When the snow lands, so will new rules for keeping sidewalks clear

A large tree branch that crushed a fence and narrowly missed the windows of two Burnaby homes was among several windrelated calls that kept Burnaby firefighters busy during Tuesday night’s windstorm. The fire department was called to 4173 Parker St. at about 11:45 p.m., according to assistant fire Chief Bryan Kirk. The tree-sized branch had split off a large sweet gum tree on city property just before midnight and crashed across two yards on Parker Street by Carleton Avenue. Firefighters had to clear a path to the front door of one of the homes with a chainsaw, but there was minimal damage to either house. The whole tree was cut down by a city contractor the next day. At about the same time as the Parker Street call, firefighters were called to 1970 Duthie Ave., where a large maple had taken out the service lines to the house. While they were there, a neighbour living down the street came over to report a fallen tree had taken out the lines to that home as well. “They got the rescue truck up there with a chain saw. They cut some tree limbs and cleared most of the roadway,” Kirk said. Firefighters defused a bigger threat when they were called to Government Street between Brighton and Dalebright at about 6:15 p.m.

Burnaby business owners who don’t clear their properties of snow this winter could be slapped with a $400 fine. At last week’s meeting, city council increased the original $80 to $400 for industrial and commercial properties, to $250 for multi-family complexes and to $100 for residential homes. The bylaw amendment was part of a larger package of changes to the city’s winter storm response plan. Given the six heavy snowfalls between December 2016 and January 2017, staff were tasked with reviewing the city’s operational procedures to see what improvements could be made. They met with the Burnaby school district,TransLink, Coast Mountain Bus Company, RCMP, Simon Fraser University and the Burnaby Fire Department. They found that the previous $80 fine did not appear to be a “significant deterrent,” according to a report from the city, with the worst offenders being owners of commercial properties.

Whether you’re healthy as a horse or vulnerable to complications, it’s time to get a flu shot, according to Burnaby’s medical health officer. “There’s the thought that, ‘Oh, I don’t get sick, so I don’t need to get a flu shot,’” Dr. Aamir Bharmal told the NOW, “but one of the reasons why we really suggest that people do get the flu shot in those circumstances is because we’re trying to protect the people who are at high risk. By healthy people getting a flu shot, they’re really showing that they’re caring; they’re protecting not only themselves but they’re also protecting their loved ones and others in the community who otherwise are at high risk of complications.” That message came through loud and clear for Burnaby resident Karen Purdy, who got the shot at a Fraser Health flu clinic at the Bonsor 55+ seniors centre last month. She said she was getting the shot so she wouldn’t get the flu, or, if she did, it wouldn’t be so bad. “Plus, you have to consider the herd thing,” she said. “The more of us that can have the flu shot should take it for those who can’t have it.” Groups vulnerable to serious influenza side effects – like pneumonia – include infants, young children, pregnant women, seniors and adults with chronic health conditions or compromised immune systems, according to Bharmal.

Flu shots are publicly funded for those people and for people who live with or are in close contact with them. But Fraser Health recommends everyone over six months old should get the shot. Flu season runs from early October to early spring, and Bharmal said getting a shot early is a good idea. “Usually, it takes a couple of weeks to just develop that protection for influenza, so, by getting it early, you have protection for that whole six- to seven-month period,” he said. Last year’s flu vaccine was about a 40 per cent match with the dominant strain of

influenza making the rounds. Bharmal, who is also Fraser Health’s communicable disease lead, said that was a “decent” match since health officials shoot for a match between 40 and 60 per cent. He said health officials can’t determine which strain of influenza is most prevalent and how closely the vaccine matches it until about halfway through the season. The southern hemisphere, however, has just gone through a heavy flu season, with the H3N2 strain emerging as the dominant bug. “That’s a strain that typically hits seniors a lot harder,” Bharmal said. “The southern hemisphere kind of gives us an idea

of what we may expect into our season. It does give us some indication. It’s not always 100 per cent, and it’s really too early to tell whether what occurred in Australia and New Zealand will be what we see here.” To get a flu shot, book an appointment with your family doctor or local pharmacist or visit one of Fraser Health’s drop-in public health flu clinics. Anyone who’s walked along the Trans Mountain Trail in North Burnaby has probably noticed that some of the trees are marked with orange tags. That’s because Kinder Morgan, whose property the trail is on, has tagged them. It’s all part of a tree assessment the Texas-based company needs to complete to meet the City of Burnaby’s information requirements for its Trans Mountain expansion project. “(They) will not be removed.They have been tagged for inventory purposes,” read an email statement from Trans Mountain. “We are required to tag trees around Burnaby terminal.” Geoff Gooderham, a landscaped development technician with the City of Burnaby, confirmed the statement.

