A Burnaby cheese factory is crying over about 82,000 litres of spilled milk after a fire knocked out power to the facility for about 12 hours Tuesday. Firefighters were called to the back of the Scardillo Cheese factory at 7865Venture St. off Lake City Way at around 9:15 a.m.They arrived to find a power pole in flames. “There was a powerline that ran down along the exterior of the pole

into the ground and then into the cheese factory only about 30 or 40 feet away,” assistant fire Chief Laine Zimmermann told the NOW. “It was a main powerline servicing that building.” Kathy Scardillo, an administrator at the business and wife of owner Rocky Scardillo, said she heard three loud bangs before the power went out, leaving 82,000 litres of milk in the factory to warm. “It was in the vats to make cheese,” she said. blaze directly at first because the powerline was still live, Zimmermann said, so they deflected water and foam off the factory wall and kept the flames under control for about 20 minutes with broken streams to avoid electricity conducting back to the firefighters at the hoses. B.C. Hydro initially shut down an entire circuit, taking out power to about 170 customers, before isolating the line to the cheese factory. A squirrel apparently sparked the blaze by chewing through a piece of

equipment on the hydro pole, according to B.C. Hydro. Five trucks and 15 firefighters responded to the call. Originally, power to the building wasn’t expected to be restored untilWednesday, and Scardillo rented generators to keep its coolers of cheese from suffering the same fate as its milk, but the power ended up being back on by about 9:20 p.m. Scardillo estimated the company will lose about a week of production disposing of the milk and cleaning up.

The provincial NDP government has dug deep into its past, and Canada’s as well, to help fight the Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion that would triple the oil shipped by Kinder Morgan from Edmonton to Burnaby. Attorney General David Eby and Environment Minister George Heyman announced at a press conference Thursday morning the provincial government has hired Thomas Berger as external counsel for all legal actions related to the pipeline expansion. Berger, 84, fits the bill on many counts for the new government. He’s a former Vancouver NDP MP (1962-1963) and MLA (1966-69). He served as provincial party leader in 1969, prior to Dave Barrett taking over and becoming premier in 1972.That’s when Barrett appointed Berger as a B.C. Supreme Court Judge. He went on to lead three federal royal commissions, including one on the MacKenzie Valley Pipeline (1974-77) and another on Indian and Inuit health care (1979-80). Since then he has done a lot of work with First Nations. Continued on page 10

Crowds celebrate B.C. Day at the museum B.C. Day celebrations were in full swing on Monday at the Burnaby Village Museum Despite a slow start, according to marketing coordinator Nancy Stagg, an estimated 3,000 people visited the museum to check out the numerous activities lined up for the holiday.

The most popular activity? The Vancouver Circus School’s station, Stagg said. “They bring all bright items, so it looks very fun and engaging,” she added. The Burnaby Village Museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11 a.m.

Man dies after blow at Starbucks Homicide team is investigating death of 22-year-old man Cornelia Naylor

The death of a 22-yearold man after an altercation at a Burnaby Starbucks last month is being investigated as a homicide. Burnaby RCMP responded to a report of an altercation at the Starbucks by Hastings Street and Kensington Avenue on July 12, according to a statement from the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), which has taken over the investigation. At the scene, police found a man suffering injuries from the incident. He was taken to hospital but died on July 15, when IHIT took over the case. A small memorial outside of the Starbucks identifies the victim as Michael PageVincelli.

“I miss you so much,” states one unsigned card. “I’m no good at goodbyes, so I will see you later. I will see you on the other side. I love you.” “We miss Michael so much.You’re in our heart always.We love you,” reads another card signed by “Grandfather Tony (Anthony) and Grandmother Beverly.” A witness told the CBC an argument had started outside the Starbucks over a cigarette butt tossed from a car. A woman had tossed the butt out of the window and Page-Vincelli had picked it up and thrown it back at her, according to the witness. Education is key to a thriving workforce Education is critical if B.C. is to have a competitive economy where jobs are available for local residents and employers don’t have to go offshore for skilled workers. Thankfully, it appears the new NDP government is recognizing this fact by restoring free tuition for adults seeking to upgrade their education. In an announcement

