A former Burnaby school trustee has taken to Twitter to celebrate Canada’s big 1-5-0. On Sept. 23, 2016, Mondee Redman spotted a tweet about the 100day countdown until 2017 and the country’s birthday. The following day, she announced on the social media platform that she’d tweet “a Canadian thing” every day until July 1, using the hashtag #Canada150.Those things would be collectables Redman had lying around the house. “I have a Canada 1967 mug in a china cabinet. I just thought, hey I’m going to post this, and just kind of went from there,” she said of her first tweet. “I have a lot of neat stuff, and I don’t get to show it off to enough people. I love Twitter for this.” Redman is a fourth-generation Canadian. Her great-grandparents homesteaded in the prairies. “We always had stuff around the house, and I come from people who Continued on page 11

Hit-and-run driver may face charges By Cornelia Naylor

Criminal and motor vehicle charges are being considered against a Surrey woman suspected of hitting two flaggers in

Burnaby Wednesday with her SUV before allegedly assaulting two children. An online video of one of the hit and runs shows the SUV stopped in front of a female flagger on 10th Avenue near Kingsway.

The flagger is then knocked down and run over after stepping in to stop the SUV from merging into a moving line of traffic. The suspect vehicle fled the scene without stop-

ping, according to Burnaby RCMP, who got the call at about 11:30 a.m. When police arrived, they found two flaggers had actually been hit in the same construction zone.

The mystery of the centennial wall A reporter who always wondered about a 1967 logo on a cement wall in Burnaby uncovers a love story with Canada and the man behind it all By Grant Granger

A cement retaining wall sits proudly in front of a home north of Metrotown. It’s not tall but it stands tall. It displays a maple leaf on the left, in the middle is ‘1967,’ and on the right is a stylized symbol that’s a mystery to most millennials. “The strange thing about the centennial symbol is the kids think it’s the Jewish star,” says John Chepil, who lives across the street from the wall. As most Canadians born before 1967 know, it is the logo Canada adopted during the celebration of its 100-year anniversary. How it came to be etched on a wall on Buxton Street is a love story. A love of country and community. And a personal one, too. The home was built by Ernest Eckerlin in 1965, and he erected the wall two years later to honour his adopted country. His next door neighbour, Antonio Candido, says Eckerlin grew up in the Black Forest region of southwestern Germany. Although he was only 18 when the Second World War ended, the Nazis conscripted Eckerlin as a teenager. “He had no choice, you either go or they shoot you, it was that type of scenario,” says Candido. According to Candido, while serving in the German forces, Eckerlin met Heinz Schoenfelder, who became his lifelong partner. Early in their service, they were captured by the Allied forces and sent to a camp in England where they worked on a farm. When Canada opened up immigration, Eckerlin and Schoenfelder took advantage and came over in 1955, about the same time Candido’s father arrived from Portugal. “He referred to Heinz as his cousin,” says Chepil, but there was no doubt they were a couple. “They were together right through the whole escapade coming from Canada,” says Candido, who adds when the pair arrived in this country they worked for the Canadian National Railway as bakers along with doing other jobs. They settled in Burnaby with Schoenfelder, who died in 2005, working as a chef at the Blue Boy Motor Hotel in South Vancouver while Eckerlin established his own construction company. (Chepil says Eckerlin built a complete subdivision in Port Moody.) The sentiment of the wall came from Eckerlin’s heart. “It’s true freedom, this country, and he realized that. And he wanted to show that,” says Candido. “He was grateful to be in a country where you could be yourself.” “He used to put a flag out for Canada

Day,” says David Little, who was born on the property next door to Chepil in 1947 and helped Eckerlin’s brick layer when the house was built. “He was a very, very nice man. He was very friendly to me when I was growing up.” Nice is an adjective that flows freely from the lips of neighbours when describing Eckerlin, who died on Oct. 30, 2013, just four days shy of his 87th birthday. “He was such a nice man,” says Linda Zimmerman, who along with her husband Paul bought the house after his death because Paul’s father Lloyd lived kitty corner to the home and was a good friend of Eck-

erlin’s. “We just like (the centennial wall). We tried to keep whatever memories that we can (of Eckerlin).” Says Little, “I was very happy they retained it. Both men enjoyed that house.” Candido didn’t arrive on Buxton until 1996 when he built a house next door. “He always made the effort to make friends with everyone he came in contact with,” says Candido. “That’s how we became good friends. If you were willing, he was willing. He would make the extra effort to get you to be his friend, no matter what situation, whether he agreed with you or not, he would always make that attempt.

