SCALING EXCELLENCE THROUGH INNOVATION AND QUALITY

As global retail evolves, so too does the demand for efficiency, consistency, and quality in food production. Nowhere is this more evident than in the rapid rise of in-store bakeries— an area where frozen bake-off solutions are transforming the economics of fresh bread.

At the forefront of this shift is La Lorraine Bakery Group (LLBG), a family-owned business with over 80 years of heritage. From its origins as a flour mill in Ghent to becoming a leading international supplier of frozen bakery products, the company has continuously adapted to meet changing market dynamics.

Speaking to Business Enquirer, Razvan Bosomoiu, Managing Director of LLBG Romania, shares insight into the strategy, innovation, and operational excellence that have driven the company’s success in Eastern Europe.

From Heritage to High-Performance Production

LLBG’s journey into frozen bakery products began as a strategic response to inefficiencies in the fresh bread market.

“Wastage in fresh bread can reach up to 40 per cent,” Bosomoiu explains. “Frozen bake-off products allow retailers to maintain freshness while dramatically reducing waste and operational complexity.”

This model—part-baked goods finished in-store—creates a compelling value proposition:

• Lower waste

• Reduced labour requirements

• Consistent product quality

• Greater flexibility for retailers

It’s a formula that has proven scalable across markets.

Romania: A Strategic Growth Engine

In 2011, LLBG identified Romania as a high-potential market and entered via a joint venture with Macromex, a key player in frozen and chilled distribution.

“Romania stood out due to its size and growth potential within Southeast Europe,” Bosomoiu notes. “Equally important was our partnership with Macromex, which gave us immediate logistical strength.”

Together, the partners established the country’s first ultra-modern frozen bread facility in Campia Turzii—a move that combined strategic location advantages with strong local support.

What began as a single production line rapidly evolved into a multi-line, highcapacity operation, with continuous investment underpinning growth. Today, the facility produces tens of thousands of tonnes annually and continues to expand.

Operational Excellence Through Technology

A defining feature of LLBG’s Romanian operation is its commitment to cuttingedge technology.

From automated production lines to advanced pastry systems, every aspect of the facility is designed for efficiency and scalability. Recent investments include high-capacity lines incorporating technologies used in only a handful of global facilities.

This focus enables LLBG to deliver on two critical pillars:

• High-volume production

• Consistent premium quality

A Diverse and Adaptive Product Portfolio

Flexibility remains one of LLBG’s strongest competitive advantages.

“Our range spans baguettes, rolls, speciality breads, pastries, and desserts,” says Bosomoiu. “But just as important as variety is our ability to adapt to regional preferences.”

For example:

• Western Europe leans towards sweet pastries

• Eastern Europe shows stronger demand for savoury options

This market snsitivity has allowed LLBG to tailor its offering effectively across geographies, supporting both domestic growth and exports.

Exporting Quality Across Europe

While Romania is a key production hub, LLBG’s reach extends far beyond its borders.

Products from the Campia Turzii facility are exported to multiple markets, including:

• Serbia

• Bulgaria

• Hungary

• Greece

• The UK

• France

This international footprint reinforces LLBG’s position as a trusted supplier to major multinational retailers.

Quality as a Core Differentiator

For LLBG, quality is not just a benchmark— it’s a strategic priority.

The company operates under the rigorous IFS (International Food Standard), ensuring compliance with some of the most demanding food safety and quality requirements globally.

“We don’t just focus on our own processes,” Bosomoiu emphasises. “We apply strict standards across our entire supply chain— from raw materials to packaging.”

This end-to-end approach ensures consistency, reliability, and trust across all markets.

Responding to Market Evolution

Consumer behaviour in Romania is shifting—and LLBG is capitalising on the trend.

“Consumers are increasingly prioritising quality over quantity,” Bosomoiu explains. “Even as overall bread volumes decline slightly, market value is rising, reflecting a move towards premium products.”

This aligns perfectly with LLBG’s positioning as a producer of high-quality, value-added bakery goods.

Navigating Challenges with Agility

Like many manufacturers, LLBG faces challenges—most notably labour shortages.

To address this, the company has:

• Invested heavily in training and development

• Expanded recruitment beyond local markets

• Built a skilled workforce capable of operating advanced production systems

“Our industry is highly specialised,” Bosomoiu notes. “Developing talent internally is essential.”

Investing in the Future

Looking ahead, LLBG remains firmly focused on growth through innovation and capacity expansion.

Key priorities include:

• Increasing production capacity

• Entering new international markets

• Expanding into artisanal and healthfocused product lines

“We are closely monitoring consumer trends,” Bosomoiu concludes. “The future lies in high-quality, natural, and balanced products—and we are investing to lead in that space.”

A Recipe for Sustainable Growth

With a strong heritage, strategic partnerships, and a relentless focus on quality and innovation, La Lorraine Bakery Group has built a resilient and scalable business model.

As the global bakery sector continues to evolve, LLBG’s ability to combine tradition with technology positions it firmly at the forefront of the industry—delivering, quite simply, nothing but the best.