“If they need to do any work on their property, they need to provide us with a survey of trees.The only way they can count them up is by tagging them,” he told the NOW. Kinder Morgan is in the process of applying for what’s known as preliminary planning applications (PPA) for the pipeline project. “As a standard requirement for any applicant that wishes to remove trees, the city requires a tree management plan, which identifies (tags) any trees to be removed or retained,” reads a write-up on the city’s website. “The city has not approved any (PPAs) and has not received any tree-cutting application for this portion of the pipeline project.” Pictures of the tagged trees were uploaded to Twitter on Nov. 9 by Peter McCartney, a member of the Wilderness Committee, a Vancouver-based non-profit

society that has long been opposed to the $7.4-billion expansion project. The photos caused some confusion on social media as to why the trees were being tagged. Since the city has not issued Kinder Morgan any permits related to its tree-cutting bylaw, McCartney thought the company was “jumping the gun.” The City of Burnaby and Kinder Morgan are at an impasse.The company has asked the National Energy Board (NEB) to intervene to allow it to work. Earlier this month, the NEB announced oral hearings on the matter will take place on Nov. 29 and Dec. 4.The provinces of B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan will also participate. Kinder Morgan has warned if things don’t get moving, the project could be delayed by up to nine months.

The revised plan will see advance clearing of all residential streets and laneways, along with Priority 3 roads (residential streets). “It’s a bit more targeted,” said Carter. “We’re going to lean on some of our hard equipment vendors that we utilize to assist us.” The fleet will be equipped with a new tracking software to allow for “real-time information,” he added. “It can tell whether a plow’s up, sanders are on. ... We can (see) all the diagnostic trouble codes on vehicles. It gives us a better visual of what’s going on in the field.” When it comes to sidewalks, wheelchair ramps and bus stops, crews would normally wait until at least four centimetres of snow falls. Now, clearing will start regardless of accumulation, and those areas will be prioritized based on usage. Carter said Burnaby is also increasing its salt inventory – from 2,500 tonnes to 5,500 tonnes – so it doesn’t run out. Dave Ellenwood, the city’s director of parks, recreation and cultural services, said his department will be creating a digital map of all the hazards snow-removal equipment may run up against.That includes everything from curbs and speed bumps to catch basins. (Ellenwood’s team is responsible for clearing snow at all civic buildings as well as the sidewalks around parks.) It’s way past time to ditch this routine It is 9 a.m. in B.C. while we pen this editorial. But it’s 10 a.m. in Burnaby. Well, to be clear, the clock in the newsroom says it’s 10 a.m. We have yet to turn back the newsroom clock. There are a couple of reasons for this: One – we don’t have a ladder and, two – it reminds us of just how strange this whole turn-

back-the-clock thing is. Well, to be sure, it’s mostly about the first reason. But it really, really irks us. Twice a year, we give ourselves a bout of jet lag without the fun of having gone on a trip. This chronographic sleight-of-hand of switching between daylight time and standard time has been proven to be harm-

ful to our health, our ability to drive, our workplace productivity and safety, and our moods. Just ask any of the millions of parents of young children how much fun it is trying to outwit their circadian rhythms. And for what? The pleasure of watching the sun set at 4:15 p.m. from the comfort of our offices? The notion was cooked

up during the First World War as a means to save energy. Modern studies have shown it doesn’t. We struggle to find any rationale for keeping up our two-timing ways, other than our own institutional lethargy to buck the status quo. A gentle reminder for those who believe there’s an “extra hour”

of sunshine that can be snatched out of our alarm clocks: The number of hours of daylight we have in a 24-hour period is governed by cosmological laws completely out of our control. In September, the Union of B.C. Municipalities endorsed a resolution asking the province to consider scrapping this silly anachronism.