“He used to tell the stories about when he was young. I enjoyed that. He was that type of person he was, he made the extra effort because if you wanted to reciprocate he would be your friend.” When Candido, who was a union shop steward at B.C.Tel, worked on his garden on a hot day, Eckerlin, a gardner himself, would show up at about 2 p.m., with a couple of beers in hand declaring, “Coffee break. Police are looking for witnesses after a 24-year-old man was shot in an area close to a large playground in Burnaby Tuesday. Burnaby RCMP was called to the area of Edmonds Park (formerly called Richmond Park) at about 9 p.m. for shots fired. When they arrived at the scene, near the basketball courts and playground behind the Edmonds Community Centre, they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds. Police said the victim, a Burnaby resident, was taken to hospital with minor injuries and has since been released. The victim is known to police, according to Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Daniela

Oh, Canada – we are grateful for it all Just for one day, put it all aside. Forget squabbling over partisan politics and fretting over budgets and arguing over the best way to solve the hot-button issues of the moment. Instead, take a moment to think about why you’re lucky to be in Canada. With our nation’s 150th birthday on Saturday, it’s

time to remind ourselves why we’re privileged to be able to call ourselves Canadian. Everyone has their own ideas. Here are a few of ours: It’s beautiful. From sea to sea to sea, its postcardperfect scenery is unsurpassed – from the rocky shores of Newfoundland to the big-sky country of

the Prairies to the mountain majesty of British Columbia. It’s diverse. From its First Nations to the descendants of the first European settlers to the newest arrivals from the farthest reaches of the globe, Canada is a nation that welcomes many cultures and languages. This multicultural mosaic en-

riches all our lives. It’s peaceful. For those who’ve always lived here, it’s easy to take peace for granted. But for refugees who have arrived from far more tumultuous climes, the safety, stability and security of our country has value beyond measure. We should all be grateful for it. It’s democratic. We’re al-

lowed to publicly squabble, fret and disagree. We can be as partisan as we want. We can tweet our complaints to the editor and criticize our leaders and vote them out of office when they aren’t doing a good enough job. It’s a privilege we should never take for granted. There’s plenty more, of course. The beaver, the

moose, the marmot. Great writers, great musicians, great athletes. And, of course, hockey. And beer. Whatever your favourite thing about Canada, celebrate it. Wave the Maple Leaf on Saturday and sing O Canada at the top of your lungs. Happy Canada Day.

Senate might be author of its own destruction Hell hath no fury like Liberal senators scorned. When Justin Trudeau expelled Liberal senators from his caucus in 2013, some observers hailed his action as bold and brave, but opponents saw it as a way to distance his party from Liberal senators who might have cheated on their expenses. Regardless of the motivation, his decision while he sat as the Opposition leader was not well conceived and the consequences are now playing out in the upper house. Ironically, it’s not the new crop of senators who are revolting. It’s embittered Liberals who are transforming the Senate – and not necessarily in a good way. Some senators are taking a principled stand on omnibus bills (which, admittedly, are an abomination). The Liberals howled when the government of Conservative Stephen Harper used similar tactics. Now they’re emulating what they once denounced, to the consternation of the current prime minister and his government. Despite the merits of Senate opposition, blocking the will of the democratically elected lower house is a route senators have seldom taken. Lacking democratic legitimacy, they usually exercise selfrestraint. And the new appointment process, while superior to the previous one, still doesn’t confer

moral authority to thwart elected officials. What we’re dealing with now is a group emboldened to go where the upper house has never gone before, routinely challenging bills, especially the budget. As many have pointed out, the new relationship between the two houses is unprecedented and potentially problematic. But this is only the half of it. What’s mostly overlooked is the way that new relationships within the Senate will change it profoundly. Our institutional structure rests on norms and values that support collective action; for example, how cabinet and party caucuses work as teams.The system can’t cope with a covey of prima donnas. American institutions reflect individualism, which is a dominant value in American political culture. Hence, parties are looser entities that leave politicians free to pursue their own goals. In Congress, elected officials build a reputation as individuals, not as Republicans or Democrats. Personal ambition is the driving force for many in the American legislature. In contrast, the parliamentary system fosters collegiality and requires disciplined parties. Absent of discipline, the government would fall. Continued on page 7

