Housing activists and tenants will march through Metrotown this weekend to protest demovictions in Burnaby. Some 100 people are expected at Saturday’s rally organized by Stop Demovictions Burnaby. Organizers are calling for a stop to all evictions in Burnaby, including those due to renovations or demolitions, and evictions for cause and failure to pay rent. Housing activists and experts have been

calling for reforms to the Metrotown downtown plan, which includes a mass rezoning of the area, resulting in many purpose-built apartments from the ’60s and ’70s being torn down and replaced with highrise luxury condominiums. Zoe Luba of Stop Demovictions Burnaby estimates 700 units have been demolished in Metrotown since 2011 and says another 500 have been slated for demolition since the plan was adopted in July 2017. “All evictions – no matter if it’s a renoviction or a demoviction or an eviction for fail-

A young woman with a ukulele has broken Byrne Creek Secondary School’s two-year grip on the top prize at the annual districtwide Burnaby’s Got Talent student talent show Monday.

Singer-songwriter Haleluya Hailu of Burnaby North Secondary launched herself into the final four of the competition at the Michael J. Fox Theatre singing a brisk, sardonic number of her own creation called Choke while accompanying herself on the ukulele. Hailu was up against 15

other competitors (the contest features two acts from each of Burnaby’s eight high schools), including singers, dancers and even a dog trainer, Hannah Kinnie with her pup Lucy. A panel of judges then picked Hailu, Alpha Secondary singing group Darkness (Annika Guy, Pan-

iz Najjar, Mina Garlick and MahonYousefi), Burnaby Central’s Isabella Troche and Moriah Jacaruso (a singing duo) and Patrick Zhu and Andrew Lee (violin with piano) to give an encore performance in the second half of the contest. The audience then crowned Hailu after she

performed a second original piece called The Feeling with no Name. The competition – organized every year by the Burnaby District Student Advisory Council (DSAC) – drew an audience of about 500 and raised at least $3,000 for the Burnaby Centre for Mental Health

and Addiction. “We have been working extremely hard to put on the event, and we are beyond excited to see how the funds will be used to better our community,” DSAC president Melissa Wang told the NOW in an emailed statement.

B.C.’s police watchdog is apologizing for taking more than three years to report on two police shootings in Burnaby in March 2015 but says it will do better in the future thanks to more resources, improved organizational efficiency and an improved office culture. The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO)

was called to Burnaby three times in March 2015 for officer-involved shootings. Two of those incidents, on March 1 and March 20, are now the oldest cases on the police watchdog’s books. “Both of these investigations have been underway for over three years, and the protracted nature of these cases is unacceptable,” Deputy Commissioner Brenda Butterworth-Carr, the RCMP’s commanding of-

ficer in B.C., told the NOW in an emailed statement. “The years of uncertainty for our police officers raises numerous concerns.While we continue to support independent oversight, in order to ensure that public and police trust and confidence is maintained, this oversight needs to occur in a timely and professional manner.” On March 1, 2015, Burnaby RCMP officers were

on patrol when they came across an alleged robbery in progress at the 7-Eleven at Canada Way and Edmonds Street.The officers tried to arrest two male suspects, but the men fled in a vehicle, ramming a police vehicle, according to an RCMP press release at the time. Shots were fired, and the suspects drove off. Police found the suspect vehicle after it crashed near Canada Way and Rosewood

Avenue. One of the suspects was found nearby suffering from a serious injury, possibly caused by a gunshot. On March 20, at about 8 p.m., officers responded to calls of a man with a gun in the 9300 block of Salish Court. He was located and reportedly was in distress, threatening himself and then the officers, according to an IIO press release at

the time. Officers fired their weapons and the man sustained a gunshot injury. When asked why it’s taken the police watchdog more than three years to close the cases, Ron MacDonald, the chief civilian director of the IIO, said it’s difficult to pinpoint reasons for specific cases but that a general backlog of files had built up because the office, Continued on page 8