Tuesday, Premier John Horgan reintroduced free tuition for adult basic education and English as a second language courses, removing an important barrier to post-secondary education. This means that even adults who have graduated can upgrade their math and other academic courses, and newcomers can upgrade their English language skills without paying hundreds of

dollars in tuition fees, thus enhancing their education opportunities and, ultimately, their participation in a growing economy. This is particularly good news in a city like Burnaby, where so many residents are not native English speakers. In fact, according to recently released data from the 2016 census, more than 130,000 people – about 56 per cent of the city’s popula-

tion – have a mother tongue other than English. And more than 16,000 Burnaby residents can not carry on a conversation in English. According to figures released by the NDP prior to the election, the new education initiative could cost $7 million a year, although the exact cost to taxpayers won’t be released until the September budget. Still, this is good news for

students applying for programs beginning this fall. When it comes to higher learning, making courses more accessible and reducing economic barriers is not a new idea. As recently as 2008, the provincial government under the B.C. Liberals made high school courses free for graduated adults as part of its so-called Education Guarantee.

In 2012, however, the number of tuition-free courses was reduced and, in 2015, free tuition was eliminated altogether for adults who had graduated but wanted to upgrade. Will this restoration end the current skills shortage for B.C. employers? Not on its own, but it’s a good first step.

Time to check the dark places As the new B.C. government settles in and email accounts are transferred over, it’ll soon be time for them to pluck up the courage to check the cellar. The nooks and crannies of government operations, if you will. Some of what they’ll find may come as a shock. Think of it as the former government outsourcing operations, getting them off the books, so to speak, and as far away as possible from pesky things such as legislative oversight or B.C.’s access to information legislation. There’s AdvantageBC – an independent non-profit society – whose members enjoy an annual provincial tax rebate in the neighbourhood of $25 million. Its CEO, Colin Hansen, says the organization focuses “mostly on companies in China,” even though the bulk of its members are born and bred right here in North America.The new government can’t fire Hansen, they can’t even appoint a member to the board of directors, independent and all. Then there’s HQ Vancouver, set up to attract head offices to Vancouver. It received $3.3 million from B.C.’s Ministry of International Trade. It too is focused on China but seems to be having some teething issues, according to an April article in the Financial Post: “HQ Vancouver’s ‘success stories’ suspect as Asian companies sputter or fall under scrutiny.” Both the B.C. government and HQ Vancouver

made a big deal out of the decision two years ago of China-based F-Pacific Optical Communications – a manufacturer of fibre optic components – to open its North American headquarters in Surrey. Former premier Christy Clark called it the “start of great things” for both F-Pacific and HQ Vancouver.Turns out when the Financial Post showed up at the Surrey site they found the plant vacant and a For Lease sign up. The New Car Dealers Association of B.C. runs the government’s $46-million electric car incentive program, as theVancouver Sun’s Gordon Hoekstra reported in April. It’s not known what the association charges to oversee the program. Somehow the Quebec and Ontario governments manage to do it all on their own. The association has donated more than $1.3 million to the B.C. Liberal party since 2005.Their counterpart in Ontario can’t donate to political parties, since a ban came into place in that province this year. Their executive director could make personal donations – but based on Ontario’s new individual limit, it would take more than 360 years to donate $1.3 million. In May,Vancouver journalist Bob Mackin reported on the Forest Enhancement Society of B.C., another independent, non-profit society arranged by government that can also thumb its nose at the province’s access to information laws. Shoplifter packs a fake bomb Walmart loss-prevention officers got an unpleasant surprise in April when they discovered what looked like a handgun and a bomb in the bag of a 30-year-old man they had detained for shoplifting. The handgun turned out to be a replica and the bomb a fake – but a really convincing fake, featuring two sticks of dynamite with a timer attached. It was realistic enough to spark an evacuation of the Lougheed mall store and a visit from the RCMP bomb squad.The man faced a variety of charges.

