Anti-pipeline protesters who allowed a dog to take a dump in the lobby, left the excrement outside and shared images of the incident on social media showed a lack of respect during a protest at the Burnaby RCMP detachment last

week, according to police. About 30 people descended on the detachment Friday to protest the arrest of fellow pipeline protester Harry Johnson-Larue, who is accused of assaulting a police officer while the officer was trying to arrest another protester for mischief near Kinder Morgan’s Burnaby Mountain terminal on March

25. The group refused to leave, and a number of citizens couldn’t access the detachment as a result, police said. “The Burnaby RCMP detachment also regularly has people who have been victims of crime coming to the detachment to provide statements or information,”

The little boy was born in Iran, but when he was two-and-a-half his parents, afraid of being thrown in jail and limiting their son’s future, fled to Turkey where they were put in refugee purgatory. All they wanted was to find a free and safe country to live in. Finally, Canada, a country they knew next to nothing about, took them in and they ended up in Burnaby when the boy was old enough for kindergarten. At first, it was hard on him because he didn’t know the language, although within a month or so he began to connect with other students.Turns out he’s quite sociable. One day, his class at Forest Grove Elementary went ice skating. Although he struggled to skate, he loved it. He went home and told his parents they’d learned about hockey. “What’s hockey?” they asked. He told them and asked, maybe even pleaded, “Mom, can I play?” NEW HOME ON THE ICE Seyed Hosseindoosttaleshani is one of many young refugee and immigrant converts to Canada’s national obsession playing in the Burnaby Minor Hockey Association (BMHA).They come from countries like Brazil, Lebanon and Iran, where the only ice is found in drinks. Others are from the likes of Korea, China or India. “What I’ve seen is what’s happening in the community is reflective of what’s happening to (the association),” says BMHA executive administrator Larry Hayes. “More people are coming into the community from various countries, with various backgrounds and for various reasons.We are seeing it’s reflective of our registration. “I have heard on numerous occasions, and usually a lot of it’s from those non-traditional hock-

I would say, 98 per cent, if not higher, this is their first experience. “For a lot of them that have come, especially the ones that have come here as refugees or are coming to make a better life or leav-

ing a country where they perhaps don’t have as many freedoms, they’re just embracing it.The reality is that ice sports and hockey are a big part of what the rest of the world sees of Canada.” HOCKEY ‘UNIQUE’ Hosseindoosttaleshani started at Kensington Arena and learned to skate in about six months. His teacher suggested to his parents Hanif and Maryam that they register him for hockey, so they did. “The first time I came to Canada, we didn’t have a TV. Once we got a TV, we started looking at sports and we started watching hockey and all-star games and all that. I just liked how unique it was and how you can win and how big you can grow,” says Hosseindoosttaleshani, who plays goal for the BMHA atom C6 team. “The first time I put on skates it was a really exciting moment that I could be on skates. If my parents didn’t help me get out of (Iran) I wouldn’t be at this level that I am right now.” RED TAPE MOUNTAIN Getting kids like Hosseindoosttaleshani on the ice for a practice, let alone a game, isn’t easy. It’s a long, drawn-out process fraught with red tape.

Any kid not born in Canada who wants to play hockey has to have his or her application go up a mountainous bureaucratic chain, and then back down again, says Hayes, who estimates he’s processed about 30 applications in the past three years. First it goes to the Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association, then to B.C. Hockey and Hockey Canada.The national body then passes it on to the International Ice Hockey Federation. Before the IIHF signs off, it contacts the ice hockey organization in the country in which the player was born. Then it goes back down the chain. The whole process can take many months. “It’s somewhat cumbersome,” says Hayes. “They have to provide documentation, which would include birth certificates, their visas as to the reasons they are here, landed immigrant documents.The majority of them are coming here permanently, but we also get international students that come in and want to play for a year or two while they are here. But that is still a process as well.” Hayes said one girl from Lebanon had to wait for the process to be completed even though her birth country doesn’t have an ice hockey federation.

“Of course, it frustrates people,” says Hayes. “I certainly give them kudos for hanging in there because if they want to play, I tell them, unfortunately, this is a necessary evil. But I soften the blow of having to wait and the fact there is this bureaucracy by telling them each country, especially those that are members of the IIHF, want to keep track of who their naturalborn athletes are. “So it gets a smile from the parents and kids every time I say that, one day, if you’re a good player, you might get a call from the hockey organization in the country you were born asking you if you want to play for them in the Olympics.Which is a reality.That’s certainly one of the reasons each of these countries want to keep track of where their potential Olympic athletes are in the world.” TEAM LIKE FAMILY Hosseindoosttaleshani’s team has kids from many different backgrounds, he says, including Japanese, Chinese and Italian. “Friendship-wise we do get along.The team is like a family to me.You have to trust your teammates. No trust, no gain,” says Hosseindoosttaleshani, already well-versed in hockey-speak.