An animal rights group is asking residents not to use animal traps after a raccoon chewed off his paw after being caught in a trap in Burnaby. The raccoon was found dragging himself in a cuffstyle trap attached to his paw by residents near Norland Avenue. Langley-based Critter Care Wildlife Society responded and removed the trap to find his paw crushed, and staff and volunteers ad-

ministered pain medication. The animal was scheduled to get X-rays the following morning, but he chewed off his foot overnight and, as a result, had to be euthanized. The animal rights group says the death could have been avoided. “An innocent animal suffered deeply because of a single trap in the Burnaby community.There is no need for that,” Adrian Nelson of the Fur-Bearers said in a release. The group recommends contacting companies rec-

ommended by B.C. SPCA’s AnimalKind pest control program to deal with concerns of unwanted wildlife. “Residents need to know that traps like this cause suffering and don’t resolve conflicts with wildlife,” Nelson said. “Companies who can safely and humanely remove wildlife from properties do exist. Living with wildlife and preventing conflict is possible without the use of inherently inhumane traps.”

vehicle, failure to stop at the scene of an accident and obstruction of a police officer. “Our officers showed incredible courage as a large SUV was allegedly driven towards them, striking their police vehicles and pinning one of the officers between vehicles,” Burnaby RCMP Supt. Chuck McDonald stated in a press release. “This is a prime example of the risks that our members take on a daily basis to keep our city safe, and I am proud of the hard work done by our prolific offender suppression team to ensure the accused is facing serious charges in relation to this incident.” The woman in the vehicle is not facing any related charges.

A 20-year-old man who allegedly bashed his way through three police cars and three civilian vehicles in a stolen Nissan Murano to escape from a Metrotown parking lot two weeks ago now faces eight charges, including assault of a police officer. On April 5, following leads on a suspected stolen vehicle, members of Burnaby RCMP’s prolific offender suppression team tracked a man and woman to a Nissan Murano in a parking lot at Metrotown at about 1:30 p.m., according to police. Officers used their police vehicles to block in the suspect SUV and arrest the

man and woman, but the male driver allegedly used the vehicle to bash his way out, damaging three police vehicles and three parked cars.Three officers suffered minor bumps and bruises during the incident, but no civilians were hurt. Shortly after the incident, police recovered the stolen vehicle on Dickens Place in Burnaby. A suspect, 20-year-old Antonio Tahvili, was arrested by Coquitlam RCMP a day later on an outstanding, unrelated warrant. He has now been charged with eight offences related to the Metrotown incident, including assault of a police officer, possession of property obtained by crime, dangerous operation of a motor

So today, we’re taking some time out from pipelines and demovictions to take our hats off to the talented teens of Burnaby who strutted their stuff on the Michael J. Fox Theatre stage on Monday night. Top acts from each of

Burnaby’s eight high schools competed in the annual Burnaby’s Got Talent event, with Burnaby North Secondary’s Haleluya Hailu (pictured on today’s front cover) earning the title for her singer-songwriter efforts. As always, the students displayed an array of musical and dance talent – and even dog-training talent, thanks to Hannah Kinnie and her canine companion, Lucy.

Now more than ever … this planet needs artists as it has never needed them before. But it’s not just their level of talent that’s impressive. What really makes these teens shine is their willingness to follow their passion and to chart their own individual path in life.Wheth-

er that path has led them to dance, to pick up a violin or to bare their souls in song, these teens have figured out the importance of being true to themselves. And they’ve figured out,

too, that the world would be a poorer place without art. Now more than ever – in the midst of war, poverty, environmental destruction and political turmoil – this planet needs artists as it has never needed them before. It needs performers like Haleluya and all of her peers to do what it is that artists do best: to make us laugh and cry and think, to help us find meaning, to call us to action and, most of all, to

tap into the best of each of us and to bring us together in shared humanity. That’s why we extend our thanks to each and every one of the 16 acts who got up on that stage on Monday night and shared a part of themselves with us. Whatever comes of all the challenges and crises in our world, we feel hopeful knowing this planet’s future is in the hands of young people like you.