The owner of a Burnabybased chocolate factory has decided to take her business in a different direction after finding out her supplier was linked to child labour. Last Christmas, Shelley Wallace of Hagensborg Chocolates decided to do some research on her supply chain. She soon discovered the company where she was getting her cocoa from had cacao farms in Ghana and the Ivory Coast. “There’s two million (children) enslaved currently in cocoa production there. It’s horrible,” she says. “Because I have three children myself, I started digging more into the internet and learning more about what was involved, and it was all very clear there was a big, big problem.” Wallace, who did not want to name the supplier, immediately dumped the company and went with a new supply chain – Mesocacao and Cacao Bisiesto – in Nicaragua. Cacao Bisiesto collects the beans from cacao farmers, and unlike her previous supplier, pays them up to 30 per cent higher than world market cocoa prices. “It offers them a chance

to buy more trees if they want to invest in the farming; it gives them an opportunity to have a better livelihood for their families,” says Wallace. The beans are then fermented, dried and sold to Mesocacao. “I started looking for a resource that I could personally go (to) and make sure there was no slavery,” she says. “I figured the best way

It was rolling hills with cacao growing wild on them and little shanty homes that the farmers lived in,” she says, noting the average farmer lives on about $2,000 a year. “You would be con-

sidered middle-class if you owned a motorcycle.You’re lucky if you own a horse to get into town.” While Wallace was in Central America, she helped her supply chain buy a couple of motorcycles. She recalls one cacao farmer getting excited about the changes. “Our supply chain also helps our farmers learn to prune their trees and plant new ones. Once you prune a tree, it produces better. He was willing to learn and make some changes to increase his yield, which increased five times,” she tells the NOW. Wallace admits she felt overwhelmed when she came home. “I wanted to save Nicaragua and educate people. But I realized that my job is not to save Nicaragua. My job is to sell more chocolate to people with a conscience and help Nicaragua save itself,” she says. This month,Wallace will be offering equity shares in her company through a platform called frontfundr. com. She hopes through a $250 (or more) contribution, the public can help her raise $550,000 so she can expand her product line to include 10 flavours of choc-

The BC Utilities Commission (BCUC) has initiated an inquiry into BC Hydro’s Site C project, as directed by the Provincial Government in Order-in-Council (OIC) 244 on August 2, 2017.

Henrickson’s talk was part of the DiverCity exhibition that recently wrapped up at the Burnaby Arts Council’s gallery. The arts council has just opened a new exhibition, Silent Disparities. The full scope of the inquiry is set out in the government’s terms of reference for the OIC, which is available online: http://www.bcuc.com/Sitecinquiry.html. The inquiry will be handled in two phases. In the first phase, the BCUC will gather information and produce a preliminary report. Those parties who would like to submit data and analysis to be considered for inclusion in the preliminary report are invited to submit that by no later than August 30, 2017. Data and analysis submitted during this first phase must be within the scope of the OIC. Opportunity for public comment on the preliminary report will be provided during the second phase of the review. Process details for the second phase will be provided once established.

Work plans still outstanding Continued from page 1 Eby said Berger is still active, including appearing before the Supreme Court of Canada last year. “He is a living example of modern First Nations law in Canada,” said Eby. The province will seek intervenor status for the National Energy Board judicial review slated for federal court in November. Eby said there are 21 parties challenging the NEB process and decision, and he will seek advice from Berger on the province’s intervention. In addition, the Squamish First Nation has gone to court to challenge the adequacy of the consultation process by the province. The provincial government

is named as a respondent in that case, but the current regime agrees with the First Nations’ contention that there wasn’t enough consultation done by the previous government. “We’re also asking Mr. Berger to advise us on any other legal tools that we should be looking at … to protect our interests,” said Eby. Kinder Morgan recently announced it would begin construction on portions of the pipeline in September. Heyman said eight permits have been issued, but they can’t be acted on until the company meets the requirements of the environmental assessment certificate issued by the previous government.

