Take a stroll through history in a 1920s reconstructed village, full of homes, businesses and shops constructed by Burnaby’s pioneers. Children can take a ride on the authentic 1912 C.W. Parker carousel and play old-time games. Costumed townsfolk provide fun entertainment and a history lesson. Did we mention gate admission is free?
Metropolis at Metrotown is British Columbia’s largest shopping centre. With nearly 400 stores, you’ll probably find what you’re looking for. Steps away from the SkyTrain, the mall has one of the biggest food fairs in the Lower Mainland. Heritage Village (now Burnaby Village Museum) broke ground on March 23, 1969 with the first building being completed by September the same year. Opening weekend was November 19-21, 1971.

Get lost in nature without leaving the city at one of Burnaby’s most beautiful parks. The Burnaby Lake Regional Nature Park features 19 kilometres of walking/hiking trails and six km of horse riding trails, picnic areas, and a rowing course for canoeing and kayaking. The lake was created by a glacier 12,000 years ago and today it is a wildlife sanctuary and birdwatchers’ delight. Climb up the viewing tower for a bird’s-eye view of the lake.

Burnaby’s favourite outdoor concert is returning for its 18th year at Deer Lake Park. Both headliners New Orleans’ Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue and Matt Andersen are sure to be crowd pleasers. The world-class lineup includes fresh-faces and fan favourites this year, including British Columbia natives Sue Foley, Leeroy Stagger, Jesse Roper, Murray Porter, Jesse Waldman and Kaya Kurz. Enjoy the outdoors without leaving the city at this 86-hectare urban park. Mostly covered by trees, the park is also known for its recreation facilities. In addition to tennis courts, outdoor swimming pool, horseshoe pitch, a pitch-and-putt golf course and Swangard Stadium, the City of Burnaby installed 12 fitness stations along the Trail of Hope, a 2.5-kilometer circuit around the park. The first phase of the Central Park Perimeter Trail is expected to be completed this summer, so look for the trail at the western edge of the park between East 48th Avenue and Imperial Street.

Grand Villa casino hotel and conference centre: Located directly off the Trans Canada Highway at 4331 Dominion St., near the Willingdon south exit, this is a great place to catch a show, have a drink and enjoy a night out. The Grand Villa features more than 45 gaming tables, a state-of-the-art poker room with eight tables, 1,100 slot machines and 100,000 square feet of gaming space spread over two levels, and with six restaurants to choose from, finding good quality food won’t be a problem. One of Burnaby’s best-kept secrets, Confederation Park has everything you could want in a recreation area: baseball diamonds, fields, tennis, off-leash trails, track and tennis courts to start. Visit the library, youth centre or seniors centre, or go for a picnic and take a ride on the model steam railway that runs every weekend during the summer. Cool off in the spray pool or go swimming at the Eileen Daily Leisure Pool on a sunny day.

Burnaby Mountain became a popular hiking area in the 1920s, and in 1957, the city dedicated the area for park and recreation. Simon Fraser University transferred 820 acres of its land to Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area in 1995.

BURNABY I SHOP THE HEIGHTS Get that small-town feel when you visit the Heights. The Heights is one of three hills facing the Burrard Inlet. Thousands of immigrants came to the area in 1902 with the opening of Hastings Street and the arrival of the streetcar in North Burnaby in 1908, closely followed by the first merchants. Many Italians called the Heights home, joining the English and Irish immigrants who came before. The Heights Merchants Association focuses on issues affecting the area and has been an official business improvement area since 1994. The association is involved in street beautification, cleaning, installing street banners, member advocacy, branding, decorative street signs, the annual Heights business directory and not to mention a variety of seasonal events. It’s a party on Hats Off Day in June starting with a parade down Hastings Street. Businesses “tip their hats” to customers with activities, food and entertainment throughout the day. Halloween and the Lunar New Year are some other festivities are celebrated by the community throughout the year. The area has old and new stores alike, the older owned by second and third generation merchants, and many new businesses and services from new immigrants from diverse cultures. The girl on the swing is a neon sign on Hastings Street that dates back to 1957 when it promoted Helen’s Childrens wear at 4142 East Hastings. Although Helen’s closed their doors in 2006, the sign has been refurbished and is now the sign for the Heights Merchants Association.