Use public funds for good, not evil Dear Editor: I am outraged that Prime Minister Trudeau wants to throw billions of public dollars, taxpayers’ money, at the Texas oil company, Kinder Morgan, in order to ensure the TransMountain pipeline expansion gets built, with tar sands production increasing to fill it. In a way, as Naomi Klein said, it is heartening to see our leaders can act quickly in times of crisis; with emergency summits, press conferences, and billions on the table. They are doing this, however, to bail out the richest, most powerful and polluting industry in history instead of using this action and money to address the very real crisis of climate change, inequality and racism in our country. Any investment of taxpayers’ money in energy and infrastructure at this time should finance a rapid transition into renewable energy sources like geothermal, solar and wind power and the training that workers will need to work in these resource industries. Money for Indigenousowned and controlled renewable clean energy projects will provide ongoing jobs for Indigenous people; money for other Canadian renewable energy projects throughout the country will provide jobs from Newfoundland to B.C.; money for increasing affordable public transit throughout Canada will reduce the need for oil and provide jobs. In addition, the money Trudeau wants to make available to Kinder Morgan can be invested in low-carbon jobs like teaching, child care and elder care. There are many, many better uses to be made with this public money which would reduce our reliance on fossil fuel and provide jobs throughout the country rather than funding/bribing Kinder Morgan

I find it ironic that the mayor vehemently opposes a pipeline in Burnaby, yet thinks it is OK to raze buildings to the ground. Canadians have, however, become sadly aware over the years how special interest groups (both “pro” and “against”) have become a cancer to our democracy. These groups have become experts at subjugating our ailing medias, academias, governments, politics and judiciaries on tricky matters such as “are Canadians prepared to invest further in fossil fuel as required on the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion build?” This is clearly a national issue if not a broader one, certainly not a B.C.- or an Alberta-only matter. So could a Canada-wide citizen referendum be conducted asking the basic question without the cancer of special interests killing what is left of our ailing democracy? Lettersnow Expanded pipeline is safer than more train cars Dear Editor: The existing Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipeline, built in 1953, can no longer meet the needs of its customers, and one of its largest customers is our local North Burnaby oil refinery. This provides the Lower Mainland with about one-third of its motor fuel, and because the refinery cannot get enough crude oil feedstock by pipeline, it gets it by rail. Many Burnaby residents will have noticed trains of 100-plus cars continually rumbling along the flats past Burnaby Lake, many of those carrying crude oil from Alberta. Four years ago, one of those trains derailed putting seven cars off the track beside Winston Street at the east end of Burnaby Lake. Fortunately, they were carrying coal not oil and, referring to Lac-Mégantic, the fact that pipelines are safer than rail tankers has been demonstrated in the most terrifying way possible. I am a Burnaby resident. I consider myself an environmentalist and I drive a zero-emission electric car, but I also understand risk mitigation. Further, this is the only pipeline in North America that can carry a variety of products: diluted bitumen, crude oil of various grades, diesel fuel, gasoline, etc. (not mixed, but one after the other). That’s Canadian oil, refined in Canada and sold in Canadian dollars. If this pipeline expansion is cancelled, we won’t run out of gas; we’ll just get more from the BP refinery at Cherry Point in Washington State. Look on the map, it’s immediately east of Saturna Island and receives Alaskan crude shipped

through Juan De Fuca Strait, past Victoria and around the Gulf Islands. If objectors to the pipeline are concerned about oil tankers in Georgia Straight, they’ve already missed the boat. With more Alaskan oil refined in the U.S. and sold to us in U.S. dollars, we’ll likely see $2-perlitre gasoline soon. Perhaps this will provide a greater incentive for people to buy electric cars, and wouldn’t that be a good thing? James Mason, Burnaby

Dear Editor: The mayor and his BCA council’s

defence of their massive demovictions in recent years is getting more and more ridiculous. Bizarrely, Mayor Corrigan noted that owners of older buildings in Metrotown will find holding onto them difficult as their taxes increase with the value of land. Of course they are, because the mayor and his councillors have created a speculative frenzy in Burnaby’s Metrotown area. In 2003 investors in rental properties could buy rental units for around $70,000 per unit in both New West and Burnaby. According to the Goodman report, the going rate in New West is about $288,000 while Burnaby jumped to $551,000 per suite on average. If you look at the Metrotown area, three apartments recently sold for over $1 million per suite. This is due to Corrigan and his council’s bending over backwards to please developers and passing the Metrotown plan update, which opens up the entire Metrotown area to rezoning for luxury highrises. The B.C. government will file a reference case in the B.C. Court of Appeal by April 30 in connection with the province’s ongoing battle over the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project. The reference will go to the B.C. Court of Appeal, asking the court to weigh in on the province’s constitutional rights surrounding risks of bitumen spills. Specifics on the reference have not been released.