“Only three have been accepted to date, and the other five have not been accepted because they have not, according to the environmental assessment office, met the test of adequate consultation with First Nations,” said Heyman. “Until those plans are completed, Kinder Morgan, with the exception of private land and some clearing of rightsof-way, cannot put shovels in the ground.They need to have those work plans accepted. It is highly unlikely that can be completed by Sept. 12, and, until it is completed, they are not able to begin work.They will be in violation of their environmental assessment certificate, the one that exists today.”

For the third time since 2011, Matt Andersen will bring his own blend of roots and soul to the Burnaby Blues + Roots Festival stage at Deer Lake Park – but this time it’ll be just him and his guitar. The New Brunswick native (who now lives in Nova Scotia just outside Halifax)

This is your third time at Blues Fest.What brings you back? Well, being asked for one. It’s a great festival, and I’m looking forward to getting back.The first time I played, I came alone solo, and the last time I was there with the band. And I’m coming back solo this time, so I’m looking forward to it. I love the site, too, and it’s great the music goes on all day. It’s pretty cool. Tell me about the new album, Honest Man. I recorded that in New York with Commissioner Gordon as the producer. He’s worked with Amy Winehouse, Santana and a bunch of different people. And yeah, it was great. It was downtown Manhattan right near Madison Square Garden. It was great. He has a whole roll of really cool people to bring on and play on the album. It was great. Each song we would treat like its own little project and bring in the beat players for each song, kind of thing. … I’m really happy with it. You’ve been at this a while. Has your music

changed over time? It’s always kind of feels the same as the person making it. For me, there’s more and more influences now as far as musically because I’m being exposed to more music as the years go on, but also the writing is definitely different.When I first started writing, I was writing from the first-person perspective, everything was I or me, and I kind of feel like you kind of grow out of that after a while. For people who haven’t heard your music or haven’t been to Blues Fest, how would you describe it? Usually I say roots and soul. It’s just me and my guitar, so I guess that’s as folky as I’ll ever be. I’ve got a lot of different influences. I grew up on classic rock my brothers had and a lot of the country my folks listened to, but also a lot of Irish music that mashes in there a little bit. What can people expect from your show? I’m just going to be doing my thing. It’ll be just me and my guitar, and I’ll be playing stuff off my new album, of course, and the whole back catalogue as well, so I think it’s going to be a lot of fun. I think Sue Foley’s on before me, which means I’m not going to

just sit back and relax and coast because Sue’s fantastic. And Trombone Shorty, I think, is who’s after me, and they’re fantastic. I think it’s going to be a great night of music. I’m pretty happy to be part of it. What about your expectations for the show? What do you want to get out of this? I’ve enjoyed myself out there. I find the crowds are really into the music going on, and I think the vibe on the stage is great.We’ve got two stages, … and people have got lots of energy.They

haven’t been beaten up by a weekend of camping out in the rain or anything like that, so people are usually pretty engaged. I’m looking forward to getting back in front of that crowd again. What are you most proud of? I don’t know. It’s pretty cool to be able to say that I’m a full-time musician for all these years.There’s not very many that can say that, so I think I’m pretty fortunate to be able to say that. Is this success? What does success look like?

After the summer, I’ve got a few more festivals left here in Canada, and then I’m off to Europe – Germany and the U.K., I think, for a couple weeks. Art lover? Of course you are, and the Burnaby Arts Council has a lot in store this month – just for you. Starting this week, there are two new exhibitions to check out at the Deer Lake Gallery. Inside, you’ll find Silent Disparities, featuring acrylic and mixed media pieces by Tom Douglas and Sara Khan. Douglas is an award-winning artist and poet whose expressionist work is described as an “unrelenting series of brushstrokes that almost bruise the canvas with colour and form,” notes a press release. “His work is said to oscillate between specific and ambiguous imagery, from erratic forms to intimate contact. His strong and dramatic abstract works are unconscious memory retrieval expressed in paint,” reads the release. Khan takes memory and reality and reimagines it through paint. “Her scapes have a very modernist feel with structures in colour presented in minimalist manner,” reads the release. Silent Disparities runs until Sept. 2. Once you’ve experienced Douglas and Khan’s work, step outside the gallery to view the latest outdoor garden exhibition – Jazz Wood. Organized by the Burnaby Arts Council, Jazz Wood features the work of sculptor Peter Lattey. “Lattey’s work can best be described as jazz music carved into wood.The forms and shapes flow sen-