Premier John Horgan said he’s personally received thousands of emails from British Columbians on the matter. We say the province should stop hitting the snooze button and do away with this harmful, illogical and, above all, needless hubris. Let’s not do the time warp again.

Mayor needs to get on his bike and check city routes Dear Editor: Re: Willingdon Park plan rolls to completion. I was disappointed to hear the City of Burnaby did not follow the recommendations of the Burnaby HUB committee regarding the design of the Willingdon Linear Park. The volunteer committee does a lot of excellent work for the city. This is another example of Burnaby wasting tax payers’ money by building a poorly designed bike route. It will add to Burnaby’s legacy of being one of the worst cities to cycle. Mayor Derek Corrigan’s comment regarding the 7-Eleven Trail having no problems is ridiculous. Maybe he has been living under a rock for the last decade, because the city has received hundreds of complaints regarding the poorly designed trail. I think the real drama is the fact that Mayor Corrigan doesn’t ride his bike. Claude Tani, Burnaby

New waste system has gaps Dear Editor: The city’s new garbage and recycling program is an improvement over the old system. I like a lot of its features. However, the new system has gaps that need to be addressed. Along our street, the boulevard (city property) contains many mature deciduous trees that lose a huge volume of leaves at this time each year. When left unattended, the street becomes a mess, can be slippery and even dangerous. Our leaves have not been cleared since early October. Under the previous system, Burnaby citizens would bag

these leaves and the city would pick them up as part of the weekly program. We often had up to eight bags, depending on the week. The current system relies on citizens to bring excess leaves to the Burnaby Eco-Centre. This approach does not work if you don’t own a car, or only own a small car. We have a huge volume of leaves on our street well into November. The city needs to improve their garbage and recycling program to do a better job of leaf collection at this time of year. Why did you write about an enemy soldier? Dear Editor: Re: Sent to the Russian Front, Burnaby NOW, Nov. 10, re: Helmut Lemke. Nice of you to illustrate the Second World War from the enemy’s point of view. I, however, cannot see how we need to feel for a guy who tried to murder my father and those of his generation. Sure, he did not have much choice, but he is still not apologizing for his role in the war and certainly not for his country. Saying how he felt the war was justified because Germany was in such an economic recession because of the need to pay war reparations, for a war they were also responsible for. I knew Mr. Lemke when he was one of my teachers at Burnaby South. It was there I learned of his and Germany’s xenophobia and the right the Germans assumed for ethnic cleansing. He discussed how the purging the German society of what is known today as the intellectually developmental disordered and how it was a good solution Germany used to rid the country of a lot of problems.

Officer left dangling in chase A Vancouver police officer pursuing a pair of bank robbers got an unwanted lift in Burnaby.The incident began after a couple robbed a Coquitlam bank.Vancouver police officers spotted a man running from the bank and jumping into a waiting car.The officers gave chase until the car crashed into a pole at Holdom and Lougheed.The man jumped out and was quickly caught, but, when an officer reached into the getaway vehicle to get the keys, the woman driver stepped on the gas, leaving the officer dangling from the window.The incident came to an end when police shot a “warning shot” through the windshield.

City needs to get in gear and clean up streets

Dear Editor: Having lived in South Burnaby for over 40 years, I was shocked at the amount of trash and litter as you walk along Rumble Avenue between Nelson and Royal Oak. There are two schools in close proximity and one trash can for the entire two blockstretch. I’ve addressed this issue with Sav Dhaliwal a couple of years ago. Of course, he was big on promises but short on action. Having travelled extensively, it’s very depressing to return home and be welcomed with such an eye sore. I suggested a couple of solutions to our esteemed councillor but was met with deaf ears. Perhaps more city trash cans or even liaison with TransLink and get a bin by the bus stop. Pos-

sibly think outside the box and hire some of the homeless people who linger around Royal Oak and Rumble to do a regular cleanup. It’s time to bring back pride in our community. Rod Van Dorn, South Burnaby

