In a record voter turnout (no, not the national political kind) readers of The Leader cast more than 10,000 ballots and more than 50,000 votes to select the best businesses in the area. As a result, this year’s Readers’ Choice awards are the most comprehensive ever compiled in this community. “I’m not sure what drove the voting this year, but the votes cast this year were double that of any other
year in the five years this contest has been conducted, said Jonathan McElvy, publisher of The Leader. The significance of both a high vote count and the awards, themselves, are important to this area of Houston. “For businesses, this is so valuable for both current and future customers, McElvy said. “But this is also beneficial for the public. Awards like this let our readers know some of the most trusted businesses in this market. You don’t win awards like this and not have a solid business.

To the Readers of
Phyllis A. Oeser Attorney At LAw
Your Neighborhood Attorney P hyllis Oeser practices general civil law and has been serving your neighborhood for 23 years providing legal services with an emphasis on Wills, Probate, Real Property, and laws affecting the Elderly. Her services cover everyone’s needs including those who do not realize the need to have or probate their Will. Phyllis is good at explaining the necessity of having a professionally drafted Will and necessity to probate one’s Will. With her thorough knowledge, experience and explanations she can win over those who incorrectly believe these services are unnecessary. She has been voted as the Readers’ Choice Best Attorney with The Leader.
Working as a legal assistant in her earlier years provided the experience and knowledge to allow her to open her own office. Early in her practice, she realized Wills, Probate, Estate Planning, and Real Estate are the areas of the law that allow greater interaction with clients, which is what she enjoys and what drives her. Her approach to being an attorney is to be a problem solver. Phyllis enjoys getting to know her clients as it helps her to better serve their needs so that they do not have to worry and are assured their matters are being taken care. Phyllis’ goal is to offer her clients personalized service at affordable rates. Her office is located at 4001 N. Shepherd, Suite 121, Houston, Texas, 77018. Greater Texas Credit Union Recognized for Supporting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
Thanks for your support.
For The Leader Greater Texas Credit Union’s two Houston locations were recognized for fundraising $1,566 by supporting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s Halloween pinup sales. Participating in the program since 2015, St. Jude’s has been a focus for the local Greater Texas locations because it’s a cause the staff are very passionate for. There’s even a little competitive spirit that comes out once the fundraising starts, to see who’s winning in “sales at the end of each week. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s mission is
to “advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Consistent with the vision of our founder Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family’s ability to pay. They offer many ways to get involved locally through fundraising and engagement: https://www.stjude.org/getinvolved.html Greater Texas Credit Union has 19 locations across Texas, is known as Aggieland Credit Union in the Brazos Valley, and has been serving Texans since 1952.

Friends for Life celebrates 16 years, still needs foster families By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com Friends For Life has spent nearly two decades rescuing, rehabilitating and finding homes for animals in the Heights and surrounding areas; and despite a few obstacles, the organization is pressing on as they find ways to adapt with changing times as they begin their 17th year. Starting out as a small shelter on 19th Street back in 2002, Friends For Life remains Houston’s only LEEDS-certified, no-kill shelter. About 75 percent of animals taken in by Friends For Life are considered “un-adoptableâ€? at other shelters – meaning they would be euthanized for age, health, and behavior issues. But through a few unique programs, the organization is discovering new ways to accomplish their goal of saving as many animals as possible. The more things change‌ As they enter their 17th year, Hopkins said the organization – which celebrated its 16th birthday on June 16 – continues to find their primary obstacle to be finding enough foster homes. “It’s a lot to ask of someone to take [any animal] into their home, because you don’t know how long or short the stay will be,â€? said Jennifer Hopkins with Friends For Life. However, even if someone may not be able to provide a permanent home through adoption, Hopkins said the task is vitally important to the organization’s continued efforts. “We are foster-based; and that’s the only way we can do all of this – If we can find enough fosters, we can pull more animals and save more lives,â€? she said. And the organization has recently explored unique avenues of acquainting animals to foster homes Over the last several weeks, FFL has begun a program with Autumn Grove Memory Care in the Heights, whose owner is a previous cat adopter from Friends For Life looking for a way to involve the organization. Hopkins said Stitch – a dog who has separation anxiety – has taken up residence at Autumn Grove. “He absolutely loves it there, and the residents love having

Roy’s got his best friend around all the time, Hopkins said. “Yes, it gives us a place for the [animals] to live and get adjusted to living in a home, but the residents at these centers love it so much too. It’s basically a foster home. “It gives them exposure to new and different people; it’s a unique program, she added. “Animals that have lived in homes are well-adjusted when they go to their forever home. They’re constantly getting behavior work in their foster homes; it’s not just a roof. Friends For Life has also recently acquired the property adjacent to the shelter off 22nd Street as a site for a future clinic to provide affordable full-service veterinary care, spay/neuter of free-roaming

From rescue and rehabilitation to necessary medical care, every animal matters is more than a slogan – it’s a way of life. The organization’s oneof-a-kind Thinking Outside the Shelter program also continues working to get resources to people to keep animals out of shelters. Friends For Life

distributed over 50 tons of animal food and 1,000 hours of behavior consults to Houstonians who needed help last year so they could hold on to their pets. Potential adopters fill out an application, and then meet for a brief interview about their living situation with FFL’s adoption counselors, who are trained to go through what will be a good fit for them. Adopters then have six months to figure which animal would be best for them. Following selection, adopters conduct a one-week “sleepover to determine how well the animal adjusts to their new environment. “If there’s ever an issue when the adopter has to let go of the animal, they can come right back into our program, Hopkins said. “We don’t want to just find “a home for these animals – we want to find the right one.

wners Jim and Kathy Stratton and Duane Myers purchased C&D Hardware in 1999 from Mrs. Alice Dailey. The store, located at 314 East 11th in the Heights, was once the site of record shop & jukebox business owned by Pappy Daily and his sons. With its smalltown appeal, C&D Hardware still prides itself on being a family-owned and operated business serving
the Heights since 1951. The store has grown through the years and is constantly adding products to keep up with customers’ needs and expectations. C & D Hardware carved out a niche for itself long ago and continues to strive to maintain outstanding customer service. Although C & D Hardware prides itself on being a fullline hardware store, the store also carries a large selection of home and garden decor. Looking for a gift?