He now lives in Los Angeles, where he collects raw wood from the city’s urban forests to mould into his creations. Fundraiser planned to beneﬁt at-risk youth The Burnaby Winter Club is hosting a fundraising dinner on Saturday, Aug. 26. It’s all for Dan’s Legacy, a charity that supports at-risk youth in the Greater Vancouver area.The money raised will go towards its counselling and life-skills programs. “Our community dinner is a relaxed, family-oriented event where we celebrate the achievements of the young people we’re working with, as well as our community partnerships,” says executive director Barbara Coates in a press release. “It’s a chance for people to come and enjoy amazing food, learn about the work we’re doing and help make a difference in the lives of at-risk youth.” The appetizers and desserts will be provided by Burnaby’s very own chef Shay Kelly of The Caterer. Derek Kwok and Justin Heussner are learning to fly at Abbotsford Airport with Coast Pacific Aviation, while Wen Shen Lee and Yu Chun Fu, both graduates from Burnaby North Secondary, are learning to fly at the Langley Airport. “When you hear that only 36 scholarships were awarded, you realize what an amazing achievement it is for the squadron,” notes a

press release. Lee is excited about the opportunity. “It’s not every day you get to fly a plane. Really, flying is so unnatural, you never know what might happen, and there are always things to do in the cockpit. I think that is why I love it a lot,” he says in the release. To be selected for a flying scholarship, cadets have to complete an application,

There are literally countless ingredients one can add to their hamburger mix to create a flavourful burger patty, and trying to cover all of them in a single food column would be next to impossible.Therefore, I will focus on some general tips and a handful of unique ideas for you.The burger patty itself should be flavourful; don’t rely on just the toppings to make it taste good. If it doesn’t taste good on its own, you are not done making the burger patty yet. Let your pantry and spice rack be your guide.Think of the type of burger you would like to create based on what you have on hand. Maybe you would like to create an Italian burger? Then use herbs such as basil and oregano and add lots of garlic. An Asian-type burger would be better suited with sesame oil, sesame seeds, and maybe some Chinese five-spice powder.

Let your imagination run wild and you may become famous … to not only introduce flavour but also to add moisture. A dry burger patty is not very palatable. Sometimes I will also include a chunk of meltable cheese in the middle of each patty, like mozzarella, for a hidden cheesy centre. Also, keep in mind the salt content of the cheeses you select; salt and pepper to your burger mix is crucial, but you don't want it to be overly salty.

Breadcrumbs are not always necessary to make a good burger, and with the number of gluten intolerant people seemingly on the rise, this is more important to know than ever. Breadcrumbs act as a good binder to help hold the burger together by giving it some stability, but breadcrumbs also tend to dry out the burger as well. Some of my best burger creations were created without any breadcrumbs at all and just relied on eggs to hold the patties together when cooking. Keep in mind that the number of wet ingredients one is adding to the mix must then be kept to a minimum, as there will be no crumbs to soak up the excess moisture. You can also serve burger patties in lettuce cups, which I find is a refreshing change from regular burger buns. Probably the best tip I can share when cooking red meat is to add a small amount of dark berry jam, like blueberry jam or blackberry jam, to your raw hamburger mix.The dark full-

berry jam to each pound of red meat should result in a complementary effect. My last suggestion is to simply be resourceful. Armed with a knife and a cutting board, a look in the refrigerator may uncover such hidden gems to add to the mix, such as pickles, hot

day in September 2003 to find a big road grader on top of her 1990 Volkswagen Cabriolet. The large machine had been travelling uphill on Eton Street when it lost power and began to roll backwards. Our brains, when under the influence of strong emotions, will generate thoughts consistent with those feelings.When we are anxious, our thoughts magnify the difficulties of our situation and minimize our abilities to cope.When sadness takes hold, our thoughts focus on the negative aspects of our situation, our selves and our future.When anger takes over, our thoughts spring from a narrowed and hurt sense of self. These mood-congruent thoughts both perpetuate the same feelings and drive us to act in ways that make our situations worse. Caught up in anger and seeing only our own point of view, we can lash out. Overwhelmed by anxiety and doubting our own abilities, we avoid and withdraw. Stuck in sadness and seeing only the negative, we may give up and stop trying. Applying the principles of

