TheBurnabyBluesandRootsFestivalranks atthetopinthisyear’sBestofBurnaby competition,withcityvotersgivingitfirst placeintheOutdoorConcertoftheYear category.
Thefestivalhasbeenbringingoutdoor entertainmenttothecitythroughout its22-yearhistory.TheCityofBurnaby saysthefestivalexiststocelebratethe influenceorrootsandbluesinaunique venuewhileencouragingcultural awarenessofmusicaltalent,providinga platformforlocalandCanadianartistsand ensuringthatfemaleandBIPOCartistsare represented.
Thefirstfestivalin2000sawheadliners DeborahColeman,RobertCray,Billy BranchandtheSonsofBlues,JimByrnes andtheFrankieLeeShow.
In2013,thefestivallineupexpandedfrom
eightperformersthepreviousyearand saw12headlinersscheduledincludingBlue Rodeo,CharlesBradley,ZZWard,Shakura S’Aida,NdidiOnukwulu,DavidGogo,Jon andRoy,TheSojourners,JohnLeeSanders, VinceVaccaro,BrickhouseandShaun Verreault.
Tomark20years,2019sawamajor headliner:FeistaswellasLordHuron, DanMangan,TheWarandTreaty,William PrinceandSouthernAvenue.
Unfortunately,thepopularoutdoor concerteventwascancelledin2020due tothecontinuingCOVID-19pandemic. Acitypressreleasenotedthedecisionto canceltheeventwasbasedonguidance fromtheprovincialhealthofficer regardinglargeevents.Theeventwasalso skippedin2021beforemakingitsreturn in2022.
Lastyear’sevent featuredTheWar onDrugs,Kathleen Edwards,The SoulRebels,Ruby Waters,Balkan Shamlkanand RobertConnely Farr.
Thefestivalis scheduledto returnthisyearon Aug.12.Whilethe lineuphasn’tbeen announcedasofyet, thebiggestnews forthisyearisthat admissionwillbe completelyfree. Lastyear’s admissionprices rangedfrom$40 forearly-birdtickets,to$50foradvanced tickets,to$60forday-of-showtickets, whilechildrenaged12andunderwere free.“TheBurnabyBluesandRootsFestival isoneofthemostexcitingeventsthatwe hostinBurnaby,”Burnaby’sMayorMike HurleysaidinFebruary.

ThisisBurnaby’sbestannualfestival— HatsOff Day.
Thegrassrootsfestival,votedperennial winnerofourBestofBurnabycontest intheAnnualBurnabyFestivalcategory, returnsforyetanotherexcitingyearthis summer.
OnJune3,2023,theBurnabystreetwillbe closeddownforthemassivestreetfestival, wherepedestrianscanmingleandhave fun.
HatsOff Dayhasbeenalongstanding traditioninthecity.Everysummersince theearly1980s,folkshavegathered
aroundtocelebratetheBurnabyHeights community.
Inits40-plusyears,HatsOff Dayhas grownfromasmallsidewalkeventtoa day-longcelebrationthatpullsallthestops withafamilyrace,avintagecarshow,a main-street-stylecolourfulparadeanda full-onstreetfestival.
OrganizedbytheHeightsMerchant Association,thefreefestivalstartedas awayforbusinessownersintheNorth Burnabyareatopaytributetotheir community,andhassincegrowntobeone ofthebiggeststreetfestivalsintheregion. Eachyear,theorganizersplanadifferent paradetheme.Previousyearshaveseen superheroesandTarzanandJanemaking appearances.
Thefestivalthisyearwillkickoff withthe 550-metreFamilyFunDashkidsrace, celebratinghealthandwellnessandfunin Burnaby.Therace,startingat9:30a.m.,is afundraiserfortheBurnabyFirefighters
Charitable Society,and willbepriced at$5perchild participant. Therestofthe festivalisfree toattend.The paradewillbegin at9:45a.m. withtheparade preludeofthe MotorcycleDrill Teamfollowedby thefullparadeat 10a.m.
By10:30a.m.,the streetwillshut downtotraffic completely. Thereisalso aShow&Shine vintagecarshow wherecarbuffscanmarvelatclassic andcustom-madevehicles,trucks,and motorcycles.Thefulleventlistwillbe postedonwww.hatsoffday.cainmid-May, sostaytuned.

theisolationthatis sometimesexperienced livinginasuburban setting,wewanted tomake(theoriginal SouthBurnaby NeighbourhoodHouse) aplacewherepeople couldcometogatheror sitandhavecoffeejust tomeetneighbours.”
Theideahearkensback totheNeighbourhood Housemovementin 19thCenturyEngland, whenruralresidents migratedtocitiesin searchofworkand immigrantsarrived fromcontinental Europe,leavingtheir communitiesbehind.
Theneighbourhoodhousemovement recognizedaneedforsuchthingsas publicrecreationprograms,daynurseries forworkingparents(thecity’sfirst)and Englishlanguageandadultliteracyclasses. NeighbourhoodHouseshavebeen operatinginMetroVancouverfor morethan100years,andBurnaby NeighbourhoodHousecontinuesits
traditionofcommunityconnectionand supportinever-evolvingways.