In the short term, Conservatives in the House of Commons get a second bite at the apple as their counterparts in the Senate still toe the party line. Paradoxically, former Liberal senators have become their surrogates. In the longer term, dynamics in the upper house will evolve in a way that might mimic what happens in the U.S.Without the bonds that sustain caucus members with a common political purpose, the votes of independent senators will be grounded in personal convictions and advice from interested parties. Lobbyists and special-interest groups will court them. It would be much easier and more efficient to get a few senators on side to alter a bill than to approach members of Parliament, who are subject to party discipline. Senators will become political entrepreneurs, developing personal networks as they seek to enhance their reputations. Should we be concerned about the trajectory of the upper house? Yes, because it might have a destabilizing effect on Canadian democracy. The Senate is self-regulating and some

of its decisions, on ethics for example, are mystifying.The expenses scandal shone a light inside the upper house and it wasn’t pretty. And other questionable practices bear looking into – for example, senators can sit on corporate boards.With “independence,” there’s greater scope for conflicts of interest to arise. Unlike U.S. senators, who may sit on boards but not get paid for this work, Canadian senators can earn millions from moonlighting. Will the Senate be the author of its own destruction? Possibly. The prime minister was looking for independence in the Senate and he has it in spades – at the expense of his legislative agenda. Curtailing the chamber’s powers will require a constitutional amendment and opening up that Pandora’s box in the near future is unlikely. Until that happens, we’re stuck with a sleeping giant that has only just started to twitch. If that giant is fully awakened, the consequences might be disastrous. ‘True downtown’ Metrotown plan set for July

City started planning process in May 2016, but affordable housing activists want a ‘people’s’ vision for area By Tereza Verenca

The mayor of Burnaby is “hopeful” the much anticipated Metrotown development plan will come before council on July 10. Derek Corrigan made those comments at Monday night’s council meeting when asked for a timeline on the plan. He originally said it would be presented in June. The update to the community plan for Metrotown is meant to create “a true downtown” for Burnaby, one that enables the highest order of land use and development supported by social, recreation, entertainment and cultural amenities. City staff started gathering public feedback in May 2016 and wrapped up consultations this past February. Staff were then tasked with creating a final Metrotown downtown plan to present to council for adoption. But affordable housing activists have argued that replacing the neighbourhood’s low-rise rentals with highrise condo towers will evict up to 6,000 low-income people. At Monday’s meeting, Sara Sagaii with the Stop Demovictions Burnaby campaign presented an alternative – a people’s Metrotown plan.

Ideas from the 10-page document include development without displacement. The group wants the city to increase density by rezoning lots with extremely low density single-family homes. Those lots would be along major traffic corridors like Royal Oak Avenue,Victory Street and Rumble Street. The second phase of the plan would see residents living in Metrotown’s threestorey walk-ups be moved into those new, non-market townhouses. Stage 3 proposes individually rezoning, demolishing and redeveloping those Metrotown sites into new nonmarket housing. “This three-stage process for development without displacement will maximize density at a human scale, replace aging and insecure market rental apartments with better quality, more affordable, and more secure, non-market buildings,” reads the people’s plan. Corrigan told the NOW he plans to review the document before the community plan update comes before council and see if “we can add anything to it.” “I think we share many of the same goals.The methodology might differ, but I think we are all concerned about ensuring there is an orderly transition in Metrotown and that we’re providing alternatives for peo-

more opportunities. Our fingers are crossed,” he said. “We’ve offered up bonus density (money) in Metrotown for not-for-profit housing for some time with no takers. If the (provincial) government’s willing, we may be able to find takers for that.”