cognitive behavioural therapy, we can step out of the automatic vicious cycles that get us stuck in negative feelings.The first step is to be mindful of our changing feelings. If we don’t, we won’t see how our emotional states are influencing our thoughts and actions. Mindfulness allows us to recognize unhelpful thoughts before they take hold.We can then challenge them with more adaptive

thoughts that can get us out of those automatic cycles. With mindful and deliberate practice, we can replace old patterns of thinking, feeling and acting. Here are some of the thinking traps we all fall into from time to time. Recognizing these common patterns can help you recognize

them in yourself, challenge them and replace them with more balanced thoughts. The trick is to pick up on them as they arise from a compassionate perspective. Don’t beat yourself up. ! All or Nothing (Black and White) Thinking. “It has to be just right, or it’s a total disaster.” “If I’m not perfect, I’m a complete failure.” ! Jumping to Conclusions (e.g. Mindreading and Fortune Telling). “She did that just to hurt me.” “They think I’m a total loser.” “I’m going to fail this exam.” ! Overgeneralizing. “Nothing ever goes my way.” “No one is nice to me.” “Everything at school (or work) is all bad.” ! Magnification (Catastrophizing) and Minimizing. “I’m going to blow this quiz and then I’ll fail the whole year.” “That little success was nothing.” ! Negative labelling. “I’m a loser.” “She’s an angry person.” ! Personalization. “It’s all my fault when things

don’t go well.” “He did that just to hurt me.” I’m sure you can see how these types of thoughts can make us feel worse about any situation, but what can you do once you’ve caught yourself in a thinking trap? Ask yourself, “Is there another way of thinking about this?” “What would a loved one tell me in this situation?” “What would I say to a good friend who’s thinking this way?” With practice, you’ll come up with more adaptive and balanced thoughts that will actually improve your feelings about a situation and move you to act in a positive direction. For lasting changes, we have to harness the power of positive neuroplasticity – by rehearsing and reinforcing more adaptive ways of thinking until they become our new habits of thought. It was so special the first time that the Burnaby Braves did it twice. In the span of just a week, the under-15 baseball team captured a pair of provincial banners to continue a dream season. Burnaby played host and claimed the Baseball B.C. AA title with an 11-9 victory over TriCity, thanks to a two-run bomb off the bat of Jack Suttle in the sixth inning. Suttle hammered the pitch over the fence to unlock a 9-9 contest, while the Braves closed it out in the seventh. Turning in sharp pitching work over the seven innings were Jordan Swannie and Sean Coventry. It wrapped up a six-game series where Burnaby outscored its competition 70-26, with the only blemish coming in the final round-robin game.That setback – 6-1 to Delta – provided just the extra-kick they needed, said manager Antonio Dal Sasso. “The turning point was us losing the fourth game in the round robin,” said Dal Sasso. “We had gone over 20 games without a loss, and the loss really got our boys refocused in the semis and finals. (Coaches) Brent Swannie and Rob Tinucci did a great job in keeping the boys loose and focused.”

The squad responded with a resounding 12-1 victory over Prince George, led by Kevin Morgan’s pitching and home runs from Carter Findley and Jordan Swannie. It gave them a healthy boost heading into the final, where they were pushed right to the limit by Tri-City. A week earlier, Burnaby proved unstoppable at the B.C. Minor provincial tournament, posting five mercy-rule victories including a 22-3 decision over Ladner that saw Suttle blast a grand slam and Stefano Dal Sasso and Coventry also going yard. Delivering strong innings of work throughout the week were Nolan Keller, Kevin Morgan, Jordan Swannie, Coventry and Suttle.

