the boating world, Barnes Brinkcraft’s fleet does not discharge sewage into the water. “All our boats are pumpout only,” Sara notes proudly. And the company continues to push the envelope: new builds are equipped with lithium batteries, solar panels, and shore power connectivity, allowing guests to enjoy silent cruising and reduced carbon footprints.
“We’ve also got solar panels on every shed we can fit them on. The newer electric day boats are practically silent, it’s peaceful, better for the environment, and the wildlife seems to love it too.”
Even off the water, their eco-consciousness shows. Holiday homes are heavily insulated, older boats are refurbished rather than scrapped, and recycling facilities are clearly marked around the yard. “We call some of our older models ‘no-frills’, but they’ve been refitted with new upholstery and engines and are of brilliant value. Some have been with us for over 40 years.”
Not everyone’s a natural sailor, and Barnes Brinkcraft has catered to that too. Their Riverside holiday cottages, converted from old boat sheds, offer all the charm of a Broads break without the need to set foot on a deck.
“My best mate can’t stand on a pontoon without feeling seasick,” laughs Sara. “Now she can still be in her favourite place and just enjoy the view.”
The cottages are particularly popular with families and older guests who want river access and dayboat hire without the responsibility of skippering a cruiser for days on end. “It’s a way for people to be part of the action without giving up comfort, or stability!”
Plus, with train and bus links right to their doorstep, even those without a car can plan a full Broads getaway.

“We’ve got QR codes in every boat and cottage for direct reviews,” Sara says. “But more than that, we talk to people, really listen. And we test everything ourselves.”

There’s plenty more on the horizon. A new boat design is in the works (though it’s still under wraps), and their popular Barnes Brinkcraft app is getting an upgrade.
“At the moment, the app helps you find moorings and pubs nearby, but we want to develop it further, so it can tell you when your boat’s ready, or even help you park right next to it.”