Burnaby woman injured in March 20 incident Cornelia Naylor

A 28-year-old woman and a 37-year-old man have been charged in connection with a violent bus assault and robbery last month that left a 61-year-old Burnaby woman with a broken arm, cracked sternum and head trauma. According to Metro Vancouver Transit Police, the Burnaby woman boarded a bus at the Surrey Central SkyTrain station on March 20. After she sat down, she got into an altercation with a second woman who said she was saving the seat and who then allegedly used her hip and shoulder to force the Burnaby woman off the seat and onto the floor, according to police. After a man sat down be-

side the second woman, the victim tried to take a photo of them with her phone, but the female suspect allegedly grabbed the phone from her and threw it on the floor. She then allegedly grabbed the victim by the hair and pulled her body over the back of the seat, hitting her head and chest on the metal handrail repeatedly while threatening to kill her, according to police. The husband separated the two women and allegedly grabbed the victim’s phone from another passenger who had picked it up off the floor. The two suspects then got off the bus at King George Boulevard and 88th Avenue. The victim tried to follow them to get her phone back, but the man threw it on the

ground, according to police. After publishing a photo of the pair on March 25, transit police received more than 100 tips from the public. The two suspects have now been identified as Cristina Sasha Ponce and Dylan James Miranda, both of Surrey and both well known to police, according to a transit police press release. Miranda turned himself in to police last week and has been charged with assault, theft and mischief. Ponce turned herself in to transit police on Tuesday and has been charged with robbery, assault causing bodily harm, uttering threats and theft. Ponce was in custody pending a court appearance today (April 6) in Surrey Provincial Court.

Want to ﬁght Big Oil? Here’s a simple start

Today’s fuel prices are a pain in the gas tank. But there doesn’t seem to be a lot we can do about it here in B.C. even as prices hit $1.55 a litre – and they could go even higher. Let’s face it, the cost of crude oil accounts for only about half the price of gas. Our gas woes are the result of a combination of factors, including reduced refinery capability, so, with less fuel getting through, we

face a price squeeze at the pump, and when it’s refined in the U.S., we pay a premium because of the low Canadian dollar. It also costs to deliver gas to the pump, so that has to be factored in, while federal and provincial taxes account for about 30 per cent of the price, or about 50 cents a litre. With the recent 1.2-centper-litre carbon-tax hike added, many people are

fuel taxes and have more refinery capacity. Some people suspect a conspiracy: that Big Oil is punishing B.C. for pipeline protests. The fact is we can do something about these extra dollars being siphoned from our pocketbooks, but it won’t be easy as just about everything we buy has fuel costs embedded. We can drive less or, when driving is a necessi-

ty, purchase smaller cars, take transit more often and change our driving habits by combining trips, accelerating gently, avoiding idling, heavy braking and high speeds (a technique that can cut consumption by 20 per cent). It may sound overly simple, but fighting so-called Big Oil and these inevitable gas price hikes starts with taking personal responsibility on the road.

Sedins’ legacy will live long “They’re one-of-a-kind,” said Victor Hedman, “but, obviously, two guys.” No other quote better encapsulates Daniel and Henrik Sedin, two players that would be utterly unique in the NHL if it weren’t for the inescapable fact that there are two of them, almost exactly alike. There are ways to tell them apart, of course: their heads have a slightly different shape.Their chins are subtly different, though the identical goatees slightly disguise that. Spencer Gillis, son of former Canucks GM Mike Gillis, claimed his father used to tell jokes to the Sedins to make them smile, as the only way he could tell them apart was by their teeth, but Daniel Sedin doesn’t recall Gillis telling them any jokes. On the ice, the only difference between the two is that, when presented with an open net, Daniel actually took the shot instead of passing it to a teammate for an even-more-open net. Nobody plays like the Sedins. Nobody. Other great players get imitated, particularly as we enter an era where young players have hadYouTube at their fingertips their entire lives. Moves which seemed impossible when they first happened – a shot between-the-legs or Pavel Bure’s skate-to-stick move – are now common tools of top young players. Certainly some of the innovations the Sedins brought to the game have become ubiquitous – the classic slap-pass into the slot for a deflection is an example – but no one does it

quite like Henrik and Daniel.The way they cycled the puck and found each other with seemingly impossible passes can’t be replicated. Attribute it to twin-telepathy, to the many years of playing together, or, like Alex Burrows, to dolphin noises, but what they did on the ice will never be seen again. A lot of it came down to hard work. Backing up all of their skill was a dedication to details and an innate toughness and grit that saw them barely miss a game in their careers.What enabled the sheer optimism of their boldest passing plays was a surety that they could win the puck back if they needed to. The Sedins never stopped working.When they lost the puck, they worked tirelessly at getting it back and, more often than not, succeeded. It’s a big reason why their most successful linemates were those who could win puck battles and get the puck back for them, rather than players with good shots.They never needed a sniper; they just needed the puck. They’re about to play their final NHL game, a Saturday night tilt against the Edmonton Oilers on Hockey Night in Canada. As much as the city of Vancouver has had days for the news to sink in, it still doesn’t quite feel real. Perhaps it won’t even feel real until next season’s training camp rolls around and those familiar faces (or face) aren’t there. The Sedins have meant Continued on page 7