Premier John Horgan said in February the government was retaining expert counsel to prepare a legal reference and consultation on four bitumen spill safeguards, including spill response time, geographic response plans, compensation for loss of public and cultural use of land, and application of regulations to marine spills. John Arvay was hired to prepare the reference. Attorney General David Eby announced earlier this week the government would also pursue action against

Support rising in B.C. Support for the Kinder Morgan pipeline in British Columbia is rising, according to a new study by the Angus Reid Institute. In February, 48 per cent of B.C. residents surveyed supported the pipeline expansion and 40 per cent opposed, but now support has risen to 54 per cent while opposition is at 38 per cent. British Columbians are divided on overall risks and benefits of the pipeline: 35 per cent say environmental risks outweigh economic benefits, and 35 per cent also say the opposite. The proportion of Canadians who say the B.C. government is wrong to oppose the pipeline has risen by nine points to 64 per cent.

The cherry blossoms are cascading from the trees and green buds are rising from the earth.When it comes to seasons, spring certainly puts on a show in Burnaby. The Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre is honouring the bountiful season with a special event this weekend, Celebrate Spring: A Tribute to the Beauty of Japanese Culture. “In Japanese culture there are many traditions that do celebrate the changing of the seasons. Not only spring but all of the seasons have quite significant events and customs that are associated with their symbolism and the changing of seasons,” explained Karah Goshinmon, education coordinator for the centre. “But spring in particular, I think like many cultures, has this sense of renewal, of the new coming lightness.” The family-friendly event will include traditional performances such as taiko drumming and Bon-Odori (folk dancing). The event will also include a tea ceremony, kimono dressing and bonsai and ikebana on display, she added.

“So much of the traditions in Japan, for instance the symbols that they use, the type of flowers that are worn on kimono, the type of utensils that are used in tea ceremony, would all be used reflective of the season,” she said. There will be a marketplace of craft items and Japanese cuisine, a screening of Facing Injustice:The Relocation of Japanese Canadians to Manitoba, and activities for children. “We’ll have some interactive drawing and calligraphy contests for kids and adults,” Goshinmon said. “If weather permits, we’ll have a large kids’ area outside, with a bouncy castle and fun Japanese-themed kids’ crafts as well.” If it rains, the celebration will remain indoors, she added. The centre’s annual fundraiser, Bloom, a silent art auction, is also included in the festivities this year. “This year it’s not going to be a standalone event, it is going to be part of the larger Celebrate Spring event,” Nichola Ogiwara, museum programmer, told the NOW. “It’s different in that Celebrate Spring is a bit more family-oriented. We typically would’ve had around 100 people come to

If adventuring down B.C. rivers or paddling peacefully around local lakes appeals to you, you might want to join Burnaby’s Beaver Canoe Club. Members of the club don’t just stick to neighbouring waterways either – many of them have canoed in Costa Rica, Chile and other parts of the world, according to training director Carey Robson. “If you dream about those sorts of things, we live the dream,” Robson told the NOW. The club is offering people the chance to share in its adventures and journeys, and is providing training this month – but only to those willing to become members. The Basic Paddlers

Kicking off the spring season is Arts Alive 2018 – a collaborative exhibit featuring work by Burnaby secondary school students “showcasing the emerging talent of young, local artists,” notes a press release. “This year’s 36th edition features over 50 artworks from eight schools across the city representing the depth, breadth and extraordinary talents of students in the district.” The exhibition features ceramics, paintings, drawings, tone works, sculptures and photography. Arts Alive 2018 runs April 20 to June 3 in the lower gallery at the Burnaby Art Gallery. Also starting April 20 is David Ostrem:Why Won’t You Be Art? BCIT student Gayle Eldridge and instructor Mike Deck inspect a prosthetic leg of the kind Eldridge would learn to make in her 1983 prosthetics course, one of only two of its kind in Canada. BCIT had put out a call in the Nov. 28 issue of the NOW for amputees willing to volunteer with the program, where students learned to make all kinds of artificial limbs, studying everything from anatomy, biophysics and pathology to shoemaking. They also learned to work with plaster, plastics, leather, glue and steel, shaping, moulding, sanding, sewing, drilling, baking and bending the materials to work with the human body.