The home runs and clutch hitting has emerged just as the coaches hoped during the tournament stage, but manager Dal Sasso notes the squad’s pitching has been their bread and butter en route to the twin provincial titles. “Pitching has always been our biggest strength and now the bats have finally arrived – the boys have changed their approach at the plate.We used to pop up and strike out. Now we hit line drives and almost never strike out. Hit the ball hard and great things will happen,” he said. The win streak was a product of hard work, as they maintained a positive attitude even when a few players struggled. “You can tell the boys were

getting better weekly and when a few of the boys weren’t firing on all cylinders, other players stepped up and kept the team going,” said Dal Sasso. The road continues this weekend, as the team is in San Diego for the Summer Sizzle Wooden Bat tournament, which the

No one said it would be easy. The Burnaby Lakers remain fixated on winning their next game and getting some sustainable momentum going in their best-of-seven semifinal series with the Victoria Shamrocks. Trouble is, on the heels of Wednesday’s 12-10 loss in Victoria, the Lakers are now on the clock – there is no wiggle room left. Trailing the Shamrocks 3-1 in the series, Burnaby must win Friday’s showdown at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre (6 p.m.) or see a promising season go down the drain. If Wednesday is any indication, the squad still has plenty of fight left. “There’s no excuses,” said team president Ed Safarik. “When we want it, we can do it.We just had a few defensive lapses, lapses that ended up costing us.” The Lakers spent a good portion of the game in the B.C. capital playing catch-up after seeing a 2-0 start evaporate behind six straight Victoria tallies. Just 38 seconds into Game 4, Lakers’ captain Robert Church put the visitors up 1-0, and was extended to 2-0 on Eli McLaughlin’s marker midway through the period. But Victoria surged into the fray, spurred on by 1,600 local fans, with three goals in a span of 3:10 – including a shorthanded tally by Chris Wardle – to claim the lead after 20 minutes. In the second period, the home team upped its advantage to 6-2 and looked to be in charge, as Sheldon Burns and former Laker Casey Jackson popped in goals just nine seconds apart. It was met by Burnaby’s run, with McLaughlin, Matt Spanger and Church making it a one-goal game. After Victoria’s Mike Triolo made it 7-5, the Lakers’ Josh Byrne unloaded for a pair just 14 seconds apart to tie it all up heading into the third. McLaughlin gave Burnaby the lead 2:26 into the period and created cause for optimism, only to see Victoria reply with another three-goal swing, followed by the two teams trading goals over the final four-and-a-half minutes. Church’s fourth goal of the game, with 1:12 on the clock, opened the door as Burnaby pressed forward for the equalizer.The ’Rocks, who finished fourth in the regular season, iced it with 15 seconds left. Church finished with five points, and sits atop the playoff scoring list with 13 goals and 22 points. Burnaby outshot Victoria 51-48. The two teams meet Friday, 6 p.m. at the Copeland arena. If the Lakers force a sixth game, it will go Sunday in Victoria. A potential seventh game would be played Tuesday in Burnaby.

Burnaby contributes to B.C.’s haul With the Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg coming to a close this weekend, a couple of Burnaby athletes got an early start on celebrating medal performances on behalf of Team B.C. Peter Behncke picked up a silver medal in the men’s hammerthrow, reaching 51.14 metres, behind teammate Sam Willett’s 54.50 throw. In the female 400m freestyle swimming competition, Burnaby’s Zoe Froh secured a berth by posting the third-best time overall in the heats, at 4:29.65. In the final, the Hyack Swim Club member picked up bronze with a time of 4:26.55. Placing fifth in the female 1000m canoe was Samantha Loutet. Nathan Mah placed third in the men’s 400m B final. CANADA DOMINATES IN CUP OPENER The Canadian women’s rugby team opened the 2017 World Cup with a resounding 98-0 win over Hong Kong, setting a strong tone to begin the championship. Canada scored 16 tries and bottled Hong Kong up in their own zone much of the night, setting a Canadian all-time mark for points in a Women’s Rugby World Cup game. The 23-player roster includes three from B.C., including the Burnaby Lake Rugby Club’s Carolyn McEwen.