Dear Editor: Re: Fourteen-storey tower with non-market rentals coming to Metrotown I’m thrilled to see how quickly this project has been approved. While the article does not state when the proposal first came to the attention of council, it probably wasn’t considered until after the July changes to the Metrotown Development Plan. To get a project of this size and benefit to lower-income Burnaby residents in less than half a year speaks to the political will being created at city hall to make more of these projects a reality. Community partners are going to keep showing up looking for more space, and we may soon have the problem of not having enough land available to take advantage of these subsidized housing developments. Public attention on the issue needs to remain, but it’s important to applaud these kinds of decisions and the speed in which this development was approved. The speed in which this development was approved should also send signals to other non-profit groups who want to partner on housing projects that they will find a receptive audience in Burnaby. The tree had knocked wires off an insulator and broken a cross member holding up the wires, so firefighters blocked off a section of Government Street until B.C. Hydro personnel arrived. “You just can’t put up a piece of tape or some traf-

fic cones and expect people to abide by them,” Kirk said. While the night was busy, it’s not the most calls the fire department has ever seen during a windstorm. “It’s not unusual to get 20 of them in one night, where we have every single truck babysitting wires,” he said. At the height of Tuesday’s windstorm, which saw winds gusting up to 61 kilometres per hour, about 10,000 B.C. Hydro customers were without power.

A female pedestrian was killed and a male pedestrian was sent to hospital in serious condition after a motor vehicle crash at a busy Burnaby intersection Wednesday. The pair, both in their 70s, were hit at about 2:30 p.m. after two vehicles collided at the intersection of Willingdon Avenue and Moscrop Street at about 2:30 p.m., according to Burnaby RCMP. The area around the intersection was closed off for about six hours as police investigated.The drivers of both vehicles are cooperating with the investigation, according to the RCMP. Burnaby Mounties are asking for anyone who witnessed the crash to call 604-

646-9999. According to ICBC, 43 per cent of all crashes with pedestrians happen between October and January, and 76 per cent of crashes involving pedestrians in B.C. happen at intersections.

“Busy intersections and shorter days mean that drivers need to be extra careful during fall and winter,” states an ICBC pedestrian safety bulletin.

With the holiday season right around the corner, the folks at Operation Red Nose want to make sure you get home safe. Burnaby, NewWestminster and Tri-Cities Operation Red Nose hits the road on Friday, Nov. 24 and will provide rides by donation to anyone who calls between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. every Friday and Saturday night up to and including NewYear’s Eve, Sunday, Dec. 31. (No rides will be available the weekend before Christmas, Dec. 22 and 23.) Donations collected are donated to the local KidSport chapter, a charity that gives kids in need the money to cover registration fees and/or equipment needed to play organized sports.

Despite poor weather last year, $4,300 was raised for KidSport Burnaby, according to ChrisWilson with Operation Red Nose B.C. This year, the Surrey and Langley Operation Red Nose organizers pulled out, soWilson expects his team will try and cover a bit of those areas.They also do pickups and drop-offs in EastVancouver and as far as the North Shore and Maple Ridge. The five-kilometre walk on Oct. 22 raised $25,000 for the cause, $5,000 more than the original goal. Multiple myeloma is an incurable form of cancer af-

fecting the plasma cells in the bone marrow. Every day, eight Canadians are diagnosed with the disease, with the average age in the mid-60s. “Despite a growing prevalence, myeloma remains relatively unknown,” says Aldo Del Col, co-founder and chairman of Myeloma Canada. “This is why there is an even greater need for early awareness programs to promote timely diagnosis.” The Multiple Myeloma March is held during the

months of September and October in 17 communities across the country. TREES TAKE ROOT Three ceremonial trees have been planted in Central Park as part of Canada’s 150th and Burnaby’s 125th birthdays this year. Burnaby was one of 50 communities across the nation to be awarded $25,000 by the Canadian National Railway Company to fund local tree-planting projects in honour of the anniver-

saries. Wendy Mould and Audrey Bakewell are hosting their Paints n’ Bloom Art Show and Sale Nov. 23 to 25 at GardenWorks at Mandeville. This is the seventh year and the 14th art show that the two have hosted to raise

money for the Alzheimer Society and to help create awareness of support available in the community. The two have chosen to support the society because both have had immediate family members affected by Alzheimer’s. Along with the art show, which is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, the two also host workshops leading up to the