Shredathon raises funds for Charlford House Janaya Fuller-Evans

Addiction is a major issue these days, with many people wondering how they can help loved ones, friends and acquaintances. One option is to come out to Charlford House Society forWomen’s shredathon fundraiser. The money raised goes towards the general operations of the recovery house, according to executive director MirandaVecchio. “It allows us to continue operating,” she said, explaining the funds cover groceries, utilities and other costs. Anything left over helps the women staying at the house take part in recovery-based events. The third annual shredathon takes place on Saturday, April 21 at Lochdale Community School, 6990 Aubrey St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Urban Impact is donating the use of a mobile shredder, and staff – along with staff fromVancity – will be helping people unload. “No load is too big or too small,”Vecchio said. The fundraiser also includes a barbecue, so those who bring their personal papers for shredding can grab a bite to eat. Safeway at Kensington Plaza is supplying the barbecue fixings. The society hopes to raise $2,500 at the event. The 15-bed recovery house, which has been based in Burnaby since 1970, is the only licensed facility for women in the city, according toVecchio. The Charlford House Society runs a 90-day 12step abstinence program and mostly treats women from the Lower Mainland, though it will treat women from anywhere, she added. There is never a shortage of women to fill spots, ac-

cording toVecchio, though the age range has changed over the past three years. “What we’ve seen is our demographic has shifted,” she said, noting it’s now mostly women between the ages of 19 and 26. The recovery house is holding another fundraiser in June, with its two-day garage sale, and will be accepting donations for that soon, Vecchio said. And, of course, monetary donations are always welcome. But the best way to support the women of Charlford House is by speaking out, she said. “They can help by being courageous enough to talk about addiction,”Vecchio explained. “The more we try to keep it in the dark, the worse the problem gets.” Ending the stigma around addiction is the best way to help those struggling with it, she said. bby

Youthful Vikings set sights on banner Teams By Dan Olson

With a roster filled heavily with Grade 10s, 9s and even 8s, the Burnaby North Vikings are still reliant on others to get to the game. Only a handful are eligible to apply for a driver’s licence. But once there, the Vikings senior girls soccer players are showing they can put the pedal to the metal. With a 2-1-1 record midway through the Burnaby-New West senior girls season, Burnaby North is in the thick of it – “it” being a shot of advancing to a league final. Tuesday’s solid 3-1 victory over

the Moscrop Panthers was more evidence that, while the team has a lot of growing to do, it has the potential to be among the last standing come playoff time. “Originally, I called this a building season,” Burnaby North coach Deb Peters said. “But I think with the way they’ve come together I think we have a good chance to make the (league) banner final.” The win over Moscrop was more evidence for that hope. Despite a rash of injuries, that includes missing both their striker and starting goalkeeper to a broken foot and a concussion, respectfully, the club kept rolling. Caught in a 1-0 hole

early after some nice work by the visiting Panthers, the Vikings counted three goals in the second half to lock up their second decision. Leading the way was Grade 9 centre-mid Marica Miljanovic, a second-year senior player who scored all three goals, thanks to a lot of diligent work from her teammates. Grade 8 netminder Sonya Zong was a steadying force as the squad shook off the first goal. “She was a little nervous at the start but she settled down and helped the rest of the team to settle down, too,” noted Peters. Burnaby North’s previous win

came in the first league game, a 5-0 shutout over Burnaby Mountain earlier this month. Coupled with a solid showing at a UBC invitational high school tournament, where they went 2-2 with victories over North Delta and league rival Alpha, Peters said some positive seeds were planted as to what they could achieve. “I was like, ‘Wow.We have some real potential coming together here.’ It was a pleasant surprise.” The Vikings have the experience of playing in last year’s provincial championships to supply motivation and experience. Their next test is Thursday, 3:30 at Burnaby Lake West vs. Alpha.