From O Canada to Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra will be offering up an evening of memorable classical favourites when it returns to Deer Lake Park in July. The VSO is coming back for its annual Symphony in the Park event, which always attracts thousands of

fans out to enjoy a picnic dinner and a concert under the summer skies. This year’s concert will be conducted by William Rowson, assistant conductor of the VSO, and will feature 18-year-old violin soloist Matthew Yep.Yep was the 2016 senior division winner of the VSO School of Music’s Future of Excellence Competition. He’ll be joining the orchestra for Saint-Saëns’ Havanaise. The rest of the program includes a variety of clas-

sical favourites – familiar music that includes Bernstein’s Overture to Candide, Smetana’s The Moldau,Williams’ Raiders of the Lost Ark: March and Star Wars theme, Dvorak’s Carnival Overture, Strauss’s Wiener Blut. As the South Burnaby Lawn Bowling Club celebrates its 100th anniversary this summer, the facility still remains one of the city’s hidden gems. “The times that I have talked to people, I’m just shocked.They’ve grown up here their whole life and have no idea that this club’s here,” says longtime member Freda Jenkins. “That is really interesting.” Located in Central Park in the 4000 block area of Kingsway, at Inman Avenue, the club boasts a manicured bowling green and a facility that’s used to host events, parties and tournaments. The objective of the sport, which is similar to bocce, is to roll weighted bowls closest to the “jack,” a small white ball.The game can be played in teams and can last up to two hours.

Like curling, there’s a skip at the other end indicating where the bowl needs to go. “It’s fun and you’re outside getting exercise,” says Jenkins. “The social aspect of this club is really big.You wouldn’t believe the number of people that say this is like their family now.”

Brian Ronaldson. Ronaldson notes that unlike hockey or lacrosse, lawn bowling is a non-contact sport that is inexpensive. The introductory membership fee is $95, and includes lessons, a locker and permission to use the club’s bowls free of charge for the first year. It costs $175 every year after that. “The only thing you need is a pair of shoes that have a flat sole,” he says. “That’s just so you don’t make a mess of the greens,” Jenkins chimes in. The lawn bowling club had its start in 1911 but formally organized in 1915 as the Jubilee Bowling Club, according to a newspaper article from 1919. A dinner program from the City of Burnaby Archives suggests the club was established in 1917. “On the 29th of November 1916, the members of the Central Park Club made a request verbally for the

Westminster Pier Park is about to become the hottest summer hangout spot around. The park will play host to Music by the River every Thursday night in July – with live musical performances, two DJ stages, buskers, artisan vendors, live painting and more. “The idea is to activate Pier Park for the month of July with lots of art,” explains Stephen O’Shea, executive director of the Arts Council of New Westminster. The arts council is partnering with Alex Jopson of City to Suburb Real Estate Group and the City of New Westminster to stage this summer’s concert series and arts festival. The fun will happen from 5 to 8 p.m. every Thursday starting July 6, and every night is an allages affair. It’s all in the vein of West Vancouver’s popular Harmony Arts Festival, though on a smaller scale – at least for now. “It’s a massive vision from the arts community,” O’Shea says. DJs from the New West Youth Centre will be spinning tunes, and the New West Craft market will have artisans on hand for shoppers.The Garden Gals – a New West art club that grew out of the New Westminster Horticultural So-

ciety – will have members on hand painting in the open air. Kids will be able to take in live musical performances, ribbon dancing and more artistic fun. As for mom and dad – well, how about the chance to purchase a Steel & Oak brew or a Pacific Breeze wine and stroll the park with it? O’Shea is excited that the city has partnered with them to license the site for the Music by the River events.The Eats at the Pier concession stand will have local beer and wine for sale, and the entire length of the park will be licenced so people can go anywhere they like with their drink. “I take my daughter down there all the time for ice cream,” O’Shea says. “When I’m there, I’ll be able to have a can of Steel & Oak or a glass of Pacific Breeze wine while my daughter has her ice cream.”

Neal and Melinda Michael, who run a series of PopLuck potluck dinner events, are also joining in the fun and offering community dinners in conjunction with the Music by the River nights. The month will include a couple of special nights. On July 13, the arts council will present a live performance by Vancouver electronic band I M U R (I am you are), a band getting a lot of buzz from its debut EP Slow Dive, which recently landed them in No. 5 on Spotify’s Global Viral Top 50 charts. And, on July 27, there will be a roundtable session in recognition of Canada’s 150th anniversary on the theme of River as Home – a partnership with the city, the New Westminster Museum and Archives, and the Fraser River Discovery Centre.