Students at an allgirls Catholic school in Burnaby walked out of class and held a candlelight vigil in May 1988 in a last ditch effort to save their school. The 370 girls were caught in the middle of a dispute between the Vancouver Catholic school board and the newly unionized teachers at Marian Regional High School. The board announced a few days later that its decision to close the school was final. Contract negotiations between the board and teachers had broken down over a code of conduct the board wanted teachers to accept in their contract. “The teachers and the school board are like two people getting divorced and we’re the children caught in the middle,” said Grade 11 student Rachel Faltakas. The Moscrop Panthers senior boys volleyball team emerged from the BurnabyNew West league championships unscathed. Their next assignment will be a tougher test. Moscrop knocked off the Burnaby Central Wildcats 3-0 last Thursday to take the league crown. It came on the heels of a perfect 6-0 regular season for the Panthers, while the Wildcats entered the playoffs as one of three likely challengers with 4-2 records. Along with second-place Burnaby South, Moscrop enjoyed a bye to the semifinals, where they dispatched

Burnaby North. To get to the finals, Burnaby Central topped New West 3-1 in the opening round then took down Burnaby South to square up the championship berth. In their previous meeting, the Panthers defeated Burnaby Central 3-1. Burnaby North secured the third-place berth to the Lower Mainlands by beating Burnaby South 3-1. Earning all-star honours were Moscrop’s Markus Wong and Ligia Zhang, Burnaby Central’s Milos Koljancic and Herman Zhang, Burnaby North’s Justen Chau and Burnaby South’s Shan Lumase.

‘CATS WIN GIRLS CROWN From third place to

champions, the Burnaby Central Wildcats proved ready for the challenge at last week’s Burnaby-New West senior girls volleyball playoffs. It didn’t come easy, as Central went the distance against the regular season champion Moscrop Panthers in a fifth-and-deciding set before prevailing 3-2 last Thursday. The Panthers, who entered the playoffs undefeated in league action but without a key starter, sat sixth in provincial AAAA rankings at the beginning of the month. Burnaby Central, meanwhile, had built its case by winning four of its final five league games, with their last loss a 3-0 defeat at the

hands of Moscrop. With the top-two regular season teams earning byes, the Wildcats got an extra game to build their case, starting the playoffs with a 3-0 victory over New West. In the semifinals, they blanked Burnaby North by the same score, while the Panthers were equally as effective against Burnaby Mountain. The Wildcats’ Alisha Cooper and Crystal Mendez led the all-star list, that included Moscrop’s Stephanie Sung and Mari Wong, Burnaby North’s Letizia Bonacquisti, and Burnaby Mountain’s Jenessa Quan. Burnaby Central now hosts the Lower Mainlands, which began yesterday (past the NOW’s deadline).

Steelers cultivate four-game streak Mario Sever picked a good time to score his first goal of the 2017-18 Pacific Junior B Hockey League season. The second-year forward for the Grandview Steelers counted his first marker of the year on Sunday, 9:55 into the second period. It gave the Steelers a brief 2-0 lead but was followed 31 seconds later with a goal by Abbotsford’s Brady Morton.

Emma Pringle, Jenna-lee Baxter, Magnus Kristensen and Marcello and Matteo Polisi accomplished impressive firsts this week. The Simon Fraser University soccer quintet were recognized in their conferences as All-West regional first-team all stars. Pringle and Baxter received their honours as Div. 2 Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) Women’s All-West selections, having previously earned similar kudos at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. A sophomore with the Clan, Pringle tied for the GNAC lead with 14 goals and has 23 over 32 career games for the Burnaby Mountain team. Baxter, a junior, picked up 13 assists over 16 games for SFU, putting her first in the NCAA for assists-pergame average (0.81). The SFU women wrapped up the season with a 7-9-0 record. On the men’s side, the Polisis brothers and Kristensen claimed their awards after helping lead SFU to

its second GNAC title in as many years. The reigning GNAC Defensive Player of theYear, Kristensen is a three-time All-West region selection. He led the Clan that limited the opposition to just 14 goals.The senior also contributed with two goals and three assists. After redshirting last year, Marcello Polisi played nealry 1,500 minutes over all 17 games. He was a dominating addition at midfield, and chipped in a goal and an assist. His brother Matteo had a standout debut as well, earning the GNAC Freshman of theYear award after posting 10 goals. He ranked third in the league with 24 points and scored five game-winning goals. The men’s team saw its season come to an end in the first round of the NCAA championshiop tournament, going 11-3-4. The SFU men now move forward for consideration for the D2CCA All-American Team, to be announced on Dec. 1.