“It’s been a long time coming,” said Terry Bingley. Bingley, who was referring to the induction of his former senior men’s team into the B.C. Hockey Hall of Fame, has been trying to get the 1980 Burnaby Lakers enshrined for a while. After applying for three straight years, the club will be inducted on July 20 at the South Okanagan Events Centre in Penticton. “I guess we just finally got it right this year,” said the one-time Burnaby netminder. In 1980, the Lakers did the improbable – winning the Canadian intermediate ‘A’ hockey championship against the Fredericton Capitals.The Capitals were coached by former NHL 50-goal man Danny Grant, but that didn’t stop Burnaby from rolling three straight over the Maritimers at Vancouver’s Pacific Coliseum to claim the Hardy Cup. From 1967 to ’84, the Hardy hardware was the national prize for intermediate A hockey. It was reclassified as the AA senior men’s trophy in 1985 before being retired in 1990. Burnaby was the last team from B.C. to win it. The Lakers are the only Lower Mainland team to win the Hardy Cup and

have been inducted into the Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame.Their win is also noted at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, where all winners of the Hardy Cup are listed. “It’s great, like I said the frustrating thing was they have a hall of champions in Toronto at the Hockey Hall of Fame, which every Canadian champion is in there. ...We were in there, but we were never in the B.C. Hockey Hall of Fame, so it’s nice to get inducted and get recognized,” said Bingley. Now a retired Burnaby firefighter, Bingley never stopped playing hockey and still plays with former Lakers player and North Vancouver native Keith Tindle. Bingley says that team had the best chemistry of any he’s ever been on. He described it as a big family with a special bond. “You always hear about team sports and getting the right mix, well we had the right mix,” he said. A right winger for the Lakers, Derek Williams said playing for the team was one of the best years of his life. “I’ve played on a lot of teams and that was the rare team where skill and heart and comradery, you know, all came together,” said Williams, who is now a financial advisor. “Only the real good teams have chemistry, and you know most people

never played on a championship team because they never found the chemistry.” Competing in a North Shore intermediate league, the squad came together after going through some early season challenges. Although it sounds like a flawless route to the national championships, Bingley recalled the team’s first game as a turning point for the Lakers.

“Our first game in Vernon we got blown out 6-0, the other team just thought ‘Oh these guys aren’t so good.’ It really knocked us,” he said. The yellow cards will be at the ready as the provincial adult soccer playoffs enter crunch time this weekend. The local soccer scene has a number of contenders still alive in the sweet-16 section in a variety of divisions, while the EDC Burnaby under-21 men are among the final 12 teams vying for a spot at next month’s finals. EDC, which competes in the Vancouver Metro Soccer League’s u21 league, travels to Vancouver Island to face Cowichan United on Saturday, with the winner advancing to the quarterfinals. The Burnaby squad finished the regular season fourth overall with a 12-2-4 record, four points back of first-place Coquitlam Metro-Ford. Cowichan was the third-best team on the Island this past season. Although no Burnabybased teams remain alive in the men’s Open A division, the Rino’s Tigers of North Van will be hosting Aldergrove United on Sunday, 2 p.m. at Burnaby Lake West. In the Open B division, Sierra FC of the Burnaby Metro Soccer League punched its ticket to the top 16 with a 2-0 victory over Port Moody last week.They now face Gastown FC on Saturday in Point Grey. Also in the running is Impero Calcio, a Burnaby Metro team that had a bye through the opening round. Calicio play the 13th Legion, 5:30 p.m. on Saturday at Burnaby Lake West. In Masters B competition, Burnaby Metro’s Wanderers FC play host to Prospect Lake, 3:30 p.m. at Burnaby Lake West, while local squad Bari FC visits Cordova Bay on Sunday, and Europa FC heads to Richmond.

With a graduating class of six players to salute, the Simon Fraser University men’s field lacrosse team made the most of Friday’s game against the University of Oregon by dashing to a 16-9 win. A pre-game ceremony to honour seniors Troy Boucher, Greg Lunde, Kael Naylor, Matt Sobey, Mackenzie Terrio and Michael Vandenbossche provided ample motivation for the night. While there was little of-

fence in the first half, things unfolded in a big way in the second half. SFU took control with a 9-1 run in the third quarter and fended off a late Oregon rally to improve to 7-2 on the year. Burnaby South secondary alumnus Tyler Kirkby scored three times, including the game’s first goal, but SFU found itself staring at a 3-1 deficit early in the second quarter. Down 5-4 at halftime, the host Clan turned the tables

with a succession of shots, with Naylor tallying five times over the final 30 minutes. Scoring four goals in the second half was Zachary Gould. SFU wraps up the regular season next week with a classic match in Seattle against the Washington Huskies, with the victor claiming the regular season Pacific Northwest Collegiate Lacrosse League title.