Remembering our ‘brave boys’

As the school board prepared to sell the old Burnaby South Secondary School just south of Kingsway by Sperling Avenue to fund the new Burnaby 2000 school on Rumble Street, a resident implored trustees to save a 1948 war memorial there dedicated to 51 students who lost their lives during the SecondWorldWar. Kathleen More was close family friends with two of them (Edwin and Charles Thomas, who were lost during bombing raids over the North Sea). “For many of those brave boys, that cenotaph serves as a last resting place,” she said.

Keep fighting Notley Dear Editor: An open letter to Mayor Derek Corrigan: Even though I am 100 per cent in favour of the Trans Mountain pipeline, I strongly encourage you to fight it all the way. The hypocrisy of Premier Rachel Notley knows no bounds. She talks about creating jobs, but she is personally killing about 75 per cent or more of the coal jobs that would be replaced with the pipeline construction and oil jobs. So there is zero economic benefit to her madness in being phony on camera and attacking you personally. Yes, the late premier Jim Prentice and his Tory cabinet signed the cabinet order-in-council to kill the jobs by shutting the mines. And, yes, she is just carrying out that order. City now It’s Burnaby vs. New West in new walking challenge Burnaby and New Westminster are vying for bragging rights to see who can get the most people walking in the weeks ahead. Political leaders, health representatives, walking advocates and representatives from both cities attended a launch for the WALK30 Burnaby/New West walking challenge on Wednesday at Queen’s Park in New Westminster.The initiative, which runs from April 9 to May 11, is designed to inspire people to walk at least 30 minutes a day to improve their health and help rethink

how people get around in the community. “I just think it’s an easy way to sign on and a nice way to motivate yourself to get out and walk more,” said Margaret Manifold, a senior social planner with the City of Burnaby. “It’s easy to do, it’s affordable.The weather is getting better.The health benefits make you feel better mental and physically.” Burnaby is hoping to get 1,000 citizens and 1,000 students participating in the walking challenge. “I think we are going to get that,” Manifold said. “I

think we have something like 400 students in Burnaby signed up so far, so that’s good.” Organizers hope the challenge will inspire residents of all ages to make more of an effort to walk during their day-to-day lives. Dageraad’s Burnabarian enters new market Cayley Dobie

April showers may delay the start of patio season, but Dageraad Brewing hopes that won’t stop folks from picking up a fourpack of Burnabarian. The four-packs are a new thing for the Burnaby-based brewery.They started canning them about one month ago in hopes of cracking into a new market, according to Dageraad founder Ben Coli. “It’s a little more accessible beer than a lot of the stuff we make because it’s 4.5 per cent alcohol; it’s just really light and delicious and really drinkable, and now we have it in a bit easier package than our big bottles,” he said of the new Burnabarian fourpacks. “It’s an everyday-drinking-beer sort of format. So we’re really excited about that.” The Burnabarian, along with the Blonde, was one of the first beers Dageraad released when it opened in 2014. It’s a beer named after Burnaby, for the people of Burnaby, Coli said. “I’m hoping to get this in front of more people in Burnaby.” A month in, though, and sales could be better, Coli admits. “I would like them to be better. It’s harder to get them into the stores often. Stores tend to have fewer slots for six packs, and they have higher expectations on how many of those six-packs are going to sell,” he said, adding the same philosophy goes for fourpacks of tall cans. Because this is a new venture for the company, Coli said there’s a lot of calculation and guesswork that goes into deciding how much beer to can at a time. Dageraad employs West Coast Canning to do its canning, which saves the business from spending thousands on new equipment, Coli said. So far, they’ve done two canning runs and have produced about 12,000 cans. “It’s always a bit tricky predicting what the demand is going to be for a new product; you just don’t know.You don’t know how much you’re going to sell,” he said. “And it can be really seasonally variable.” Right now Burnabarian four-packs are available at the brewery on Thunderbird Crescent or at Riverway and Burnaby Mountain golf courses.The only liquor store in Burnaby selling Burnabarian is the B.C. liquor store at Northgate.

PHOTO CORNELIA NAYLOR “We’re making inroads, we’re getting it into a few government stores, but it’s been frustrating.The government stores can be a little bit on the conservative side.We’re getting them into more private liquor stores, but, of course, the private stores are all smaller.They don’t do the kind of volume a government store can do,” Coli said. Outside of Burnaby, the four-packs are available at 33 liquor stores (private and government-run) throughout Vancouver, the Tri-Cities and New Westminster. But Coli would still like to see it on more shelves. “With this kind of beer, we’d like to sell a lot of it. If we can get a really good account, that can sell more beer than your worst 20 accounts put together,” he said.