BURNABY I SHOP EDMONDS I HIGHGATE VILLAGE The roots of the Edmonds neighbourhood run deep. Burnaby’s first municipal hall was located at the corner of Kingsway and Edmonds 125 years ago. Much has changed since then, but Kingsway is still a major commuter route. With more residential and commercial buildings being built, Edmonds is one of the fastestgrowing regions in the city. Plans for the new Southgate City are in the works, with up to 20 towers and a new seniors centre planned for the next several years. The Edmonds Community Centre opened in 2013, and has been a centre for the community ever since. It was the first community centre to be built in the city in more than 20 years, and is double the size of the Bonsor Recreation Complex. It includes 90,000 square feet of space, a double gymnasium, a six-lane 25-metre lap pool, leisure pool, hot tub and sauna. The double gym provides space for badminton, basketball and floor hockey, and there is also a multipurpose area, a child care area, studio space, a youth centre, martial arts, and space for seniors. A fitness centre and 200 parking spaces are on site.
COMMUNITY CENTRE
Edmonds, like the other town centres, has seen a lot of development in the recent past. First, redevelopment of the old Middlegate mall into the state-of-the-art HighGate Village. Soon afterwards, the Tommy Douglas Library, which it is already being lauded as one of the best libraries in the Lower Mainland. Edmonds is also home to Nikkei Place, which includes the National Nikkei Heritage Centre and the Japanese Canadian National Museum.

Edmonds is known for its multicultural mix of residents, with many Eastern European and African immigrants happy to call Edmonds home. For foodies, Edmonds has one of the greatest variety of cuisines than anywhere in the Lower Mainland. Traditional Italian, Greek and Chinese restaurants are joined by Thai, Japanese, Vietnamese, Nigerian and Indian restaurants.

When complete, Altus, part of SOLO District, one of the developments coming soon to Brentwood Town Centre, will be the tallest building in Burnaby at over 550 feet. It will also be the tallest tower east of Burrard Street, only a few floors short of being as tall as Vancouver’s luxurious Shangri-La tower.
Lougheed Town Centre is a lively spot to live, shop, eat and play in the city, and it’s only getting bigger. The “City of Lougheed” is Canada’s largest new master plan, with Shape Properties Corp. investing $7 billion into the project over the next 30 years, with high-rise towers, and commercial spaces to join the existing mall in a network of pedestrian walkways and greenways. The popular shopping mall is home to the city’s only Wal-Mart Supercentre, which features a full grocery section complete with fresh produce and meat. Last year, the mall added a wireless lounge located on the upper level, furnished with comfortable chairs, HD TVs and wireless Internet that make any visit to Lougheed Town Centre a special one. Lougheed Town Centre is located at the corner of North Road and Austin Avenue and is easily accessible by SkyTrain, bus and car. With the new Evergreen SkyTrain extension, people from the neighbouring Tri-Cities are able to access the Burnaby mall with ease. BRENTWOOD TOWN CENTRE Already a site for luxury housing, community and shopping, big changes are in store for Brentwood Town Centre. “The Amazing Brentwood” is a $2.5 billion project that aims to be one of the largest urban centres in North America to live, shop and play. Cineplex will be opening a theatre and B.C.’s first Rec Room in 2019. For now, visit one of the many open shops already open with the family. Message from the Mayor As we celebrate Burnaby’s 125th Birthday and Canada’s 150th, on behalf of City Council, I’d like to welcome you to the wonderful recreational and cultural opportunities that Burnaby has to offer.
We are very proud of our parks, heritage sites and recreational facilities. More than 25 per cent of our city is dedicated to green space; dozens of cultural and heritage sites enliven our city; and we have western Canada’s second largest shopping mall. We’ve got it all.

SPORTS
Swangard Stadium is Burnaby’s showcase sports venue. The local sports centre is now home to the Vancouver Riptide, the newest team to join the American Ultimate Disc League, which plays from April to the middle of July. Last year, Burnaby hosted the 2016 World Junior Taekwondo championships at the Bill Copeland Sports Complex, which saw five days of competition with athletes from across the globe. Burnaby is also home to some of the world’s best box lacrosse players. The Burnaby Jr. Lakers play on Sunday evenings at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre and the Burnaby Lakers of the Western Lacrosse Association play their home games on Friday’s nights. The city is also home to 8Rinks, where recreational hockey players have a multitude of ice options.

History comes to life at the Burnaby Village Museum and Carousel at 6501 Deer Lake Ave., Take a walk through history down the street of a 1920s village at your own pace. One hidden gem of a fine dining restaurant with a view is Reflect Social Dining and Lounge at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown, which has a patio that offers great views of South Burnaby.
The three-acre estate on which Hart House stands was first purchased by New Westminster businessman Frederick Hart in 1906. Burnaby bought the property in 1979, and for eight years it was occasionally used as a film set. Eventually, the idea of opening a restaurant was proposed and in 1988, Hart House Restaurant opened its doors.

Deer Lake Avenue is the hub of Burnaby’s art community. The Shadbolt Centre for the Arts is an award-winning, multi-purpose community arts facility, which programs a year-round schedule of arts classes, performances, festivals, exhibitions and special events. The Shadbolt is dedicated to presenting the finest in local, regional and national performing arts. The facility seeks out young, exciting creators and encourages them to share their work with the community. For people who want to explore their creative side, talented instructors at the Shadbolt offer classes in dance, music, visual arts, ceramics, theatre, and literary arts for all skill levels. The Burnaby Art Gallery celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. The gallery stores its collection in an offsite climate-controlled environment in the old Ceperley Mansion built in 1910.
